This is ridiculously good! You owe me a new keyboard by the way which I've shattered falling off my chair! Did you record the backing track as well (the guitar and strings)?

There are a couple of technical issues that jump out(but hey I'm paid to find defects in recordings and fix them) like the distortion that comes in when you get to the full instrumentation. Also some width would be good for the chorus to really make it stand out but I'm being picky! Lol!

If you are looking to make a new mix to this song and have access to the multitracks feel free to contact me as it's totally up my alley!

You can find links to a soundcloud profile on my page where I have some mixes showcased, on request I can provide additional info as well.

And shame on you for not pointing out this track earlier!

haha thank you Malu! I posted it just for you to show my versitility :P The guitar is my friend, the strings are midi added and I also back up my own harms. The guitarist has the multitracks but I'll see if I can get my hands on them. I would love to hear this track refreshed!

I like the vibe of the song. It kinda takes my mind back to the early days of rock and the greats that made rock legendary. Very very catchy guitar rhythm and the chords choice is fantastic.

I agree with Glocke on the vocals being a bit to filtered and sounding small but this is definitely a track with a lot of potential. You could easily turn this into a power metal type of song by adding some drums and heavy guitars on top of this arrangement. Definitely lots of options in there.

Thanks for sharing!

You've got a great vocal tone, soulful and warm. From what I hear your voice would work great on some soul music and why not some pop rock/soft rock/acoustic type of tracks. Interesting actually how that nasal quality makes your voice recognisable. Definitely don't limit yourself to DnB and spread out to several genres.

I was pleasantly surprised to be perfectly honest. Will keep a close eye/ear on you! Thanks for sharing!

Hey thanks! And you caught me... I love soul! This was just an experiment because I love how DnB makes me feel. I have an eclectic mix of tunes I've recorded- will post more soon! Thank you for listening!

Saw the post in the forum and became interested and I'm glad I checked it out!

Very well arranged! It's got some addictive vibes and it keeps the listener guessing. From a producers point of view there would still be room for improvement and a bit of work on the build-up. Some harmonies would also be great in there as they would totally take it to a new dimension. I do personally feel the need of additional sounds (rhytmic, percussive or melodic) to surprise a bit the listener.

From an engineers perspective this needs work, the rhythm guitar could use some edit points here and there and some fine pitch tuning in certain points. The song pumps a bit and it creates a stutter like effect which makes it strange at least for me, the vocals melodic line is amazing and as I've previously said some carefull harmonies would greatly improve the sonic quality of the song or in music industry terms it would really add some ear candy. Overall it sounds great but I do feel it needs a wider space to sit in as the whole song just calls for a big etherial space. I know I'm pointing out many mistakes but they are not mistakes but rather points that stand out and could be improved.

Overall it is a radio friendly production and all I can add is thanks for sharing.

Hey there Malu :) it's always a pleasure when you listen to our stuff and make those constructive critics, but as you know production wise we only know so much... woulb be nice to have an engineer and work with a producer for sure.

Again thanks for listening and reviewing it Malu.

on HORIZON - BILBOZO by Bilbozo
Wow! This is something! I always enjoyed symphonic metal and this is right up that alley! Although a bit on the soft side it still delivers that edge and power that both an Orchestra Ensemble and electric guitars should deliver.

I'm am gonna say that it sounds a bit dark and I guess you've had a bit of trouble getting everything to sit in it's right place! There is a bit to much low mid info in brass, horns, strings, guitars and all those compete quite a bit in there. A very hard genre to mix but very rewarding once you get it right!

Enjoyed the arrangement really much and in quite a few places it reminded me of Kamelot, Epica and similar bands which I really enjoy!

Thanks for sharing!

I really love this!

There are a couple of problems though! The kick disappears once the guitars kick in and everything sounds a bit to midrangy.

Love the tune though and the way it progresses. It's got some serious potential but it needs a proper mix.

Reminded me a bit of All That Remains!

