Ugh. This is so beautiful. I was sifting through my old loops and came across this gem again. Your voice is so haunting and soothing at the same time. Beautiful work. This suits your voice perfect.

on MHYST Come Into My Life STK Remix by NateJMusic
I dont know why but the sub seemed to be non-existent for me. I was expecting a bit more punch on the low-end. Regardless, this is seriously an awesome remix. Kudos to you for your awesome mixing and production chops!

on KSE - Arms of sorrow COVER Ruff mix by Mahloo13
As to your guitar recording technique, do you mic them or use an emulator like - say, the Mesa CabClone, for instance? Do you use different amps for each side or the same? How do you EQ them, generally speaking, for the song as a whole?

Brado
Mahloo13
Mahloo13 replied 8th Sep 2016 - 9 years ago
I prefer to mic them but if not then it's no problem I'll just reamp them in the DAW. I use Line 6 software and Amplitube with RedWirez Cabinet Impulses quite often but most of the time I just receive great files to start with.

For EQ it really depends on the genre, in this particular style of music I tend to do a lot of really narrow cuts at problematic frequencies like 4kHz, 5kHz, 700Hz etc. and shape the overall tone. I also might use de-essers on guitars to get rid of any harsh frequencies and multiband compressors to tame the low mids.

In general a bit of EQ does a lot to the sound.

If they sound good to begin with and I don't need to fix anything, I'll probably add some 8kHz to brighten them up and make them a bit more fizzy I guess.

on KSE - Arms of sorrow COVER Ruff mix by Mahloo13
Are those guitars double-tracked? or do you use a stereo enhancer of some sort? I have so many questions, I have no idea where to start haha.
Mahloo13
Mahloo13 replied 7th Sep 2016 - 9 years ago
Yes they are, meaning there was one guitar recorded for the left and one for the right.

I've never used stereo enhancers on this type of guitars. You can get them as wide as you want by proper balance.

If the guitars are properly edited they will sound amazing.

Your vocal processing is flawless! I've been trying to achieve that electric guitar sound and balance you've nailed here and have yet to do it - it's always out of reach and I'm not knowledgeable enough to figure out why. I hope you'll be able to release a tutorial soon so I can see what your process is for getting this awesome sound! Great work as always!

Mahloo13 replied 7th Sep 2016 - 9 years ago
The answer to the guitar balance is...it should be lower in volume than you think :)

As for the vocal, as I've said....just Reverb, Stereo delay, and tape delay (slap delay)

on crazy by MrThaChicken
Well this is fun MrThaChicken. Those drums really, really do an amazing job alongside the synthline. I'm legitimately impressed by the mixing. The vocals are a little quiet though, seem to be fighting with the instrumental. Besides that, this is a high-quality track and has a lot of energy. Kudos to you for this!

Dang, the guitar is so crunchy!! I love it. Just a fun track to jam to. You need to get Pete or some other rockin' voice to sing on this gem. Agreed with danke, 4:07 is a little off-time, but an easy fix :) GREAT job with this one!

Thanks, Brado. I would love to get an actual Vocalist to sing on my track(s). I have been trying to get better myself and I have made some progress but I will never be known for my singing. :)
Oddly the drums are off at 4:07on the render but not on the Master. I am going to render it again and see if it is fixed. Thanks for the kind words of support.

Impressive! Do you plan on adding any vocals to this? It's quite good, and a solid singer could take it up from great to even greater! Whether you decide to or not, it's a solid song and very, very impressive. Cheers,

Thanks a lot! It does encourage me.

*gniffles* Does my own voice, run through FL's vocodex counts? lol..

That does sound kind of cliche but with the proper use will work out as a nice extra touch. I've already done those part actually.

I just started producing for fun and love for music so i'll keep it at solo producing for now. Adding good vocals is again a whole other lvl for me.

What are you using for software? The beat is catchy and I'm going to assume you're using automated appregiators - impressive mixing of them for your first track. The song itself is a little hard-pressed in the limiter though I can't say this is a bad thing for this genre. You have a bright future ahead of you if this is your first-ever track. Kudos to you!

Brado
Wobbin
Wobbin replied 25th Aug 2016 - 9 years ago
Thank you for your reply and kind words!! No automatic appregiators here. Only things i've used 'ready to go' in the entire track is 3 different drum loops, adjusted with extra claps/hihat/kick etc. So I could focus on all the rest which is more important to me then creating my own drum lines at this moment.

I've been working on the track (and so on this part has again changed for the better) day after day and it should be finished towards Monday. Then gets a hand at mixing and mastering from a professional who looks how I attempted those 2 proccesses and makes it all smoothened out. Then it will be uploaded again.

