A bit of dischord at the start, but your song idea is great! Looking forward to the finished product!

Such a chill groove. That piano had me hooked at the start. If this your first song, then you have lots to look forward to :) I don't know if its just me but the bass sounds a bit out of tune at the start. Great work overall, sounds great. Good structure!

Thanks man! Good looking out. I caught the beginning bass being out of tune this morning! I've corrected it now, so that should be taken care of. Much appreciated again! Cheers!

on Smooth Rnb gets UNTRAPPED by ronabo
Wow, now this is RnB!! That relaxed, jazzy-style groove with the beautiful piano doing its runs, the keys doing those juicy bass chords, the drums maintaining their energy. This is definitely a great track. My favorite part was the keys that do a run at 1:56 and onwards. So smoothly played. Awesome job with the key changes as well, they were in good taste :)

I was reading your response to Static Nomad on EQ and a word of advice: it is usually not recommended to EQ an instrument solo. Something that sounds great on its own may not sit well when put into a cohesive mix with other instruemnts. I usually tend to EQ by group: guitars, synths/pads/strings/etc and make sure each section has its own part of the frequency spectrum it "dominates." This also helps to clean up the sound. For instance, you dont want unneeded high frequencies from my bass affecting my guitars so I'd trim off all the higher end on the bass and trim off some of the lower end of my guitars - now, the bass is not affected by the guitars and vice verse - each instrument has its place.

Just a thought :)

Wow, you had me hooked at the start. Those are some very unique synths with a catchy arpreggio. Wow.....As this goes further in, I'm falling more in love with this! Definitely downloading. Totally impressed by this. The drum beat is classic and the synth does a neat little progression that I adore. Beautiful work. That female vocal is edited beautifully as well. Great work!

What a way to start off the new year! I absolutley dig the part at 2:45ish. That solo synth is perfect against that bass line. A little boomy at some parts but overall a very powerful idea. Great work, I love this!

What mic did you use for the vocals? This was an extremely unique and catchy tune. Your voice is so intriguing to me. I want to stay and take it in because it sounds so different than what I hear on the radio, and that's not meant to be a bad thing. I like the uniqueness your voice carries. Those synths are always top notch as always. I'm glad that you're part of this forum and look forward to more of the music from your newest album :)

Hey buddy! Thanks for stopping by to listen! The microphone used on this one was my "100 Proof" electret condenser, which I built last year. It's actual a stereo microphone, but for vocals I just use one side (they have separate output jacks). Thank you for the compliments about the vocals. There are probably a few reasons for my voice sounding different from the usual radio stuff - a big one would be my background, as I have spent time in many different parts of the US and canada throughout my life, and picked up a conglomeration of the local accents. Also I have smoked various smokeables pretty much constantly for 25 years. Then there is my on and off obsession with European music and film (especially UK and anything Eastern Europe). In all honesty, a large part of the album is already posted here on Looperman, though some have updated mixing and/or mastering on the album (haven't updated the others yet). You can download it for free at wearerecords.com though. Best burned to a CD and played on a hi fi. Thank you for the nice comment!

I love that big house you got. The guitar adds lovely happy vibes that I really think help the song get a happy impression across. It's quite lovely. The bass is a bit overbearing in some parts (1:30 for example) but overall, this is definitely a hot track, even if it is a bit generic, which isnt a bad thing in this case. Great work, I'm looking forward to more :)

I like that clap sound. It stands out to me in a good way, and I don't know why. Is it an organic sound or something from software? Sounds really good. Gives a lot of space to the drums and the track overall. I like this a lot. Great work!

on Chasm by StaticNomad
Guitar-stretched greetings, my dearest Nomad.

That intro actually brought Van Halen to mind haha. Beautiful, strong and thick intro.

The guitar that comes in at the next segment really opens up the space of the track, sits nicely in the middle, pushes away everything else and draws all attention to it, like a diva in Los Angeles.

Sick little riffs you got going on with that lead, that reverb/delay you have applied to it is gorgeous, really adds that spark to the track as a whole. No complaints at all.

That guitar work that starts at 2:31 is sweet, subtle and addicting to my ears. Everything sounds so wide! And I think I can hear some stretched guitar here too?

