Hey Evan,

I'm really impressed with the production on this. You have always shown excellent skills in playing and composing but your really getting too good! Have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the acoustic intro. Awesome articulation there bro and and I dig the subtle delays that are timed just perfectly. I differ from sford because the piano accompanyment is in my opinion the icing on this cake. I had to re-play it 4 or 5 times before listening to the rest of the song. Sorry. Quite honestly it's fairly easy to work up a few riffs, throw some chords together, pipe it through some effects, drop in some bass and drums and viola. I'm always more impressed musically with lyrical composition than anything else. Lyrical in the sense of the artistically beautiful or expressive quality of a piece. Having said that I don't mean to understate the rest of this track. I really dig it as well. I think you and I both have similar interest in the more technical structures so I'm definitely grooving on your time signature and poly rhythmic stuff here. And yeah I'm still trying to decode the subliminal message contained in that outro! Very intellectual but also a lot of fun.

Greetings, Mr. Neo.

Glad you liked the acoustic intro. I don't memorize how to play my songs, but some guitar lines stay with you. I liked this one.

I like the piano lines I write, but not my piano sound, really. I'll be looking into EZKeys at some point.

Ah, yes. The track went to heavier stuff because I really like using contrast as a way to make up for having no vocals to listen to and follow.

Very kind and generous words from you, good sir. I thank you.

Take care.

Delayed regreetings, vag vacating visigoth.

Listened again I have. I didn't notice a whole lot of difference in the update. But:

1:45 bass fill now sits better.

1:46 I believe I can hear a tiny bit of vocal in there.

"You know I dig using my mouth for skat."

I do. I also know that you dig using your mouth (no spade necessary).

You get extremely high marks for "counting samples like sheep to the rhythm of his new drums." Surely your best ever sign off. Not sure how you worked that one out but it's entirely perfect. See - there's still more that can be done with MJK lines though I haven't even attempted one in quite a while.

You should write a song called Killing My Good Times. Because I'm so thoughtful, I came up with some intro lyrics for you that I feel somewhat reflect your current life situation:

Killing My Good Times

Too bad the wife lives here and has to kill my good times
Always pushing vegetables and supplements in my face
Wondering where my paycheck is
She should know it's in my wallet
That place where my dreams die every time I look inside

Add some more and send me a demo soon!

Greetings, sack suckling sycophant.

"vag vacating visigoth"

Hey, don't knock the pull-out. Better than having a lady on hormone pills. Not good for their bodies.

All I did to the track was remix the bass transition you mentioned, and turned up the two leads in the second half of the track. No vocals at 1:46. They come in at 3:12, and go till the end, getting a bit louder at the end when everything is peeled away.

I was very proud of the "Counting samples...." closing. I was just watching all the samples load in SD when switching through kits and messing with X-drums. I'm enjoying it quite a bit. Just the 10 or so snares I have to pick from is awesome. I've realized that EZX does not have all the mic bleeds and striker options, when SDX has everything. I REALLY wanted Progressive Foundry, but it's $150, compared to $40 for Progressive EZX. I'm really happy with what I got and have sat and fucked with just it for several hours.

I will not be writing the Killing My Good Times song. However, in my list of song names, "Piss On You- a love song) is among the options.

I've got a very happy, bouncy riff to start my next track. I want it to go from super happy to super pissed with several increasingly aggressive sections and transitions. Once I get sections written, I'd like to leave 2 leads open for additions. We'll discuss this further elsewhere.

Evan, who's got everything he needs, toontrack keys.

Hey Evan, you pulled out all the stops on this one man, I was kicking back digging the acoustic ambience and subliminally calculating how long it might have taken you to do all the drum programming (always the most time consuming part I find) when you high dived into some metallic crowd surfing extravaganza! whoa that was a slick change up and then it morphed slightly with some eastern resonances within those tight riffing grooves. That's a massive undertaking pulled off superbly, I have no doubt about the genre on display here and at some points the fusion verges on going nuclear...an excellent track that goes beyond the sum of it's influences and strikes new ground, definitely way cool. cheers Dave

Greetings, Dave.

It's always awesome, (and surprising) when you like a track of mine. I've never worked or jawed with other bass players, so it's nice when a bass purist gives a thumbs-up.

