“Do they ever have Izzard with them?”

No. They’re just doing a load of shows only in London as their sort of farewell forever as Python. They’re all in their 70s (apart from Graham Chapman, who died in the 1980s) so this will definitely be it. No, no Izzard though Simon Pegg (good British comedy actor, also in some Hollywood films) did make a brief appearance.

“Too many drunk hillbilly idiots”

We don’t exactly have them in England but of course have their dickhead cousins, as does every country, I guess. They may all even somehow be genetically related. Since you mentioned that, I’ve been midly worrying about a boatload of dickheads coming over to my inflatable kayak and stabbing it a few times, and then sitting back and laughing as we sink. Would be very amusing from an aggressive dickhead’s perspective. Could happen but I guess/hope probably not.

I have an inflatable kayak as I don’t have a car (never learned to drive, don’t really want to) so can get this one around on my own (plus paddles, lifejackets, bags of extra food and clothing) on buses and trains using a porter’s trolley. It only cost around $550.

Yes, plinking notes sound a bit cheap and cheesy. Would sound better with a better synthstrument playing them.

Give the cymbal building a go. It could play some little fills at the end of a bar or you could have another, slightly different one fade gradually in, panned to the opposite side of your main cymbal (so, probably left). Try taking some of those MIDI files of fills (which are probably mostly on snare and tom) and moving them to the cymbal.

Doing so might make your track a bit nicer, bro.

P.S. I have just uploaded my first new track in about 6 weeks. Another mega epic, surprise surprise, with some heavy shit in it, especially in the full length version. I was considering calling it This Mean Motor Scooter, in your honour, but think I’ll save that title for another meaner, heavier track.

"worrying about a boatload of dickheads"

There is your next track title. It should have sweeping, moving parts that stir the spirit, but intermittently, also have the douchebagian yammer of four jocks at a bar in the background, along with some random sloshing sounds.

"I have an inflatable kayak as I don’t have a car (never learned to drive, don’t really want to) so can get this one around on my own (plus paddles, lifejackets, bags of extra food and clothing) on buses and trains using a porter’s trolley."

This baffles me. I can't imagine not being interested in driving. There is nothing like slamming an accelerator to the floor. However, we don't have rivers in town, so that makes a big difference. We have a bunch of lakes for drunk people to drown in.

This Mean Motor Scooter is a pretty heavy title. Needs something substantial to back it up. I wish you the best of luck.

Take care.

Another Studio One creation. I'm still working on this one so it is bound to be changing. Went to record last night and my Ibanez was dead. New battery and everything, so I'm kinda screwed till I get the cash to put it in the shop.

Evan is sad :(

Greetings. I am mostly well and went to see Monty Python live the other night then did a couple of days of kayaking on different rivers in London, one with just a hint of very mini rapids.

I listened to Divinations and it is good so will listen to the whole album again.

Don't forget that you could build your house in the woods with a penknife and then play with My Little Pony in housebuilding breaks. That's a Wilderness Construction Brony. There's also Ninja Brony, who likes to do a bit of plastic pony stroking after a hard day's ninjing.

Lots of different bronies out there. There's even Metal Brony, who plays face melting evil lead solos and sledgehammer riffs wearing a top hat with platic ponies dangling from it like corks dangling from an Australian tilly hat.

Anyway, back to your nice track, bro.

You've updated it quite a bit.

Shuffle ride intro works well (cymbal quality sounds great) but I think you could build that cymbal work a little more over 40 secs. Perhaps fade in a layered second cymbal.

Then we get your fave reverse cymbal and we're in to some rocking rather than clippity cloppity shuffling.

New beat makes it more uptempo (in case you hadn't noticed) but that's fine.

I think moving that previous 1:52 riff to the start was the right choice But I would say that as I suggested it. Basically, all my suggestions are brilliant and should always be implemented immediately.

1:12 high bell bass riff still sounds cool. It just has a different sort of tone so stands out.

1:44 not sure about plinky plonk main theme return there. It's you getting a bit glockenspiely. But where's the dubmetalstep? Note are fine, sound is a bit dodgy.

I guess you've faded out again as you work out your next move and will eventually get a better, more conclusive ending. Maybe you could end it like this:

Fuuuurrrrrrrrrrr

"went to see Monty Python live the other night then did a couple of days of kayaking on different rivers in London"

That sounds like a lot of fun! Do they ever have Izzard with them?

