Another great track Spivkurl! It's so unique but of course that's your style. Which I have always really enjoyed listening too. The 8 bit sounds take me back to my NES days. I love the fact that it's so gritty. This ones a Fav. Truly nice work.

Thank man! I appreciate the fact that you're open to a lot of different styles of music. Interesting you mention NES, eventually it will become apparent why. Thank you very much for the kind review!

Hey there, thank you for the kind comment! I don't really listen to this genre either I guess, as I've never heard a song that quite fit the aesthetics before. It seems to have had a polarizing effect on the listeners though, so I guess I succeeded in that respect. I really appreciate you stopping by to listen and leave your words!

Thank you Pete for another great comment! I've never had much luck with trying to sound like other artists, and it seems like other people have as much trouble making my sort of sounds, so I guess it works out. Makes me happy you found it joyful, as that's the effect it had on my while making it. Appreciate the positive vibrations!

Yup, definitely a spivkurl track after about 1 second haha. I like how all the sounds are made from one synth, helps to make it more cohesive. Nice and quirky track, I enjoyed listening once again! :)

Hey thanks friend! I'm happy that some people can get into this style of music. Thinking that people aren't used to interacting square waves in a very raw form, but it's definitely some of my favorite types of sounds. Good to hear from you!

This is such an interesting listen. I could envision this being played through the loudspeakers in a futuristic city. People stopping and listening to it.
It's really good. Love tracks with a spacey vibe. Well done! :)

Hey there, thank you for the kind comment on something which is going stale! You vision of this being played in a futuristic city really hit home, as around the time of writing this track I had been watching the film "REPO The Genetic Opera" A LOT... Many of the interludes in the movie are just like you describe. Makes me happy I could capture some of that feeling, even though it was unintentional. I always appreciate hearing from you, and I hope that you are well!

Thought i'd better jump on this since I started the loop challenge and never finished mine. This is sounding really cool, it's got a dubby kind of feel to it with lots of cool efx and inserts. The guitar sounds really good as does all the percussion and crazy noises. It doesn't sound like loops really either so congratulations on finishing and coming up with something good.

Hey friend, thank you for the response to this track! Makes me happy that you like what you hear! Once I get my parts from Thailand or wherever, I'll be going ahead on permanently affixing and tuning the pickups, as they are just temporary for now. Thinking I'll be able to get a cleaner more well defined sound that way. Glad that you like the sound so far though. Really there is only one loop other than the ones given to me by M8TN, but I agree that the loops were mangled enough to not sound like loops. Appreciate the feedback!

Such a cool weird tune . The guitar is ripped right out of the New Romantics Playbook (Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet). The Dub is eclectic and the beat is hypnotic.

I feel it needs some spoken word lyrics on this one, like describing an acid trip or a very weird day sort of like Robbie Roberston's "somewhere don the crazy river". I just had espresso so why creative thoughts are racing this Sunday. The synth work is very tasteful BTW, I wished it continued longer.

Hello fellow espresso bro! Thank you for the link to the DD track, as it was surprisingly one I had never heard, and it's good! (though they didn't do much that wasn't good) I've gotten out of the habit of listening to DD, as my wife pretty much hates them with a passion, heh. I actually couldn't name a Robbie Robertson song, though I have heard of him. I agree that some spoken word would be good, but I only finished the song because of the loop challenge I guess. Maybe I'll take it further, who knows? Thank you for the kind comment!

Regreetings. No problem with the Over And Over bassline. Still donโ€™t know what you think of that bassline/song. Would be interesting if you thought it was awful. My guess is youโ€™re just using a similar synth bass sound.

Great to hear youโ€™re so happy with your guitar. I have no ability for building stuff or knowledge of electronics so youโ€™re vastly superior in those areas. Would be fun to make my own guitar or bass. Or some sort of other strange hybrid. For instance, Iโ€™d really like a mohan veena, which is a cross between a guitar and sitar (with extra resonant strings) and all played with a bar, like a Weissenborn. Canโ€™t buy mohan veenas in UK and I wonโ€™t buy one (ie import it) without first playing it.

Iโ€™d also like a 2-string slide bass, as played by the legendary Mark Sandman from Morphine. If Iโ€™m very nice to you, could you make me one? Iโ€™ll pick it up the next time I visit the US.

Have a look on Youtube as people have made 2 string basses designed specifically to be played with slide (more than 2/3 strings and slide playing gets awkward).

โ€œmy biggest dub influences would be The Clash and early Bauhausโ€

No, theyโ€™re definitely not who I think of when I think of dub though I recognise some reggae/dub influence in some of The Clashโ€™s stuff.

Silly me for not getting the Parallel Killer joke. I did have a look at your guitar after writing my review so now understand the parallel reference. Yes, maybe there are serial killers who do a couple at a time. But the โ€˜serialโ€™ is a reference to doing it over and over and again, not how many are killed at a time. So, a series of killings could refer to any number of victims in each incident.

