Very many thanks for your kind words. I sometimes think being economic with an opinion can sometimes convey in a powerful way one's true feelings! Wow works for me!!
Very Nice Track...Her Voice sits in it well, would've liked to hear
her do more of herself, then Bonnie...Guess that's what covers
are for most, just copies...
But I must say she did it well, the bed track is very cool to with
a solid Mix...
Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by, listen and post comments. Much appreciated. After reading them I couldn't help but go and listen to the Bonnie Rait version again and then play Lisa's interpretation. I have to say there's plenty of Lisa on the track particularly the long sutained notes and it's less bluesy too. Anyway it's our first track together so maybe as we progress a little more of herself will shine through.
Yes she did do well didn't she? I'm amazed at the talent and just so lucky to have someone like Lisa to work with. There is no substitute for a good voice (and she's a lovely person too!)
Love the comment "the bed track is very cool too with a solid mix". Very rewarding to hear so thanks for that.
It's so funny as I had the same thought when we began recording this track!! Oh yes make me love you please!! Anyway, back to your comments. Yes liquid gold is a good description and I couldn't agree more. Glad you liked the track and thank you so much for taking the time to listen and post a comment.
Perfect, simply perfect Richie. One of my all time favorite Bonnie Rait songs, and man you and Lisa did this more than a little bit of justice.
I am always so impressed with everything you do. You really are a true pro Richie, and an absolute joy to listen to. Please tell Lisa thanks for doing such a wonderful job on this as well. And thanks to you for posting this wonderful cover. I'm still smiling over that piano work :)
Sensational job by both of you. I hope all is well.
You are very kind and your comments so rewarding. Thank you. I'm very much aware of how much time and effort you spend putting together a track and producing good music so your views and opinions on mine are highly valued. Getting the absolute best from recording is a goal we both share I think. This particular track was long in the making and required patience and a very much "less is more" approach. So easy to spoil something by over playing or over producing.
I will pass on your kind words to Lisa - she will be very pleased. Thanks again and good to hear from you.
Hey Richie! Hope all is well. Sounds like you've been busy. This sounds great, nice singing by Lisa. There is an easy feeling to the mix, soft and gently. The piano stands out, very nice work.
Just listened to Spelljammer's version, two wonderful covers.
Very many thanks for stopping by and listening. Glad you enjoyed the track and your comments on the vocals will be passed on to Lisa (what a voice eh?). Nice to know it makes your favourite list.
It's often the way on Looperman that comments on tracks can be verbose and occassionally miss the point. In this case I'm just knocked out with the brevity and hope the WOW means WOW what a great track (I'm hoping it does). Many thanks for stopping by and listening.
I agree - I don't think there is much wrong with the drums either!! I just wanted to create a drum track with a little interest rather than sticking to a four in the bar hi hat. I don't think it interferes with the vocal at all.
Glad you liked the music and thanks for stopping by and listening. It's much appreciated.
You have indeed found a really big talent in Lisa Richie..really like the keys too (I think this may be the first track of yours I have listened to where the keys are the instrumental focus...man they sound good...warm & fat)..the quiet organ bit works better that a pad would have considering the rest of the arrangement..production is all pro...you and Lisa can take a well-deserved bow after this one...I`m clapping....Ed
Always good to hear from you. I hope everything goes well in your life.
Yes, Lisa is a real find and a very talented singer (actress and screen writer too). We have plans to start writing some original material in the very near future.
The keys are simply a patch from Logic X and you're dead right. It's not often I produce a track with no guitars on it. There are two pianos (the electric rhodes sounds plus the acoustic grand piano) plus the hammond style organ so not a great deal of room for much else. I decided to leave it as it was and let it "breathe" a bit.
I will pass your kind comments on to Lisa too. She will be really pleased. Thanks again.
Thank you so much for taking the time to stop by and listen. It's so rewarding to hear your comments and hear your thoughts on the production and sound. Very pleasing to here and the whole idea with the track was to make it as relaxed as possible and let the vocal shine. "Top notch" is praise indeed. Thank you very much.
Thank you for your comments. I will pass on your view of the vocal to Lisa - she will be very pleased. Thanks also for your comment on the production too. I always work on the "less is more" principle and keep it as simple as I can but sounding as good as I can make it. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks again - much appreciated.
Dang, some real words with some real power. Don't think I've heard the original, nice song here. Lisa voice has a nice feel with the instruments. Really enjoyed the keys here, like how it's played, smooth with it. That chill organ is very nice. Everything sounding clear in the mix, maybe the drums could be a lil louder is all. Lisa has a strong voice! Cool share thank Richie. Peace.
The original is worth listening to if only to compare Lisa's performance (I think it holds up to comparison very well indeed). Yes, I agree, it's a fantastic vocal performance with real passion and emotion. Your comments on the production are rewarding too and being a percussionist myself I can always accommodate louder drums!! In this case however I just wanted the vocal to shine and hope I've managed to achieve that.
Thank you for taking the time to stop by and listen. Comments are very welcome and a view regarding the production, playing, song construction and arrangement are always digested and kept for future reference. I think there are many things about the track that are good and I sincerely hope that whatever I've produced and posted on Looperman gives the community some pleasure and occasionally some incentive to produce and develop recording skills.
That said "some drums that flowing the voice a bit better" suggests a simpler drum part might have worked better. (I am guessing here of course as I don't fully understand your comment). If I have understood correctly then my thinking was this. I didn't want the backing to sound like a cabaret band so I elected to write a hi hat part that broke the rhythm up a little. I then played a bass part in which syncopated with the 2 and 4 in each bar in the hope it might create a little "movement" at the back of the track and create a more dynamic backing for the vocal. The bass drum part was edited after I had played the bass part in to be a more sympathetic to the overall track. Maybe it didn't work that well but I tried!!