I haven't been on the river in several years. Too many drunk hillbilly idiots, flipping canoes and starting fights for the benefit of their girlfriends. Proved impossible to have a good time. Shame.

I'll take your advice tonight on the cymbal building.

Technically, Mr. DriVer suggested the second half being the intro before you. Not to be a thundertheif, but credit where it's due.

" Note(s) are fine, sound is a bit dodgy. "

Does this mean the plinking notes sound cheap or cheesy? I kinda like what it's doing, but I can change the instrument or add another doing the same line to beef it up.

Yes, the fade out is just a terminating of what I had so far. Not a fan of every track fading out, so I'll not do it with this one when it's finished.

I'm glad you were able to get out and have some fun. My wife and I are planning a Yellowstone trip within the next few years. Car just took a shit and bought a pick-up to replace it, so it's a bit tight right now. It will happen though. Debt is just a number that means nothing when you're dead,... so fuck it!

Relaxing tune you have here. Sounds perfect for the theme of a tour, your spot on with the title. Possibly Daft Punk inspired at the 1:20 mark? Grooving really nicely with all the guitars and the light drum mix. Great track Evisma, peace

Good luck with your small pointy cone seat though I still recommend the swinging harness. Could be good for swinging triumphantly through the jungle.
"found in the murky and uncharted realms that lay between 119 and 121 BPM"

Haha - your way of saying: "Yeah, guys, it's yet another track at 120BPM. No one works that tempo quite like me. My heart beats at 120 so it's my natural home".

Shuffle groove is different for you but could do with more fills and variety. Check my There Goes Gravity track to hear a 10 min shuffle workout.

Some of the first half sounds a bit mediaeval. It's the happy, jaunty twiddling, I think.

0:40 high bass slots in nicely.

0:56 Sounds like a jaunty Irish jig, with couples dancing merrily arm-in-arm.

1:26 not so much bass wah in jaunty Irish music.

1:36 high bell bass? Does sound bell-like there.

1:52 easily start of best section and I agree with The Valve that this should be start of track as it's got more balls and vibe than first half. First needs more attitude, more balls added. A good dose of hairy nutsack would help beef it up, even if that is somewhat mixing the metaphors.

Your track is nice, bro but could be nicer.

P.S. I now like another Mastodon album apart from Blood Mountain: the new one. First track has some cool vocal effects. Might go see them in concert in UK in December.

P.P.S. I'll try not to become a brony. But if I ever do, I'll also become extremely macho to compensate eg eating kilos of steak whilst pumping iron, farting loudly, crushing beer cans in one hand and bouncy a couple of bitches on one knee, even if that does require more than two hands.
Evisma
Evisma replied 20th Jul 2014 - 11 years ago
Greetings. I hope all is well with you.

"1:36 high bell bass?"

Not sure what you mean by that, I'm playing pretty high up on the fretboard. 17th to 24th fret area on the G.

"1:52 easily start of best section and I agree with The Valve that this should be start of track."

I have done just that. I removed 'A', and had 'C' start and go into 'B'. I plan to make it longer and add more elements.

"P.S. I now like another Mastodon album apart from Blood Mountain: the new one."

That's awesome, but I can't get past how you don't like Crack the Skye or The Hunter. Divinations, off of Crack the Skye, is what sealed the deal for me. Got their backlog and was less than impressed with the earlier stuff. Much noise, little music.

"become extremely macho to compensate eg eating kilos of steak whilst pumping iron, farting loudly, crushing beer cans in one hand and bouncy a couple of bitches on one knee"

This would make you a god among bronies.

My biggest problem is this. My grandfather, at 16, could walk into the woods with an ax and a pocket knife, and return three weeks later to invite everyone to the house he'd just built.

If we allow this to continue, what will happen to the concept of "Man". They don't make men like our grandfathers anymore. Can you imagine a world of brony men?

This is sounding pretty sweet. Nice blend of acoustic guitars, kind of reminds me a little of one of Moby's acoustic numbers in a way. But then it doesn't. Nice touch with the acid lick, i like that then there's the harmonising which is cool as well. You might have just inspired me here to try a rock track. This is some solid work and just what i needed to hear to kick back and chill before embarking on my next adventure.
A clever blend of guitars and synths.

