Hi Eric
I have this evening listened to your fantastic 80's creation and would absolutely love to collaborate (vocals) with you. I have taken the liberty of downloading the track and added a rough vocal but feel it would be much easier to work on it without your vocals being pre-laid. (They are awesome but it's very difficult for me to find my timings to match yours, if that makes any sense?) Do you have a copy of the track WITHOUT vocals and if so, how can I get it (I don't wish to leave my email address on here)?
Regards
Aiden (soundcloud.com/epm3)
Hi, Aiden. Just listened to one of your tracks on Soundcloud. I think you'd be great on the track. I will PM you with my coordinates and set up providing you with the track without vocals.
This is really cool. I feel like you nailed that retro feeling with the melodies, the synths you used, as well as the way vocals are sang with the effects on top of them too.
This is merely a preference, but if you want to make it more refined, I would add just a tad of sidechain compression to make the kick drum pop out some more. Awesome work!
Thanks, Sheen. In theory, I know how to do side chain compression, but for some reason I'm a bit hesitant to add it to my projects. I think it's just because I don't have enough practice doing it to feel comfortable setting it up. But, I like your suggestion, so I'm going to try it on a copy of the project. Typically, I think, you'd apply compression to say a bass or synth track that competes with the BD track, right? Not to all the tracks except the BD? I will need to listen to the project to see what makes sense. I was taught that I could set up a BD track with just the hits that are meant to "duck" other tracks via side chain compression, but don't route that BD track to any output, so it doesn't actually sound in the mix. Not sure if that will be necessary. Good suggestion. I' going to give it a try.
this track is really really cool! like the eighties feeling in it! and your voice is not so bad! nice result! hope you will find people for your collab!
will have a look soon for the final version!
great work :)
This is really good.
So you used technology to hide the realit of your voice.
It worked a treat.
I use technology to help with every moment of a production with no shame!
You are quite right, Silverman. No shame in using the tools we have available to us. Still, I'd love to find some decent vocalists. I've got tracks that need English singers (or Welsh!), German, French, and Spanish. I have a great love for traditional Scottish music, but haven't written anything like that at all. But, am a big fan of Paolo Nutini and he's a Scot. Does that count?
your voice's gotta retro feeling on the good way and the whole song's groovy is frenetic...yeah, Bowie and those electro/pop groups from the 80's and it's more than exeptable :-)
Thanks very much, Danke. I've just remastered the track and updated it on Looperman. A bit louder now. Am debating what decade I should revisit next. :)
Hello Eric,
Wow mate this is great track
It sailed me back to the land where I wish to be Mate.
Really grateful for that moment mate.
Absolutely fantastic track mate.
Big well done to you.

Thanks, Jamid. I appreciate the encouragement! :) If only I could actually sing! I've got loads of processing, autotune, and two different vocoders going to camouflage the vocals!
Ha ha nice work here my friend, I think it sounds like a cross between super mario and I think someone mentioned Devo? Anyway if that was what you were aiming for you nailed it! I love the 80's, Where I did most of my growing up! I have a massive collection on my ipod, the 80s was really diverse with everything from 2tone to new wave/ nu romantics and indie 80s hair metal and later on rave and dance culture! Love them all!!!!
Thanks, Paul. Definitely some Devo in there I think. Not so sure about Super Mario! :) Was kind of fun to create this track, testing out different "characters" for the vocals. I can't sing worth a damn, unlike you. But, I keep thinking that there must be some character voice that will be passable. I've been playing around with combining a vocoder track doubled with a heavily processed straight vocal track, plus auto-tune to mitigate the worst instances of my inability to keep any note on pitch. Still trying to find the magic combination. Would be better I think to just find some good vocalists to collab with. :).
Thanks, Larry. Sorry for the very very late response to your comment. I've been not so good about getting back into Looperman, I'm afraid. Life tends to get in the way. :)
I usually avoid older tracks on users' profiles, but I just had to leave my thoughts on this one.
This is a brilliant masterpiece. It's so expressive with so much emotion all the way through. And as the track continues to evolve it never loses its touch, with each section never feeling out of place. I disagree with @ sqrtofneg1 when he mentioned the trumpet sounds out of place. It gives of a feeling of confidence which I mention later.
I love how it transitions from this beautiful orchestral piece to the drum and guitar part (which feels intense and yet somehow calm at the same time. I almost can’t put it into words), then goes on to this electronic feeling break.
As I listen through the song, it becomes extremely easy to conjure up vivid images and stories in my head. It’s the mark of a great listening experience.
I think you’ve achieved what you’ve set out to do in capturing the blooming stage of a relationship, then seeing it decline in part 2. The first part gives off an air of mystery, curiosity, and shyness, and when the trumpets come in, it sounds like the person has become more confident to approach. Then the harps come in and it feels like the start of something beautiful. I can imagine two happy faces smiling in each other’s wake.
