Whenever I hit a creative wall, I go make something weird an unexpected with no intention or direction to the tune. And sometimes that's the best trigger for creativity. This is dark and powerful. I like this one. The synths with the vocoded sounds almost create a chant-like effect which is cool. Very good, Welcome back.
Steven
Thank you, Steven. This was exactly that. A creative trigger. Granted, I followed old Valvedriver formula, but, none the less, it got the ball rollin’.
I appreciate the compliment. Your opinion has always mattered a great deal to me.
This is really nice. I would love to hear the story behind the making of this. I love the percussion and how the pads build in an epic way. It feels like two different songs after we get the breakdown. My only suggestions are at 1;58 put some white noise rising into those synth stabs, and back down on the limiter compression in the section as it´s bricking a bit. I like how it melds back into the original theme. But from 2:06 it´s just a bit too compressed. I really like this one though. Musically itś really good.
Cru
Perfect. I just made a nice cup of Chai Tea, Sat back and hit play to hear what my friend Marco has done with this. Love the bass intro fading in from the ocean. Cool the bass and the analoge toms are forbidding, then the squelchy synths remind you of some sick demented sea creature rising up. then the sequenced arpeggio synths are the people running away from the sea monster. The detuned choral synths represent people yelling, and the xylophone-like synths celebrate confusion. 3:18 is a subtle bass making you feel that the Monster is upon them, and the wispy synths are people being struck by its tentacled appendages. The white noise is the hopelessness of the situation for all the carnage wrought. The scene is now desolate. Yeah, I think you nailed the meaning of Cthulhu, and how´s that for a description. It was a really good cup of tea, and a good listen.
Have a good night mate.
Steven
Hi Steven! Your descriptions are incredible, full of fantasy and fascinating images and they give me great satisfaction when I read them. I believe you have a natural predisposition to writing short stories or perhaps books, which you could develop very well. Thanks and greetings, see you soon Marco
Nice Intro. Really sweet peaceful tune. I found myself singing along with nonsense lyrics. 1:01 is awesome, I love breakdowns like this, and it´s genius. Fav´d Also the moving bassline is awesome. And the mix kicks ass. I really liked this one Mate.
Cru
I think this captures the ¨Lovecraftian¨ ethos quite well. nice work, great panning. Cool Synth Trills around 2:38. Overall you have such a grasp on this sound. Bravo
Steven
Nice Intro. Also a duet. Really well put together. Nice Mix. I like how the bass drives the chord progression really well creating minor 7ths and such. Really Good Job.
Cru
Thanks a lot :), I really appreciate it. I don't have a huge long term experience with making music and this is definitely one of the songs I tried super hard to make, I like ur music a lot too.
Interesting Break-beat Tune. I like the horns at the end. The instrument count is just fine. The Drums push the clip envelope a little bit as if u used a decimator on them. my only critique, but it´s good.
Cru
Cool reverse verb intro. Slick and R & B. and a nice bassline. Awesomely arranged. Vocoded ¨Talk To Me¨ is nicely placed. Seriously great tune. The effects were placed perfectly. Great Job.
Cru
i'm Going to BUY YOU A CAPS LOCK ELIMINATOR BUTTON. beyond that, this is a good arrangement musically. I want you to work on the mix. it needs some stereo separation and depth. I love the abrupt ending. Your Musical instincts are so spot on and the creative talent is there. I just think you need the goods (VST, s) to separate you from the pack.
Listening and Encouraging the talent you have.
Cru
Yeah I´m ok with the Key disparity as it does kind of flow in the Circle of 5ths Music Theory Wise. But it needs a bit more diversity in its instruments to make it more compelling as an overall composition. But I really like what I heard.
Cru
Cool, you made a completely upbeat version of this Pella. I had created a much darker version a few years ago, and is no longer available on this site, but this one is just full of joy. The opening drum salvo caught my ear as it reminded me ever so slightly of Armand van Helden's drum work on Sneaker Pimps ¨Spin Spin Sugar¨ Which to me is one of the all-time greatest garage minimalist mix ever produced. But you just injected this tune with some pleasant goodness which we all could use in these trying times. Nice work.
Cru - thank you so much for the review. I very much appreciate that. Just had a look at your fav album list - FOR YOUR PLEASURE is one of my alltime favs too (Bogus Man, my gosh).
Regards,
Michael
Great Intro. The distorted melody line is interesting. 1:44 it all comes together. Indeed nice bass work. 2:16 is a nice comedown. 2:45 reminds us why we are all here. Always changing and effervescent! Unexpected ending but it works with a cool verb. Nice work.
Cru
Ahh Yeah, Love that intro, and then the drop, brilliantly executed and arranged. And then the rebuild. And ...heyyy..ahh it´s just a sample, but really nice work.
Cru
Hey Mate, My apologies for being so Blunt. So Brick walling refers to the Waveform which literally looks like a brick. Reasons for this are usually using too much massive compressor/ limiter. There is nothing wrong with compression but you must lower the input to gain more dynamic sounds. When you brick-wall you sometimes lose the listener as it can become tiring to the ears to listen to. There are a few schools of thought on this sometimes called the ¨loudness wars¨. Believe me, a few years ago I was caught up in this as well. But I realized the comments people have With, my sounds now are more about how good the quality is and the stereo spatial separation as opposed to the slamming sounds. Less is better sometimes. You did back down a bit and it does have a better listenability. Virginia Slim is on the ball with his comments. presets are nice, but experiment with the tools by trying different settings. We all have the impulses to push the lever all the way up, but if you learn discretion and backing down on the Gain, you will see some amazing results. Trust me mate. I like what I hear, it just needs some fine-tuning, but you are9 on the right track.
Cru
Hey man, thank you so much for returning and for explaining things further, it is both helpful and appreciated! I feel like the brick problem is coming from the mastering part of the equation because the file I bounced out of Garageband isn't slammed, there is no visible clipping at all on the wav file. I have limited knowledge of mastering (obviously) so am using presets in T-Racks 5 which usually make things sound better overall but I need to learn how to go beyond the presets. I'm not there yet though. I did take one more stab at trying to lower the overall volume and "brick" problem and have uploaded another revision. Hopefully this one is even a little more "listenable". :) Anyway, I know I still have tons to learn which is both exciting and daunting at the same time. I really do appreciate your time and advise, so thank you!!!!
