If this doesn't win the contest it's fixed...lol, just kidding. great mix, dynamics are awesome. Listening on old Bose 2.2 speakers with a Kenwood 40watt receiver and the bass just cuts through and sounds amazing.

Hey cruce, thanks friend! I'm happy to be amongst the two winners with this one, as I put a bunch of time into it. Helped me show myself that my right ear wasn't permanently damage by holding a cell phone set to speaker to my ear... man that hurt. Sounds like a cool little listening setup you've got there! I do love Bose. Thank you again for your very kind comment!

Hey spiv. Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I've not been online much lateley. This is sounding really nice, not what i'm used to from you. There's some awesome pads and great atmospheres going on here and now here comes the bass. For some reason it reminds me a little of Leftfields "melt" well it did until the guitar came in and now it's taken on a whole new twist. This is very good indeed and so different from what i've ever heard you do before.
Definitely a fav. The production is spot on, the arrangement is superb and the ideas are brilliant.
I'm really enjoying listening to this and i definitely want to hear it again.

Hey FR, thank you for the visit! Apologies for the long wait on the reply. I definitely can't take credit for the ideas, or in truth the arrangement, as ShortBus had all of that taken care of for us. His playing and sound design was excellent, and every part was complimentary. I'm happy that you enjoyed this one, and you might just like the version which Mark Ratcliffe performed on as well. Thanks again!

Hey friend

Shocked I haven't been to this one yet, totally loving track, haven't heard original or the group for that matter, guessing not the type of music I listen too much other then here on the loop, love your vocal in this mate, suits the instrumental excellent, great tone to the voice, this could nearly fit under the rock genre, has that sound to me, anyways can not fault in any way my friend...Fav...Peace n Respect...Mosaic...

Thank you my friend for another kind comment! Ogre(Ohgr) is definitely one of my favorite artists of all time, and his work in Skinny Puppy is amazing. True that it's not your usual listening preference, but I appreciate the time you took to listen and comment. This is definitely one of his more pop songs, which is probably why it suggests rock to you. The guitar sounding parts are all synth though, and it's under industrial as I figured that people looking for industrial music would appreciate this one more than most. I've been trying to find my voice again after a break from that sort of thing, and also after smoking too much... I'll get it back. Thanks again!

Well well!

I gotta say I'm pleasantly surprised Spiv :)

Of the mixes I've listened to so far I think this is definitely in the top 3. My only criticism would be that the kick drum gets a bit lost beneath that heavy bass line.. but otherwise everything else is near on perfect to my ears - especially love the width and clarity you achieved on the strings at the end. Great job!

Hey WKS, thanks much for the comment! Sorry about the late reply as well. I'm happy that you enjoyed listening. I guess as far as the kick goes, the drums/percussion were all in one stem, so I was very limited in adjusting the volume of individual drums. Also, it didn't seem like a type of song that needed a big heavy kick. I think the balance is slightly better in the new version with MWRatridge's vocal and guitar work. Thanks again for the kind reveiw!

Great track...has a floating feel to it but anchored by the bass & beat. Nice use of guitars too. Mixing is superb, great space, good frequency separations, no mud. Also the tack in nicely spaced with interludes. Congrats!

Thanks Timmy for your kind comment! Yeah, ShortBus did a great job composing this track, and it was a pleasure to mix and master it. High quality stems always make a mix more fun to work on. To be amongst the winners made it all worthwhile, plus this gave me something constructive to do when I wake up at five or six AM. Happy that it could help you sleep! I appreciate it man!

I hesitated in listening and reviewing this track cause I know its part of the Mixing competition. I listened to the original but not the others. Not yet anyways.

But I had to give yours a listen cause I know your talents and wanted to hear them on display. And of course they come through loud and clear. The original track (minus the purposeful mistakes) is excellent on its own. So some good material to work with. Love what Im hearing. Atmospheric, cinematic and just enjoyable. Funny, one thing that stuck out was the snare. So crisp and it pops out.

Excellent work Pat! I fav'd :)

Thank you RW for your comment, I'm sorry it's taken so long to reply. I had a lot of fun doing this mix/master, and I'm so happy to be one of the winners! I agree that the original is very good, and the stems were very nice quality, which made the whole thing easier and more enjoyable. You know that cinematic is not my favorite or my specialty, so it's good to get a positive reaction to this. Other's were complaining about the lack of dry stems, especially the percussion... really I didn't feel like any of it was overly effected to begin with. I did try to tame the reverb on the main percussion a bit though. Gates can do wonderful things when manipulating the feel of a percussion line, and I use them almost too much. Glad that it sounds good though. Thanks again!

You did a good job with bass on this project, like the fact the way you editing the levels allows the user to gain control over the high and lows in a sync'd way with my setup. Solid bass here as well as clarity. Thought you did rather well with the ending piece. comes together with a finale when listening to the tracks levels throughout. Nice masters. Thanks for sharing, Peace.

Hey, thank you friend! It was nice to read your feedback on this one. I felt like the bass stem was one of the highest quality of the bunch, and lent itself to almost any sort of mixing style, so I tried to enhance that part. Also, I was trying to enable a building of potency towards the end of the track, and I think it worked okay. I probably won't be updating this one, as I've been working myself to the bone lately patching painting and setting up a new bedroom in the extension, as well as a collab track which hasn't gotten nearly enough of my time. Looking forwarf to listening to your new version!

I think mixing and Mastering is one of the most important element in music making, and one that is mostly overlooked. Its even hard for me to mix and master i must admit. But i gotta say this one was well mixed, there is an element of simplicity to it that make the sound real crispy,Its not overcrowded, everything stands out good.I wouldn't recommend any changes. You did a great job as always.

