This track made me smile all the way through. Again, vocals were excellent. You are able to compose in such a variety of styles, it is quite impressive. I did listen very intently to the coda and heard the interplay of the various instruments as you suggested. That's the proper way to compose I think. Each instrument has its own line. Together, they form harmonies and counter-melodies. This is very different from just playing a chord on the keyboard using a string ensemble patch. I've tried both methods and the results are strikingly different. Playing a chord doesn't sound realistic most times, but figuring out individual lines for each instrument is much more of a challenge, at least for me. I will listen to this track again to learn how to make my music better. Thank-you for posting it.
OK. I think this track might be my favourite one so far even though in some ways it is not as polished as some of the others. First, it reminds me of my times in Paris, wandering the streets at night, le Pont Neuf, the West Bank, les Tuileries, walking along the banks of the Seine. You have captured the ambience very well indeed. Second, I really liked your piano and accordion work. In some ways it reminded me of Gotan Project. I've tried to do accordion parts but they simply didn't come close to your work on this track. Third, I loved the vocal part, including the spoken word sections. Who did the vocals? French is a fantastically musical language and I've wanted to make similar tracks in the past, but couldn't find audio clips that worked. This track achieved what I wanted to to create. I loved it. I am downloading this one for my iPhone for sure! :) You must tell me who did the vocals! Was it you?
wow thanks again eric i did the vocals, and everything, if i'm a new here its because i thought and im make a good programation job, i know , so i thought than i can do everything alone in my cave , i'm wrong, we need to each others , i,m tired to be all a time in my cave, i learn by miself with some international musicals directors most of them are a real dictator, and if you dont want to go to the gaz room, you better to learn how to work and avoid any errors, its not permit when it cost 200$ hours and +, thanks to listen my work, and enjoid
This has a lot of potential, Jacques. I immediately started experimenting with melody lines, first in my head, and then humming out loud. You have an excellent ear for composing melodies I know, so you certainly don't need any input from me for this track. I wonder if Janis71 might be willing to collaborate with you on this one? She's got a very nice voice and has posted quite a bit of stuff on Looperman. Check out her acapellas.
oh oh eric if i,m there its to meet a guys like you, and i'm totally open to collaboration , thank you to give me names of singer , igonna go check her profile, yes the sond have a nice harminique stucture, and every time than i listen the melodies come naturely , and now i have a good idea of what its should be, and the jyrics take form what i want imagine, second degress like a painthing or a description of scenes of nature a field running like a wild horse throught the skyline , a magic place with a perspective , where i dont fell trapped , surround by walls all around love lift me above where i can see far away in your eyes the beauty of the world..... Ã perte de vue in your eyes i see, was from the biginning the key of this song, but i,m working 42 songs in the same times, for that one i want the best so i built a bank of words sentences ideas, and musical version and i,m arrived to macht every thing together, and find a women singer who gonna accept to bee paid and work on it to make agood interpretation, or if she have a better lyrics i can share the rights, but i wants first its to presents songs to majors or internationnal singers, EMI Canada director known me , once i sended 3 songs , he loock his office door tell every body to dont disturb him, no telephones, he listen my songs for all the day. this time i presented a singer the song was very good the problemes was the singer, not anought drive and a power, and concentration, when its fun yeah lets go but when its time to make an academic effort, you loss them. anyway i gonna see the profil and listen the singer than you talking to me, its important for to reply the messages than i received, because i learn in the the same time and make contacts its important for me.See you later, i gonna go to your profil today.
I, too, am impressed again, Jacques. You had some fine musicians working with you on this track! Very nice sax work. And, the groove was right on the money. Yes, Danke is right. Your tracks are very professional products. Something I can definitely get inspired by. It is such a rich sound. I must learn to make tracks that sound this good.
