This track sounds very live.
It would be easy to believe
that you recorded this in a
lounge. Of course it's clean
as hell, all the tracks of yours
that I've heard have been studio
quality.

Great track. Faved..

PEACE...

That's super sweet of you to say so, but if I'm playing the Chicago Westside, I'm making sure I'm playing well before JynxZappa, because once you take the stage, that's a hard act to follow ;)

them drums are great mate, so crisp and clear, the volume is perfect, loved the hat before this, now i love it more i have advised others on the double tempo hat it just works for me treating it like a shaker or cabasa. i also forgot to mention first time the cymbal is on point too bro.
the volume of your voice also sounds better in the mix, im not sure whether you tweaked it down, im thinking maybe not, but bringing the drums up has given the vocal so much more balance, truthfully mate i think this sounds great now but as my first comment would really like to here you let go on the guitar everything else stopped. i would pay to watch you, as i would a couple of artists hear, super talent.

BaoBou replied 16th Sep 2022 - 3 years ago
Wow, that's a huge compliment Paul! Much appreciated and I'll let you know when I play Birmingham Arena ;)
Yeah the drums are better this way and indeed I adjusted the vocals; I also added some bongos and some more keys at the end, so it's all in all a richer version.
I like that you want to hear more guitar, but I'm trying not to be "that guy", you know, the guitar guy who plays 64 bars of solo everywhere :D

I do feel the track could be a bit longer, so I'll put it to rest for a bit and see again next week :)

Cheers mate and have an amazing weekend!

Not like I'm an expert or anything but I think Neruda would've heartily approved of a music setting like this. Really fun song you've got here, pretty different than most stuff you hear on LM which is always nice!

If you'd like feedback I only have a couple of suggestions. But please feel free to disregard them if you don't agree! Honestly, the mix is really solid. I'd suggest bringing out the mids somewhat, and maybe adding a high shelf in side mode to give the track a bit more width.

I'd suggest bringing the level of the vocals down a touch. Your voice will continue to stand out well amongst the instruments while allowing you to bring up the volume of the mix. And finally, Paul is right, no need to hide your natural voice. I got the sense in a few places that you were backing off your air support a little bit, especially in the build-up to high notes. Keep the airflow consistent and your core engaged. Keep your foot on the gas as you go higher and it won't let you down.

Really great stuff! These are a few humble suggestions and please feel free to ignore them.

Those are super comments Cam! Thank you man!
- yeah I sort of didn't do anything about the mix, it's all standard; I try to get the music right before worrying about the mix too much as otherwise I get lost and frustrated ;)
You are absolutely right and I'll definitely do that. Thank you!
- the vocals are indeed way too loud, I hadn't heard that on my headphones - there's unfortunately something in my setup that makes me generally put some elements way too loud, so I need to re-evaluate that.
- love the feedback on the singing. I want to take singing lessons (now doing drum lessons) because this is the kind of advice I need. A friend also commented on phrasing, which was an eye opener.
Very much appreciated the helpful comments buddy! Keep em coming and no need to be careful - I have quite enough arrogance to handle a bit of helpful criticism ;)

Cheers,

B.

I'm trying to learn how to make it more studio, but I'm finding out that's also going to cost a couple thousands more in equipment - not to mention invaluable skills ;)
Thanks buddy!

mate this is great for a first draft, im not a musician, i used to play drums but not for a while now, i do a bit of street drumming now and again still, you know neighbours hate drummers :)) so i cant give feedback on the instruments other than the drums really i think they are in the right place they are right in the middle of the mix not to loud and not to quiet if you get my drift you could mix the hat up and double tempo it, i think the guitar is gorgeous love the tone you should give us a bit of a solo of that alone im sure you could get this out to 3 and half mins, the vocal like me we both know we need to work on them but i want to here YOU and not some autotuned fx to ##### ##### that has no resemblance to the artist i know, the lyrics are great, and i would never criticise a singer anyway, i know you'll tighten things up mate but for a first listen i enjoyed a few times tbf, so i could give you an honest opinion, keep up the great work mate, your respected within the community

BaoBou replied 16th Sep 2022 - 3 years ago
Oohh, great idea on double-timing the hats. The drums are definitely on the list of improvement points (with the lyrics and vocals), and that's something I will certainly take into account.
Yeah I'm never going to win the Great British Sing-off or something, but I do feel it's getting a bit better and I'm trying to find a teacher ;)
Thanks a lot Paul for listening and your always helpful comments!

Hi BaoBou, I recently started selling my Mix/Master services on Fiverr and I was wondering if you were interested in at least taking a look. Don't worry about asking me for info. Here the link: https://it.fiverr.com/decay_wav

You have an amazing voice, but it should be improved with an equally amazing mix.

Buongiorno!

This is mostly an amateur forum, and I don't think this is the best way to use the comment section (especially with a copy/paste message) or to advertise your services. Maybe use the forum for that. Best also to look at the rules or advise against spam.

Good luck!

Muito obrigado! This one feels a long time ago, but when I revisited it some time ago, I was still happy to hear it. I was thinking to maybe look at the drums and the mix again (I've learned things) but you know, it's one of those tracks that don't disappoint:)
Thank you so much for listening and going through some of the older stuff, much appreciated!