Good luck with all your future efforts and thanks again for stopping by.
damn, this stuff is great! i'm not into this genre (also this is the first time in commenting on something) but this is a great piece of art. this should be everywhere!! spam this on radios or i don't know but SPAM THIS!! this HAVE TO be sended everywhere, this is so good!!!!!!!!!
How the hell did I miss this one? Senility is a wonderful thing when one finally figures out one is senile, haha.
Stellar work. But that doesn't surprise me as everything you do is top shelf work. I've got no suggestions for you, other than keep putting out your music. This is so damn good. Definitely a great way to start my day Richie. Thanks for always giving us such great songs to drool over. I hope all is well.
Richie, I always know when I hit play on any of your tracks, I am going to get an auditory treat, and a master's class on composition and production. This track continues to meet and exceed the high standards you have set for all of your music. I am constantly and continually awed by your musical prowess. This is beautiful work (it always helps to have such great vocals to work with).
Fabulous from the very first note. Really well done my friend. I hope all is well.
Good to hear from you and thank you very much for your comments. I always like reading your views on my productions. So rewarding to have one's work appreciated.
Well I think by now you know my game plan with all of this. Keep it simple and let the vocal shine. It's an ongoing challenge every time I put a track together and I always find it challenging to achieve that goal. In this particular case Farisha's vocal is amazing and requires a very sympathetic treatment. Glad you liked the end result.
All good with me. Chester getting colder but off the New Zealand and Australia next February for a couple months and enjoy some winter sunshine. What a life eh?
Thank you so much for stopping by and posting comments. I really appreciate it. Farisha is a real talent and I'm just so glad we all have access to such quality vocal acapellas. Glad you liked the treatment I gave it too. Thank you.
Wow, Richie...I really like this track and I think you did a great job, as did Farisha.
I don't know what the big deal is on using tools of the trade. We all do in one way or another. If you use VST instruments, that's a tool! I use an electronic drum kit because I don't want to mic all my drums and piss the neighbors off. I don't know that much about autotune, cause I'm not a singer, but if I was, I'd probably use it. Hell, I love tools and gadgets. I wish I would have had half this stuff when I was playing in bands. I'm going to use everything in my toolbox to make my tracks sound better, but I digress!
Did I say this was a great track! Well, it is...nuff said!
Many thanks for posting comments. It's always good to hear your view of my productions so thanks for that. I agree with you on all the fuss that's been made about using tools. I remember when I first started playing guitar there were no electronic tuners (1962!) but now I use one without thinking about it and wouldn't have it any other way.
Richie, this is truly a marvelous piece! It is radio-ready, and in my opinion, would be as good and certainly better than the stuff on the radio, today! The clarity of your mix is great and you accomplished your task of allowing Farisha's wonderful voice to shine through. All in all, a very professional piece.
Thank you so much for the kind words. Much appreciated so thanks for taking the time to listen and post. Yes wouldn't it be nice to hear your own stuff on the radio. How good would that be? Glad you have picked up on the clarity of the mix as I do try very hard to produce "clean" recordings that allow the listener to hear everything that is going on.
"A professional piece" is praise indeed. Thank you.
So, finally a bit more detail from me, as promised, as it's quite an interesting track.
When I said (in a rush) that the drums were a bit weak, I think I just meant that brush snare. You're right that the drums don't interfere with the vocal (which is kind of the main thing) and makes it quite a pop type of production. Like some modern r'n'b. It's the hats, the keyboards and vocals that stand out as the main elements in the track.
1:14-1:17 good drum fill.
1:31 guitar solo is a bit of a surprise. Fits just fine but that guitar sound isn't anywhere else in the track (I think) so it's a surprise but a good one.
Rimshot might work rather than that brush snare but I don't really have a huge problem with it so don't worry about it.
2:32 I noticed the funky bass and then read your track description describing it. It's still very much sitting behind the vocal so quite subtle.
You could give the track a big lift and different identity if you really brought that slap bass out and changed to a different, heavier drum kit. Could be a fun thing to do as a finale but not to worry if you don't. You don't really need it as her vocal does quite enough anyway.
Hope the additional thoughts help in some very minor way. Again, great work that justifies the considerable number of comments received.
Just love the way your very keen ear and eloquent writing makes a critical analysis of the track. Such a great read.
Firstly I'm glad you found the track interesting. That's good. I love putting drum fills in (it's my favourite instrument) so nice of you to pick up on that. Surprising solos is my trademark. The track needed some contrast and I tried all kind of things before settling on an acoustic guitar solo (albeit played on an electric). Pleased you don't have a problem with the rimshot instead of the brush hitting the snare. I guess if you had produced this song the outcome would have been quite different. As it is the aim was not to swamp the vocal or let anything get in it's way. I have actually mixed this without any percussion whatsoever. Sounds great!
My funky bass was a bit of a surprise to me if I'm honest. I only have one slap lick I can do on the bass and it seemed to fit nicely. Bonus! Yes you are absolutely correct I could have given the track a completely different identity with a funkier slap bass and heavier drums. The risk is destroying the integrity of the vocal and as I wasn't in a position to put Farisha back into the vocal booth and ask for a slightly more aggressive approach I had to work with what I had.
Always happy to hear thoughts and comments so thank you very much for taking the time to put together a detailed appraisal. Much appreciated.
I was clicking on a few random tracks and heard this song all of a sudden, and it totally grabbed my attention right away.
pruduction is amazing, the music is amazing and so are the vocals.