Then in part two, the mix of beauty from the guitar and intensity from the drums feels like two people who care about each other (or maybe once did) start to fall apart. I could go on forever so I think I’ll stop here Haha
The perfect mixing is only a bonus. I can only imagine the amount of time you spent on this track. I really wish that someday the third part will come to light, even though it has been a long time since you uploaded this. It feels like a story has been left unfinished.
There are some really good tracks here on Looperman, but in my opinion, this one tops it all. I really hope you continue to make music like this.
Thank-you for listening and for your very kind comments, Sheensheep! I'm glad you liked the track. I feel badly that I haven't finished it. I suspect I could could find a suitable singer (for hire) on Soundbetter, but I just haven't got the lyrics right yet. And I'm reluctant to pay out good $ to complete a song that really isn't as good as I think it could be. Interestingly, I really haven't attempted anything like this since. It was entirely dependent on those wonderful acapellas from Jacques Demers. I have several other tracks of varying genres in development, but nothing ready for exposure here on Looperman. All require vocals and the lyrics just aren't flowing for me. But, I keep on trying. :)
Thanks for the comment, Jamieh. I apologize for not responding sooner. Just discovered that I had a bunch of comments that I'd missed somehow. Definitely interested in trying a collab some time.
Very '80s! A great boppy little tune, enjoyed by me on a rainy Sunday morning. I do think you need a better vocalist - you still sound better than me, but this needs some real '80s flavor and pizzazz in the vocals that only a real pro could pull off. The vocals will be key. I think once you have that, you'll know what else needs to be done, if anything. You're well on your way to a really top-notch song.
Thanks for the comment, CitizenMofo. I'm sorry I didn't respond to your comment much earlier. Didn't mean to be rude. I didn't realize I had these comments on the trackI
I wholeheartedly agree with you that I need a better vocalist. I keep searching, but seems to be very hard to find anybody that is willing to work with me. But, I live in hope. :)
Will need to check that out, Steve. I really appreciate all the leads you give me. Very sorry that I didn't respond sooner. We DO need to reconnect and grab a coffee sometime soon, as you suggested. So nice to have a fellow Looperman members here in Ottawa.
Man, this is pretty cool! I was swinging the whole song, I was immediatly in love with the first VST that kicked in at 0:12 and the vocals (including reverb!) fit very well with the 80's style and overall feel!
When the melody in 2:17 started I was like, wow! That's amazing. I, personally, think it is a shame that it wasn't incorporated in other parts of the song.
If you are going to continue working on this style/song, might I suggest that you look into the free magical8bit VST? (site: http://ymck.net/en/download/magical8bitplug/index.html) It is ideal for 8bit sounds if you experiment with it. I think it would fit perfectly with the style you are trying to achieve!
Thanks for the positive and detailed comment on this track, Allochtune. It is really helpful to get detailed comments, particularly where improvements or alternative approaches are suggested. I will definitely check out the VST you suggested. I wasn't aware of it. Your comment on the melody at 2:17 was interesting to me. I might just revisit it with your suggestion in mind. '
Hey Eric. Yes I would need the stems with no effects as I would add in my own. But I could also use the ones with effects. if you wish to send me all the stems I would love to remix the whole track, that would be fun indeed. In Acid I had to either render the isolated track, or just right click on the track properties to save the stem. Not sure about logic.
Steve
Thanks for the props Eric, but it´s only a minor in music, my true major is in Marketing. ;-). Great tune Eric, you took the Rik Ocaesek comment to heart as I see. SAW isd easy in hindsight, but I give great credit to them for innovating a unique sound that was not heard at the time of there Zeitgeist. This song you did, is so awesome. eighties sound, but I love your vocals. I would love to enhance the stem, so let me know if you want that, and I think it needs to be a little louder in the mix. but seriously great job.
Steve
Thanks, Steve. I really wasn't sure if this did sound 80's at all. I'm actually a bit surprised at the vocals. Three very different vocal styles in the same song. Not quite sure what to make of that.
Anyway, yes I'd be very interested in having you enhance the stem. I'd like to see what you can do with it.
Should I output it entirely without any effects? And, would you want a stem of the instrument tracks all together (i.e., without the vocal) so you can work on the vocals in context?
There are actually about 5 separate vocal tracks I think, including the "echo" vocals at the end of the verses. I should be able to bounce them all down into one vocal stem, but you might want me to keep them separated if you think that you might be applying different effects to different parts of the vocal.
Let me know how you want the stems. In the meantime, I'll research how to produce stems in Logic Pro. (Have never done it before.)
