on Shimmer - Contest Demo by InitiumMusic
Hi,

I wish you all the best with this. Reminds me of something Peter Gabriel/Kate Bush would perform. Melodic liquid is a fave of mine, and I really like the soulful, trance quality of your piece. Great work.

Yeah, love Peter Gabriel. Melodic liquid is my favorite style too. Well, it was the style that got me a career lol.

I do hope I find someone, basically as long as it takes. I could find the hit vocal tomorrow, or months down the line. I have other projects I'm working on in the meantime, so I'm not too impatient :-P

Thanks so much for the compliment!

on Make Ya Mind by Okeezy3Times
Hi,

First I want to commend you for having the courage to sing.

I really enjoyed this and the melody you've created for the vocals. Now all you need is to tighten up the lyrics to the song. I'm guessing you're still working on that part, and that's why the vocals are so low (if I'm wrong, I apologize for the error). It's fine. It's part of the song creation process, however I caution you on uploading songs anywhere without a copyright. Also, is the title "Make you Mine?" because that's what I heard instead of "mind"

In closing, there's a lot of treble in your composition but that may be due to the mix. I'm marking this as a fave.

Keep it up, you're onto something. I wish you all the best.

Hey Austin!

Great song, poignant lyrics, and your voice sounds in fine form even with a cold. You've upped your production skill level, and your music really compliments your vocals.

It's really good to hear from you and to see how well you're progressing. Of course I'm marking this as a fave. My best to you, and please stay safe also.

Hi,

I remember this song. The late great Ralph Stanley has a version up on YouTube. Great job on the vocals, as you really captured the spirit of American folk singing.

Americana music is still alive and well. Keep doing what you're doing. Marking this as a fave, and I wish you all the best.

Hi,

I think you did a good job on the lyrics and the lead melody. I do like that you took chances (the jazzy stylings in certain sections, specifically at 1:34-1:36 lyric "I'm really happy that you found me").

I agree with both Danke and iamarty. I personally love the tone of your voice, and since it takes courage to put your work out for public critique, I think as time goes on and with more experience you will "hear" when the harmony you've created doesn't quite work with the chords in a song. That being said, singing a pleasing melody over original music takes skill, and writing original lyrics is even harder. I think you've succeeded at both. Please keep at it, because you've got talent.

Hey, man! I’m gonna be real with you, I was literally up that same night writing lyrics until I got done, which was like 3 or 4 in the morning. And it was soo many things that I could of done with this beat, so I had options about what to do with this work of art! I just love that you felt the same way that I felt about 1:34-1:36! Thank you, I just want to show people what I can do with my voice and I think that this website is the best way for me to do so! And I see what you mean by the “more experience” part but once again, thank you so so much for your perspective about the song! I greatly appreciate your feedback :)

Hi,

Thanks for making the separate loops available on this. I downloaded two of them.

As for your question, it all depends on which direction you'd like to go in. Right now its more on the pop-ish side imho, and that's fine (the clap is a bit repetitive, but since you've stated this was a simple hip-hop track that you just made, there's no rush to make a change).

My suggestion would be to take a listen to some of the great trap loops on here and see just how much of an edge many of them can give your original loop. Again, it all depends on you as the creator of your composition. As long as you're satisfied, then keep it as is.

My best to you.

Hi,

I can hear this as music for a film, like the Mission Impossible or the Bond series. Great job incorporating trap with the ethnic Greek instrument.

Because of your ingenuity with this composition, I'm listing this as a favorite.

on Interlude JSTMKY by YourzTruLee
Hi,

I think the production is well done, I really like this. Probably because it reminds me of a different time period, when conscious rap was much more prevalent, and the emphasis was on lyrical content.

If this is the style you were going for, you've succeeded imho.

I wish you all the best.
YourzTruLee

Thanks for the review Wikkid!
For sure more of a conscious approach to hip hop with this artist. Is it just me or does conscious hip hop seem to be making a comeback? The last few years the genre has been really saturated with "mumble" rap, which dont get me wrong, is enjoyable under the right circumstances, but I feel like the general population (at least of hip hop listeners) are now searching for more again, then just a good beat to party to or twerk to. I feel like since the major record labels are being rivaled by independent artists, its given the freedom of content back to the artist as well, which is helping. Instead of being influenced by the labels as to what is relevant, now "influencers" are taking some notoriety back and giving the people a much less controlled product. Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but as JSTMKY says in the song: "These Brands sell kids a persona they can purchase, try to put you in a box, and rob you of you're purpose".
Appreciate you taking the time! Hope everything is well! Bless

Hi Patricia,

This is wonderful! Great lead vocal and great backing harmonies that play to your vocal strengths. It doesn't have to be any longer, because it could be an intro for another song if you were making an EP. But if it is longer, then that's great also. Marking this one as a fave.

on simple lofi hip hop beat by aliciapizza
Hi Alicia,

I really enjoyed this.

