I've been wanting to make something in waltz time for ages but can't seem to do it.... But man, it's so good to hear your brand of realism here again. My only complaint is you left me hanging, waiting for The Voice :) hope we're going to get more from you soon?!

Thanks! I like the waltz beat, breaks up the 4/4 or 2/4 timing we all use constantly.

Next one has singing, Big singing actually, lol. There's a hint, fun one on the way!

tom waits meets a bootle of whiskey. i love your vox. i can´t stop laughing about the lyrics. This is a great story you´re telling. the mix is great, i love how you put the guitar and the tone, what kind of guitar and amp you are using ? this phased guitar makes it very special and you mixed it very well. i get a lot of ideas from this tracks. im a huge fan. love from a banana
theHumps
theHumps replied 7th Feb 2023 - 3 years ago
Thanks! The lyrics are fun.

For an amp I am using a Fender Bronco tweed amp, 15 watts, 1 8" speaker. It has a clean channel and a drive channel, no reverb. It makes some nice tones and makes a cheap guitar sound pretty good.

For electric guitar I play a couple cheap ones, Fender Strat Squire and an Epiphone Riviera Custom P 93, an ES styled guitar. Here I used the Strat.

Glad you liked it!

wayne! billy-b business suit! this is the perfect music for us in the u.s. at tax time! it is so cool to hear your electrics laden w the pedals, the piano is a dreamy addition in the opening. i’m way too paranoid to say anything like i’d be humming this as i storm the new congress.
but really those lyrics are just about timeless, we all gotta tithe. beautiful track, my friend!

A breath of fresh air after a week of covid. Can I come for a cruise?! I need to Google what a theremin is, I've never heard of it. I like the sounds you've put together here.

Hey Wayne, really enjoyed this one. The theremin tracks kinda took me by surprise, it was a few seconds before I was sure what I was hearing. But they compliment your usual style/instrumentation very well. A nice, pure counterpart to the hairy electric sound. I'd encourage you to explore this sound further, I think you're on to something. And of course, the lyrics are always good. It was fun to get away to sunny California from the drab and rainy Pacific Northwest for a couple minutes!

Hey Cam!

I bought a Moog Theremini theremin and have been experimenting with it in my music. Fun to play and it gives me some interesting sounds. I also like how it interacts with the guitar, like an organ with one sound and an ocarina almost with the other.

I've never been to California, seems like it would be nice to visit. We are starting our 7 months of nice weather here in florida after 2 hurricanes.

Happy holidays!

Took a folk search in the tracks and first one was this. Not surprisingly, I am in on this piece, the flute is the icing of the cake, we abuse all kind of them. The voice is somewhat fragile, and detained, tho it is there. In the lows it goes whisper-like sometimes, but it adds to the mood to me. It makes it sensitive and emotional. Good work. Maybe needless to say, but such music feels more like home to me than much modern stuff. But I am a mummy, so to each, his own. xD

The search you took was prob set for most recently uploaded so naturally mine was at the top. Also there were no flutes used or abused in the track. The sound you are hearing is a Moog Theremini theremin. The preset I used sounds like a flute, granted, but I never touched the instrument while playing it, unlike a flute. I'm not much of a singer, just do it cuz I can and it adds to my tracks to have singing on them.

Thanks Gothi!

Awesome! Vocals pair nicely with the instrumentation. I think you have elevated the genre a bit! That ending is pure sweetness. And, now for a bit of a critique (If I may)... there are parts where you vocal races ahead of the music. If you were to re-record your vocal and get it in the pocket, you'd have a flawless song! Well done, Wayne.

It's interesting you mentioned the timing of the singing, good feedback.

I actually did that on purpose. I've listened to countless live performances on youtube and watched so many performers do the same thing. Whether it's done on purpose to break up the monotony of singing the song the same way every time or just the breaking up of everything coming in on the beat, it is commonly done. To sing a song and break up the phrasing so that it isn't always perfect and on time is perfectly acceptable. It just makes the ears work a little harder to hear something that is expected but isn't necessarily wrong either. It's just how I chose to sing it and I re sang it twice to get it right, he. Just my interpretation in the moment. But thanks for inquiring about that.

If you listen even closer, every thing is moving in the song, delays and phasers were put on everything but the drums and automated to some extent.

Thanks Mykael! Hope my explanation helped you see into why I did that.

Cheers!

well i hadda go and google whidmey isle — still out of power from the storm, it’s been out for over a century.
you are a natural with that theremin thang! go west, young man!

Whidbey Island is just north of Seattle. I chose that and Portland as landing places to and from the Klondike, sounds reasonable enough to me.

I am going through another tropical storm as I type, windy and rainy now, worse to come today and tomorrow. Hope my temporary roof from the last hurricane holds up.

The theremin is like the harmonica, all the right notes are there, it's just finding them with the right hand then, with about 20 seconds of practice you can hone in on where the good notes are. Over 20 scales to chose from which is handy. Gonna be fun seeing how i can utilize this in my music.

Be safe!

I am very happy with the overall sound and feel of the song. The theremin adds quite a bit of that feeling I think.

The theremini is 650 bucks in Australia! I had better do some of that backlog of invoicing ; )

Oh wow, that's a lot. It was $100 cheaper a year ago, now $400 in America. Totally fun to play, I actually played the notes in the scale I chose. It's versatile in being able to choose the root note and scale and displays the note you are playing, which is very helpful.