That resting sound at the next segment is absolutely ace!! Perfect balance of drums, guitar and bass. You're too good at this! You SERIOUSLY need to make an album of your stuff. It's that good haha.

More slowed-down guitar that always makes my ears perk up. I love how it sounds slowed-down. Has this eerie, captivating, melancholic tone that overarches the rest of the high-energy track.

The solo at 4:18 is again, subtle, sweet, blends beautifully into the background but still maintains attention. You're pulling some sick plays on this one haha. You sound like you're having too much fun on this one haha.

That chord change at 5:00 is gorgeous and in good taste. It meshes so epic-ly with that guitar solo. The bass is big, airy and juicy. I love this!

The almost-dead silence at 5:42 is SO AWESOME. It draws all the attention to the stretched guitars. This is by far my favorite part of the entire song just because it's so different.

Then the next segment fires back in, lacking that solid bass that one does not notice is there until they hear the track without it. Beautiful mixing. Lots of energy, too beautiful for my ears haha. This is one of your best works in my opinion. That timestretching takes the track to a whole new level, in my humble opinion.

Drum pattern change breathes new life into the song and gives a sense of ending. More grungy, powerhouse goodness and a gentle solo overlaying it all.

It returns to a steady beat with more timestretched guitar and then it closes down slowly, being consumed by the time-stretched guitars. AWESOME. NUFF SAID.

StaticNomad

Stretchy word ups, yo, equally dearest Bradobro.

You seem to have put a short, standard Looperman comment such as "Nice track bro" through that timestretch software to produce a detailed, lengthy review. You'd think you'd just get "Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice trrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrack brooooooooooooooooooo" but the settings can be tweaked to make oh so much more.

I've never really heard anything I liked by Van Halen (Jump is decent) but I know EVH is a greatguitarist. Fun, fat intro here. Maybe I'll eventually find a VH track a little like it.

When I came up with the rather nice chords of the clean lead at 0:22, I knew I had something special. Big chill over big balls, so to speak.

"like a diva in Los Angeles"

is a fun analogy.

2:31 is me trying to play fast and up the badassery. Was meant to be longer but I'm trying to cram less in tracks these days so just made it brief.

2:32 very brief stretchy g fill and then 2:42 angelic stretchy voices.

"resting sound at the next segment"

Yes, I like the chilling, laidback drum comedown there (2:52) and that contains one of only two bass g sections.

3:13 new stretchy g that's very vocal at times especially breathy female vocal oddness at 3:35. Check 3:38 for the high "woo woo" notes.

I was trying for the badass guitar at 4:18 to be more upfront but I've somehow got the sound wrong. Cool playing but sound is not right.

"chord change at 5:00"

Not sure there is one but I do add some distorted bass g riffage to thicken shit up even more (on top of the synth sub bass).

"almost-dead silence at 5:42"

is pretty damn tight and hopefully a fun surprise. I needed to make some sort of transition and that turned out to be dramatic. Then more ambient chill female stretchy g vocals and we're back to another big riff, even if the transition to it isn't good enough. Yes, a very different chill section.

" lacking that solid bass that one does not notice"

Good point - that's pretty much the only time time the sub bass ain't playing.

"a gentle solo overlaying it all"

Lead at 7:35 is a return of the idea of chill guitar over badass riffage.

"being consumed by the time-stretched guitars"

is a good way to put it.

I agree that the stretchy guits do take it to some other, unusual level.

Wish I could make a track like this every day but I can't.

Am working on a few right now (including a chillfunk remix of this very track) but they're all currently no good. I have a lot of musical limitations.

Thanks for your kind and interesting words and yes, I must release some albums. One would be a start.

You should starting stretching guitar parts as well as your vocals for mega ambient sounds. It'll work, trust me...

Ahhh, those wide strings. So silky and wide. And I like the bass part as well. The way it works with that progression is beautiful. And the flute part really makes it all come together. The riff it plays really is catchy. Great work, the drums could be mixed a tad better, but it's not bad by any means. Sounds a bit odd in the mix - could be something that is caused by the frequency spectrum of the drums when layered over the instruments. While it stands just as well on its own, I think maybe making a bit of room in the frequency spectrum may help it to fit in just right to make a more cohesive whole.

on Roar Stone by StaticNomad
Trepidacious greetings, my godly Nomad.

