Hell Yeah!! I love anything with a latin flare to it. You have a cool idea with the intro. That in itself could be taken as song idea, keep the western idea going. But when it all kicked in I was all in for the ride.
Guitars sound great, nice tone and well played. I really liked the vocal at the end. You consider adding some more like that in the track or just the one shot? Just an idea.
Thanks Wayne, yeah good to know you dig some Latino sounds. I have sprinkled several of my latest tracks with some of it but this one is pretty much straight forward. Haha, so you even like the grito huh? Yes, I took a chance putting that in but it fits and I enjoyed doing it very much. More than one might be over doing it tho. But its after all very popular in mainstream musica Mexicana. Glad you dig it man and again Gracias for the kind words of support.
It's people like you who put me off! Pack my bags and give it up.
This is brilliant and should be on vinyl somewhere with a great rattle snake cover.
Wow is my best critical comment.
One of the most innovative and creative 5 minutes I've ever heard here...man, you are really an unknown genious...:-)
That guitar tune is sharp as knife and those progy drums and that scream at the end...hahhh...will read the story but I have to listen this hundred times...
Wow danke you scared me there for a second!
I do agree that I'm relatively unknown, but genious is really stretching it man. But I sincerely appreciate your exuberance my friend. I'm glad you like the track, I wasn't sure if anyone short of Latino would actually enjoy this particular style. Especially the scream! Haha, I very much had to work that into the crescendo ending, mainly for fun !
I can't stop listening to this. If you check my influences, you'll see that you and I may be cut from the same 2x4. Downloaded, gonna add bass and vibraslap, it's my birthday so I consider it a gift...don't worry, I won't post it. I'll just send you what I came up with and leave it up to you.
I'm late in my replies to these comments, sorry guys, but SupaFreakshow did in fact lay down some pretty sick bass to this track. I have requested he send me a clean .wav of the bass so I can possibly do some editing with it. I will re-post when complete for you all to hear.
This started out like Willie Nelson, broke into some Earth, then went into unchartered heavy rock goodness. The time signature, or signatures, keep me paying close attention. Listening on a shyte laptop, so not noticing any bass. If there is none, I'd be happy to offer up some Geezer Butler-ness.
Willie Nelson, c'mon bro! Haha !
The time signatures I believe are a mixture of 3/4 or 6/8 (hemiola which is widely used in latin music) and in some places reverts to a straight 4/4. There is bass but may be hard for you to make out on the ol laptop speakers. Plug in some head phones or ear buds ese for the best stereophonic experience. But I would happy to hear some Geeze as well !
Love reading the historical events that led to the birth of so many cool creepy legends. I'm more familiar with the Ickabog Crane and the headless horseman of massachussettes tale but have heard a similar one from Texas. Can you imagine what those who encountered EL Muerto must've thought of that decomposing headless thing on horseback! Music fits the tale well. \m/
Hey Katz, over the years I have found myself in some really crazy situations and this one was certainly one of the more bizarre. To this day when I think back on it I try to rationalize it and make myself believe what we had seen had to have been a real horse. I dont choose to believe in ghosts, mainly because they scare me! But then why could we not find any horse tracks in the area where we had seen this happen? We also drove around to some of of the neighboring farms and inquired if they had seen anything or had any of their horses get out, and none said they had. Anyhow, its a mystery that will never be solved but I still get chills when I think about it and I don't like to be around horses. The friend I spoke of, whose name is Gil Chavira, now believes we did in fact see El Muerto. This song, I will dedicate to him.
Sorry for delayed response TeeGee, I don't get back to my older tracks often enough. Yes tone is the holy grail and Billy has definitely drank from the cup. He is a master of tone. Thanks for the comment bro.
This song's vibe totally conveys the emotion put into it...it is a beautiful peace of work. Great guitar and fantastic dynamics and mastering. This is the first time Ive heard one of your songs and you sir are a true artist
Sorry for the delay on responding here Gnasty, got real busy the last week or so. Really good to see some new faces (or at least avatars) on the boards and listening to my tracks. I will check out your stuff as soon as I can. Thanks for the listen and kind words bro, I very much appreciate it.
I am only stopping by momentarily, and then I will be gone - possibly to the afterlife.
" it sounded way too dismal and dreary"
No - must have just been your mood as it's more beautiful than sad. Sometimes I go through a whole day or thinking the music I'm currently working on (and sometimes even pretty much everything I've made) is either pretty crap or, at best, just not good enough. Sometimes I abandon it for a while, open it up again and realise it's pretty awesome. Sounds like you did something similar here.
