the midi drum you set up here catches my attention throughout the listen. The guitars are jamming well with interest, sounds like a song i heard some time ago in a place far far away.

The arrangement is solid sounding good. Not sure but it sounds like its missing something. What other instruments have you been messing with? Also I was thinking what if you add a passage of vocal samples to represent a meeting of the cryptic council? Kinda play with the title a bit more. Noticed it does help with the mental side of the scene.

I think the riffs here are badass, maybe one day I could make something good as I hear here. Thanks.

Yo. Being the nomad that I am, I can't help wandering about all over the place. Even when I can't be bothered, my legs sometimes just won't stop. And I doubt I've wandered onto anyone else's Looperman tracks more than yours. A fine subterranean sonic realm it is.

"not too shabby either, if I may pretend to have an ego. "

Damn right you can have an ego. I'm proud of lots of stuff I've made and you should be too (of yours, not mine - that wouldn't make much sense). Being proud of successes probably inspires more. I try to think of my tracks as if I were a fan of them and they had been made by someone else - which is my attempt at being objective and trying to hear what I've actually produced rather than get caught up in too many little details. And I do actually sit back and listen to my tracks. You know - for a bit of pleasure. Also, there are so many bits that I can't remember them all in my head so have to listen again to be reminded.
"This track involved a bit of luck, I believe."

Well mabe a bit though I fail to see where the luck is in your bass ability. Maybe you just continually fluke out with killer riffs. You're like the world's luckiest bass player or something. You're actually crap but pure freak chance puts your fingers in the right place all the time. You're going to be so busted when your luck runs out!

"fuck with the same synth parameter for two and a half hours just to accidently lose it by getting "click-happy".

Gotta be very careful there. I do very little hardware controller manipulation of parameters so tend not to change a setting without noticing (only to come back later to find the patch is now ruined and I can't fix it).

One way round this is to save in the same track folder a patch setting for each synth patch that's working really well. Then, if you fiddle about and screw it up, you can just reload that saved one and everything should be fine and sync up with any automation data you have going on. I also continually save new versions of the track I'm working on so can also open previous versions of the song to get settings that I've since screwed up.

P.S. Finally, I have cool band recommendation for you. The awfully named Maria Isn't A Virgin Anymore. Shocking name but don't be put off as they make awesome, alternative, intelligent stoner-related stuff with some Toolish/youish basslines. I think I just made up the word 'youish' but not sure what else I could have gone with. Sorry I haven't provided a link but will another time (if necessary). I bet you one cookie (not the silly internet browser trojan buggy thing version) that you love them.

Although not really my style, Evan, I hear much talent in your piece. The mix is very clean and I hear all the instrument clearly. Very good drum track, too. You programed it very well.

And I'm back! Enjoying listening to this one again.

First thought, aside from the killer riffs, is how good the drums sound. So good you're not dependent on loops anymore. You've now got the movement and emphasis and a cleaner sound than you had with the loops.

But don't forget about them entirely. I still use them but as a sort of flavour rather than something I depend on.

No sure what you've changed since last time but there is really so much killer playing in here. It's a bit like one of my tracks but rather than multiple riffs and sounds being spread out across loads of instruments, it's really all just on one. Which is damn hard to do.

It's probably a genuine bass masterpiece (not quite sure how to 'prove' that)and I don't hear it as lacking anything.

2:07-2:28 I do not remember and suspect it may be new. I like it.

Winding down ending after 3:11 is great and probably new too. You're dong something that sounds fresh and different right up to the end of this very varied track.

Yes, if this is 90BPM in the DAW, you're definitely doing double time so 180. This is one track that really races away. Oh, and the distortions sound fine.

Surely one of your finest and I'd love to be able to come up with something similar.

And the Nomad meanders into the subterranean sonic realm yet again!

No update here, just a revisiting. One of my favorites, with Twisicles, FriedEyed&TieDyed;, and Weapons Of Mastication. Chopstick Showdown is not too shabby either, if I may pretend to have an ego.

This track involved a bit of luck, I believe. I must have been just high enough to be productive, and not so stoned that I sit and fuck with the same synth parameter for two and a half hours just to accidently lose it by getting "click-happy".

Thanks for the sojourn, next time I'll have cookies.

Yo. With your explanation, I now like the title. I have bad teeth too though don't know how many real ones are left. Would be funny if it was 19. Must remember to ask dentist next time I go.

$6,800 is a lot of money. A good few quality basses there, or maybe just a super special limited edition one.

You are duty-bound to check out the excellent band Morphine. In some countries, anyone making bass-drums-sax music is legally required to check out at least some of their material. In the strictest legal systems, it is a criminal offence not to pore over their entire back catalogue (only about 5/6 albums, slide bass player/singer/songwriter died of a heart attack on stage in 1998). In other places, you're only required to listen to, say, the albums Cure For Pain and Like Swimming a few times.
Not sure how onerous the US requirements are though note that you have now been warned.

As a bass player, you have to be interested in a guy who I think is the only 2-string slide bass player ever. If there's another, I'd like to hear him. Actually, I should really become that second slide bass player though probably need a custom bass for it. Saw a Youtube video of a guy who built his own 2-string bass designed expressly for slide and it sounded great. Just like Mark Sandman (of Morphine).