Will be on the lookout for a new version!

Cheers!

I agree with you, I thought the song was great and I felt it so i had to add some lyrics. If you're critiquing the music itself then you will have to take all that up with Onqel...he is the creator of the song. Otherwise, it's a beast of a song so far.

Fabulous! Now this is great!

Love the vibe! Very very good production! The vocals are a bit buried in the mix. Have you tried a doubler on a parallel track? That will really bring them forward and add a bit of presence.

I'm really loving your work! Will keep your page bookmarked!

Cheers!

Yeah, on this one, both guy and girl have a double track ( the guy gets a third one in some parts ). But the takes were really awful... I can't even remember how I got rid of the humming...

I don't know if this is smart or not, but I changed the doubletrack EQing to make it sound a lil different, and moved it a few ticks off... Tried using a plugin ( Waves OneKnob Wider ) but it revealed some unwanted artefacts in the background...

Thanks for listening, reviewing, and for sharing your knowledge...

Peace.

Ahh! Reggae! Love it!

I'm becoming a fan of your work!

Love the track but since I'm an engineer I'm gonna add a couple of things that might help you out.

Widen the drums! There is a tad to much room in them and they sound very mono. There is also a tad to much midrange and that gives it a nasal quality (to much 1.5kHz maybe).

Love the vocals! Very good performance! The production is really good! You should if you don't already have a job in a studio. You've got great skills!

Thanks mahloo for these precious tips ! I'm gonna try it as soon as I get back home !

I had a very very very... VERY difficult session with this one... Drums and horns especially were HELL to record... I think in the beginning I wanted to hear very crisp drums, with a very aggressive hi-hat and cyms... BUT... This is what you get when you mess with the mics :D

More seriously, I couldn't find a solution neither for horns nor the drums, so I'd left'em like this...

Again thank you for your tips, I really appreciate man...

Peace.
Chris

( by the way, no, I'm not workin' in a studio, not even in music unfortunately )

Oui oui!

Loving this Chris! Believe it or not I've always loved french hip-hop! I'm a big Soprano fan.

Love the production on this one! It sounds a bit dark though! Do you use NS10's by chance. I make the same mistake sometimes when working on them.

Anyways totally love this! I just wish it would be a bit wider. Or maybe it's because it's so dark that I have the impression that it's a bit narrow.

Anyways very cool production man! Off to check some more!

Cheers!

Thank you Mahloo... This song is pretty old now and if I remember well, I was using... berhinger monitors... no comment :D

But rather than put the blame on the monitors, I'd better admit I have no particular audio knowledge... I'm a music player, I try to mix the best I can, but apart from watching youtube tutorials, you know, gotta do it with my ears rather than with my brains, and it limits what I can do... I wish I had been able to learn all that stuff... would have probably made things easier :D

Again thx for reviewing and very big thanks for all your tips shared here on the loop...

on Yesterday - Original - Feat BrainDED by RAFZTAR
The track has some potential but it needs serious work on the mix side. Very distorted.

It could work well on the chorus with a female vocal. The one you currently is hard to take seriously because it's pitched.

The song overall is very catchy and that's good. This could become big but as I've said it needs attention.
RAFZTAR
RAFZTAR replied 7th Jun 2012 - 13 years ago
what part is distorted, the vocals, bass or fllute sample?

In terms of taking seriously, really? How many recent song can you take seriously? For me if it sounds good, il be playing it.

I havent ventured into the realm of professional music mastering, so if you or anyone else can do this, you could really help out

Thanks Mahloo - Im not great with mastering and mixing and hadn't noticed that the vocals weren't centred. I'll fix it and update it! Savali really went all out with the recording this time - sounds so much nicer without a ton of filters over her voice!

Like the drums and the sample is fantastic. Very great use to create that nice draggin' groove. Keeps you noddin'.

There's a tad to much room in the vox and that makes them sound boxy but other than that the rhythm and delivery is fabulous.