Just to give an idea, this short piece took me well over 70 hours since its not just producing i'm learning but understanding the software takes up a lot of time. The creation of this was easier then how to create the sound/effect etc of my imagination actually inside the software.

I use FL 10.0 or 10.2 or something.

on Im on my grind by wordybum
The reason you feel the drums are sucking away from the vocals is because the snare and kick are centered while the vocal seems to be shifting around the stereo space and combating for frequency space (see below paragraph). You may want to have a mono vocal center-panned and have the effects on another track and blend the two until you get the effect you're looking for. A slight more compression may help as well, with a faster attack. This will let the vocal remain more balanced between syllables and reduce the percieved effect that the drums are overpowering the voice.

The track itself is solid. You may want to try scooping the instrumental (using equalization) down by maybe 1dB near 3-4kHz and boost that same frequency by 1dB in your vocal track so that your voice cuts through the spectrum more effectively.

Your voice is always such a breath of fresh air. What did you use to record the guitar? Was that a dual setup or did you use reverb to create that wideness?

Brado
austinmusic
austinmusic replied 26th Aug 2016 - 9 years ago
Thank you so much! It was a dual set up. I don't recall what mic we used for the guitar but we just set up two mics in the middle of the studio and played through it.

on Alladat - Demo 1 by ChaseMercata
Your vocal needs more compression, and it is too loud when backed against the song. It's close to being good though, just have to focus on making that vocal fit better via compression, a quieter vocal and maybe some EQ to cut off the low-end in your vocal. Keep at it!

Can you send me the vocal with the music? Two stems: 1 vocal track without effects, and 1 instrumental track. I could try explaining to you the basics but every song is unique. I can try my hand at mixing the vocal and making it at the forefront and then explain what I did to make it so, should you like the sound I achieve. :)

on Xyilent - Nonsense by XyIlent
Cool intro. The vocals sound quite modern. I'm not sure what your intention was for the vocal - if you intended it to blend, then you mixed it in absolutely perfect. The words are almost covered up by the music but still add a really nice, crisp element that the track needs. As Tumbleweed said, I think a little more moving on the bassline would help spice up this piece, though the song is pretty darn catchy as it stands. Kudos to you and your friend for this one, this is definitely a solid track.

Brado
XyIlent
XyIlent replied 15th Aug 2016 - 9 years ago
No didnt really intend it to blend, how do i get the vocals more prominent in the track? I know you work with vocals alot so your probably the dude to ask hahaha so any suggestions? dont work with vocals a whole lot kinda suck at it. I just use my knowledge of mixing synths and stuff and it doesnt really translate to working with vocals i dont think.

cheers for the feedback Brando :)

You remind me so much of some of the most popular singers nowadays. You have a knack for bringing out the emotions in words, which is really difficult for just about every singer out there today. Keep doing what you're doing, you'll get noticed eventually with a voice like this.

Thank you Brado! My songs are my diary, so it's hard for me not to feel the emotions when I'm singing them, so I'm glad it's translating.

on The Land Of Ill Gotten Gains by Evisma
Howdy Evisma. I appreciate the kind comments, I do try my best to be an alright fella though I fail sometimes :)

Most people that have complained about EZ and Superior that I've come across really don't know how to use it after they've created their grooves. For instance, my newest song, "One and Only" is using Superior Drummer 2.0, as well as my other song as "Angel in Disguise." With proper (and minimal) compression and stereo widening, the drum kits sound quite realistic and natural - to the point that a professional drummer and close family friend that has been playing drums for various large venues across the U.S. was having a very difficult time deciding whether they were actual drums or simple MIDI grooves (they were the latter, though I've managed to get him to play using Superior Drummer as the VST for his electronic kit on my next album that I just started working on).

I hate to sound like an ad but I haven't come across better drum sampling than these the Superior line, particularly for the price. You're getting recordings from multi-million dollar studios across the world and having them delivered to you in a sub 1000$ package - which is already a steal in my books. Keep in mind that you may want at least 8GB RAM (16GB recommended imo) to be able to run your DAW smoothly as it consumes quite a lot of resources, should you decide to get it.

TLDR - Superior Drummer 2.0 is amazing if you know how to treat it. It's worth the money, despite some of the negative reviews you may have seen. I have tested it thoroughly and was quite, quite happy with the results.

All the best,

Brado

I really like how you balanced that lead at :45 against everything. It's subtle and yet doesn't get consumed by the 8-bit-style synth rhythm accompanying it. You'd be an awesome composer for video games in my opinion. Your music is different and yet very appealing. Great job.