A really fine song, Jacques. I am so impressed with your work. And, very envious that you have such good singers to work with you. I hope you stay at Looperman because it is a real joy to hear such excellent tracks. In addition to the singers that Danke mentioned, you should check out Kela Nuvelle here on Looperman. She's got an EP out and has posted one of her compositions to this site. She's a very interesting singer/songwriter I think. Her style is a bit more urban than the two tracks of yours I've listened to so far, but I think she's got really good voice and delivery. She's trying to go pro.
Bonjour, Jacques! Hello from Ottawa. A really nice chill track. I really appreciated the interesting chord progressions. I see from your profile that you have worked on music for Cirque du Soleil. I can can hear the influences in this track I think. Ending was a bit abrupt. I get the impression that there's actually more to the track than you posted? Now I must listen to your other tracks! :)
Hey, George. Welcome to Looperman! This is a very listenable track. Hard to believe that it is your first effort at production. Way better than anything I produced when I started. I've also checked out your tracks on Soundcloud, although I rarely go there anymore because the community here at Looperman just provides much more helpful advice and feedback, not to mention acapellas and loops, remix possibilities, and colab opportunities. Anyway, I was impressed with what I heard and I think you should consider posting at least some of those tracks to looperman as well. You seem to have a nicely developing sense of melody, which is something I really value. On your chord progressions, you might try experimenting with using different inversions of the chords so the progression is a bit more seamless and you don't have to jump around on the keyboard as much. I thought that "Santo" might benefit from that technique, although it was a track that I liked at lot just as it was. Another thing, you have used some pretty extreme panning on some sounds. I have mixed feelings about that. I used to pan different instruments as much as 90 degrees left or right, but I got advice here that generally I should not go beyond about 30 or so. I think it depends on the effect you want to achieve, but I've followed the advice for the most part and I think the tracks do gel better that way. Anyway, keep posting your stuff. I look forward to hearing more of what you do.
Hey Eric,
Thank you so much for your feedback! As a new artist all this advice should really help me pin down my style and sort out my mixing skills!
The panning is a good point because it seems to make the song a little harder to listen to so i think ill be careful with that on the next track. I'm also going to write down some more chord progressions to keep the next track from sounding to repetitive but i'll also try to keep it from being to complex.
Once again thank you for your time, helping me with what to improve.
All the best,
George
OK. I think you and I have the same idea about what makes a really good track. I listened to this track and thought, "That sounds like what I might have done, including the use of a synth countermelody". I think you are better at it that I am, but I really enjoyed listening to it. This just sounds wonderful in my view. Great mix. Very tasteful. The instrumental backing complemented and did not compete with the vocals. Very nicely integrated throughout. I have only one quibble. I think the claps which are used on beat 2 of each measure periodically should be slightly lower in the mix and should have a longer reverb delay. Other than that, which is a very small issue, I loved this track.
thx for your comment... and you found the weak spot-i had my trouble with the claps...listened again and again- i wanted the claps present in the front dominant. too much reverb would push them too far away but they are indeed a bit too present they should be heard but not noticed. but i made myself a deadline you know yourself a track is never ready to be released. polish that this week when my new headphones arrive...
Joe, i really liked this track. Vocals were excellent! Just right for the feel of the track. it reminded me of Lou Reed a bit, probably because of the chord progression, but also because of the laid back feel to the vocals. This is one of the more interesting and engaging tracks I've heard on Looperman. Very nice work!
That a song from me would remind someone on Lou Reed - wow
Cool to hear that you like the vocals, cause deep inside i am just more a singer then a producer, so your words make me realy happy.
I missed this track when you first posted it back in December, benjizo. Just noticed that PaNaLoMbiaN had commented on it tonight and decided to check it out. To me this took me back to the R&B classics of the 60's! This could have been an Otis Redding backing track for sure! Great vibe. i can just hear his voice on top. I'm going to check out what others have done with it for a RAP track, but to me this is classic R&B and I loved. it.
Really nice mix, Jody. Very clean and everything has its own space in the spectrum. Your track has a great feel to it. Cheerful and positive. I agree with other comments about adding vocals to it somehow.