But, in your track, you're doing something they didn't do, which is provide a heavier bass and drums backing to that sax. So you're already doing something different.

Anyway: I'll give a more detailed review later but for now will say there are some synth problems with this update. The sax in the intro doesn't groove and sounds a bit fake. It sounds better once bass and drums have come in.
Work on the lengths of those notes and make sure they groove and sound a bit more loose and natural. Try putting a good drum groove underneath and making them lock. Then you can mute the drums when you're done.

This now has a strange structure I'll say more about later as well as the additional synths, though I can already hear you're having some fun with the controllers, especially right at the end of the track.

Evisma replied 17th Feb 2014 - 11 years ago
Did some finagling to the MIDI and other parts, including adding the outro, sax is a bit better.

"Strange structure"

This is more the kind of structure I would like to have with my stuff. A few parts that repeat and maybe are re-visited, but a lot of separate parts that have an interesting kind of bass line and a uniquely textured lead, not a lot of keeping with the same feel for a while and doing the "Milking" you have become a true master of. You are good at it, it just makes me doze sometimes.

Thanks again for the feedback, and forgive my late response. The smoking cessation had me not wanting to do anything I enjoy, so I haven't touched the bass in over a week.

Take care

My computer freaks out with .dll files. I downloaded it from you, and the site, but I hit brick walls. I'm being told that the publisher is associated with spyware and malware. I appreciate the offer, but it's not worth messing things up and losing a $400 DAW I only have one copy of. It all seems legitimate, but it's acting screwy. Thanks anyway, I appreciate it!!!

Wayo!

Good recommendation from Danke regarding DVS Sax free VST software.

"Where, might I ask, can I acquire this DVS Sax free VST software? "

You Google it, as I did, and find the download. Yes, I hear some freeware can have bugs (but not viruses, as such) and cause problems for your DAW. But sometimes you've just gotta live life on the edge, like a daring all-action hero, and install that freeware VST. You only live once and all that.

Anyway, your latest meagre offering to the Looper gods:

Sax sounds pretty decent, actually. And what it's playing is good.

Bass is good the way it joins in gradually. The drums kick in well though the mix is a bit unclear and things are fighting. It's a big sound, especially for only three instruments.

If you don't know them already, please check out one of my absolute favourite bands ever - Morphine. Just baritone sax, 2-string slide bass guitar, drums and vocals and some of the most interesting and unique-sounding music ever made. Danke's a big fan of theirs. I'd love to do the slide bass thing, slide obsessive that I am.

Morphine "Buena"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNEYKrFJgRo

Moving into metal as a change is good before the sax returns.

You know I love mad, long music (and making it even more so) but this is OK at this length as it's so busy. Maybe another minute and it would be long enough. How a piece feels is, of course, not just about the length in minutes and seconds.

Is the title a reference to different food blenders or implements that will masticate your food so you don't have to bother chewing?

You lazy bastard...

Evisma replied 1st Feb 2014 - 12 years ago
I found the sax vst. It was a "dll" file, and my computer won't deal with them. It said to find a program online to read the file, but every place I went to get the reader(several), when I went to download the reader program, my K9 Blue-Coat Web Security threw red flags saying it was malicious spyware and malware. In short, I'll use the sax I presently possess.

I will check out Morphine after your description. Sounds interesting.

The title.

I have had extensive dental work done and racked up $6,800 over a two month span. It was a fun two months. Periodontal disease makes the gums recede and exposes areas without enamel. Interesting, isn't it. Anyway, I only have 19 real teeth. The front is all still there, but I have a total of 3 molars. I have partials that replace the fallen heroes. I had a crown explode into pieces on me the other day and it had to be pulled, so I'm a bit loopy, and this track was heavily influenced by those events,... and Hydrocodone.

Not bad at all man. I think the sax sounds pretty cool. Really makes the song. Imo i would loosin up on the compression. Let the guitar an sax soak thru. Maybe raise the eq around 1-8k hz to brighten it up. But thats just me. Ha. Other than that i like it. Sweet beat.

Where, might I ask, can I acquire this DVS Sax free VST software? I recently bought a MIDI controller and would love some free VST's from the web, but don't know who is legitimate and who's gonna give me viruses.

I appreciate the kind words. I started this at 8:00 pm last night and did the drums this morning. I've only been writing it, not mixing or automating, so the track's overall sound is a bit messy and muddled through my stereo speakers. No monitors yet, so I use headphones when recording and then three different stereos to get an idea of what mixing needs to be done.

Thank you kind sir. Enjoy your weekend!

Thank you Behnam, but it's not a very impressive sight to see. A Dutch-Irish guy with a Van Dyke sitting, usually slightly hunched, in the smokey back room of his house with a bass guitar in the lap at the ready, the computer mouse in one hand, and a smoldering bowl of mid-grade in the other.