Not a lot of bass going on here. I've been putting it more in the background as I learn to work-in new elements. My track "Basso Continuo" is nothing but bass guitar. I'll unhide it incase you get a wild hair and give it a listen.

Programmed drums in this track till the heavy section. Those are loops from here. I'll have to do some digging and give credit. Learned a long time ago not to change the names on loops.

Thanks for stopping in, Dave, and I hope everything is going well for you on your side and hemisphere of our spinning, watery rock.

....and sorry for Trump. I voted the other way. I truly hope the shockwave of lunacy doesn't reach you. And if it doesn't, we may become neighbors. I'll buy myself a ticket quicker than it takes to grab a pu**y.

Damn, dude.

Is this the tricky track that you had to display your authority over? If so, you did well, my friend.

I'm amazed at how far you've come since we were new here. To be completely honest, I think you've far outgrown any suggestions I may have. So, I'll just sit back and listen to it again, and enjoy it for what it is. Amazing work, brother.

I dig the transition into the heavier section.

I think the only thing I hear that's not quite right, is the levels on the lead in the last section. But Static already touched on that, so there's no need for me to go into it further. Other than that, the mixing is spot on, and crystal clear. It is kind of interesting to listen to one of your tracks where the bass isn't up front and center in the mix. (so to speak). But, even so, it's presence is still known, and unapologetically so.

I told the ladies that I was in The Vulv. They just looked at me with a disgusted look on their face. Then I told them what it was. It changed nothing. They just asked about the other two guys. So, I went home and fed my dog, ate some frozen pizza and binge watched Brooklyn nine nine until I crashed out on the couch.

Alright, man. I have to agree with Steve. This is quite possibly your best work. At least of that which I've heard, anyhow.

Catch ya on the flip side.

Dig the title! Piano and acoustic guitar always works so I must say the intro really was a cool way to start the track. The song transitions nicely into the harder more loud part of the song. I do like the timing changes as the song progresses.

I read your response to Steve about the vocal/percussive part you did and it's pretty effective and interesting. Curious as to how you tune normally if not in standard tuning?

Wayne
Evisma
Evisma replied 6th Dec 2016 - 9 years ago
Greetings, Master Wayne.

I appreciate the kind words. As for tuning, I'm usually Drop C sharp. Everything down a half step, then my low E string down another whole step, so the E goes down 3 frets, everything else, 1. I have to use heavier Guage strings and aggressive truss bar adjustment.

Peas.

I really loved the intro to the track. The piano was well played however in my biased opinion it ruined the track. I hate piano in tracks unless it's edm.

Evisma replied 29th Nov 2016 - 9 years ago
I cannot fault your honesty, though the piano doesn't go past a minute and a half. Does the second half suck because the first half contained piano? Sounds like you heard the intro, then stopped when you heard piano. To each his own. I appreciate the feedback and the time you gave it.

Take care

Aye aye, Captain.

StatEyec Nomad here, running aground whilst listening to this.

As you know, I heard the first min of this a while ago but it sounds much better now. Good acoustic tone and then the drums sound great, sitting nicely in the background. The kind of drum sounds I should get into using. No complaints about the piano or bass g and this is all rather chilled and melodic but I know it has to get heavier.

1:38 riff has a nice rise to it. Bass g fill just before drums enter at 1:47 is good but I wonder if it interferes with guitar on top. Seems like a clash so things might work better without it.

And now we're rocking, with stuff being thumped in a pleasing manner. Meaty bass tone, of course.

2:37 cool cymbal fill. Would work fine without the reverse in there as well. And now some soloing though it's a bit low in the mix.

2:54 is that transition a bit too abrupt? What it goes into is cool and different for you. Very acoustic sounding and with a fun, bouncy groove. A bit like reggae before the nice 3:12 lead g comes in. And then you're getting more progressive and creative with the percussion. The kind of stuff I like to do. Another guit solo with a distorted tone and then 3:47 return of guitar is most welcome. Easily the nicest guitar sound in this. Very clean and pleasing to the ears.

Shit is fading away and then you're doing some percussive skat singing for an ending. Good stuff. I liked all of it but 2:54 to the end is the best section as it has a good sense of space and groove (and melody etc). Fix a couple of small problems and it will be a fully fledged nice track bro.

