Hi Spiv. This has a really cool avant garde approach that leaves you guessing at where the track will go next. Really keeps you on your toes. You have a very unique vocal style, it makes the track all the more surreal; which I like. Keep up the creative work, I'm intrigued to hear what you come up with next.

Hey friend, thanks for the supportive words, which were also interesting to read. To be honest I'm intrigued what will be next as well, as there seems to be some sort of precipice approaching. You can fall upwards if reality is upside down. The use of the word "surreal" makes me feel that I have done the right thing placing this in the "psychedelic" genre. Appreciate it! Have a good day!

Nice, loving the bass and synth sequences. I'd love to do a mix of this. Cold? It almost seems warm to me... it's the bass and and the synth sequences like it's almost happy... sounds like a major scale or something... but of course the vocals and the somewhat odd timing of the drums really makes it... wrong... in a good way.

Hey RogueAi, I'm so sorry that it took this long to respond! Have been deep into renovations and spring planting/harvest. I think the warmth is definitely there in the recordings and mix, so I understand what you mean. It's interesting you picked out major scale, as this is actually composed in an arabic mode. It shows through more in the synth duets in the middle. The drum timing was intended to give a "walking with purpose" feel, combined with a stumbling clumsiness... which, I must admit, is a common combination when getting around. If you are still interested in doing a mix, I can try to work in time to make some stems. Shouldn't be a problem. Just contact me by commenting or sending a pm. Thank you much for listening and leaving your words!

Spivkurl, it's been a long time my friend, how are you? Amazing track I can truly appreciate the time and effort spent as a musician putting this track together. From the Zappa-ish vocals to what reminds me of early Kraftwerk musically.
I enjoyed it, fun track.

Hey buddy, thank you for taking the time to listen to this song! Much appreciated! It is taking me a lot more time and effort to create songs lately, you are right. My process is becoming a lot more involved, and I think that the songs are more musically complex as a result. Now I need to work on doing vocal takes without a blood alcohol level! I really should try to listen to more zappa, as it's something I've never been to deep into. I have begun taking Kraftwerk comparisons as a compliment, since they are well liked it seems... I've only recently been getting acquainted with their deeper tracks. Thanks for the kind words! Have a good day!

I like how you mixed your vocals. It doesn't get lost in the production. I don't think the mix is too crowded, but to add on to what crucethus wrote, I would mix this by centering the vocals and panning the rest of the instruments to one side or the other and give the vocals a touch of reverb, to give it a spacious feeling. But, overall, I think this is novelty and a fun song to listen to. I'm not sure what inspired the lyrics, but it has a slight morbid feel to it lol

Spivkurl replied 24th Apr 2016 - 9 years ago
Thank you for listening and leaving your words, it means a lot to me. It's interesting, the reactions to the mix, because the things you mentioned have already been done in this mix... aside from panning "the rest of the instruments," as I basically never pan bass and kick drums, except for temporary effects. I'm pretty happy with how the mix is now. As far as the inspiration for the lyrics, it is mostly a combination of two things... specifically, it is my tendency toward having seizures on a fairly regular basis. Epilepsy and similar disorders were often referred to as "the falling disease" in ancient times. And, more generally, the words refer to failures, both large and small. I found the "I fall down" line to be a good simple representation of admittance of failure. I'm happy that you enjoyed listening. Thank you again!

Well THIS was a fun listen. The drums really disoriented me in a fun way at the start haha. Your vocal is so unique HAHA. Made me listen all the way through. There are a ton of ear treats throughout this entire song. I think the reason its addicting to listen to is the fact that it's so different. Those patches are so cool as well! Has a very happy vibe that I appreciate. At some spots I got an almost tribal feel with those chord progressions towards the 2 minute mark. Great work, Spiv. This is one of my favorite works from you. Keep em' coming!

Hey there, thank you for leaving you comment on this piece! Between the circuit bent modular stuff and the microkorg percussion, it does sound a bit chaotic... they weren't patches which react in the normal way. Fun though. I'm glad you had fun listening! Thanks again!

Hey Salook! It was great to hear from you on this track! I respect both your opinions and you artistry. Most things which I complete to a satisfying level end up on an album for me, so I'm assuming this will be the first one finished for the new album... Might be up to a year or so to finish it though. I do have a special place in my heart for acid, and there are so many new tools to work with now that it becomes even more fun to create. Hope that download ended up working for you. Thank you very much!

Hey buddy, thank you for the listen and comment! Glad you caught the second version! I can admit that many of my episodes on the floor have influenced my songwriting, though nothing quite as specifically related as this. It also applies to general failure in the face of risk, which is something which everyone faces. This one fell into place nicely, and required very little editing, which helps alot. I'm loving the new superscope EC-5 microphone that I grabbed recently... pleasing range. I really appreciate you leaving your words!