Spivkurl replied 26th Oct 2014 - 11 years ago
Thank you much benjizo! It means a lot to me when spoken by a real talent such as yourself! It helps that the composition was nicely and creatively done by ShortBus. I just tried to bring out the best of each stem and help them compliment eachother. The most time was spent on getting the timing right, and I know I could've done a bit more of that, but I think it sounds pretty good this way. Didn't want to ruin what he created. Thanks again for the comment!

Hey friend, sorry for the late reply! I'm happy that you enjoyed listening to this one, as it was a fun challenge to mix and master. I guess as far as the bass goes, the biggest contributors to the control were; convert the channel to mono (I did this just by using monophonic plugins), and cut the unused frequencies with parametric EQ (viewing a spectrum analysis, and killing the sub and very high frequencies). Beyond that, I didn't do much to the bass. Also, it helps to accentuate different frequencies in the bass and low drum channels, as they often fight for headroom. Once I spent that much time mixing properly, the master was pretty easy. Thank you very much for the comment!

Thank you kindly! I'm not too in to cinematic usually, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to mix and master this song, as I think it has a lot of good elements. I've watched plenty of movies, so I have an idea of what works good in cinematic, though I don't really like the classification of cinematic as a genre. I think any style of song can be useful in a film, especially if mixed properly. I can't take credit for the composition, that was all ShortBusMusic. Thanks much for stopping by!

hi again, somehow I need to add something as I was progressing working on the SBM samples of the PV song.
Maybe it is only I do not like some 'cinematic'-style sounds...
Yes, definitely do no like them at all... haha!

Hello again! Yes, I too am not the biggest fan of most cinematic music. When watching movies, I often will watch ones which have an unusual style of soundtrack. I like to be able to listen to the movie without watching and still enjoy it. Don't worry about confusion, I thrive on it!

Yo, Spiv.

I've listened to a few mixes of this track and this may well the best. Maybe that's also related to it being the most recent I've heard. Everything sounds wonderful to me. Powerful and loud but everything crisp and clear.

Really shows what a lovely piece of music this is.

3:22 little drum break stood out for me as being particularly cool.

My one "complaint" is that every mix I've heard seems to have a very similar approach. I totally understand as it's about trying to do the best job with the material in hand. But I guess I was hoping someone like you would do something radically different. I guess that's what I would have tried. But maybe it wouldn't have worked and I would have found myself trying and failing to do something different for the sake of it whereas the more obvious thing is probably the best thing here.

Hope that makes sense.

I really can't fault this mix. And you know I always try!
Spivkurl
Spivkurl replied 14th Oct 2014 - 11 years ago
Thank you SN for the great comment! I know that you know what you like, so I appreciate when I can put something up that sounds good to you. I suppose that I've been in a very minimal mood lately, so I focused on bringing out what was special about each stem. Of course, this meant a lot of specific EQ work, as well as some very detailed timing adjustments. I didn't want to make it "my own" so much as just giving my all to make a killer ShortBus song sound as good as I could. Some of the other entries did take a different approach in the effect use, but listening to them it always seemed to really stand out, like it wasn't part of the song. I tried not to approach it as a "remix." Thank you very much for your feedback and continued support!

Somehow, I knew when I hit the play button this was going to be something quite special, and as always Pat, you did not disappoint. There are many of us who aspire to do great things with the mixing and mastering side of things, and then there are a few like you and Malu who set the standard for the rest of us to follow.

There is just so much space on this one....it seems like the stereo field is endless. I also like the way you were able to bring the bass forward and still allow the rest of the instruments to breathe.

You truly are a master at sound design. Epic effort my friend. Thank you for working on this and for contributing such a great track. I hope all is well.

Bear, you are too kind! I'm just so pleased that the effort I put into this did not go unnoticed! I've rarely done this kind of detail work on full length audio files, and I guess it was worth it. I also was using a few new effects in my chains that I hadn't really tried before, and this helped me get to know what they were good for. To be in a class anywhere near Mahloo is just so cool to me, as he obviously knows what he's doing, so thank you for that! Even with the subtle mistakes, your stems were some of the best audio I have worked with when mixing someone else's song, so that helped a lot. Working with your song really helped bring me back to the mono compatibility school of thought, and that is helping me with my own work. I am loving the plugins which have a mono version included, because when I drop those on a track, it's instantly summed to mono and not just centered. Thank you so much for the comment, running the competition, and the T-shirt!

Thank you Joe for the kind comment! I had fun listening to your progression in the mixing and mastering of this song as well. I've been trying to focus on doing the best that I can based on the time I allow myself, and then leaving things just as is, hence no updates to the mix after uploading. I guess in this case that was good enough. Also been working on getting good wide mixes that are mono compatible, and listening to music in the mornings on mono headphones. I modified the headphones I use in the studio with a switch that can easily change from stereo to mono as well. I try to keep in mind that a lot of people still listen in mono on phones and portable speakers etc, so it's good to keep in mind. You also did some great work, and I appreciate you giving good feedback! Thanks again!

Hello fellow winner, hope you are well! Thank you for your kind comment, and I am sorry for taking so long to respond. Had a little less free time lately, but I'm trying to get caught up slowly. I'm really happy that this mix got a good reaction, especially since I tried hard and took quite a while. This really was mix 13-B, so the 13th saved mix project, and the second render of that specific mix. The mastering was quite a bit easier since I took my time mixing well, so only took two renders. I'm learning the benefits of mixing at low volume whether in headphones or monitors, it keeps me listening closely and gives my ears a little break too. Very happy to be recognized along side you and your mix, as I look up to you as an artist. Thank you!