It's a very good piece that leans more toward the genre of trap, imho. The opening melody is memorable and catchy. The only thing I'd caution you about is making sure your sub-bass is in the same key as the song, as a few of the notes clash in some parts. I don't know if you're using a synth or a drum machine, but with either one you should have the ability to tune it. You Tube has a number of videos that may be able to assist you with key or note changes with the particular DAW or keyboard workstation you use.

Based on your profile you state you play the guitar, which puts you ahead of the game since you may already be familiar with chord structure. While you can bend the rules in music once you learn them, many have trouble with realizing that random bass notes can't be assigned to just any melody. That is the thing that hampers some up and coming music producers (not saying that applies to you, its something to watch out for).

Investing in a set of good headphones can help, and I also struggle with hearing whether notes clash in the lower register, so its not as if anyone is perfect in this regard.

I wish you all the best, and welcome you to the wonderful world of music production!
aliciapizza
aliciapizza replied 9th May 2019 - 6 years ago
Hello! I appreciate you taking the time to give full advice. I know for the actual notes are not clashing (I used Cmaj7 and Fmaj7 chords for the lead and just a basic C to F for the bass) but it may be the sound effects I used on the lead. It started off as a regular piano and I warped the hell out of it in order to get that quirky tone. I do hear what you're mentioning although. I might try and even out the tones on the lead instrument!

I'm just using Garageband. I'm more used to FL studio is I'm still getting the hang of it. There's probably a way to have those FX without forming too much dissonance between the notes so yeah I'll look it up, thanks!

Hi,

Excellent composition. Don't know what happened with my first post, so I'm reposting this.

I hear a clash of chord notes at about 12 seconds in (in the lower register) but that can be easily fixed. Otherwise this is so wonderfully smooth and jazzy. I agree with Danke on the Sax being the MVP of this piece.

Great job and its good to have you back!

Hi wikkid, it is good to be back. I've been spending a lot of time with my kids because they're going through the struggles of going from childhood to adolescence. So that hasn't left me much time for music. But I just started puttering around a little bit, and this track was the result.

Hi Heath,

Love the relaxing reggae vibe in the beginning and how you worked in vocal snippets due to the absence of lead vocals. That's something I do also until I get the lyrics and melody for the vocals to my liking.

I won't go into what genre this is, because you've got a wonderful fusion of musical styles that make this work. No need to box something so creative in.
I've got your composition on repeated listening and marking it as a fave. My best to you.

on iGDTrap - Get Yo Smoke Remix Prod by LunnchBoxx by LunnchBoxx
Hi,

I checked your profile to see what type of equipment you are working with, so I understand your limitations (sometimes great tunes can be created without modern technology). I'm hearing more trap than Dubstep, though you do have a most excellent section at about 1:10 where the dubstep comes in, and you repeat at 2:44.

The weakest part of this piece imho is the prolonged rapping. Its taking up most of the oxygen and I almost stopped listening because it was so long. But this is your first track, so I'm thinking there will be changes in time to make it stronger. Chopping up the rap will help so that it hits certain parts for emphasis. Welcome to the exciting world of music production! I wish you all the best with this.

Hi,

I think your progress on vocals and the production of your original songs is coming along nicely. At some point when you feel comfortable, cutting loose from all the precision of everything being so finely tuned regarding timing may prove to be quite liberating.

However, that is just my humble opinion.
A big positive is that you have a strong sound/brand that is uniquely your own, something many singers can only hope for. I wish you all the best.

on KDN - Change by KDNMusic
Hi,

I really enjoyed this. The bassline is very infectious. For some reason this reminds me of the Men Without Hats hit "Safety Dance" in a way.

The vocalist/reader has a great tone to her voice. Really liked the music drop out at 3:39, as it gave an ominous gravity to the end of her sentence "this is the sound of the change of the season" then the whip effect when the music came back in.

Great job.

Hi Fedev48,

I really like the dark edginess of this track. The only thing I'm not feeling is the repetitive beat. The drums don't do justice to the ethereal music vibes that take the listener on a journey. Imho there are some decent jazzy trap loops on Looperman that could enhance this piece in certain spots, if you so choose.

I'm faving this, because the music is so haunting that it sticks with the listener. This is really good.

My best to you.