Much better my friend. Hey just a thought, when you say down for the second or third time, could you add a delay on that in stereo, that would be cool. I love when you say "I see sound". I love the I fall down @ 3:44 with that filter process. Also another silly idea, what if you got a female vox to say "get your ass up" every time you said I fall down. That could be a fun juxtaposition ehh?

Thanks for taking another listen to this track my friend! While I do dig the style of mixing and composition which you have mention as suggestions, I must admit that I really wanted to try something different regarding spot delays. I have used them a lot lately, and wanted a bit more consistency this time. The back up vocals is a funny idea, but maybe not appropriate for the intentions of this project. The microkorg really came through on vocoder duties this time, and helped me be a bit spontaneous. Again, I enjoyed reading your comment on the update! Thanks!

I am not sure what you had done really but it works well :)
Right now it sounds in a way much more "cleared up"
kind of less raw. In a way i have the feeling that it doesn't sound so much 80's like the last version but that can be just an error with my today perception. Can it be that the vocals sound better and/or more in the foreground now?
I would say you done a good update cause it was a very pleasant listen. And for this updated version you got a fav from my side.

stay tuned

Thanks for taking a listen to the update as well! Bringing the vocals more to the foreground is definitely one of the things I focused on, plus enhancing the vocal effects. I also did some additional automation to improve the transition from section to section. Cleared up the low-mids slightly. Also did some very detailed alignment to improve the phase of everything. After that, some subtle adjustments to the mastering were in order. I'm glad that you found it to be an improvement! Thanks for listening!

Hey there! Sorry it took a while to get this far in the list of comments! Very happy you enjoyed listening, and I hope you took a listen to the updated version as well... it's significantly more pleasing. I really don't know much 90's techno, mostly industrial when it comes to electronic from that era. I have been more influenced by German music and culture of late, so that makes perfect sense. Been having a lovely time in the studio during the moments I get to spend there. Thank you for listening!

Hello Spivkurl
Another very creative track from your hands.
Kind of Punky electro speed wave. Has a lot of 80's feeling for me but only to the good offroad stuff from that time. I really love the speed and the freshness, cause it fits cool to the little melodies inside. Cool lyrics by the way. The synth work is great like always. So much good stuff is going on that i can understand that you had to much things in your head and hadn't no brain power over for walking without falling down :)

I really enjoyed this track and it stays still in my mind and i listen to it 10 minutes ago :) thats a good sign

stay tuned

Thank you Joe for the friendly comment on the early version of the song! I'm really happy with how all the hardware recordings turned out this time, and the vocals on the new microphone as well. Your genre/style interpretation works for me. I love post punk and 80's stuff for the most part! Makes me happy that you liked this one. I'll reply to your other comment next. Thanks again!

Hi again. Over last months by listening to your tracks my perception of an electronic music has definitely changed. It might sound silly but I just have realized this simple fact the moment I played your track a moment ago.

My favorite part of the instrumental is towards the end when the whistle sound appear. I really like the way how you manage to construct the song using very little and apparently unrelated elements. I see cru remark about the 'grande vocal' and am trying to picture how it would sound when performed using 'empty street' or let's say 'vintage guitar' kind of reverb. The synth riffs and little wiggly melodies are very sweet!

Hey friend! Thank you for listening to this track, and for listening to the new version over on soundcloud! I'm really happy to have had some influence on the electronic side of your music listening and creation. It really doesn't get much better than that! I'm quite fond of the section you mentioned with the the rhythm taken mostly by the zoom RT-123 (with the whistle and stuff). This part alone made it almost irresistible to do an "extended dance mix" sort of thing, but I have refrained so far. As far as the vocal effects go... I have never been interested in very heavy use of reverb, on vocals or anything else really. I find that most reverbs can easily shift the perception to a more ambient or cinematic soundscape. The vocal sound I go for usually is more akin to early post punk recordings, in the vein of Joy Division or early Cure. There was a dryness in many of those vocal recordings which I think suits me, and my range is very similar to Ian Curtis... though I'm sure he would have expanded in range had he not died so young. I have rarely composed in an arabic mode before, but I think it lends itself to the intricacies of the synth interplay, as well as the more microtonal vocal parts. I always appreciate your ideas. Hope to be able to contact you soon!

Hope you are well Pat, sounds like things are going on. Take care of yourself.

I agree with Cru but you already have that issue in mind to take care of it. It is a very cool track man.

I fall down too, ha! Too many concussions gave me balance issues and I don't feel my feet due to a nerve condition. It makes life interesting, that's for sure.