Here's my take, for what it's worth.

1:52 to the end, needs to be cut. Then, take it and use it as an intro to a song that can be built entirely around it. That part is a nice, dark groove that could take on a slow building, epic life of it's own. Honestly, of everything I've heard come from you, that one minute is without a doubt my favorite. You could take that to some amazing places. I don't want to lessen the rest of this track by any means, though. There is serious potential here. I can see what you mean about it sounding "happier." I think mostly what it needs is some drum-love. I think you could get away with some fancy snare work on this one. (Think Brann Dailor).
I'm curious to see where you take this one. As it sits, there is, like I said, a lot of potential for this badboy!
Take care, man.

So, the end needs to "splinter cell" and become it's own thing, eh? I would hope to not abandon it, and be able to make it work here, but if it is better served in it's own environment then it must be done!

Evan. How are you?

The ending to this track was executed exactly the way I was trying to describe to you in "The Meandering Somnambulist."
With that being said, I'm not doing any more of a technical review on this one. I don't really need to.

It's clear that this track has purpose. At first I wasn't too sure about the synths, but after a second listen, and reading your description and your response to Crucethus, they made perfect sense, and absolutely worked. At least, in my own interpretation of the track, anyhow.

I like it, man. Good work.
Take care.

Greetings, O buttless one. Since you had the ischial removal operation, does it hurt when you try to sit down? Do you have to have some sort of special seat eg a hanging harness that you carry around for when you want to rest but not lie down? Maybe something like one of those sex swings.

This is something a little different for you and it's particularly 1:52 onwards that I like. First half is OK but needs more work. Jaunty horsey clip clop beat sounds less jaunty/silly in second half, something I'm trying to understand. More on that later.

More work needed and more elements to be added. Until next time, I'll just say 'buen canc herm', which I think could be the Spanish version of nice track bro.

Fuuurrrrr

P.S. Will you ban me from commenting if I become a brony?

"does it hurt when you try to sit down?"

I've had all my chairs redesigned to be just a small pointy cone at the tip of an upright pole, about navel high, with foot rests built in but just too low to reach while on the chair. Makes things easier.

"Jaunty horsey clip clop beat sounds less jaunty/silly in second half, something I'm trying to understand. More on that later."

I started off with wanting to do something like the soundtrack to an oblivious buffoon's public outing, but could only do about a minute before going from Major to Minor. Do you not understand why I made a change? Do they not go together? It's still in progress so I'll remedy the situation.

"Will you ban me from commenting if I become a brony"

No, but I will not respect you, or consider you a male. Sorry.

This is great man. It sounds to me like an RHCP type song that isn't finished yet. It really has that sound. You have the Flea part down, now it just needs some laid back Frusciante style guitar work, some Chad Smith drumming to fill in the gaps and of course Kiedis style vocals to wrap it all up. I really don't know how realistic that is or if you could even be bothered going that route with this track. But I immediately heard that kind of song in my head.

Sometimes people outside the box hear things you'd never think of when composing. Maybe this could help this track go in a direction even if you just use one of the ideas.

Just my 2 cents. I enjoyed the track for what it is so far. It has tons of potential if you choose to work on it. Good luck :]

Jason is not a prick, but I see how you'd get that.

Jason being allowed only two hits was self imposed for self preservation. Jason does not smoke hardly at all anymore. But when he does, there is a very curious reaction.

The blood typically residing in his skull makes a mad dash south.

Destination?

Therefor, the two hit allowance. It's part of being a responsible adult.

Word up/down/lying provocatively with its legs (the W) spread in the air.

You should get that old acoustic out more often as greater sonic variety has been something I have hoped you would slowly (or quickly) introduce to complement your fine guitbassery.

No, synths would not necessarily be tastier in my version of this. 303 sounds spot on.

“I always wonder if you will like it”

I get a bit like that sometimes, often as regards Crucethus as he reviews every track of mine. I review all of yours (usually more than once) so it’s unsurprising you wonder what I might say as you know I’m going to say something. And it’s generally a bit better than “not bad” or “ffffffffurrrrryyyyyy nutsack!”