"life is short."
Yes but as the comedian Chris Rock said a while ago in a standup show: "Life is real long if you end up with the wrong woman". Or something like that.
No need to peel your eyes anymore as here is the link to my Tool cover, which will most likely kick your ass and smear your face in the concrete...
Your absolutely right, mood has a lot to do with the way we interpret and respond to things. Haha, I guess Chris has figured out a good way to prolong life ! Or at least to make it seem prolonged. I have already checked out your track, its bad, as in "bad ass" !!!!!
Thanks again my brutha from a different mutha.
Very interesting expression here, and minimalist in a good way. I think your guitar part displays a lot of grief and regret, not to mention sounding great. If you dont' mind me asking, what do you use for a baritone gutiar? I couldn't ask for much more from a track like this. I feel what you are going through in a way, as since I moved to this house, I've lost over 70 friends; from firearms, pharmaceuticals, traps, crack, prison and things such as these. It may not make sense, but that's how it feels. Glad you are making it through!
Yes I'm glad to hear you like the minimal nature of the track. I had a 7 string Washburn that I traded in for a Schecter Blackjack C8 8 string just prior to making this. Its a fabulous guitar.
Man, I think if I were you I would consider moving out of that house!
Take care and thanks for the comment Spiv.
Damn, this is very well composed. Didn't you just comment on my latest track about posting a song without drums and getting backlash? hehe
Contemplating the "big" questions about life is profound. Most people don't think too deep about such things. I found when I had something similar happen and I did the same thing. Just to be able to display those emotions in the form of music is pretty special and therapeutic.
Your guitar is the best toned, I've ever heard (truly)...sadness is one of the biggest 'energy' to create unforgettable musics...you did it...hats off...
Emotion is a huge influence in our lives and of course it plays a big part in what we all are doing here. I really fell in love with Baritone guitar years ago taking some lessons in Classical and Jazz and having to listen to all sorts of guitar music. Its really gained in popularity recently. Almost every major guitar manufacturer now offers a baritone version.
Short but very much to the point, I hear the tweaks that are needed
didn't seem to be a big problem, never the less I understand...
Solid style of playing colourful and informative in emotion...
Hit the nail on the head with this one...
I listened through this again and have made a few adjustments in mind. hopefully will get them completed in the next few days.
Thanks for the listen and comment TG.
Yeap. I can read the sadness in this song, but also i can read some confusion. I think that the pad in start there is nothing to do here. Absolutely nothing! This guitar is awesome. All is need is that voice pad synth, but when it starts it also ends the song!! Work more with this flower and make it grow like it should be. Peace.
I originally planned on having nothing but the guitar and as a second thought I decided to add the Synth. Which I also use in the outro behind the vocals. I wanted to give it some fullness but still retain the simplistic feel.
Thanks for your comments bro, they are much appreciated.
sorry for your loss first and foremost. I can definitely feel the sound of reflecting back on life in a somber tune on this track. aside from those emotions I also think the guitars give a calming vibe to the whole thing, not giving it a brighter mood but a more relaxing one. I'll end this by telling you a cliche that "most great works of art cannot exist without pain". good song man
Absolute beauty in such darkness... Music is an excellent way of dealing with depression too. I like to think in time we'll again meet those we've lost in a better place. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnQVV5m6Yws
^ The other enduring question "why?"
Thanks for the listen and comment Katz.
I like the "beauty in darkness" quote.
None of us can be sure of what's on the other side, or even if there is an "other" side at all. So, we just have to make the best of what time we have in this reality. Slow down, take a few moments to look at the living world around you and consider all the wonderful things there are to behold. Consider what is important to you. Make time for the ones you love and let them know how much they mean to you.
I am feeling the sadness here but more beauty, actually.
Good pad intro - sounds like it might be a trance track but no. However, I feel the drop into some tasty guitar playing feels slightly abrupt. Could be nice if you were to keep another perhaps subtle pad going underneath to ease that transition. So, a bit like what is happening when you reintroduce the pad around 1:35.
Some good gently strummed guitar chords and 0:52 tasty little fill and then some cool harmonics. You're moving around the neck quite tastefully in this one.
1:55 can I hear some distant choir voices?
I agree that this is probably a little too short. I'm thinking maybe add another minute or so.
In other Nomad-based news, I am putting finishing touches to perhaps my most badass ever track - a cover of Tool's exceptional 46&2 - only synths and drums, no guitar or other instrument playing from me on it. Look out for that being uploaded to a Looperman website near you in the next few days.
