Excellent sounds. Great songs. I would like to hear the vocals up a little more in the mix (I had difficulty understanding them). I think it is an excellent song.
Hey, thank you for the kind comment! It was good fun to help make this song what it is. I know what you mean about the vocals, but I guess I liked it this way where the vocals were more on level with other instruments... as that is what they are, an instrument. By this time I had already heard this song SO MANY times, that I may have hurried it slightly. Probably won't go back though, as everyone involved seems happy with the results. Thank you again!
Thank you kindly! I think Mark deserves most of the credit for the "blending" you speak of, as he used my earlier master when recording his parts... they were tailor made to sit comfortably in this setting. I really appreciate the supportive comment!
Very emotional passionate work here. love the story. definitely a fav. Thank you both for a wonderful collaboration. Simply the best here!!! -EazyBeatz- :)
Thank you EazyBeatz for the kind comment! I can't take much credit for this one, as Bear and Mark are the real artistic culprits involved. They were kind enough to let me post it to my pages though, and I thank them for that. Appreciate the support!
Hey M, great to see you here! Sorry about the late reply, but I've been deep into other projects lately. Makes me very happy you enjoyed the listening experience! Take care friend!
Pat, I knew Mark was on to something when I heard his rough sketch, but now hearing all of the additions, and then having them mixed and mastered by one of the best...well, it truly did turn out to be amazing song. Has a great Pink Floyd vibe to it with the addition of the vox and lead guitar. Your production skills are off the charts good. Thanks to both of you for putting in some extra effort on this one. It really is a special song now. Well done gents!!
Thank you so much for the supportive review! Of course you know that this song would be nothing without your amazing theme and composition. Really had fun and learned a lot working on this project, and it made me happy to get involved with you and Mark. Appreciate it friend!
Patrick,
Your mastering of this song shows why you won Bear's contest….superb!!! The pleasure was all mine in joining y'all on this gem.
The lyrics sort of just fell into place … I wanted the listener to think I was singing about a lost lover the first couple of verses and then the surprise hits.
Bear, well Bear is Bear and he never puts out crap…hats off.
Mark.
Hey man, sorry about taking a while to respond, been a crazy few weeks around here. I'm sure you understand. Listening to this again right now, and it really is a winner! You're really talented both in performing and recording... not to mention song writing! I respect the fact that you have your own style, and I think it is very complimentary to Bear's work. It was an enjoyable experience to be a part of this songs progression! Hope you have been well! I've got a project in the works that I think you'll like, it will be posted on the blog in the next week or so hopefully. Thanks for the kind comment!
Hey buddy! Thanks for stopping by to comment on this! It was a genuine pleasure to help melt these two talents into eachother! ShortBus did some great composition here as you already know, and Mark added some amazing performances! They are both guys that I feel a connection to for various reasons, so this makes me happy. They were even nice enough to let me post it on my page, though I had nothing to do with writing the song... heh. Thanks again!
thanks for your comprehensive reply. I am very impressed by the engineering work you did here and on the competition track.
I said this only because of the perspective of my personal temporary preferences regarding to music as a listener I have... thanks for explaining the details - it is much appreciated! Alex
I appreciate you getting back to me. I always try to keep in mind people's preferences when reading their comments, and I'm not usually offended by what people have to say... especially if I didn't compose the track. So, no worries. Between the first mix/master, and this new one to incorporate Mark's parts, a lot of hours went into this song on my end. Thanks for taking a listen!
interesting... but not really the way I like. Guitars and vocals really follow the overall feeling of this track which is a good thing... I enjoyed it!
I am not a fan of this song but from 3:15 it sounds very fine. I imagine myself jamming to this hahaha.
how about make it mono by the way? Or at least remove the reverbs?
very nice work,
Alex
Thank you for your comment! I see what you mean, but the vast majority of reverb and delay effects were present in the stems themselves, both from ShortBus and Mark. I used a subtle reverb in the master at 5% wet and about -13dB, which is actually less than usual for me since there was already a lot present in the wavs. I did tame the reverb in the main percussion/drum track with a gate, and that helped it pop more, but to go any farther than that would have ruined the whole feel of the percussion. I wanted Mark to be able to have control over the effect levels in his parts as well, so I just did my best with what he sent me. It definitely seems more pop than you would prefer, but that's just how it's supposed to be. Do you mean make the whole track mono? I prefer to make certain channels mono, and induce a wide stereo field. I always give a listen in mono before I decide that something like this is finished, and I found that it kept most of it's character, so that made me happy. I appreciate your feedback!
