Hi Manzet, thanks for dropping by and giving this track a review, I'm pleased you like the horn sounds as this pretty much dictates my overall style to be honest lol..
Cheers, Slap...
Loving the freeform style of this track! I create hip-hop tracks but thats only because thats just what I do - I love a bit of funk, and have been playing the piano for over ten years (specialising in funk) and i think that the musicianship demonstrated here is superb! How rigid was the layout of the track? was any of it improvised? either way, I like the fast pace and the way each solo seems to slide effortlessly into each other. Good work!
Hi sherido, the whole track in a way was improvised due to it being an original composition. The track has sections which I suppose makes it rigid, but without structure how would things fit together! The improvising really comes into it's own with the sax and harmonica solos which were first takes. I will at some point drop over to your page and check some of your tunes out.
Cheers, Slap...
Great saxes as always! Alexander plays great too!
Do you play the harmonica in the end? Realy good.
About the song, it could be a bit more tight I think and I dont find the guitar/ bas part very strong in the verses. It could do with a little more attitude.
That's just my first opinion, hope it helps you with the track, but in the end, always trust your own judgement.
Hi Paul, thanks for dropping by and taking the time to review this track. That's my harmonica at the end, I haven't played it for a while so it was full of dust when I blew it lol.. I get your drift about the verse section attitude and I will look it to that for certain as the song gets nearer to it's complete version. I will add a bit of grit to those guitars to beef things up after listening again as I'm writing this. Sometimes it's hard to find a balance between filling the track up too much and leaving the required space for the solo to breathe.
Cheers, Slap...
Wow,Awesome Steve!I love this kinda stuff and you do it so well.
A very clean track and the stereo mix is something special with everything very fluid.Of course you know I love your playing and a big thanks for your huge contribution to our track...I was honored to play a few notes beside you :)
I'm looking forward to more new music from you!
Allen
Hi Allen, firstly thanks for dropping by and lending your trained ears to this song. Being a musician first and a producer second means it's great to get praise for both. I am trying to create a distinctive sound that's instantly recognisable as Saxobones. These tracks are going to be used for a cd release with the focus on producing a catchy and highly polished piece of work. I don't think I have finished this song yet, as the more I listen the more I hear what to change in arrangement and production. I will drop by and review some of your tracks soon, which I know will be graced by your wonderful playing.
Cheers,Slap...
Hey mate...I'm getting the feeling you pulled out the pork pie hat for this one!(Alexander needs one to!) ..I didn't grow up in Blighty so I might be a little presumptuous in my critique here,to me this is a totally British sound (well duh!..lol)..what I mean is the horn phrases and transitions have that 'Ska' factor, the unmistakable punch and delivery only found emanating out from the British Isles..it's got that street and club feel which is a hallmark Brit influence the world over...fantastic tune!..personally I love the Baritone (an instrument I feel you don't pull out enough...I used to love Gerry Mulligan as a kid)....I love the harmonica segment!..here again you keep this baby in your pocket far too often..(Larry Adler is one of my heroes)...it's inclusion to me always has this affect of contemporising the European influences within music and not the Blues which most people associate it with....great to hear your music Steve, every note you play regardless of the instrument always leaves a lasting impression, and one that we learn from..cheers Dave :)
Hi Dave, kind words of support yet again from my Ozzy friend. I'm really enjoying discovering Logic now, it offers a lot of super effects which are easy to manipulate to get the sound you require. I have been a huge Ableton fan / user for a good few years as you know, but the laptop side of the equation has always been the weakest link mainly because of low ram! This Macbook pro is a superb piece of kit!! It works great with Logic and the cpu is never under strain from the plugin usage. I thank you for dropping by and offering your support yet again. I'm off now to find Alexander a suitable pork pie hat lol..
Cheers, Slap...
phenomenal stuff, great job on this one. i had to come a check out some more of your material after hearing you on the collabo with allenv & spelljammer and im definately not disappointed. your a man who knows his instrument very well indeed. RT
I could easily see myself sitting in a bar, sipping on a rye and pepsi, watching and listening, mesmerized as would be all in room, everytime you and your associates were on stage.
...simply superb..crisp production excellent groove and of course superlative horns..hailing from philly originally this is kind of like going home again..soulful and funky..if i can't sit still? then it is working!..cheers, cait*
Man, i cant stop listening to this. The sax in this song is haunting. From the opening sequence the listener is left hanging on every note. Ive relieved pain, sorrow, joy, the whole spectrum of emotions by listening to this. Sublime! God I love music, especially at the apex of greatness like this.
Jesus, this literally brought tears to my eyes! I just have no words! None! Dusthill at his finest as always! SlapJohnston, pouring every fibre of his soul into that Sax! The crescendo's incorporated into youre playing style is mind blowing! And those high notes! DAMN!I simply have no words to describe how good this collab is. None.
Nah this is world class bud. Beautiful. Cant believe I only bumped into you're work today. The emotion you invest in you're playing is stunning! The way you work you're way through scales is mind blowing. Definitely one of new fav artists on Looperman!
Sounds like a cross between funked out 12 bar blues and the Bottom theme song! I'd speed the whole thing up if It were my track. But of course, it's not! : )
Nice to hear some live instrumentation on here, you and your son have some some skills!
real nice to hear you in a live jazz setting, sublime performance, the man knows how to blow the horn, real cool jam, the sax is on fire and you are the master. Great performance from all involved. Hope your doing good and that your son is well. Peace.
Hi BP, thanks for dropping by and giving this track a listen. Alexander (my son) is blowing on this one, his solo is after the bass and drum break. Nice to hear from you and I hope all is well with you..
Cheers Slap...
Man I love this stuff Slapjohnson, the harmony horns are fan freakin' tastic, great solo also.Wah on bass and guitar nice. You have a lot of good funky air between things where it's meant to be.Love it!
Yeah!...I'm a sucker for any Bossa..who wouldn't be..it's the music of Love..well shagging anyway! lol..the day I get sick of this type of groove is the day to cash in me chips......Probably one of most authoritative sax lines I've heard in ages..it's cool,it's lively..but it's a ball buster and means business.....Ed the keyboard player is in the slot big time...you own this tune guys!..superb! cheers Dave
One of my favourites,So What!..such a smooth groove and rich sound guys...Saxophone tone records so well(your tone that is the Bone tone!)..it just mainlines into the digital interface...it freaks me out to think of the sound that a top recording engineer could do with you..back to the track..I love to home in on the players your using..today it's the drummer Luke..being a bass player,I can understand how intrinsic his job is..to the average listener he may appear to be just cruising a long..but there's a huge amount of nuance and control going on....it's insane that these tunes are first take wonders...fellas your going to get mighty popular on the club circuit if your not careful!...cheers Dave...ps, props to John W..for changing to a Fender Jazz! ;)