Congrats on this though I feel you can do a little more with it...
Funny thing about this track, when I first worked on it, it sounded way too dismal and dreary, too much of a downer so I shelved it. Not really the type of music I prefer. Then the other day I ran across it for the first time in several months and decided to give it a listen and was amazed that how different it sounded or felt to me. I guess originally my bummed out mood had a negative effect on my feelings toward it. I made some slight changes in arrangement and added the choir voices and that's it.
I named it "Ephemeral" which means brief, momentary, short lived. Not so much because the song is short but because in reality life is short. We all will someday take that last breath and wish we had more time.
Hey yeah, I'm excited by the news of this Tool cover your foretelling. My eyes are peeled for it bro.
this is some really fine production from you. Well written, solid played, nicely balanced... but too short!
definitely a rock territory for me, not ambient that much (more cinematic - rock band with orchestra kind of thing even). Too bad I can hear the mp3 format distortion on the orchestra tracks from 1:34. was it intentional?
I can remember some trance-style synth presets on your older metal song - here no difference (I can hear them on the intro section) but this particular combination still works really fine.
Somehow I find the chord progressions from your song sounding quite similar to the cello intro of 'Suffering' - a composition by Danielsson/Mozdzer/Fresco https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OE0Avd0uV1g
From my view and experience it seems like there are no sounds in depression at all. Actually it is the apparent and temporary state of absolute lack of creativity. I have forced myself to create and tried to put myself in apparent 'creative' situations to break that state many times over last few years. Partially that's why I am here now on looperman creating the tracks. I think 'depression' is a very profound statement (and ultimate state of being) in opposite to 'sadness' which is only a temporary mood. It may be only a play of words as well.
I do like trance style synth and I am notorious for melding unlikely styles without a care of what the purists think. If it sounds decent I will try it. Man thanks so much for the link to Lars Danielsson ! Amazing player and you can bet I will be trying to glean some of those scales and runs.
Yeah on this track I tried some solo improvisation. I studied Jazz guitar for a while and really got into the flamenco styles with its varied rhythms, fingered harmonics and strong use of scales, modes and arpeggios. I never really applied it much or got good enough to play at speed. This track is slow enough for me hit most of the notes. Layered the guitar tracks with some focal low register. I dig that Baritone.
I tend to think there is not much difference between depression and sadness sometimes. My usage here was referencing sadness with the loss and emptiness associated with the deaths of friends and loved ones. Depression on the other hand set in when I maybe dwelled on the subject too long. Realizing time is fleeting and age is creeping.
Thanks for the nice words here Alex. Oh and I will try to clean up that distortion you mentioned.
Perfect expression of that moment of thought. Intro is a favorite which is followed by some nice guitars. Agree that all situations can server as motivation for creativity. It's what you do with this sounds, and as here its used well. Thanks for sharing, Keep at it! Peace.
Yesterday, my wife and I were driving west in the evening sun. She started bitching about how bright it was. I looked at her, and in a deadpan voice said, "Now, go out and get yourself some big black frames."
Without skipping a beat, she says, "With the glass so dark they won't even know my name!??"
I love my wife just a little bit more, now.
This is some fine-ass guitfiddlin' my friend. The others are right about the tone, too. It's a spot on recipe for that Texas flavor. I've always loved ZZ Top. Much like you, I prefer the earlier years. I like everything post 1983, but I can't recall any tracks that really stand out, like I can the years before that.
I can see why a few others have made mention of the drums, (or, lack thereof.) Usually when you think Texas blues/rock, you think big rockin' drums, and heavy basslines. My brain was expecting some to kick in, as well. But, taking into consideration the information you gave us in the description, the drums are just fine, and serve their purpose just as planned. I do think there could be a little more variation, but it's no deal breaker for me. I still like it just as it is.
" Valvedriver probably doesn't have any Peyote up there in the hills, but them shrooms of his are just as potent!"
That's all you need to say, brother!
...and, with that being said...
Take care, my friend!
Sounds like the wifey is pretty cool there Aaron! I would say definitely a keeper. Yeah like several other bands of the Mtv era, the little ol' band from Texas went a bit too commercial for my taste. But they reaped the spoils and I cant say I blame them for taking advantage of opportunity. This is one of those tracks where as a creator you have this idea that you think everyone will get the point and feel the same as you about, but turns out ... not so much. So I may have missed the mark with this but I realize you cant win them all. Anyhow I've got a few other tracks in the works that are guitar experiments and hopefully I can garner some greater interest in.
Take care bro and as always I appreciate and value your comments and support.