BaoBou, much respect for the heart you put here. There's nothing more rewarding being a musician, writer, composer, studio engineer etc. laying those ideas down and bringing them to life. Hats off for that aspect alone.

Hahaha I am just like you, I don't like obsessing too long over a track, but then I also know that when I come back to it later the false notes in the vocal, the uneven bits in the drums etc, all those will piss me off, so better to fix it now while I still have the energy ;)
Thanks for listening and commenting, very much appreciated my friend!

BaoBou, how are ya, man?

Listen, this thing is smooth. I'm diggin' it quite a bit. The ba-da bop bops are catchy as hell.

I think, as far as improvements go, you don't really need much. I'm picking up a lot of favoring of the right side. The Rhoads and the Guitar seem to both be panned to the right, leaving the left a little empty. Other than that, everything sounds great by way of mixing.

I may be wrong, but the vocals sound a little off time in a few spots. I'm not a vocalist, so I can't really say for sure.

Overall, this is a hit, man! I have a pretty broad taste in music, and if you had an album full of tracks like this, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Take care, mister.

Hey man, first of all good to see you're back and being creative. You're practically royalty here :)

Loving your compliments as well as the improvement points. Regarding the placement I usually (I'm lazy) have one rhythm guitar + keys to the left, one guitar + keys to the right, lead in the middle; and then I hope it balances out throughout the song ;) But that's just being lazy and I realise I haven't given that much of a look. In a previous song somebody also complained the balance, so that's a good reminder, thank you :)

I've left the vocals fairly organic, meaning indeed not very in sync. I fixed some of the worst bits (believe me, it was actually worse) but didn't spend too much time as I hope to record better vocals when my throat is sort of ok again :)

The final sentence makes my heart sing. That's super dope. Thank you man!

Yo Baobou.
I diddnt need to cover my ears lol.
BaoBou
BaoBou replied 14th Jul 2022 - 4 years ago

Volgens mij is het Chris Hoy die zei "Training never gets easier - you just go faster". Het is het zelfde met muziek: "Creating never gets easier - you just make better tracks"

Hello BaoBou,

This track sounds live as hell.
I think the only thing that was
missing was the ambient sound of
the fans in the background listening
to your set. Bass, Drums and Guitar were
all on point. In fact I especially liked
the Guitar.

Great track. Cheers Mate..

PEACE...

BaoBou replied 14th Jul 2022 - 4 years ago
Haha awesome comment! Well, the funny thing about "fans" is that in a previous version of the vocals, I'd forgotten to turn the fans off - the standing fans keeping the place cool ;)
Great that you enjoy the "live" sound! I'm trying to get it to sound less garage and more pro, but as long as I get the energy across, I'm happy :)

hey BaoBou nice to have you back around, love the vibe you got going, the guitar is standout the bass guitar is deep funk and gives it that bounce.

Yep true. And to be honest, this track and the process made me realise more than ever, that my interest is:
- 60% Creating and Composing
- 30% playing and practicing
- 10% engineering, mixing and mastering

Yet the energy I spend now is the other way around. I don't spend enough time on the music, and the mixing and mastering (which I don't get, I'm not that interested in and which frustrates me) takes too much time.

I'll go back to just rushing tracks out the door as soon as I feel they're fun... and not perfect (I can't ever reach perfection anyway).

Thanks for listening Rockoff!

There is a lot more to learn on production than some people think..don`t sweat it my friend...it just takes time. There are some decent training courses on line at Berklee Institute but like everything they cost a bit. Some of the music magazines are ok too but they tend to be DAW or genre specific. If you can find a good mentor with the knowledge and patience that really helps..I was able to get several friends locally started back in the days when I had better hearing and was actively involved in studio operation...no worries...it will come in time. Happy to help if I can but my music time is really limited lately. Bet you will find some help here on LM...thats what its about.
BaoBou
BaoBou replied 16th May 2022 - 4 years ago
Well, here's the irony. I signed up for a course here in London, and the course asked to submit a song that could be wored on - so I wrote the current song last Sunday.

I think it would be an excellent thing to work with... but now the production course is probably not going to happen :D (facepalm)

So I'm weighing my options. There must be several ones; the teacher I mentioned actually studied at the Berklee you mention, so that's probably a good place to look.
BTW reuploaded an earlier mix. I had made a "cleaner" one yesterday but noticed just now that in fact it sucked (even more), so...

We live and learn :)

Thanks again man!! Much appreciated!

Has a cool retro vibe. I think you have about all the ingredients here,,the main issues are with production: needs to be stepped up in gain and lots of punch added. Good idea to start with compression on the individual tracks that need it (drums..quick release will get them perking...guitar, bass...you can nail the bass with lots of compression & a slow release..insert some soft-knee limiting on the master when you mix down...render a pre-master mix, then set up a new mastering project to finalize & bring a little closer to commercial volume...but don`t do the loudness war thing..it just squashes your instrument peaks...cheers...sounding good. keep it going..have fun
BaoBou
BaoBou replied 15th May 2022 - 4 years ago
Thanks a lot Tumbleweed, some great tips - also some things I'm not sure where to start :D
I usually have some standard compression on the bass set up and some filters on guitar and vocals, but it's clearly not enough. Things to learn then, and that means growth :)
Thanks a lot for your help!!
