on Souls in Shadow feat Aurielle Marie TheHyperchick by AxonRise
I'm surprised I haven't heard your stuff earlier. Just noticed your post in the forums with the link to the video of this song.

I totally like the arrangement. The sound is great as well though I do feel it needs automation to better balance out things especially on some of the chuggs as due to the doubling they become very nasaly and obvious. The solo should come up as well as needs a bit more ambiance. The transition after the solo (around 3:09) is to sudden and it feels as if it doesn't belong there. I don't know if this is the kind of feedback you've wanted but it should be taken as constructive criticism. :D

Great song though and I'm glad I've found your stuff. Will be keeping an ear out for your stuff. Faved the song!

Cheers!

Thank you so much! I always have trouble getting my lead guitars and solos to cut through and still have the atmosphere provided by reverb and delay without drowning in the mix. I appreciate your feedback though dude, thank you! ^_^

Pro tools, cubase, reaper...doesn't really matter which daw you use. I run protools because it's the norm and I need interchangeability with other studios and artists and I also like it a lot, and know it pretty well so I can edit really fast and be eficient with it.

As for recording/ mixing tips, feel free to ask questions, I'm always open for discussions. I do a lot of production work also, like taking peoples songs and ideas and working them into full productions with the artists themselves so feel free to contact me if you wanna go down that road. You've got a great voice that has potential for heaview, denser songs as well.

Cheers!

I am more then happy to work with anyone on anything.. Daw.. however.. i am not yet using a DAW.. I am using a roland 2480 that I just got in July.. which is light years ahead of where I was when i left music..lol.. ( early 90's) I decided on protools.. as like you said is the industry standard.. and I have no idea. of any of it.. so figured if im going to learn.. it might as well be on that.. Get it right going in and the rest is easier... kind of...=O).. Ill be posting more stuff.. need to get some better guitars.. a bass.. etc.. this was just a get my feet wet kinda thing.. this song is a song I wrote almost 20 / 25 years ago.. when I was around 17 /18 years old .. Ive got alot to learn.. but ..ill get there.. compliments like yours and Bradosanz.. gives me a good boost of confidence also..... so thanks so much for that....

Woah! Now this is a bit of fresh air. Great voice! You need a bigger song to perform on!

As for the mix, well it's pretty basic but works well. As a production advice you could double that rhythm guitar to make the record sound wider but also leave some elements mono to create movement. Loved the sound however and totally like your voice! Keep at it and thanks for sharing!

Now this has some potential! Simple yet emotional arrangement! The chorus works great and the rap is spot on. A bit more work on the mix and it would really take it to a whole new level. Great production to be honest, very smooth!

Pretty good man! There are some technic things to point out though. The bass is to heavy and uncontrolled and it makes everything distort. And...edit the guitars a lot tighter...trust me I work with this genre day in and day out and guitars and drums are edited to the grid.

Great playing though. Like your videos too.

Cheers!

Great sound! I totally love the fx and foley in the intro. Afterwards it just gets better and better.

That kick drum is interesting, definitely goes well with the overall dark sound. I really like how open the guitar sounds and how well it works with the rest of the instrumentation. That bass is really deep, I love it's sound, there is something about that simple bass line that just drags you back into the song.

Very well done! I really like this song!

Hey Mahloo thanks man! I got that sound from my electric acoustic 5 strung with black nylon tapewounds using a piezo under saddle, since this track I've added a magnet pickup to the bass as well to expand the tonal possibilities, glad you enjoyed the track mate, very much appreciated!..cheers Dave :)

I honestly don't know if I've checked out any of your productions yet but I'm glad I did it today.

Amazing production in all honesty. You've got great potential with this style of music as ranges from modern country to softrock and poprock. I really am amazed. Actually downloaded the whole loop pack cause I wanted to get a feel of the arrangement in my studio.

Put me on the fans list!

Great work!

PS: As an idea...layering would be even better, and I mean electric guitars, just so that you build up to that last chorus and it becomes more and more powerfull. But anyways it's just an idea!

Took a listen after your message. I really like the bottom end of the bass guitar. Great tune, classic vibe, some cool effects on the vocals. Could use some transitional effects here and there to switch things up, speaking from a producers point of view. The drums need to be more powerful to drive that wall of sound. Definitely has some great potential.

on Backstabbers Harvest by Evisma
Hey EVisma,

So you've asked for my opinion and here it is.

The main problem you have are the drums and the balance. Everything is pushed way to upfront and you get overlapping frequencies. I don't have th eindividual files of your song to make an accurate analysis as most of the times the source is what's the problem. I'm not saying that's the case but you might be doing to much because of the sources sound.

Anyways if you listen from start till 0:48 you'll notice the drums are pretty much stereo (I believe it's a loop) and after that they go pretty much mono and you lose a lot of impact and depth by doing that. The kick gets buried and doesn't have enough impact to carry the weight of the song and interlock with the bass guitar.

The snare is distorted and thin sounding, it doesn't have any stereo feel at all, the snare always benefits from a room reverb, even if you trigger a sample with a room sound and blend it in it will help make the kit sound more 3D and real.

The cymbals...they are really loud and that's causing distortion. I believe you didn't do any automation within the song and the cymbals could use a bit of volume riding. Overall anyways the problems start from there, the drums sound is mono, muffled and without any 3D feel or perception and from there you end up boosting everything to make it compete and eventually lose instruments in the mix or cover up certain things.