Thank-you Eighteen. From the response so far, it looks like I'm heading in the right direction on this track. I really must try to write the lyrics for the other two verses. That's going to be the key to getting this one finished. :)
Thanks for the encouragement, square root of minus one! :) (I really need to look that up!) I had to go on Youtube to checkout the bass from Dr. Mario Fever theme. Learning every day here on Looperman! On reflection, I think I could drop 8 bars of the fadeout. I usually only have a total of 8 bars, but for some reason this time I used 12. Will experiment. Easily done. I can just change the automation on the volume and drop it down more quickly.
It's extremely expressive, it captures the emotion of love.
Sounded a lot like the beatles at the beginning, but it morphed into something else later on.
The trumpet part in the first part sounded just a little bit out of place when it first came in.
Fantastic first part.
The second part had some expanding synths around 4:00 that were great.
Also, something like mallet percussion is prevalent throughout the second part, which added a little bit of sparkle.
The third part sounded promising as well.
It would be great if you did finish this project - I would like to hear it in it's entirety.
Thanks, sortofneg1. I'm sorry I didn't respond to your post sooner. I do appreciate your listening and leaving a comment. I agree, the third part does sound promising and it is very frustrating that I haven't been able to finish it off. I have partially completed lyrics. Not great, but getting there. My hoped-for singer didn't pan out. Still looking, but frankly, no sense locking in a signer if I don't have lyrics for them to sing. So, this remains a work in progress. Many other tracks in the same status, I'm afraid. I seem to be getting more picky about what I am willing to share (not satisfied with the quality of my tracks) and, at the same time, finding it harder to finish off anything. Is a bad combination I think. :)
The intro is probably the best throughout all of your pieces too.
The combination of the bass and the piano parts was amazing. They simply sound great together.
2:35 was the highlight for sure, the modulation was great.
The outro organ? sound was excellent as well.
The vocals aren't as bad as you might think. Of course, they can be better, but your voice still managed to capture what I thought was the essence of the piece.
Perhaps you should revisit this piece. It's way better than I think you give it credit.
Well, after reading your comment, I just had to listen to the track again to see what I thought of it after all this time. I think it definitely has promise. Needs lyrics. And a proper singer, but on reflection I think it's worth some more effort on my part. Thanks for the vote of confidence. I think I needed that. :)
I have no idea what "SAW" is referring to in your description or the comments, care to elaborate? I've listened to eighties music pretty obsessively, both pop and underground, but still can not find a reference. It also appears to be one of things things which is "un-googleable," since I keep getting results about band saws. This is a cool work though, so far, and it reminds me a bit of Gary Numan/Tubeway Army stuff. Possibly it is a bit much on the vocal reverb, but that is also a personal preference. I like the synth emulations you've chosen as well. Looking forward to hearing the finished work! Keep at it!
Hi, Spivkurl. I didn't know what SAW was either until a few days ago when Crucethus mentioned it in the forum. I figured it out. It is short for: Stock Aitken Waterman the songwriting/producing team behind Rick Ashley and probably a lot of others.
I do think I should tone down the reverb a bit. Better still, get a decent vocalist do I don't have to disguise things with massive amounts of effects. The vocal track has EQ, compression, ADT vocal doubling, and reverb on it. I recorded probably a minimum of 6 takes for each section of the song and then learned how to comp the vocals in Logic Pro. Didn't have to use autotune this time, which is good because I'm not very proficient with it.
I'm not familiar at all with Tubeway Army. I will check that out immediately.
I like where you are going with this! It's a nice bouncy dance track... SAW is hard but I think you do it! I'm not a producer so I couldn't even attempt it.
Thanks for the encouragement, NE. I have a bad habit of losing interest/patience with tracks before they are properly finished and just moving on to something new. I'll try to stick a bit longer with this one and get it completed. Then, I would like to try my hand at a SAW-type track.
Crucethus (also from Ottawa, so we can meet in person periodically) says they aren't all that difficult to make, but he's actually got a degree in music and is really knowledgeable about this kind of stuff. What's easy for him is going to be much more of a challenge for me, I think. But, I actually like SAW stuff and attempting to replicate tracks is a really good way to learn how stuff works.
At least on this track I managed to come up with a structure that included a verse, bridge, chorus, and outro. Also got a lot more experience comping vocal takes in Logic Pro. That's progress for me!
Thanks for inspiring/challenging me to attempt this. Has been fun so far.

I'm especially fond of the synth that starts around 1:08, and the subtle strings that come in later on.
The melody lines sounded unique to me.
The bass ostinato fit way better than one would think.
Great dynamic contrast as well.
Nice job!

I was not expecting the flute at the beginning as the principal melody line.
I was pleasantly surprised.
The section at 0:53 sounds great. Perhaps a little change in percussion could have emphasized that a bit more.
I like how you play with the panning in the melody line throughout later on - it really adds another layer of expression.
The snap? sound with reverb when all the other instruments dropped out around 2:25 ish was excellent. It added a bit of punch.
Well done!