We both work alone so probably don’t really have anyone else to consult for any sort of feedback at all, though I guess some random person off the street could do better than ffffffffurrrrr. I spent years making music alone with almost zero comment from anyone else or tips or advice or anything else. Bet I would have improved much faster with some external help. But maybe I developed my unusual style partly due to my isolation.

Yes, important not to have thin or weedy synths. Many ways of making the sound bigger, fatter, better eg delay, reverb, double tracking (eg with opposite panning), distortion and so on. Having good synth presets to start with helps a lot.

Congrats on moving too 100 BPM. I’d like to hear you go slower still eg 80, with an eventual target of knocking out some killer 2BPM doom funk metal. Sounds like it’s regular tempo if you’re on some serious amphetamines.

No, no Room Game reply. Shame I don’t have it all but what is there is still a tasty little selection. Yes, I am a hoarder of humo(u)r but only in my brain. I keep it all in a folder that’s next to my Music folder, which is also connected to my Awkward Things To Be Said Aloud In Public folder. So, if I do come out with some weird shit in conversation, hopefully the humour takes the edge off it and makes it more acceptable.

I’m strongly considering Steven Slate Drums Platinum 4.0 as it’s pretty cheap and I can’t really have too many good acoustic drum kits. Also looking at a plugin called Break Tweaker. Demo version works for 10 days and it looks amazing.

"Word up/down/lying provocatively with its legs (the W) spread in the air."

Is it wrong that I'm now attracted to 'W's?

"though I guess some random person off the street could do better than ffffffffurrrrr."

Come to Missouri, you'd be surprised. While working by a busy road about 3 years ago, I was cutting down some fountain grass when I heard what sounded like a human barking in the road.

It was.

A woman in her late forties was standing in the center turn lane, barking at the cars that were honking at her as she crossed to get there.

"Oh, what's this shit?" was my thought.

Then we made eye contact. FUCK!! Here she comes. B-lining for me. This is where things start to get strange.

Her make-up was very disturbing. Jagged eyebrow penciling, heavy blush on only one side, lipstick out of bounds. This bitch is crazy. Short cropped brown hair, and a very pleasant and colorful summer sun-dress.

She asked me for a cigarette, since one was obviously on display, dangling from my mouth. I gave her one, but left my lighter in the truck, so my co-worker, Brad, came over and tried to light it.

She started barking at his lighter when he flicked it several times with no success. She slides her arm courtingly through his, linking elbows, and starts squeezing his bicep.

Brad starts giggling like a little girl. He doesn't know what to do. The lady starts telling us that she was thrown out of the TV station across the road when she came in with a "Huge story that will bring this town down!" Something about someone who worked at the county clerks office.

I look across the road to where she came, and see a small group of people in front of the TV station, watching our interaction. This confirms her story.

Then the cops came.

In the end, it was a medication problem, or a complete refusal of her taking her meds, and she was one of the professors at the state university where my wife now works.

No idea what she did in the TV station, my end was weird enough.
----------------------------------------------------
"I’d like to hear you go slower still eg 80, with an eventual target of knocking out some killer 2BPM doom funk metal. Sounds like it’s regular tempo if you’re on some serious amphetamines."

This, too, cracked my shit up. (or "fissured my feces")

"humo(u)r"

I do not accept this.

I really am fond of how clean everything comes through in this one, you really must have thought this through.
There is not much of harsh critique to be given
but if I had something it would be turning the master slightly down, just see that by looking at the wave form. I don't hear distortion now or anything but normally it could result in slight distortion if you overload it.

Thanks for sharing this track with us and great job ;)

Hi MrEvisma,
This is a good song. Very good.
Your bass is more in the background this time, but the melodies you play on the acoustic guitar are working very well. At 1:08 we have some very "bassish" lines though ;-)
The section starting at 1:42 is my favorite moment: I like how it gets introduced and here everything is "perfect". A wonderful moment.
What I did not like is the synth sounds that follows (starts at 2:14) ... I think this melody is a bit too "simple", which wouldn't be a problem per se but doesn't work with the "fat dance lead" synth sound (IMVHO).
One suggestion: I like the ending piano, but it would be nice to repeat it a couple of times more, adding a delay (with fade in, not all at once).
Just an idea...
Again: thanks for sharing this track with us! Very good level as usual from you (actually no, it's even better than your usual stuff...)
Ciao, Domenico

Hey Evan.
It seems like your experimenting with some things here and I like. Very catchy and upbeat melodies. I really dig the first section with the acoustic and the bouncy synth. Was hoping to hear some heavier guitar there where it got a bit darker around 1:10.
Nice work on the mix down, lots of good separation and super clean. Dig it bro.

ffffffffurrrrryyyyyy nutsack!

