Excellent :D Do you find it easy to play guitar coming from the bass? I always find guitar easier after jamming on my bass haha such tiny strings! All is well here thanks :p Working on more metal tunes to get up seeing as Looperman is severely lacking metal!

Good to hear from you again!

"Do you find it easy to play guitar coming from the bass?"

Not at all. This is my first electric six-string so I'm learning things I never knew. I currently know three chords. I'm starting at nearly ground level.

With this one, I started with the guitar and got the intro before ever bringing the bass guitar in. I failed to mention to StaticNomad that there is no bass guitar till 0:18 when the bass comes in. The intro is four layers of guitar and the same Taiko loop that is later.

"Working on more metal tunes to get up seeing as Looperman is severely lacking metal!"

I agree! I don't think I could pull off real metal. My stuff may be heavy at times, but I can't call any of it metal. I'll leave that to the better metalheads, such as yourself!

Thanks for the listen and glad to know you are well.

Yo. SN to tha mothafuckin E.

The Guit-Fiddle Pluckmeister here, typing these words from the g-fiddle neck, with it hooked up to the QWERTY keyboard. I can pluck 100 words per minute, no mistakes. Thumb slaps for capital letters, palm muting for full stops and so on.

Is this song about celebrities (stars) who give fascist salutes? Here's one who has done just that.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/1506262/Im-a-fascist-not-a-racist-says-Paolo-di-Canio.html

I think the PRS might be your 'star' here, with all its twinkly lead work.

Busy, crashing drums to kick shit off. Until 0:18 it's twin bass-guit twiddling and then a proper bassline. It's good to lose it and crashing drums at 0:34 to give things more space and hear that taiko loop. A bit tribal there.

1:05 don't much like snare. Cymbals seem a bit thin. Drums need more low end in them, less high.

1:18-1:21 good high rise up the PRS neck. Frenetic stuff.

Why not make the intro before crashing drums come in a bit longer? The whole thing is a bit frenetic so more space, more chilling, would work as a good contrast. Try playing fewer notes in some sections. Will make the busy stuff cooler as a change.

0:57 a good little reverse bit there and a few other places (I think).

Overall: not as nice as some of your nicest tracks bro but still that essential thing musical bros all over the world strive for: a nice track bro.

"Is this song about celebrities (stars) who give fascist salutes? "

More along the lines of what the highest order of galactic badass would do while meandering through the cosmos. Just a daydream, that's all. I get a lot of those. Just a picture of something in my head and then I kinda put a scene to it.

Got an odd image in my head once of an ungodly huge horde of filthy people, barely lit by the weak sun, staring into the sun with great fear and strain. They're all telekinetics who are together holding back the sun's death. Thousands of telekinetics using their collective ability to contain a supernova. Neat image in my head,.... got nothing to do with it.

"The whole thing is a bit frenetic so more space, more chilling, would work as a good contrast"

It's hard for me to enjoy the drawn out parts and repetition. It works for your music because your stuff is more of a funky jam,(or several) that you put together and embellish upon. I don't know what mine is, but it seems more regimented and not nearly as "free". I understand what you're saying, but space and chilling isn't what I'm going for. I can see that it's too busy though, so some middle ground will be found.

"1:05 don't much like snare. Cymbals seem a bit thin. Drums need more low end in them, less high."

That drum kit was my major hang-up when it came to uploading this. I went through all my kits and never found one that seemed to fit. I also had to cut some lows because they were conflicting, so there are some mix issues that need to be addressed.

This one, really, is just a test or the PRS. There is way more guitar in here than I would like.

We'll talk again on this, I'm sure. Definitely not done.

I rather like this one for all the bass guitar working together. Still some stuff to do with it but I like it in it's present state as well.

hi again, I like the things you've added eventhough they are just a little bit affecting this composition 'in general' so to speak... Firstly I really like all new drum-sounds: the drum section seems to be more intense and 'present' now always helping to drive the composition - I can see it at 0:47 and from 2:19 mark which brings much more dynamic and interesting colour to the track! I really like the wah effects (2:41) but still the entire song feels a bit like a 'backing track'.
So nice and effective work with the 4/4 meter short motifs on the bass and other guitars(?) playing some patterns that can slightly brake this main groove... but still: maybe only it's because I just want you to have some kind of much longer asymetric melodic phrases breaking this again and again!
well done with all things you've already added to push it ahead and much better drum work supporting guitars. I am really enjoying the tone of the bass guitar in here - it's so nice and it provides much of interesting harmonic resonances!
Simply good vibes!

hope its useful. Greetings, Alex

I understand what you mean when you say "Backing Track", I'm sure vocals would completely fix that with all my tracks.