โ€œgroove loops, which contain more than one instrument class.โ€

Yes, I like to have everything separate for greater control. And so I donโ€™t feel like a slave to that configuration of sounds ie the original loop.

Again: nice track, bro.

Hello again! The mohan veenas that you speak of sounds quite interesting! I bet they sound cool. That guitar is definitely not my last acoustic electric instrument build, just not sure what's next. Been to into expanding my modular set up lately to think to deeply on the subject. I was actually thinking a two string sort of instrument would be fun to build. I think a two string would be far easier, as there would be quite a bit less tension on the neck and body as compared to four or six. If I feel it's a possibility I'll let you know.

Don't worry, it seems like very few people listen to Bauhaus any more, maybe slightly moreso the Clash.

I'm glad I helped clarify the Parallel Killer thing. It brings to mind some kind of creepy machine that thrusts a rack of blades into several restrained victims simultaneously with the turn of a crank or something. ooo scary.

It's fun to use loops in unconventional ways sometimes. I've been enjoying finding a loop that I like the rhythm or groove of, and using that to help create totally separate sequences then doing away with the original.

Thank you for the rereview!

That new guitar in places gave the song a bit of a western feel to the track. The rhythm you were playing also reminded me of a sound the Clash were using when they were in NYC exploring early hiphop and electronic music, just some bigger effects. You must be proud of your accomplishments!

Nice job with the loops!

Hey Wayne, great to hear from you on this track! Like I mentioned to StaticNomad, The Clash is definitely one of my biggest dub related influences, and I like what they did with other styles too. the album "Sandanista" especially. I'm really digging the new guitar, and it has encouraged me to play more, so that can't be bad... I even fixed the set up on my Jackson finally! Going to re work the pickups on the box guitar as soon as I get the parts from Thailand (been waiting for almost a month already!). They were only temporarily affixed for ease of adjustment. I suppose I'm starting to be proud, but mostly just thankful to have so many awesome instruments around the studio now. Also I am thankful for your listen and comment!

Hey man, good to hear from you! I'm happy that you enjoyed listening to this track. I would have to admit that there isn't much for loops besides the ones that were given to me in the challenge. I think they ended up fitting right in though. Groove loops are a tough thing, so they turned out pretty degraded. Thank you very much for the comment!

Word up, Spiv.

This might be my favourite track of yours. Yet again, you've got a bassline that reminds me of Hot Chip's one good song - Over And Over. I'm sure I've noticed that in at least 3 of your tracks. Just as well it's a fine bassline.

Damn cool stuff and I haven't yet bothered to check what the loops are.

Guitar starting at 0:06. Totally different to how I play. Has a cool, lo-fi, home-made (yes, I know it is) sort of delta bluesman quality to it and you're really grooving with it. But in a chilled funky groove track with quite a hip hop vibe so some interesting genre mergers.

3:25 do I hear a bit of slide on that guitar? You know I'm just a little into that...

I'm not really hearing the dub that other people are talking about. Maybe a bit from the bass.

1:07 weirdness of the sort I'd expect from you. Bit too discordant for me but kind of goes with the vibe.

WTF is a Parallel Killer Guitar ie why that name?

I'll be very (pleasantly) surprised if anyone else has managed to make as good a track using those loops.

Could have been longer though it's still a good length.

Might return for more detail but these are some of my initial thoughts.

Spivkurl replied 27th Dec 2014 - 10 years ago
Hey friend, thank you for listening! It's interesting that you hear a bass line similar to Hot Chip (which I remember you mentioned on another song), and also which you noticed in other tracks of mine. You can trust me when I say that this is not intentional at all, and it confuses and frustrates me a little. I obviously need to be a bit more creative. Makes me happy you enjoyed the guitar playing on this. I really was just trying to feel a groove and get accustomed to the new guitar, but I have to admit that since I finished that guitbox I can't pick it up without really feeling comfortable. Like I've never played a guitar that felt like mine before. I'm sure you understand. Yes, you definitely hear some slide work on this one. That was part of the intention with the setup on the guitar, to be like a hybrid between normal playing and lap slide work. The Manoloff nut really helps with this, as the action is just the right height for slide work, and also low enough to be minimal in detuning when fretted. Found my slide on the street somewhere many years ago. It's interesting that you don't hear dub in here, we must listen to different examples of dub. I guess my biggest dub influences would be The Clash and early Bauhaus, not traditional dub reggae. Between the skanky rhythm parts and the effects used it just suggested dub to me. The discord you speak of is basically because this song was started before the Loop Challenge, and I shaped the loops to fit my ideas. Not always easy. Regarding the Parallel Killer Guitar, I kind of thought of the name because of the passive electronic configuration, which is parallel as opposed to serial... then I thought about serial killers, then I thought that parallel killing would be much more effective... you know several people at once, as opposed to one after another. There it was, parallel killer. The loops were a challenge, as I wouldn't normally go for groove loops, which contain more than one instrument class. I tried to make them sound like I wanted, as opposed to how they were. "Could have been longer," it's what I would expect from you, so I won't worry about it. Thank you for leaving one of your classic comments, and for listening! Appreciated!