I'm sure that's what mk320 meant to say. That would be really useful track feedback whereas ffffffffurrrrr is just rubbish.

Anyway, this is supposed to be the serious review. No humour, no confusion, right?

At the start, I thought: "Damn, how's that fucker getting his bass to sound like an acoustic guitar?"

Bass entry complements guitar really well with perfect tone. Playing some broken, legato chords?

0:38 bouncy creature synth meshes in well. Three cool elements and then you kick into your wicked 303 part on 0:57. Plus another choking, coughing creature underneath that's accurately on the beat.

Do you agree this sounds a little/lot like something I might do? It's funkier than usual and has a fine blend of acoustic and synth. And it's maybe a bit slower than usual. 110BPM? Have you worked out how to change your sequencer tempo off 120 yet?

1:36 return to main theme is just right. Classic, breezy, summery melody there and good theme music. This is pretty light, funky stuff.

2:14 ah you've exteneded it now and have gone into a dancier synth part that's quite unlike you. And fatter, midtempo beats.

Overall, the synth stuff is all a fine addition to your normal excellent bassery. Bass has actually taken a backseat role here. Y'know - a bit like how a bass guitar is allegedly supposed to be.

Only complaintis piano at the end. it;s Ok but maybe a bit of an afterthought though fade of music underneath is good and way better than most people's 'fade out everything' endings.

P.S. You've never replied to whether you got the emailed So Much Room Game compilation.

P.P.S. Please check out Steven Slate Drums. Top product is only $150 but has lots of kits. Might suit you nicely. I might get it too.

Furry nutsack indeed.

I've had an old acoustic Squier for years and the strings are AT LEAST 6 years old. It finally made an appearance.

"Do you agree this sounds a little/lot like something I might do?"

I do agree, but the synths would be of a much tastier brand. I'll admit, when I'm recording, and something exciting happens, I always wonder if you will like it. When doing synths, you used the words "thin and weak", or something to that effect, so it's always at the back of my mind to not let them sound thin and weedy.

"110BPM? Have you worked out how to change your sequencer tempo off 120 yet?"

100bpm. And yes, I've been trying to stay away from 120bpm. It's the default tempo so I wind up not changing it. Bad of me.

"Only complaintis piano at the end."

Agreed. I like it but it should not be alone like it is. Needs some heavily reverbed accordion. Yes.

"P.S. You've never replied to whether you got the emailed So Much Room Game compilation."

Damn! Sorry, I thought I did. Thought I replied with praise for one entry or another. Rather impressed that you had any of it. Are you a hoarder of humor? Good thing to hoard!

"P.P.S. Please check out Steven Slate Drums."

Will do. Thanks for the heads up,... and I'll work on the ending to this one. Thanks again!

What the hell does that mean?!

I was going to dismiss it since your from India, but you gave someone a "Nice track, bro", so what the fuck does "ffffffffurrrrr" mean? You're not an idiot, so why did you write that? Waste of both our time.

Hmmmmmmm
Whats not to like?
I really like the elements you've employed and musically its really strong.
I'm really feeling the absence of a pronounced kick.
I'm not sure if that's deliberate or not but some eq to bring it out could balance the sound spectrum a bit creating a bit of 'air' or "openess" in the mix.
Just my take on it sonically but I love the track.

Peace

Hey Evan, this is quality work man. I know it isn't finished yet, but it is one hell of a good start. Nice job at the 40 second mark with the addition of the synth, very cool. I also like the transition between 1:00 and 1:35. One thing you might consider is adding some strings in that 35 second span to give you a nice build to the change at 1:35. You might also consider adding strings all the way from 1:00 through the end (can you tell I love string sections, haha). Anyway, quality work and I really look forward to the finished product. I hope all is well.

Oh, the strings. Yes, I love them too. I played with it a bit and wound up adding an ending instead. Thanks for the listen!