Thanks for the review....I tried looking for vocals here on looperman...didn't find anything that goes....maybe someday somebody will hop on this track...Thanks again Eric
Hey, terrance. Your response made me wonder if there was something special about how to mix and master hip hop tracks. I haven't really done a lot of research, but found the following blog post from a Mastering Studio in Toronto and the advice makes sense. Generally, he is talking about setting levels for different instruments in advance of mastering, but applying compression, perhaps some judicious EQing, and a limiter on the master output track will allow you to boost the final output level to a max of 0db which is fine for tracks to be uploaded to the web. Some day I'm going to try out one of these online mastering places to see if their finished product actually sounds better than what I can do.
Just when I mix i just feel like i should being doing more than I am and then i over think the process. But I will get better. I want to take online classes to help with the fear of mixing and mastering. So soon it will get better.
Well, you asked for comments in the forum so, here's my reaction to this track.
First, you should know that I've never really been into rap. Comes from a different world and I didn't "get" it. Wasn't sure it was really music, frankly. Also, many of the topics and language were just stuff I couldn't relate to. I know that Quincy Jones likes rap, so I figured there was something I just didn't understand, but never made the effort to explore it.
Then, for some reason, I got intrigued by JayZ and read his unauthorized biography ("Empire State of Mind"). I began to get an appreciation for what good rap was really about. So now I'm reading his book, "Decoded" and reading his lyrics and the background for his songs and now I think I'm beginning to get it. I could never make this kind of music, but I think I can appreciate where it comes from.
Your track makes an impact. The lyrics have impact. I'm still very uncomfortable with some of the language, but I have to admit it has power. And, it sounds real, not put-on like some other raps I've heard.
I liked the complexity from the variations in the rhythm of the rhyming. I wasn't crazy about the backing instrumental track. The contrast between the words and the relatively "sweet" sound of the instruments was interesting, but I think you need to find more unique sounds.
Mix was OK, but I'm thinking that using some compression during mastering would give it more punch.
So, I'm really glad you asked the question in the forums, because I probably wouldn't have listened to your track otherwise and I would have missed something really good and would have missed out on expanding my horizons. Next time I won't need to see a post in the forums to check out a new track from you. :)
Thanks I thought it sounded a bit bland. But the mix is simple just a compression on the master and equalization on a few tracks and distortion on few tracks but this is my first official mix so i am still practicing. So any help would be great. and i have not done any mastering. More because I am scared of it. Thanks again.
Definitely agree that this track needs vocals. Chord progression and funk guitar sound very reminiscent of Daft Punk Random Access Memories, but there are enough unique elements in the track to make it distinguishable with the right vocals. Hope you find a suitable vocalist. Could be a really interesting track and I would really like to hear the finished version.
Angel: This is my favourite track of your, for sure. First, I like the fact that you have lots of dynamic range in the track. Everything is not maxed out. Makes it much more interesting. Generally, I think you have really good beats for all your tracks and this one is especially good. I like the variation you used in the main melodic line in this track. Generally, if I had a comment on your tracks, it would be that your melodic lines tend to use repetitive eighth notes almost exclusively, so there isn't as much variation in the melody lines as there could be. You might be doing this on purpose, but unless you aiming for a true "trance" effect, I think it would be really interesting to hear you introduce more variation. Melodies, are basically just arpeggios, but with variations in the duration of the notes and the sequence. I can hear that you've got a good ear for a catchy melody/hook, so I'd encourage you to experiment with this aspect of your music. For this track, I'm definitely hearing a really smooth vocal line layered over top. If you'd allowed downloads I would have probably attempted a remix adding a vocal melody line using a synth patch. I can't sing, but I have fun sometimes adding melody lines to tracks that other Looperman members have uploaded. I don't get inspired to that with a whole of tracks, but this one definitely tweaked my interest. That means, as far as I am concerned, it has something that really connected with me. I liked it a lot.