Word up, bass crusader. I had a 5 min look at the Akai MAX25. I have had something quite similar for about 5 years, though I don't use it much. It's the Novation Remote SL 37. Tiny little drum pads do technically work but are so small - you can only really play them with fingers. So, not much better than a keyboard, really.

I do the great bulk of my stuff (aside from actual instrument playing) just with the mouse. Have always wanted to get into controllers but never got on that well with them though controllering filtering etc with a rotary control (being a knob twidler) is good fun. But I still tend to just draw it in as I'm good at that. But different people get on with different things.

You'll probably tell me you have no keyboard at all. Yes, you should definitely get one and an all-round controller such as the one you mentioned (there are loads of similar ones, I can't keep track of them all, don't even try). You say you're no good on keyboard. Neither am I (especially two-handed) but I can sometimes knock out some pretty cool stuff, which I then loop up. I can even play some half-decent solos, from time to time. But I don't know how much synth-based stuff you want to do. I do a lot but quality drums are probably a more important thing for you to get.

You really misunderstand EZ and Superior Drummer (and similar products). You have to have the actual proprietary host program to play their content ie the drum sounds that they have recorded and named and assigned to each separate part of the kit and MIDI-mapped etc etc. You can't just buy the expansion packs. You're probably getting confused with something such as REX files, which is an audio file format which can be played in various programs. EZ Drummer kits will only play in...EZ Drummer.Go to the websites of companies such as Toontrack or BFD or look for a music tech article titled something like "Which drum software?" Or read reviews in Sound On Sound for, say, EZ, Superior and BFD. That will tell you a lot as they generally discuss what your other options are when reviewing each product.

I wasn't offering you actual drum audio content (ie the sounds), only MIDI files. MIDI files will play in anything with MIDI - even the Quicktime player plays MIDI files.

I may have occasionally lost a whole comment when posting. I also tend to copy it to the clipboard first, just in case. Sometimes I even compose it in a separate document file.

P.S. I have never seen an episode of Jeopardy! (not sure if it's even broadcast in UK) but I have seen it played briefly many times in American movies. Rewatched Groundhog Day (great existential, Zen comedy) this Xmas and Bill Murray's watching it in one scene, getting all the answers right because he's seen the same show so many times.

Evisma replied 13th Jan 2014 - 12 years ago
The Akai MAX25 looks like it would do everything I would need now and in the future. The pads are of better quality(though small) so I could do whole verses of drums that are different and more with the linear feel of the song. I would do more Virtual Instruments if I could just summon the instrument, and have it automatically playable with the keys.

REX or RMX is what I was thinking. That's how LoopLoft sent me a demo bundle. They were transformed tracks. Not sure if "transformed" means the same in your DAW as it does in mine. In Studio One, transformed means it's a MIDI file with an audio file as one. I can write a MIDI part, then transform it to audio, edit it like audio, then turn it back to MIDI with the new adjustments kept.

Do you know of/recommend any software that has usable MIDI kits for use with controllers?

I know that you don't exist to answer my every ignorant question. "No" or "Ask someone else" works just fine. I'm always going on Sweetwater's site and checking descriptions and reviews, Amazon as well. It always gives me lots of information, but not about integration into DAWs or if it has software that communicates with the DAW. Most just tout their 5,000 samples, not saying if you can control the thousands in your DAW.

I'm just trying to grow as a composer(if you can call it that) and things being easier and more natural to musically convey ideas has to help me in the long run.

Thanks again for your time. You surprised my with actually going and looking at the controller I was talking about.

OK so where are we now with this one... liking the mix now, subtleness. I can hear (imagine) dissonant oboes in this track, wah pedal guitar attacks and so much more, I love the Key of FMinor. If I have some time I may play around with this to give you an idea of what I mean.
Steve
Evisma
Evisma replied 12th Jan 2014 - 12 years ago
I can do the oboes, but not the wah guitar. The wah on my bass pedal is optimized for bass, and sounds like dookie when you put a guitar through it. Send away with the ideas, love to hear them. I've got the ear fatigue from listening to this while adding the electric 6 string. Takes twice as long as it should with a Squier Strat's awful inability to stay in tune, and another twice as long since it's left handed. It would sound much better if I had a righty.

Steve, I've been meaning to pick your brain about a MIDI controller, since you seem to know your stuff and may have an answer for me.

I'm looking to get a Akai MAX25, and wanted to know if it would be able to control the Virtual Instruments I use in StudioOne. I know you are not an expert in all fields, but thought you may know if, generally, these MIDI controlling keyboards can control my drums with the MPC pads and synths and strings with the keys. Is that the main function of these controllers and I'm just worried? I'm sure you don't know about my particular DAW, but if they generally work universally. I'd hate to pay 350 bucks and just be able to use the stuff that came on it. Basically, I'm looking for a piece of hardware that I can physically play the drums with pads that are easily assignable, and keys for every other V.I., all with great integration into my DAW. That's why the cheaper stuff got vetoed. Am I being too picky, or am I looking at the wrong kind of product?

It would be awesome if you would let me know of any ideas you have on this topic, or if it's not something you know off hand. Asking you because I hear quality from what you are using and it seems to have a lot of controlability.

Thanks again for the listen and feedback.

Evan