Delayed greetings, dong dominating dandy.

Glad you think the intro sounds better now. Did a lot of mixing and had a lot of issues I'm still not totally happy with, but I'm happy enough.

"...stuff being thumped in a pleasing manner..."

If you are to thump, let it be a pleasing thump. That heavy section's drum part is what I've been playing with in Superior. It's loops in the track and I've been building new stuff over it, just for practice.

I like the bass fill and the abrupt transition. After reading your comment, I went in and removed the bass fill, but missed it, and messed with the transition a bit but couldn't come up with a workable idea there. I'm sure there are better ways to transition, but I always like a big contrast to recapture the ears.

"3:47 return of guitar is most welcome. Easily the nicest guitar sound in this. Very clean and pleasing to the ears."

I have issues with guitar tones. I feel I'm pretty bad at making a really pleasing tone that is chunky or a little distorted. My clean stuff is fine, just a lot of tinny, throaty or plunky sounds. Drums will sound better, gotta remedy the guitar tone. Ax Effects next purchase?

You know I dig using my mouth for skat.

I hope all is well with you, and that you told many lovely ladies that you're literally in The Vulv. I know nothings official, but the name is great, and can be endlessly referenced. One of three guys in The Vulv, not just anyone can do that.

Evan, counting samples like sheep to the rhythm of his new drums.

I had to fave this before I even got to the end.
You've mixed all the acoustic phrases so wonderfully that the song feels like it's breathing. Then the piano glides in and adds an extra shimmer to the airiness of the intro.
For me, the first 2 minutes sound like a lost track from Metallica's Master of Puppets. The light and the heavy parts blend seamlessly, driving the song forward and allowing new motifs to unfold. Then the final part brings in that funky bass and the track becomes it's own sound as it struts into the outro. We are left in silence to wonder 'WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED!?". Then we hit 'play' again and all is good :)

(I think this means I liked it)

Greetings my blue friend.

lovely acoustic intro that builds with Piano. smart arranging and composing. Your bass is mixed perfectly in the rear of the mix. I know it´s there but it´s not overwhelming, nice work. Then we build nicely into the harder heavier section. Again all the elements are working here. I like the time sig changes as well. 2:56 caught my attention, nice reverse into that section. what sounds like claps are interesting. Also nice ending as well, de-constructed well. Evan this is your best work in my opinion. High marks for composition, mixing, arranging, instrument choices. just good all around. fav

Mr. Steve!

Gotta say, I spent so long getting this one done that your comment made my day. Yes, mixing the bass to the background is new for me, but I have to lay off all the bass layers. I can't listen to a lot of my older stuff. Mudville.

"book-a-tick-a, back-a-tick-a" is what you're hearing as claps. I have the mic at the ready all the time, but rarely use it.

Thanks again for the kind words.

Lovely dark intro. typical guitar mode from you. you need to explore some other modes (scales), but I am happy that you split them up with different instruments. It´s a better version sonic-like of what you have done in the past. but it sounds familiar. though much more sophisticated. if that makes sense to you!

Howdy Evisma. I appreciate the kind comments, I do try my best to be an alright fella though I fail sometimes :)

Most people that have complained about EZ and Superior that I've come across really don't know how to use it after they've created their grooves. For instance, my newest song, "One and Only" is using Superior Drummer 2.0, as well as my other song as "Angel in Disguise." With proper (and minimal) compression and stereo widening, the drum kits sound quite realistic and natural - to the point that a professional drummer and close family friend that has been playing drums for various large venues across the U.S. was having a very difficult time deciding whether they were actual drums or simple MIDI grooves (they were the latter, though I've managed to get him to play using Superior Drummer as the VST for his electronic kit on my next album that I just started working on).

I hate to sound like an ad but I haven't come across better drum sampling than these the Superior line, particularly for the price. You're getting recordings from multi-million dollar studios across the world and having them delivered to you in a sub 1000$ package - which is already a steal in my books. Keep in mind that you may want at least 8GB RAM (16GB recommended imo) to be able to run your DAW smoothly as it consumes quite a lot of resources, should you decide to get it.