Thanks Joe for the nice comment! We're still considering a move to Germany at some point in time, as we just don't fit in around here any longer. Sounds like a fun club to be at, only I would have been ten years old! To be honest, the loops provided were added as an afterthough. I was going to make this song either way, but then the loop challenge showed up, and I merged the ideas. I appreciate your words!

very fine work - I really enjoyed this one. Probably this is close to what we could call 'minimal' music. At least at the very beginning of the track... I thought you might experiment with the delay effect on guitar even more to get the dub/reggae feel but instead there's a great amount of electronic glitchy sounds (I liked some toms as well) which is very nice also. I guess the 'dub' sound-image is only a result of mixing the tone of that guitar and the electronic sounding loops. I like that part from about 2:21 with some interesting bass filtering. At 3:15 it reminds kraftwerk for a while but with some bluesy, very eastern sounding guitar (at 3:26). Bassline sounds really good in here (as always). Very solid piece of music and really creative, detailed work on the track. Alex

Hello friend, I appreciate the feedback on this one! Interesting that you think of it as minimal, it seems we must have different interpretations of that word when it comes to music... maybe compared to other recent efforts I've done it is more minimal though. That's not a bad idea to experiment with the delay on the guitar more. I guess I was focusing on other sorts of automation with this one. I often steer away from to many changes in delay on a single channel, as it can really disrupt the timing of everything. More the delay was there on one of the guitar tracks to create an overall tone and stereo image when combined with the other. The main guitar parts (aside from the overdriven slide part) were recorded as two mono tracks, one through the direct box, and one on my old kustom 2x12. I think the effect on the direct recording helped with the overall tape recorded feel. To me, the "dub" of this song comes from the tempo, the lower bass line, and the specific effects used... plus a little bit of skank to the rhythm guitar parts. It's funny that I often hear people bringing up kraftwerk when hearing my stuff, as I have barely ever listened to their stuff... I take it as a compliment though all the same. Interesting as well that you found the guitar in the outro to be eastern sounding, I'm thinking it must be the slide playing. Thank you very much for all your supportive reviews!

Hey man, thank you for the comment! It's pretty much self built, if you consider repurposing and salvaging to create something new building.. I'm still wondering that myself. It's the guitar that's still pretty much at the top of the blog http://www.wearerecords.com/spivkurl.html .... That would be pretty weird to have my own genre on looperman. People always brought up SpivStep when I was doing dubstep, but that's not very all encompassing. Glad this flowed well to your ears! Interested to hear this blues track you speak of, I'll try to find it! If I get the time this morning I'll look for some loops too. Thanks again!

Impressive Spiv creation. Digital frankenstien aka Digi Dokta kind of scene. Used those loops better than I had thought. Nice intro to the PKG recordings log, adds a good element to the mix. A dub with a dub that glitches was an interestn listen Pat. Thanks for sharing. Illusive chemicals? Peace.

Hey friend, thank you for taking a listen to this one! Can't say I know of the Digi Dokta that you speak of, but maybe I should change that. Groove loops are not the normal thing I seek out, so it was a bit of a stretch, especially since I already had a song idea that I wanted to incorporate them into. Took me a night to figure out what you meant by PKG recordings log, but now I get it... heh. Had had a little vodka and bock by the time this comment came in. I enjoy combining dub and glitch, and I know it's not "traditional" dub (if there is such a thing)... but that was what the style suggested to me. Thank you again for your listen and support! Chemicals, yeah I suppose, but more along the organic lines... 2G/day or so of nugs, 4-8 shots of espresso, and a bit of vodka and malt beverages sprinkled throughout the week. Guessing that's what you meant. Take care!

I went to your site and saw the guitar build, pretty cool I would say. I particularly liked the grills on the sound holes.

"It's a bit pop to me..." I chuckled. I was listening and saying to myself, "damn, this guy is on a totally different musical plane as me....and what the heck is this?" lol.

I think it def has the Spivkurl sound with the cool sounding synths and all. But it was the vocals that really set this song apart from your other tracks. I liked the catch phrase "claws in me", has a very visual, physical and emotional connotation. Quite a few instruments used, gave this a couple listens to try to let it all soak in.

Oh, I knew exactly what happened when I read the reply on that other track. lol.

Hey Wayne, good to have your listen and feedback! Nice to hear that you liked looking at the guitar as well! I did a little fine tuning on the guitar this morning... some tightening and reorienting of the treble pickup mostly. So I guess what you're saying is that it not very pop? I don't think what I think of as pop is what others do, so it makes sense. The "claws in me" words kept going through my head lately, so just had to develop the idea. It felt appropriate for so many different circumstances. "I knew exactly what happened when I read the reply on that other track." - I guess I'm having trouble remembering what reply you speak of. Thank you very much for stopping by!