That electric guitar at the beginning immediately drew me in to the song, and then those drums kick in and everything sounds like a relaxed, slightly energized rock track.

The next segment introduces those synths that are oh so you! What program did you use for the drums? They sound pretty real.

And did you play that guitar yourself? Sounds pretty dang epic. I dig it so far, I particularly like the segment at 1:30 where the guitar has a solo of sorts with a really cool delay on it. The guitar work is definitely the coolest part for me so far, stands out against your other tracks in this regard in my humble opinion. Maybe the volume nob could be turned up just a notch here though, sometimes I feel like the beauty of the solo gets lost in the other sounds, but only at certain parts. Definitely not a deal-breaker by any means.

The synths that move in at 2:25 are the simple signature of your synthy-groovy-Nomad-y roots that I've come to love as I listen to more of your stuff. The guitar is quite bangin' here too. :P

I like the syrupy feeling you achieved with the distorted guitar at 3:12. Feels so...creamy, 100 percent dairy cream.

That next segment with the wide pads - what did you use for that? Is that the extended guitar you mentioned to Cru Dawg? DANG it sounds awesome, wow. My mind is blown. That was beautiful. My favorite part so far.

The jazzy, comfy electric part at the next segment is great! So smooth, so happy, so awesome. I like how the distortion made it into an entirely different part at the next part even though its the same piece. Wow, this is definitely one of your best works so far.

It gets better the further in I go. You could make some sick 3 minute rock tracks with your own flair if you really wanted to haha. Your guitar work definitely is not amateur, and your mixing skills only serve to make it sound bigger than life.

I LOVE THOSE STRETCHED GUITARS AT THE END. YOU COULD MAKE AN ENTIRE SONG WITH THOSE STRETCHED GUITARS AND I WOULD CRY FROM THE SHEER BEAUTY.

Originality: 10/10
Mixing Quality: 9/10
Overall Impression: 10/10

Godly greetings, BS.

No idea if/why you're feeling trepidation but not to worry.

You've become a fine reviewer. It helps when you say more. I'm not just looking to hear whether someone liked a track or not. Detail helps me understand what I've made from other people's perspectives.

I do get some pretty realistic drum parts and they come, in every track, from Superior Drummer, which also loads all EZ Drummer kits (most of which I have steadily collected in the last couple of years).

I also use lots of drum loops (though none here) but that's more for particular flavour and feel. Drum loops tend to still be combined with more intricate and realistic programmed Superior kits.

All guitar in my tracks I play myself though I'm a massive cheat as I do shitloads of editing to get to the best bits. I'm a pretty lazy player and don't practise much so there are lots of mistakes and average bits in most recorded takes. Also unexpected moments of improvisational magic/luck.

1:30 lead is another recycled bit of lead, delayed slide playing.

" I feel like the beauty of the solo gets lost in the other sounds"

That would be because I've got a rhythm guitar part underneath. I tried not to make it clash with the lead but it's a heavily edited track so some things may be a little loose and messy.

2:25 synth seems to stand out to everyone so far. Good to know.

"syrupy feeling you achieved with the distorted guitar at 3:12."

Totally agree. Just plugin distortion that feels really warm. And the loud synth sub bass helps too.

"wide pads"

are timestretched resonator parts as there are no synth pads at all. You're in luck as you too can very soon make this sort of sound. Here's the free software I use (sadly, not a plugin):

http://hypermammut.sourceforge.net/paulstretch/

Stretched guitars at the end also done using Paul. Lovely sound that works especially well on slide guitar parts. Slide is already kind of stretching the notes.

Good to hear you liked the little funky triplet chill guitar at 5:31. Playing is a bit off in places but I couldn't replay it cos I've forgotten how.

I would make 3 min tracks but that length feels too short for my mind expanding style. If it's good, deep and interesting, I want it to go on for longer.

Congrats on your new BS track rating system and thanks again for your interesting and accurate detail.