I'd keep that kick under control first and foremost. A bit to much....are you using a sub when mixing?...turn the bass a bit up and it should fix that problem.

I'd also do a high pass filter around 30 or 40Hz. Might help get a couple of dB's of extra push on the limiter.

The track has a nice dark vibe however that kick being so loud makes everything seem distant.

Other than that a good effort.

Nice nice nice!

I like the rhythm of those drums! The guitars do their job well and create a pad like atmosphere!

Would've been nice to create a structure of chorus and verses as it's a bit linear at the moment but it definitely has potential.

Maybe bring those soft parts for the verse and leave the heavy part for the chorus. Add vox to all that and you have a killer track!
xpekt
xpekt replied 23rd May 2012 - 13 years ago
Thanks Mahloo!! Glad you've liked the track. And yes, I always try to get the chorus/verse like structure but since I use drumloops sometimes I just can“t get that to work out so I divide the track in parts with a bridge linking them. The only bad side to that is that the track is not as dynamic as it could be...

Nice beat! I like that guitar in there, works really great and sets the mood of the song!

Woud have loved the vocals a bit louder and with some addlibs panned left and right here and there.

Anyways a very good effort!
JekyllandHyde
JekyllandHyde replied 24th May 2012 - 13 years ago
Yeah, I never normalized the track which would have made the vocals a bit louder. But i still plan on turnin them up a bit. And I did the adlibs with it and i didnt really like them honestly. I decided it sounded better to me with just a verse and no adlibs, but yea maybe ill go back and redo some.
thanks for the input

Are you going after Dre's "Kush". Lol!

Cool sounding track though! I like how you've incorporated those synths in the background and that choir really adds a different and dark vibe.

Nice arrangement and great use of acoustic and synthetic elements.

I would have processed differently the vocals cause you have a good tone and it's a shame ruining it with extreme settings on pitchtuning (just my opinion if that's the sound you are after than props to you for creating your trademark).

I like how the track sounds overall and the mix is pretty good, the vocals are to shinny here and there but nothing to serious or dramatic.

Great work!

on The Breakup by Mykael
I really like the vibe! You've got a classic right here!

I do believe the vocals need tuning or maybe a couple of punch-ins here and there to fix the pitch issues, cause there are a couple of places where you go a bit off.

Otherwise this has a great vibe going on, John Legend/Ritchie kind of vibe...retro yet modern.

Good job!
Mykael
Mykael replied 23rd May 2012 - 13 years ago
You're FAST! Thanks Mahloo for listening and comments. Yeah, the vocals will be redone (I don't believe in punch-ins or auto-tunes). It is not quite a full song, but it's getting there.

This feels really live and surprisingly that works really really well! A bit of everything in this one!

I like that bass moving around and I absolutely loved that snare.

At one moment when the keys came in I was thinking this is going into Hip-Hop (due to the chord progression) but it never crossed the boarder.

Kind of retro sounding but in a very good way.

Yeah Dusty always had great beats!

Honestly man I'd like to hear some of this stuff without Auto-Tune. I've got a feeling it would turn out quite well.

The flow is pretty insane and definitely helps the track a lot.

I'd double track some adlibs to give a bit of width and depth and it will also help shape a more professional sound.

Very good effort though!

on Only If She Knew by TruthLoveTrust
This is a bit to scratchy in the high end and kinda distorts to much. The kick is not really sounding great!

Anyways the track has some potential and some cool melodic lines which could become interesting or more emphasized once a vocal line is added. The track has a more modern RnB sound and that's nice as it has a bit of commercial touch in it.

If you'd work a bit more on emphasizing the changes between the chorus and the verses and create some variation in the drums this could definitely work out impressively well.

All the best!

Well this is the first mono track I'm hearing today! You could widen it up a bit to make it more impressive.

The mix could use some attention as well as some of the elements are just to distorted and buried in there, of course that may change of the track widens a bit but a t the moment it just sounds that way.
