As soon as I heard the intro I thought you know this song! And so it was. Nice cover version that left room for your own style of music. I'm too young to have actively witnessed this time. But you brought her close to me. Good old British Rock! Good work. Greetings Manuela
I was a child when these songs were already hits but I am a big fan of music history and all the bands that got us to where we are today. The Kinks are a pivotal part of the British invasion, great songwriting and producing. Always been a fan.
Hey Wayne, I love this song and you definitely did it justice! The arrangement is tight and snappy, like the Kinks original. Well played with your trademark, stripped-down, in-your-face production style. Also, I'm so happy you're continuing to experiment with theremin. It suited this song really well. Great stuff my man!
This is such a classic! & one I have never really been a huge fan of but always liked the guitar in it. I think your version here sounded real good! tho & you have absolutely done it justice indeed. Your vocals suit the song, so well done! on this. WTG!
Hi Wayne, doubling the bass track and occupying it with two different frequency ranges is a good idea! When we mix recordings with the band, we cut off the frequencies below 500hz on all tracks except the bass track. This also gives the bass more space. Best regards Manuela
A breath of fresh air after a week of covid. Can I come for a cruise?! I need to Google what a theremin is, I've never heard of it. I like the sounds you've put together here.
Hello Wayne, your voice is really great! The song is good too, but I don't find the mix between bass and guitar balanced. I think the bass deserves a little more volume. He goes down a bit, but that's just my private feeling. So a matter of taste. Otherwise great job! Greetings Manuela
I did go back and lower the guitar and theremin down and pushed the bass a little more to the left. I tried something different with the bass on this track, I duplicated the track and eq'ed one with just the hi frequencies and one emphasizing just the lows. I saw Pensado do that at his website. The bass is punchy and bright, played with a pic.
I also had to deal with the drums, bass, vocals and guitar all competing for the same frequency range in the mix which made it sound like mud when I first started mixing. I clipped most of the lows in my vocal track and gave the guitar a little phaser to give it some movement in the higher frequencies. Some vocals now stand out better in the mix now too.
Hey Wayne, really enjoyed this one. The theremin tracks kinda took me by surprise, it was a few seconds before I was sure what I was hearing. But they compliment your usual style/instrumentation very well. A nice, pure counterpart to the hairy electric sound. I'd encourage you to explore this sound further, I think you're on to something. And of course, the lyrics are always good. It was fun to get away to sunny California from the drab and rainy Pacific Northwest for a couple minutes!
I bought a Moog Theremini theremin and have been experimenting with it in my music. Fun to play and it gives me some interesting sounds. I also like how it interacts with the guitar, like an organ with one sound and an ocarina almost with the other.
I've never been to California, seems like it would be nice to visit. We are starting our 7 months of nice weather here in florida after 2 hurricanes.
Took a folk search in the tracks and first one was this. Not surprisingly, I am in on this piece, the flute is the icing of the cake, we abuse all kind of them. The voice is somewhat fragile, and detained, tho it is there. In the lows it goes whisper-like sometimes, but it adds to the mood to me. It makes it sensitive and emotional. Good work. Maybe needless to say, but such music feels more like home to me than much modern stuff. But I am a mummy, so to each, his own. xD
The search you took was prob set for most recently uploaded so naturally mine was at the top. Also there were no flutes used or abused in the track. The sound you are hearing is a Moog Theremini theremin. The preset I used sounds like a flute, granted, but I never touched the instrument while playing it, unlike a flute. I'm not much of a singer, just do it cuz I can and it adds to my tracks to have singing on them.
Awesome! Vocals pair nicely with the instrumentation. I think you have elevated the genre a bit! That ending is pure sweetness. And, now for a bit of a critique (If I may)... there are parts where you vocal races ahead of the music. If you were to re-record your vocal and get it in the pocket, you'd have a flawless song! Well done, Wayne.
It's interesting you mentioned the timing of the singing, good feedback.
I actually did that on purpose. I've listened to countless live performances on youtube and watched so many performers do the same thing. Whether it's done on purpose to break up the monotony of singing the song the same way every time or just the breaking up of everything coming in on the beat, it is commonly done. To sing a song and break up the phrasing so that it isn't always perfect and on time is perfectly acceptable. It just makes the ears work a little harder to hear something that is expected but isn't necessarily wrong either. It's just how I chose to sing it and I re sang it twice to get it right, he. Just my interpretation in the moment. But thanks for inquiring about that.
If you listen even closer, every thing is moving in the song, delays and phasers were put on everything but the drums and automated to some extent.
Thanks Mykael! Hope my explanation helped you see into why I did that.
I remember finding my first gold neckless while i was metal detecting, I was so excited. It was half an ounce of 18 carat gold worth about $1,200. I got the fever then!
Hi Wayne, It's a very compelling melodic well played and most importantly well sung track. Wonderful! To be honest, I've never heard of the theremini. But it sounds incredibly good. Those high notes gliding into each other - fantastic. Also technically a super designed well mixed and mastered song. All attention! Greetings Manuela
Honestly, I had never knew there was a theremini until I saw it on Sweetwater, a musical supply shop online. I thought I would have to pay more for a used theremin but this item was found! Easy to set up and fairly intuitive to play.
well i hadda go and google whidmey isle — still out of power from the storm, it’s been out for over a century.
you are a natural with that theremin thang! go west, young man!
Whidbey Island is just north of Seattle. I chose that and Portland as landing places to and from the Klondike, sounds reasonable enough to me.
I am going through another tropical storm as I type, windy and rainy now, worse to come today and tomorrow. Hope my temporary roof from the last hurricane holds up.
The theremin is like the harmonica, all the right notes are there, it's just finding them with the right hand then, with about 20 seconds of practice you can hone in on where the good notes are. Over 20 scales to chose from which is handy. Gonna be fun seeing how i can utilize this in my music.
Too cool - nice tune, great vocal performance, love the instrumentation
The theremini is 650 bucks in Australia! I had better do some of that backlog of invoicing ; )
Oh wow, that's a lot. It was $100 cheaper a year ago, now $400 in America. Totally fun to play, I actually played the notes in the scale I chose. It's versatile in being able to choose the root note and scale and displays the note you are playing, which is very helpful.

I am very happy with the overall sound and feel of the song. The theremin adds quite a bit of that feeling I think.