Your feedback truly is useful and helpful. It's the best part of this site. Getting to bounce ideas off of others. Thank you for your honesty, and detailed review. There is another Alex on this site who gives excellent reviews. What's that all about?

Anyway, I'm glad you like the track so far, but I'm not done with the ending yet so we'll see what happens.

As usual, I’m back for a bit more.

Yes, do try adding some acoustic g to this track. It could do with more sounds in it. As you seem to be good at remembering your bass parts and replaying them (your left-right double tracking thing) why not try (perhaps in general) doing the same with guitar parts?

Could use acoustic just in short bursts to emphasise some of the best little riffs and fills. Maybe you’ll record the whole phrase but then edit the parts so that the acoustic only appears at certain times. Could just be a volume fade up to make it appear in the track. And then down to leave us with your favourite lead instrument.

At some point, in some track, you should also do some acoustic g playing and then add plugin distortion in Studio One to get some good sort of acoustic rocking going. Or just use the Squier you don’t much like.

Just a few little ideas but I won’t charge you $85 for them. I’m reasonable so $40 will do.

“Reckful has a fitting name with your awesome and seemingly well planned "Drumatization".”

Yes, it’s a title I’ve had for quite a while. It means the opposite of reckless, which describes me as I’m quite cautious and also a massive procrastinator. Not impulsive or hot-headed at all. So, I guess that represents my care and attention to detail in pretty much all my tracks.

Yet, Reckful sounds like ‘wreck’, so smashing something up. There’s some pretty heavy, powerful stuff in the track that’s combined with lots of care and caution so Reckful it is.

I considered giving it the title of your fine This Mean Motor Scooter phrase but I thought it had too many chillout and beautiful, funky sections to suit that phrase. I guess I’m saving This Mean Motor Scooter for a really uptempo, chugging beast. The Bigger The Fatter The Better is just that but already has a superior title so need to change it.

Take care of thyself

"I’m quite cautious and also a massive procrastinator"

I would use this same line to describe myself.

However, I have a rather Vulcan approach to life in regards to logic. I do get upset when someone is being irrational or illogical. I don't have "card night" at my place anymore because a friend had an intoxicated meltdown at my house and got verbally hostile towards my wife. She mis-dealt a hand of Spades, and got "Get it fuckin right this time!" I don't like drunk people anyway. They promptly called a cab and have not been back in about four years.

" I’m reasonable so $40 will do."

Don't give it away for so cheap. Have some self respect.

hi,
I really like the concept behind the song: the continuing presence of some repeating bassline. It reminds me of some classical baroque period (or renaissance) pieces being variations and improvised elaborations on the 'basso ostinato' or 'ground basse'. What I like also in here is the tone of the bass guitar with a little of warm stereo delay effect. I think the drums you're using could be dryer and closer, especially the snare one. From 1:55 its not so easy to get the proper feeling of them when listening even though you somehow 'doubled the tempo'. But anyway they have a nice and gentle tone which I like... So I just thought that might turn your song into even much more 'acoustic' one and help the really good guitars in here. Nice work - I enjoyed it and am looking for more, Alex

Evisma replied 2nd Oct 2014 - 11 years ago
hi,
Glad you like the track. I'll be messing with the drums soon so I'll keep what you said in mind. I'm using a standard kit with reverb, and a hip-hop kit with delay at a lower volume.

"From 1:55 its not so easy to get the proper feeling of them when listening"

Not sure what you mean by that. Not loud enough? It's just an open and closed hi-hat. I'll look into the level.

Thanks for the listen and the feedback.

I like the guitar sounds, very clean put together with taste...

Sharp Mix... Lots of flavour here, the simplicity of the lines and
groove lets the MIND feely create it's own dynamics...

That is the beauty of it, No one will hear or feel this song in an

Howdy, partner.

This grew on me as I listened to it a few times. It started off as 'not bad' but is now held in higher esteem than that. I didn't love it as much as Pete did but that's the beauty (I guess) of differing opinions.

It's indeed more my sort of tempo, except for when I go double time crazy (hey, you could too - it's easy).

Lots of melody here from your layered bassos. Almost a bit of a hip hop/r'n'b type of groove. Decent reverb/delay on the snare.

0:47 decent change to ride.