The bass from my point of view sounds great. I like the way the notes pop out. Pretty cool from my point of view.

Anyways you could always send the individual files my way and I could give you a better analysis or even try to mix it. The choice is yours. It would definitely make a better tutorial subiect than a perfectly tracked song. :)

I hope I wasn't harsh cause that was NOT my intention.

Evisma replied 14th Apr 2016 - 9 years ago
Thank you for the review. Honesty has never offended me. It is appreciated.

This basically reenforces what I've been told to do for over three years. Get EZ Drummer. I use the stock instrument in StudioOne called Presence. Problem is it treats a whole kit like it's a single element. No individual panning, all or nothing. Impact is a better instrument that is stock, but it's 99 percent hip hop and useless to me. I've been leery about spending over a hundred bucks on something intangible. Guess it's time.

Thank you for your time and honesty. I greatly appreciate it.

on Intricacies of the Mind by EphyMusic
I like the vibe you've got going on and the sureal slightly ambiental sound is great. Really layed back. Great use of filters and effects for the transitions, that is hard to do and get it right but you've done it really well.

As far as mastering goes I must admit you need to do a bit of mix work first. Although things could be fixed with mastering, it would be a bit limited in terms of fixes that could be done.

The first thing I noticed was a bit of harshness in the upper mids and some boxiness overall, which I tend to atribute to a not so great monitoring environment.

The kick is a pretty good kick but it's boxy and sounds muddy, you could try removing a bit of 180-250hz and if that makes it sound to thin you could go a bit higher around 300hz or so. These are just some general frequencies that tend to cause problems. You could also slightly sidechain compress the bass to better blend it with the kick.

The snare/clap sound is pretty good and works as is to keep that chill vibe. Personally I would've boosted some 180hz to give it a bit more weight but that might be a matter of taste.

The hihats are really muffled and while I get that you are going for a darker sound they really muffle the track a lot and sound way to dark when in contrast with the effects which are nice and silky.

Overall it ain't to bad but it ain't perfect either as some elements are way to dark while others are way to shinny and silky.

As for mastering you could always try mid-side eq to widen the track and work separatelly on the mid and side sections. On the sides you could high pass a lot and that will really enable you to push it in terms of loudness, it ain't really a necesity but it would give you that option if so you wish.

Lately clippers are used a lot in mastering along with multiband compression and wideband compression.

You could also try something like Sonnox transient designer on the master, it could give you the edge you are looking for.

Anyways just my thoughts man. I like the song and the arrangement and I'm glad you didn't go in the general direction of dubstep/chillstep.

Cheers!

Nice! Very Nice! I totally love the arrangement with all of it's vibes. The performance is really great. I didn't quite like the sound of the rimshots...I always feel as if the metronome bleed into the track when I hear that, Lol! But this is really a great effort.

I like that bass rhythm going in the background it totally drives the track and keeps you moving. I feel as if the chorus could use a little bump as to me at least it feels as if it drops in intensity. A great effort overall though.

Interesting pan choice on the snare!

I really like the sound of that snare and the toms are delightful, mind sharing the mic choices for the toms and snare?

The backing track definitely is made for some drum solo stuff and I'm glad you've seen that potential in the track and jumped on it.

I can however hear some timing issues, you've concentrated to much on the double kick and it threw you off the groove in some sections. This is the actual King's X track and it's quite an amazing rock song, their best if you'd ask me.

...oh man that snare....I kept pressing play and play and play for that snare. Rock sound all the way...better than the original one.

I just noticed your reply! Well if that nasal quality is a result of a cold or flu then you shouldn't take any medication! Lol! It's what makes your voice recognizable and it's a rare quality (Amy Whinehouse, Adele, Joss Stone etc.) they all have that element that instantly makes you recognize them and you've definitely got it. Keep on doing music. Best wishes!

Very very good once again! You definitely need a producer and a demo. A bit of work on the arrangement could be needed to better emphasize the structure of the song and make it unpredictable. There is definitely a great amount of potential here and you are obviously very versatile with your voice, I've mentioned before that you have some nasal quality about your voice which makes it recognizable and it can really set you apart from other voices and that is extremely rare.

From a production point of view the song could use some building up structure wise and definitely needs some strings, you can easily build it up into a powerful song with a great, wide and emotional ending with a bit of production work.

Fabulous voice!

This was recorded as I was on the tail end of the flu (same with I'll Be Waiting) but if you heard the nasal in all my tracks... then I guess that is just how I sing :P
I really like the idea of this track, but like I said it needs work. My voice doesn't have the fire the lyrics deserve and it's definitely due to the lack of structure! Still a work in progress so I'm anxious to hear what becomes of it :)
Thank you for the feedback!

Cool rhythm! You've got that part down really well. The vocals work great and the chorus comes in nicely. I would've liked more impact on the chorus to define a bit the arrangement but it sounds good.

I feel the vocals are a bit to loud and the backing elements get a bit lost, also there is to much high end and everything sounds a bit thin. Ok that was the technical stuff.

Anyways cool song with a great vibe and good catchy rhythm and groove.

Hey thanks! I am by no means a producer, and I'm working with what I got and what I know how to do. I struggled with mixing this song to the point where I just gave up, and I agree that the high end is overpowering and the vocals are too loud at times. This is just a demo though, so once I'm able to get it done right it'll be loads better