Thank you very much for your support! I'm happy that you enjoyed listening. The lead guitar is by MWRatridge, and there are two acoustic and three electric guitar tracks by ShortBus as well. Thanks again!
I would call this Aceed-Step. As it has elements of old school dub-step and even older school aceed (acid-house) with a sprinkling of Electro. Super Creative and spivtastic (A new word to secribe great electronic music)
Steve
Hey Steve, thank you very much for your comment on this track! I really can't claim to know much about old school dubstep, I just took a ride on the wave (2012-2013) for a little while and then nearly lost myself in the undertow. Acid though I've been enjoying for quite a long time. I like the acid from the early 90's and the early zero's especially, but I can't help but listen to new stuff when it comes up. Coming from someone who knows their classic electronic music well, your comment pleases me! Appreciate it!
Thank you very much RPS! I have to agree, it's some of my best instrumental work. I'm really happy with how the mix turned out on this one as well. Sounds so much better in wav quality on a decent stereo. Really appreciate you stopping by to listen my friend!
Sorry for the late comments Spiv but I do want to congratulate you on a stellar mix and a victory, you and Orlando deserved it! What can I say that hasn't already been said, it's excellent.
Hey friend, thank you!! I have been in the middle of some serious projects lately, so haven't been able to keep up with replies. I appreciate all the hard work you put into this competition! Have some new outlooks on composition after working with your excellent stems. Thank you again!
many thanks for your reply! Yes, of course it would be better to simply pick up guitar and correct that part. I am not too much into the autotuning and pitch correcting as well - it may ruin the natural sound and the 'original' message for the most part.
But overall it could be 'listenable' and even consonant in here without correcting notes - it's quite subiective from person to person. It blends in the huge reverb anyway so it is just a detail.
Thanks again for your thoughts - it's always appreciated!
Alex
Thanks for the reply again friend. Like I said, I completely ignored the chords of the guitar when working on this... I find it pretty natural for a musician (especially one as experienced as ShortBus) to play in a way that hints at or suggests a different key than that which is integral to the song. It is very common in many styles of music from classical and avant garde to blues and jazz. Your mention of the reverb is interesting to me, as aside from the percussion, I found the stems to be a bit on the dry side which is nice and helpful when mixing. Not saying that there wasn't any reverb on the guitars originally, but I almost got the impression that it was natural reverb captured in the recordings. It can be really tough to avoid that when recording an acoustic guitar. Thanks for the good discussion!
Pat - I am inspired by your work. Somebody mentioned "endless space in the sound field" that you are able to achieve. I have noticed this before - especially your control of the bass frequencies. This is for sure an area of mixing where the great stand out from the good. Congratulations on your recognition with this piece. Very much deserved. I look forward to working more with you. All the best. Dan
Your comment made me really happy! I have been working really hard lately to deepen my understanding of frequencies and their relation to human hearing, and I think low frequencies are really important in that reaction. You can feel them as well as hear them, even at low volumes. Your words are very complimentary, so I thank you!
Thank you very much! I can't take credit for the composition or anything, as that was all ShortBus. Has a lot of fun mixing and mastering this though, and I think it has changed the way I work now. I appreciate the feedback!
hi again.
I love this track.
Your entire album (containing also this song) was probably the one of the most inspiring things I came across when joining this site! Your approach is very uniqe and interesting when it comes to construct powerful basslines (0:49 and 2:48!).
There's some a little bit of instrumental improvisation at 1:18, 1:48 and from 2:03 - I like that! this piano melody you're playing from 1:18 sets this glitchy track more in the traditional tonalities. There's so much going on underneath all 'electronic weird sounds' - I mean the cheap lead and subtle piano lines! I can feel a connection with this work. I'd label it unique once again and very creative.
I love the 'reprise' part (when all the elements go crazy - 3:17) and very classic ending. Are you playing a classical piano music as well?
This is great because I am able to see things different now and more 'in details' than when I am just listening to the album.
Very nice work! Alex
Hey friend, thank you very much for the inspiring to read comment! I'm pretty happy with this work, and it's definitely one of the more creative tracks on this album. The piano parts are played my me and improvisational... I was finally able to get a piano earlier this year thanks to my wife, she works at a hotel and they got a new piano, so we just had to pay to transport it. These are the first recordings of it that I used in a song. It's before I started getting it tuned up and stuff, but I think it has a really nice character to the sound. Your compliments on my bass lines are nice to hear, as bass is one of my favorite things to design. I think on my good stereo that this is one of the best sounding tracks I've made, especially the stereo field, it just comes out at you like it's flowing from the speakers. It was all just a freeform composition which turned out nicely, so I'm happy that you feel a connection with it. I have rearranged my main studio room so that I can more easily incorporate live recordings, so hopefully I'll be putting out more things that are in your listening preferences. Thank you for the comment!
yeah! I mean the D major over a D minor from from 2:01. Can you see a difference?