0:58 make the drums do more to progress that section and build up to the drop back down to the verse.

2:20 ending is probably best bit. Bit dark and mysterious and a damn fine tone on that low whack. More of that please as it's getting more badass there. Quite possibly a new track instead.

"the end is not set in stone"

You need to get that done when this nice track is finished. I get all my finished ones set in huge granite slabs down the stonemasons' yard. They can actually carve all my sonic badasssery, including effects and banjfunk, in the stone though it does take a while. These sell for quite a bit in the art world and in the area around Stonehenge. You can even get an Audio Granite Slab player to listen back to these huge slabs of madness. I might even get my best tracks set in marble.

Take care.

P.S. Was thinking of you when doing my middle bass guitar section in this latest track that you may find mildly badass. Has some layered basses in that fast section (6:26) plus a little in the funkier regular tempo section after (7:07).

I really like this idea and will for sure employ it. Instantly made sense when you said it.

"More of that please as it's getting more badass there"

Got it. Been playing that part on loop to try to see what can go over it. I'll add some tonight maybe. Thought about acoustic, but I'll probably keep this one bass guitar.

Reckful has a fitting name with your awesome and seemingly well planned "Drumatization". Drums especially are awesome in that track, not to mention the bass.

Damn, I've commented so many times on this track (maybe a Looperman record?) but you keep giving me interesting replies and doing track updates so I'm compelled to say more. It's not even close to being one my favourites of yours.

Anyway, you're ride about too much riding though don't forget that some people like to be ridden whilst watching Easy Rider and listening to Riders On The Storm. I think it's rideiculous but each to their own.

Problem with you having overriden the riding is that the hat sounds a bit weak eg at 2:32. Maybe you could boost its volume in that section. Or double it with another. Also, you have too many of the same end-of-bar fills in the second half. Too predictable where they'll be and also too much repetition of the same/very similar fill.

I like the switch back to ride towards the end though the fade ending is a little bit of giving up, I feel.

You still need better drum software. I read about a guy in the US who sold a nut to medical science for about $20,000 so there's always that option (I'm assuming you've got two). One nut, killer drum software and some shiny new basses is better than two nuts, inferior drum software and no shiny new basses.

I liked your little Pony story. I though it was silly albeit well written* at first but then I thought it less silly when I got to the end and discovered the neat point of it all. With all the different vampire and zombie movies/TV shows these days, maybe your Pony Must Die one could be a cool take on that.

Not sure if he is the head brony, especially as I think he has nothing to do with My Little Pony these days. Still don't get all this brony bollocks but maybe the person to target is whoever brought My Little Pony back and started the brony thing. Must have been some clever marketing to get guys into such a thing. Weird.

*Maybe there's a literary equivalent of Looperman for poetry and short stories. Would be a shame if the standard review was "Nice words bro".

" Also, you have too many of the same end-of-bar fills in the second half. Too predictable where they'll be and also too much repetition of the same/very similar fill."

I've worked on this track eight or nine times since you mentioned this, and I STILL neglected to change that. There is also a missing crash in a few places in the second half.

I started working on another track and kinda shelved this one.

"Maybe there's a literary equivalent of Looperman for poetry and short stories. Would be a shame if the standard review was "Nice words bro"."

Probably be something like "I feel ya" or "Been there" or "Crazy story there, bro" or "Nice punctuation".

I like the work you did on the guitars here combining many guitar lines together in a very interesting and quite original way... really good guitar stuff you're playing over - I like that! I'm glad you liked this track.

As for inspiration, I get a new melody for something stuck in my head at work and I'll keep humming or whistling it to myself and when I get home, I hum it into an MP3 player I have with a voice recorder feature, just so I don't lose it. Later I'll come across that melody, pick it out on the bass guitar and fire up Studio One and record. I rarely have six-string guitar in my tracks. Almost always all bass guitar.

Yo. Word travelling in your general direction in an upward arc.

An update so I'll say a little about the second half. But first I must say this is a damn fine mix. Everything really very clear and fairly powerful.

One main problem with the second half is that you stay on the ride too much. Should switch back to hat to break the ride monotony. 2:32 is one obvious point. But it needs to change later as well. Maybe you could try finding a way to play that same groove on the toms. That would give some definite variety and leave more space.

Simple descending riff at 3:03 I like, especially the tone. Think they might be chords. Then played with a slightly different tone a bit later.

There's some good stuff in the second half, including the key change but I think more drum variation needs to happen, especially moving off that ride.