TLDR - Superior Drummer 2.0 is amazing if you know how to treat it. It's worth the money, despite some of the negative reviews you may have seen. I have tested it thoroughly and was quite, quite happy with the results.

All the best,

Brado

Wow, was that the Paulstretch effect Nomadobro mentioned long ago? The intro was quite epic. The guitars are on point as usual with your stuff, as is the bass. Is that bass layered with anything? It sounds wide so I just thought I'd ask.

The only thing I'd say could use a bit more punch are the drums. Maybe you could add a compressor and give it a bit more bark. The varying patterns of the kit are cool though, and while busy do not draw away from the little riffs you're doing with your guitar.

Thumbs up from me,

Greetings, Mr. Sanz.

We don't talk much. You seem like an alright fella. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Needs to be said sometimes. Positive music, helpful with forum topics, and great taste in headphones. All good stuff.

"was that the Paulstretch effect Nomadobro mentioned long ago?"

Yes, slowed 8x. Good old Nomad. Pretty neat program. It's at the end of Choon Bi, as well. There are several ways it processes, and they seem to be heavily layered like several delays are being used. I'm guessing that is to disguise the degradation and algorithms.

"Is that bass layered with anything? It sounds wide so I just thought I'd ask."

I get two separate performances with the bass that are close to identical, and pan them. If timing is off or I get frettbuzz, I cant use it. It wont sound like the single, wide entity that I want it to be. They have to be really together to work, and I despise quantizing. Takes actual rehearsal once I write a riff to get it smooth. I try not to record anything unless I'm comfortable playing it already.

"The only thing I'd say could use a bit more punch are the drums."

Drums are typically my downfall. Reading reviews, so many people bitch about EZ and Superior Drummer that I'm leery to get it. Also, I need to update my studio PC, DAW, and desk, so the software will have to wait till I'm happy with the other upgrades. I will, however, go into the DAW and add some compression to the drums, see how it sounds.

I appreciate the feedback. Quite constructive.

Take care.

Consider yourself alliteratively regreeted.

"fairly far flung foreign fellow" is good and accurate.

I like your rant about the land of ill gotten gains. Depressing but not necessarily untrue.

"a 40 year old nerd playing Pokemon Go, walking while staring at a smartphone."

In the week since you wrote that, I've heard a lot more about this bullshit. I wasn't really sure what you were talking about before but I met a nice lady out the other night who was into it and she explained it a little to me. I've also seen lots of news reports on people having fights over this stuff and big crowds gathering "looking for a Pokemon", which is pretty damn weird.

Phone starers also annoy the hell out of me, for various reasons. One is just practical: as a cyclist they're always walking blindly across the road and into my path whilst busily tapping away or scrolling. To be fair, some people do the same without the excuse of phone distraction. I don't even have a smartphone.

"Programing is not enjoyable for me. I rush. Seems to be your strong suit"

Yes and no. I cheat a lot because I take great advantage of the many quality MIDI files that come with each Superior/EZ additional drum kit (played by real drummers). I never start off by programming up a pattern. I always audition a load of MIDI files in Superior in real time. It's great as you don't have to waste your time importing separate MIDI files to the timeline and then getting them to play. No, you have your chosen kit selected and then click on any MIDI file and it will play and you can control things in more detail from there (eg loop playback at double or half tempo). So, I like to audition drum parts that might not obviously work to see if things get more interesting. And they often do. After that, it's an ongoing process of layering those parts and sculpting all my fills and individual hits to make sure that the groove is almost always strong and nothing interferes with anything else. And that the drum fills aren't too repetitive.

Don't worry about my "decent yet unspectacular" conclusion. I'd say the same about quite a few of my tracks. It seems that some people here disagree with me so there you go. Maybe I know your stuff too well so am harder to impress. You do still need better drum samples.

I do the same thing. DAW's file browser has an audio player/looper right on the main screen, built-in.

I think it would be cool for you to record your cello doing a C note, plucked or bowed, mix that down, pull that sample into Kontakt and let it spread and transpose that note across the piano-roll keyboard. Then you could play your cello through your keyboard controller for a brief yet awesome moment in a track. I believe I will incorporate some bass in the new track like that.