Well it looks like I'm just following in Irini's footsteps discovering all your great tracks. Really nice bass line. Wasn't crazy about the claps, but the groove is just great on this track. I think it needs bridge and chorus sections, so if you ever revisit it, I'd look forward to hearing those. Another track that it crying out for a soulful lead vocal and some great backup singers. Can you just imagine what Lisa Fischer would do with this?
Just gotta say that I'm enjoying your tracks so much. I grew up on this kind of music and until tonight had no idea that somebody on Looperman had uploaded so much really good stuff in this genre. Maybe I don't know how to search the tracks properly, but I'm really having fun tonight. I realize these tracks were uploaded a while ago, but they are brand new to me. Looperman is such a great place. I appreciate it more and more every day.
Dreamy track. I downloaded it because I'd like to play with layering a melody line over it. I agree with Mykael that it has great lyric possibilities, but might also be great as a backing track for an instrumental lead. Maybe both? Why do I get the impression that you might be a pro?
Well, again I think this is classic R&B, not hip hop, but who cares? I is a great track and I enjoyed it from start to finish. But, I'd like to know why you pitch-shifted the vocals. That vocal sounded like it was entirely in tune and it would have been a totally killer track I think without the pitch shifted lead vocal. I'd love to hear it au natural. Where do you get these fantastic vocals? is it you? Need more details on how you do this. Please!
This was also a sample based song, so when I sped up the sample the vocals got sped up as well and make them go up in pitch. I find these vocals/samples just diggin around and finding out about all sorts of music, thanks for listening.
Really nice track! I've just discovered you due to Irini's use of a track you did back in 2011. You really know how to get a smooth R&B sound. i agree with "the youth", this doesn't seem like hiphop to me. It sounds like really good old school R&B, which I love and you nailed it. My only criticism is that I would really like it if you would provide some details on how you made your tracks, orchestration, how the vocals were done, etc. In asking for that, I'm being selfish because I want to learn how to make my tracks sounds as good as yours. How did you learn to make stuff sound like this?
This is a sample based song, I learned how to do this by putting in the time and learning how to use music software and what not. Thanks for listening.
Hey, Kela. I just found your site and the entire "natural born" EP. I've got to tell you that the track, "This Temple" is fantastic! You should put it up on iTunes for sure! The whole concept of an EP devoted to quite catchy songs about famous murders is, well, really strange. I like strange. :) And, I'm so impressed with your songs and singing. First, you stay on key and I really like the timbre of your voice. Second, you have interesting lyrics, Third, you don't scream, you have really good control over dynamics. Fourth, you really know how to use repetition effectively, not too much, and not too little. Taio Cruz has got the same "feel" for how to craft a good lyric and melody line I think. Fifth, you make funny videos. I'm hoping we'll see more of you on Looperman.
Really nice track, Kela. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. You have got a great voice and it worked perfectly on that track. Will definitely get it on iTunes. I've got a couple of tacks in development that might be of interest to you as a collab. Need vocals and perhaps some help with lyrics. I'll revisit them and then, if you are interested, will check in with you again to see if you are interested or have time to do something with them.
OK. I guess that trance is the genre I like best and I've tried many times to make a trance track that sounds good, but haven't succeeded yet. You obviously really know how to do it, Really enjoyed this track and will downloaded for my iPhone. It's relatively late at night here in Ottawa and I'm tired and semi-zoned out, and this track just "hit the spot" for me. Great job!
Very moving and, yes, a mix of emotions and feelings are conveyed in this track. Someplace, can't remember where, I read that music is the one artistic medium where you can directly experience the emotional state of mind that the creator had at the time when the composition was made. I'm not sure if that is something exclusive to music, but I think this track is a really good example of how true that is. I enjoyed it very much and related to it.
Hi Eric. I think music is a universal language when it comes to moments in life, happy and sad and yes, very connective between the composer and listener.
Thanks for your kind comments.
Steve
Well, I actually like commercial stuff, at least some of it anyway. And I definitely liked this one. You really know how to make this kind of track sound right. And, the production sounds so good. I'd love to be able to make a track like this one.