Overall, a decent update though nothing spectacular. Definitely not badass.

P.S. Regarding bronies, it turns out that people I know personally know the inventor/creator of My Little Pony. Everyone calls him Pony. But he puts on alternative sort of music festivals these days (think I may have been to one a few times). Wish I could tell you more but I didn't get much more info than that.
Evisma
Evisma replied 19th Sep 2014 - 11 years ago
I went in and changed the ride riding. Much too much riding on this track to override everything by riding on that ride.

"Overall, a decent update though nothing spectacular. Definitely not badass."

Agreed. I'm just happy to have my bass guitar back. The new second half was done roughly with the Epiphone and replaced when I got the Ibanez back. No Epiphone remaining in this track.

As for Mr. Pony, I must commend you, you are getting close. You must infiltrate his dungeness lair through the bathroom skylight, no fingerprints, and proceed down the hall, past the slip-n-slide, and into his sleeping chambers. Here, you will have to negotiate a series of laser matrices, pit-falls and an old, stooped man's "Questions, three.".

After that, you shall come upon "Pony". He will be puffing a cigar while lounging in a comfy, high backed recliner, wearing a smoking jacket, and nothing else.

Epic battle scene?

No.

You will unceremoniously pull out your pistol and shoot him in the balls.

Then, deciding to aim this time, you will shoot him in the shoulder.

Crouching down to really stabilize yourself and take this aiming thing seriously, you will actually hit his jugular and watch him bleed out painfully, unable to end his misery for a couple reasons.

One being that you can't hit shit.

And two, you only brought three bullets, thinking there was no way you would need more than one, while spending most of your preparation time researching skylights.

But, the deed will be done. Killing the Head Broney should have a Dracula effect and turn all the broneys around the world back to what they were before.

Wow, Peter Bardens did some Yes-esque stuff. I'll be listening to more soon.

Glad you liked the track. My bass died half way through and the track sat for a moth or more unfinished. I saved 200 bucks and went to the repair shop. Exposed wire touching a pot casing. One inch of electrical tape with a touch of super glue, and he didn't charge me. Said to bring in all my broken toys. Deal. The bass I recorded "The Enforcers" with has a tone knob that was set to mud, then broken off. It gets the next trip.

I've been working on mixing, so to hear you say it was good is very gratifying, and a surprise.

Take care.

Your Worrying About A Boatload Of Dickheads track idea makes sense. The main problem is that, unsurprisingly, I don’t like the sound of douchebagian yammer so wouldn’t want to have to listen to it more than once. So, it’s highly unlikely to appear in any of my tracks, which are all far out sonic escapes from everyone and everything, and certainly each and every dickhead.

They don’t deserve to appear in any of my compositions and it’s annoying every time I go out and come across such people.
“random sloshing sounds”

Yes but I can do better: use paddling sounds in place of a hat or cymbal. So, tightly sequenced watery grooves. Could sound fun. Would be weird if it was playing a reggae groove.

Water metal could also be pretty strange. Need some heavy, crashing waves for that. Of course! And maybe lightning in place of cymbals plus heavy rain. Nautical metal! There’s a genre I really must invent. Perhaps someone already has (maybe that group Ahab).

“I can't imagine not being interested in driving.”

Yes, you can. It’s not a great leap of imagination.

“There is nothing like slamming an accelerator to the floor.”

I know what you mean but some serious onstage riffage while slamming a volume pedal is similar though it doesn’t make you travel fast. Perhaps if you’re on the hoverboard (or just wire, a la Garth Brooks and others) and maybe the accelerator is connected to overdrive. So, as you slow down your movement, you lower the distortion.

“This Mean Motor Scooter is a pretty heavy title”

Damn right it is. I’ve been waiting for something to do it justice. The “wild onslaught” in the second half of my recent track Brain The Size Of A Planet very much qualifies but not really the track as a whole due to the chillout first couple of minutes. You used that phrase to describe my track The Bigger The Fatter The Better so I need to come up with something similarly badass and then This Mean Motor Scooter will be applied.

Till then, I’m keeping that title up my sleeve, so to speak.

In case I happen to come up with a series of interlocking riffs and riffs and beats that sound like a bunch of pricks chattering away, I promise to call it Douchebagian Yammer, in your honour. Actually quite a cool, weird title. Shame about the meaning...

P.S. I now have a bicycle trailer so can cycle about and pull the packed up boat behind. Can even fold up the trailer and then stick it in the boat (but not the bike).
