Listen To 4-3 - The Last Thing On My Mind Jazz Song By BaoBou | Looperman

Description : I was working on another track that I couldn't get to work and after a couple hours I gave up disgusted and frustrated and just started playing keyboard a bit, for fun.

And then I wrote this.

Because sometimes that's how our creative brains work. Go figure.

A superb jazz track - look what came out of your frustration - I bet u were glad that you seg-wayed towards this, when you look back. Raw emotion comes through. In my mind, there is a single red rose on the piano as you play. Lovely. Kay0s

Haha I love the idea of the red rose, good call! Maybe a glass of wine too ;)

BaoBou! So this one has lovely and heart felt chord progressions. Also it’s easy to love the Tom groove. Guitar is spot on as always. Nice listen.

Are you playing all the instruments on here cuz if you are you're one talented man? Also I hear the '80s influence lol the guitar during break was great.
Your voice goes with this vibe but have to be honest your voice says has a specific vibe that it goes with though and me I think it's the '80s style but good work man

It's mostly mine, but recently I've been adding some samples. Generally whatever guitar/bass/keys/drums you hear are mine.

In this case I played the drums through my midi keyboard btw :D but generally I try to use my electronic drumset.

Funny description because I think most of us have gone through that where we working on a project that we get frustrated and move on to the next I actually just uploaded one that I just gave up on the mastering. Let's check this one out

Yeah we do right? And with our ADD/ADHD and procrastinating, working on a new track to postpone fixing old problems is sometimes just what we needed to create something good.

Btw here's the more polished version:

Hello BaoBou,
what a beautiful composition. I think it sounds particularly "lively", which is certainly due to your mix. If I may say so, your voice somehow reminds me of Edwyn Collins from Orange Juice (unfortunately long deceased). In general, everything fits together perfectly and overall it is a well-rounded work. I enjoyed it very much.

Cheers,
Micky

Thanks a lot Micky! I love Edwyn Collins... his "Never had a girl like you" is one of my all-time favourites!

Bao, you're doing great! But I will say one thing - More confidence! )It feels like you're a little shy of your singing... This is my personal opinion, I hear so.))
BaoBou
BaoBou replied 13th Nov 2023 - 2 years ago
Thanks Kaaman!
Yes, the singing was shy... I was recording it late at night and didn't want to wake everyone up. The original idea was to re-record the vocals, but in the end I liked most of them. You say shy, I say intimate ;)
Here's the final version:

Final for now anyway, if this makes it to the next album it'll get a complete do-over ;)

real smooth Bou, love the guitar opening, well written vocal and a nice delivery too. it sometimes just works like that mate, i use to plan things and get frustrated not getting the results, something then clicks and i go in another totally different dimension and get a surprising result.
now i just put some music anything really, open my daw blank and get creative from nothing. good job as always playing and singing

Thank you Paul!
I made the opposite journey from yours - I used to simply open a blank Ableton and grab a guitar, but more and more I try to create a structure, start with sort of a goal in mind. It doesn't always work but often I feel it helps to challenge me.
I guess it always helps to do the opposite of whatever you do naturally ;)
Thanks for listening and commenting Paul!

Excellent song writing, and musicianship too yes. Dreamy track, very well done and am enjoyable last listen before sleep!

Thank you my friend!
I also wrote it before I went to sleep and the vocals were recorded very low volume with loads of background noise because of this :)

I really like the lyrics, nice.

It's great we can use this technology to record our ideas, change them at a keystroke and capture our musical thoughts at any given moment. It's a great tool for the creative music maker.

As far as songwriting, I can come up with more than 10 song ideas in as many minutes with changes and lyrics. Im not bragging but literally, song ideas just pop up in my head once I put that guitar in my hands and I get to work. Freaky in a way but kinda cool how the creative part of the brain works.

Always a good listen!

Thank you so much Wayne!
Yes creativity is a weird thing. I'm not sure I can create 10 ideas in 10 min, but I've now found a reasonable flow that allows me to go a bit more in depth on tracks but doesn't block me trying to get it "perfect" (that's as good as I can make it, which is extremely far from perfection).

BTW the track that frustrated me last week is the track I uploaded today... so all's well that ends well ;)

love everything about this one. the structure is reminiscent of music I don't really hear getting made much anymore. however it feels so original. I'm also a sucker for the type of lyrics your singing, to me -its perfect poetry. great job.

Ahh the mysteries of creativity, I have learned a long time ago, that sometimes when it doesn't work, another approach with no criteria or design unlocks the creative mind. I always liked Brian Eno's Oblique strategies can also unglue a stuck muse. Cards that will say write a song with the color blue in mind, can really make you reach deep into your creative mind without added pressure of results. So nice tune my friend.
BaoBou
BaoBou replied 9th Oct 2023 - 2 years ago
Cool, I'd never heard of those but I'll look into it! I am a huge fan myself of John Cleese's book & video on creativity. Not there's a specific strategy I wouldn't do, but just to remind me that the frustration we feel is shared even by the greatest creative geniuses.

Thanks for listening and commenting my friend!

Description : "Oh no - not jazz metal! You're not supposed to mix those genres together." Yes, but someone's got to and the musical gods have chosen me for the difficult task. 9 mins of instrumental jazz metal - damn I sure know how to write a hit song - US No 1 here I come. Anyway - there's some dark, swinging groovy jazz, with Rhodes and guitar as the main instruments, for a few minutes and then some haunting, thumping evil breaks loose. Look out for the powerful synth horn sound. And then it just gets heavier and heavier before returning to some nice chillgroove funky mystery jazz. Instruments played and/or programmed: electric guitar, bass guitar, electric cello, multiple programmed acoustic drumkits, filtered strings, Rhodes, big synth bass, evil synth horn and a few other assorted synths. I assume this has too much jazz for metallers and too much metal for jazzers. So, only for weirdoes like me who enjoy both. This will surely be too odd for most people but I like to think it's pretty interesting and powerful. Let me know how its weirdness worked for you...