Basically Im writing this only to bump up my track at the top of a list. Hope you dont mind. It's all about that! Alex
Hey, atleast you didn't just say "cool track" and leave it at that, so don't worry! As far as the key change goes, I completely ignored it when mixing and mastering this. I don't really feel like it is a mixing engineers place to question the composition of someone's song, more to focus on the strengths of each track and help them work together to form a polished piece. There's nothing wrong with a key change within a song any way. I think that this idea is what is missing from a lot of popular mixes these days, as evidenced by the overuse of pitch correction software. It takes much effort to use those when there is a key change, and most people don't even bother. They just put the track through a sieve which removes the captured moment of the recording and performance. I too have been guilty of this at times, but I'm training myself to accept my mistakes/intentions as well as those of others. If the composer or performer didn't like how a recording turned out, they should retake it. If it doesn't fit the key of the music, then it should be easy enough to transpose. Thank you for your comments!
Greetings yet again, Spiv. I guess I’m mostly back to offer congratulations on winning the competition. I have now seen you in your different T-shirts (that’s really what it’s all about, isn’t it?) on your blog, though I’d say you were a little more prominent in the shots than the T-shirts.
One thing I’ve been impressed with is how the good mixes really brought out how good a piece of music the original actually is, providing it’s mixed well. I didn’t really think much of the original, though I completely understand that was the point as the errors were intentionally left in. So, overall, quite a skilfully constructed piece and competition.
Seems to have really caught on, with so many people giving it a go. I really couldn’t be bothered to check any more out after about 7 or 8. They started to all sound way too similar.
I’m still mildly tempted to do a perversely different mix of this sometime and I must also do that with your Nitr8 classic (eg banj metal). But I’m always so busy knocking out my own little pop tunes. *
Anyway, congrats again and maybe the most impressive thing you’d done with this mix is get stuff to be so loud and powerful. Interesting as it’s basically an emotive chillout groove piece so not some piece of aggressive dubsteppery or grindcore or whatever.
Thanks for coming back with congratulations my friend! Yeah I just did some quick selfies (doncha just hate that word) in the shirts, wasn't really trying for a showcase of the shirts or anything. I appreciate that you say I made the tracks loud and powerful. I guess the key was in thinking ahead to the mastering stage while mixing, to avoid fader creep and stuff... you know thinking "it might sound a bit on the quiet side now, but once it's mastered it will be potent." I actually was pretty conservative when it came to increasing gain in this one, just because of the style of song it was. I really appreciate your communication here, so thank you! Will be by to check out that piece you mentioned in a moment.
hi, this song is probably the one of my favourites ever from the all what I've ever-heard when joining this site - I was listening to your entire album many times but this one is a great number! It reminds me of 'Can’t get you out of my head'. That's why I can feel some connection with this music!
It's a club smash-hit with a killer bass-line!
Hey friend! Thanks for another fine comment! It's interesting, I looked up that song you mentioned, and after hearing it I remember maybe hearing it once or twice a while back... but it wasn't memorable for me at all. I must agree that it has a similar style to the music though, so thank you for alerting me. Happy to hear that you enjoyed listening though.
You know the bass in a song is good when you can feel it, in addition to hearing it. I love the feeling when the vibrations in your body, haha. And by having the volume up when I hit play I was also able to remove some of the paint on the walls, haha.
Your music is always so innovative, but the secret to what you accomplish is your attention to detail. Once again, you display not only your musical abilities, but your tremendous skills as an audio engineer. Well done Pat. Really well done. I hope all is well.
Hey Bear, it makes me really happy that you enjoyed listening to this track! It's still really special to me, though it has a very different emotional effect on me than at first, which is okay... I too like to feel a bass, and in a song like this, it's so important for the neurological healing properties. Interesting that you mention details, as it still feels really simple. Thank you so much for all your support recently, and over the years!
I like this track. I love experimenting with your samples and have tried to use them in the past for some of my tracks, but they are not as good as what you are producing.
When will this particular track become available to download?
Hello, and thank you for your feedback. Honestly, I probably won't allow downloads on this one, as it's not my composition just a mix and master competition winner. Your comment about my loops answers itself though, loops are not as good as fully realized stems or channels or tracks or whatever. Loops are just ideas or tones to build off of. That's all I make them for... if I want to release full tracks for people to work with I do a remix thing or whatever. Thank you again for the feedback!
