Description : This is my new project, GLOBAL SKA NETWORK.
I wanted to go back to my early musical roots on this years RPM challenge. It was Ska and not jazz that go me inspired to be a musician. Ska bands like The Specials, Madness, The Beat, The Selector and Bad Manners all carried horns, the music was fun and live these bands were a great night out. After buying all the ska I could from these above bands I started looking back to the 60's ska bands Prince Buster, The Skatalites and Jimmy Cliff to name a few. So I felt why not try to capture that flavour and fun for all to enjoy.

If you have any constructive comments on any aspect of this song please feel free to express them.
I have decided from here on in I'm trying to reach perfection for each song/track.
I hope you enjoy the first of few ska songs I will be loading over the next week.
I thank you all in advance for taking the time to listen.
All instruments and vocals Slap J, drums and percussion Sonic foundry.

Cheers Slap...

Slap, it has truly been awhile my friend. Judging by when this track was posted, I guess you don't come on the site much anymore. As always, great track! I remember one of our conversations was about our love for Ska Bands. As a lad in high school I was influenced by so many musical styles, which
made me want to become a musician. But I'll always have a special place in my heart for Ska. Wow.. those were the days.

This does rock tho!! Definitely feels good. Probably the funnest most kick a$s vibe i've ever heard on the site!! The energy in this really comes across. Vry cool man.

    I want a skunk. Wait I already have one don't I?

what's a skunk? I might be making a fool of myself playing around with the word without knowing what it means. :)

It could mean so many things.

Oh jeez. It's not even skunk is it. It's skank.

:D Grrreat jam whatever it is. Cheers.

So just listened to it with my buddy and it is indeed skunk!! Cool.

Hi Califken, I'm glad you liked this track. I have to admit it's one of my fav's. A skank is a dance by the way. The lyric is everybody ska skank not ska skunk. I think that's quite a funny image though, a ska skunk...

Man, I gotta tell you... this new project is no less than kick@$$. It's cool that your roots are in ska, to me the best genres are fusion ones because I hate genres haha.

This was a really cool track, it had to be a lot of fun to put together, from those horns to the wicked vocal... and that funky bassline. Loved this! (if you couldn't tell :P)

I met Madness once when they were gigging in Wales. They were staying in the hotel where we were gigging. When they came back from their gig they stayed up and watched us playing. The guitarist was well impressed as i remember at the time.
I told them my kids were big fans so they said bring them over in the morning and they had pics autographs etc. they were real good guys.
This is a great tribute to those old ska sounds from way back.
Deffo Two Tone sounds makes me feel like rolling a fat one.....lol....
Sax sounds just right, lots of layers of vocals drums sound fine except the toms they sound a bit slack, if thats the right word.Thats my only and very minor criticism.
Otherwise a fine danceable track and very pro sounding, radio fodder if ever I heard it...................Dylan Thermos.

I's that the word skunk, as in ganja, if not oh well. Funny track had me laughing.... which in my book is a winner. I have the Specials on vinyl. What a word vinyl. SKA I got 2 know through the police, but some of the other bands you mentioned I have to check out.

great vocal accompaniement to this, a lot diffrent to almost anything iv'e heard before! the beat is really original, nice time signature, and a sweet horn line! really good track!

Hi lorin, thanks for the comment on the vocal (sometime the singing get's bypassed). The horns on these tracks are huge, Ive pulled everything out! 2 alto,2 tenor,1 baritone, 2 flute, 1 clarinet & 1 soprano. Time signature is 4/4, but it's a funk kit I've used and there's some great rhythm playing going down... Thanks for the kind words..

I devoured my way through Ska...as you rightly state it's a great night out when this style is played..always! (provided you kept out of the way of the local skin-heads..lol)....This is....Fantastic!..talk about capturing the pre Raphaelite area of ska...I'm waiting for Ian Dury to walk through the door and start clapping..man when you dig into the SlapJohnston bag of musical experiences ..you need a bloody long arm!...awesome work!(I don't like to use that word much..it's been applied in too many inappropriate situations...however this track..as you once said is the Dog's Bollocks!...cheers mate..Dave :)

Mon I mon InI know the horns too. I grew up playing alto and tenor sax. In HS learned the brass section from Tuba all the way down to french horn. When I discovered ska and reggae in college and saw bands like The Skatalites and Burning Spear with their unbelievable horn sections..... well I'm jahknow now. :)

Jahknow, that's a very Rasta kind of name, so I guess if you dig it, it's got that upbeat reggae feel kind of right. I used to be in a Ska band, and it was great fun. If I was to take this sound on the road I would need a nine piece horn section. Now that would be cool!
    Thank you for your time...

In the first few seconds, that drum intro is awesome. As per usual, the horns are fantastic, the vox that come in are great. This track has loads of energy and had me tapping my feet all the way through. No critisicm at all with this one, everything is perfect. Great wotk Slap, the king of cool.

Description : This is the final track from the first Global Ska Network album. I started this album in Feb thinking I could do all the tracks in time to finish the RPM challenge. I was wrong, but I didn't want to rush what I had started and compromise quality. This track is about the general can't be bothered culture we are facing. You know the kind of people I'm talking about! They want everything for nothing, and expect everything to be handed to them on a plate. They also would rather do dirty deeds to (lie, cheat ect) Than walk the right path.. Verse..How many more times, how many more lies spat at our faces.you wheel and deal, cheat and steal won't win the races.I turn my back, try to protect the love that's left, you want that too, the greed you show despises you.Chorus.You'll always learn the hard way, you have to have the last say, stop living day to day, the future's what you make it,get out there and take it.. 10 piece horn section, including a clarinet high up to add a sparkle. All instruments and vocals Slap, drums by Sonic foundry. Again I'm looking for constructive comments towards the arrangement and mix/production. This track has 24 tracks, so if you feel a tweak is needed please say. I thank you all in advance for taking the time to listen and review... Cheers Slap...
