real smooth Bou, love the guitar opening, well written vocal and a nice delivery too. it sometimes just works like that mate, i use to plan things and get frustrated not getting the results, something then clicks and i go in another totally different dimension and get a surprising result.
now i just put some music anything really, open my daw blank and get creative from nothing. good job as always playing and singing
Thank you Paul!
I made the opposite journey from yours - I used to simply open a blank Ableton and grab a guitar, but more and more I try to create a structure, start with sort of a goal in mind. It doesn't always work but often I feel it helps to challenge me.
I guess it always helps to do the opposite of whatever you do naturally ;)
Thanks for listening and commenting Paul!
Thank you my friend!
I also wrote it before I went to sleep and the vocals were recorded very low volume with loads of background noise because of this :)
It's great we can use this technology to record our ideas, change them at a keystroke and capture our musical thoughts at any given moment. It's a great tool for the creative music maker.
As far as songwriting, I can come up with more than 10 song ideas in as many minutes with changes and lyrics. Im not bragging but literally, song ideas just pop up in my head once I put that guitar in my hands and I get to work. Freaky in a way but kinda cool how the creative part of the brain works.
Thank you so much Wayne!
Yes creativity is a weird thing. I'm not sure I can create 10 ideas in 10 min, but I've now found a reasonable flow that allows me to go a bit more in depth on tracks but doesn't block me trying to get it "perfect" (that's as good as I can make it, which is extremely far from perfection).
BTW the track that frustrated me last week is the track I uploaded today... so all's well that ends well ;)
love everything about this one. the structure is reminiscent of music I don't really hear getting made much anymore. however it feels so original. I'm also a sucker for the type of lyrics your singing, to me -its perfect poetry. great job.
Ahh the mysteries of creativity, I have learned a long time ago, that sometimes when it doesn't work, another approach with no criteria or design unlocks the creative mind. I always liked Brian Eno's Oblique strategies can also unglue a stuck muse. Cards that will say write a song with the color blue in mind, can really make you reach deep into your creative mind without added pressure of results. So nice tune my friend.
Cool, I'd never heard of those but I'll look into it! I am a huge fan myself of John Cleese's book & video on creativity. Not there's a specific strategy I wouldn't do, but just to remind me that the frustration we feel is shared even by the greatest creative geniuses.
I did watch some of Blake's vids. Quite an earful, production was varied and different on each of the tracks I listened to. I can see why you find his music interesting, at least.
I once wrote a song called Black Clouds Complaining. It was about storm clouds being described as having human traits and comparing the thunder and such like people complaining. I made the musical arrangement on the drums not normal meaning I had 2 chorus's in a row, the change 2 or 3 times n a row... as an exercise to make a sensible song out of the weird drum arrangement. Song came out good, my production and mixing were shite at the time.
"Look outside, it's raining, the black clouds, complaining"
Nice song, I love the chord structures. As I love Bowie and Ferry even more, this reminds me of a Japan tune https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEdX0veLihM
I agree with Manuela, the synths get pushed back too far.
I would love to hear how this one evolves. I just ordered a cheap Stratocaster knockoff from Japan to get my guitar chops back in line. Will go from there.
Steven
That's a great shout. Japan was a good band (might still be).
Thanks for the tip Steven!! I'll follow up... maybe this weekend if I can get my 2 other tracks and several side projects up and running :D
love that intro Bou, great track well written great vocal too you sound like your enjoying yourself lots here, great 80's vibe James Blake eh, great artist but this reminds me of roxy music, heaven seventeen bowie that era its sounds so authentic mate like others have said drums guitar synth and the vocal tone and range a fantastic era of music to right i was bopping my head and shufflin my feet great job
So will you reveal the artist you are trying to emulate? To me I hear some Bowie in it but there is too many electronic tidbits. Bryan Ferry will be my guess then.
Big reverb on the vox. All the instruments sound fine, well placed, well mixed. I like songs that reference clouds in their lyrics, so many ways to express feelings, emotions, actions with cloud descriptions.
We have so limited genre options as real music makers here, there's not enough genres crossed with rock. But dance?!?! lol just kidding!
The artist is James Blake. I had never heard of the man but he's absolutely amazing and has a wide variety of music. Bowie and Ferry are great comparisons I think.
I'm also sure that everyone who knows James Blake will now go "what? no, this is nothing like him" and that's fair enough, but if you don't know him, give him a listen.
I like that you liked the clouds. They sort of were an afterthought to the lyrics and then they somehow became the theme, which... sometimes that's how it goes, you know :)
Hahaha ok ok it's not dance. So what is it?
Dance huh? Alright!
That main sound with guitar in beginning what instrument was that? Hey I like this you know something's good when your head is nodding! Very 80s which is my favorite era of all music!
Good work man everything sounds great you sound good
Thanks a lot buddy!
Yeah ok maybe not dance, but it's actually a 123 BPM track, so... ;)
There's loads of layered synths in the beginning before the guitar, is that what you meant? Thanks for listening!!
Hey Bao, not a genre I do much even though I have done one or two over the years, think I have one still up on profile, great vibe to the overall sound of the track, you on vocals? cant say I could pick up anything that is out of place, been out of music action for many years, enjoyable listen my friend fav'd Peace n much Respect mosaic...
Hey Baobou.
Dus als zij zeggen "that's life", dan zeggen wij "what a mess" ;)
In dit geval zeg ik... ayto einai h zoi. Zo gaat het nou eenmaal met sommige tracks ;)
Hi there Baobou, been too long since I've listened to one of your creations. Great upbeat tune, you slipped some pretty nice harmonies in there in a couple of places. Solid guitars and keys too, though no surprise there. All the best from Down Under.
Thank you so much! I't a track that frustrates me and it might even go to hidden for a while until I find time to fix it... but still thanks, the nice words help :)
BaoBou. So my current situation……. I’m listening as I’m on my way to kick it with my mom who is 91 and lives 2 hours away and she’s sharp as a tack. Something about your track and driving through the countryside is making my day! I’m really digging this because it’s uniquely you. Plus at the risk of sounding redundant, I still cannot unhear Donald Fagan! Nothing technical is interfering with what you have shared musically. Great job Buddy:). Also I’ve got the .als project files and will be jumping on them soon. Peace.
Thank you so much!!
Great to hear your mom is ok, especially at that age. My mom is 81, so I feel you (brain is still fast, her legs not so much anymore ;)
Donald Fagen is a great name to be compared to. I'm happy :)