Ha ha... I've had several strangers, friends and family all tell me I need help recently. I've been there, and done that... been there don't want to go back. I just need to protect myself from the brain degeneration which seems to be afflicting everyone. If I remember my lessons learned, then I'll be as safe as anyone.

Hope that like the new version of this track. None of the performances were changed, only a slight stripping down and some remixing/mastering. Some people seem to think the vocals have a dull sheen... I think this is probably due to two things: I was in a lower register than I have been recently, and it was intentional... and this is the first time I've used a new microphone I got, it's an old EC-5 superscope. I actually really like the sound of it! Sounds like you have a similar condition to me. I have had more head injuries than I can remember, all the way back to three years old. I'm sorry you don't feel your feet, that sucks. I have more trouble with visual memory on a normal day, but those seizures are not fun. Thank you for taking a listen! Have a great day!

Great track! The lyrics are pretty great.
On the first part of the song, it sounds similar to "Scribble" by Puppet and EDEN Project, but then when the first part of the lyrics came in, the tune somewhat resembles me of "Clock" by Coldplay but then it kinda got unique :3
Anyways, nice track. I can't feedback since I really don't know what all of the instruments or hardwares of what you have used works. I'm just gonna say it's super awesome!
Keep being awesome..

Hey friend, thank you for your listen and comment! I hope you take a few minutes to hear the updated mix/master, as I think it is better overall. I don't think I remember hearing "Scribble before, and I can't say I know any Coldplay songs off hand. They're popular though, so I take it as a compliment. As for the hardware parts, I'm most proud of the modular patch, which was quite simple, but incorporated my VC3T circuit bent talking teacher module... haven't gotten it to sound quite that cool before! The vocoder part from the microkorg also turned out pretty nice, and is showcased a bit better on the new mix. Thank you for your support!

So I listened with my wife. And I and she felt the mix is crowded. I wanted to hear your voice in a more grande effect. There needs to be more compression and stereo reverb on that exquisite vox that separates it from the electronic muck. It's a really good tune, but it needs a better mix IMHOP.
That's my honest take and I would hope you would want nothing less my friend.

You and your wife are entirely correct, and I kind of realized it before uploading. It's been such a strange few days that I just could not wait any longer. and I'm sure one day I'll be making this sort of stuff!
I can hear plenty of creativity and inventiveness has been put into this but that's the fact we are already well acustomed to ! And your specific vocal delivery once again provides that a bit 'off the wall' mood which lifts the psychedelia on a new exciting level ! I see the existing technology you deal with serves you very well, but that's another story and I'm not so much of a techy type to dig deeper into it ! No matter what, this is another excellent work and I'll be downloading and faving it for sure !:)

Hello my friend Orlando! Thank you for taking a listen to this one! It turns out that it wasn't quite up to standards, and I've updated the mp3 as of today. Took a little work to improve it, but it was worth it. I'm happy that you enjoyed the vocal delivery, as it seemed to flow better than usual. We are never alone! That could be interpreted in a few ways too. Worse now with all the social media available at our fingertips. Love intelligent music that makes you think. Hey man, thank you for taking a listen and leaving your words! Honestly, the "You are never alone" line is mostly a complaint... with just a hint of positive affirmation. Living in a decent sized city, I feel that it is very hard to escape from all the BS which is present in modern life. Very happy that your builds have been going well! You mentioned my "pics," and I can't help but wonder which ones you mean. As far as I know, the only actual "lab" pic on the wearerecords.com site is from about 10-12 years ago! Everything else is pretty much studio pics more recently. My actual electronic/design lab is pretty much shut down until I get the new room finished, which should be only a couple weeks. (which is what I've been saying for a couple of months!!) When my lab is consolidated, it's a mess of various lengths of wire, parts, salvaged gear, and vintage toys. I'll be sure to post new pictures when I get it all sorted... I'm on the fine sanding of the hardwood floor now, and will be testing the iron oxide stain later this week. Thanks again!

Hey buddy! Hope all is well with you! It's nice of you to say that... I wonder if I'm getting better, or if I'm just getting more capable (which is often little to do with proficiency). It's hard to tell. I've actually never listened to a whole Daft Punk album, and couldn't name one of their songs to save my life. Seemed like they were popular in the late nineties... around that time, I had no TV, no computer, no radio, no phone... just a wife, a turntable and a slum to live in. So it's all kind of non-existent from that era. Since then I've tried to listen, but it never worked out. Maybe I should try again? You listen to tapes?! That's awesome! I've been digging out my old tapes and collecting more recently. I just love the experience and the tone. Thank you so much for always checking out my stuff!
