I really like this song, it's absolutely lovely!!! the music & lyrics are a match made in heaven. I have to say one of your best! indeed TOP! Work here B, you outdone yourself on this *GEM* Kudos! Faved!
Paul Simon!! Yes that's absolutely it and that's also an amazing compliment because that's probably one of the most amazing poets of the previous century.
Setup: well, I moved from a cramped apartment with no real space (via some (mis)adventures) to a place where I can have a study - which is also my man cave and has the space to really set up all my instruments in a more or less permanent setting, so I can start drumming, playing guitar or keys, or singing at just about any time (barring company time of course) ;)
It's amazing and liberating and just about perfect!
Well I definitely don't accuse you I know you do this is your comfort zone 70 style lol kinda like how I met my ex wife your story line. She was the sparkle in my eye. Music is the key to my heart now. Great song man you go that 70s
Well done. Often, the ones that are done on the spur of the moment turn out to be really good. And hey, if you like to create "70s music", crack on and keep doing it. There will always be difference of opinion no matter what you produce. Keep going.
Well you have succeeded in
creating your own "Brand", I'm
pretty sure I could recognize a
track you made, anywhere.
There is a certain kind of spontaneity
to your work that sounds like you're in
a studio and you're only going to do one
take, so it's gotta be good. I usually don't
listen to lyrics but, you seem to catch me and
make me listen on every track.
nice to see someone out here sharing the love, big up, also a kick in the behind. in the kitchen (literally) with this waaavy song. interesting sounds, will give a listen with headsphones
I like having lyrics that are not fully specific where pretty much evryone probably recognises a bit of the feeling, even if you haven't been in the exact situation. I hope that applies here too, my new track is a bit more specific... but I think it's still a feeling people can recognise :)
nice work mate really groovy, nice song and mix, great guitar too bou. nice bass and drums, everything sits ok with me just the volume levels, mixing and mastering tweaks. im looking forward to see what Mark does with it, the engineers are the people that perform magic. your an all rounder mate singing playing and producing is more important to you, as you say you don't really concentrate on that side and you have become a great friend, keep sharing your art
It's crisp man. Like I can hear the separation in between the tracks. The vocals are on a dead center throne & their isn't a missing bass drum anywhere. Technically, it's a fantastic mix. That's Ableton live for ya. Beautiful job man. Kudos.
BaoBou The first note caught my attention right away. May I ask what are you using in your mastering chain/mix buss? The song has plenty of excitement. The arrangement is rock solid. What I noticed is that the overall mix needs a touch of compression. If I get some time, I would like to download and run it through some mix buss ideas. Your passion and drive is admirable, big time. I enjoyed what you've done here. Keep up the great and creative flow.
I usually don't concentrate very much on the mixing mastering as you know; I try to come to some balance where the vocals can be heard well and no individual instrument pops out unless they have the lead.
Then what I did was (all this in Ableton Live):
- the drums right now are midi (I used to have a practice room with actual real live drums but unfortunately I moved away so I don't have that right now). I use a drum buss for that; I played around a bit with teh settings to give it a bit of punch, but not too much, plus a bit of reverb on the kick and delay on the hats.
- a high pass filter on the bass and guitar (obviously more low on the bass)
- I also tried to shape the mids a bit to give space for the vocals, but as Manuela indicated, not enough
- then the keys again I think a low pass filter
- I added a "sustain" return for the keys
- for the vocals I went lazy and used Ozone Nectar
- finally for the master I used iZotope 10, both this and Nectar with the automatic functions. I find it's generally not worse than what I would do and I find mastering extremely tedious and frustrating :D
Yeah, I'll send you the stems, no worries! I'm in the middle of a house move, so hopefully somewhere next week, is that ok?
Nice work on the track BaoBou, really has a nice groove and feel...Granted that I'm listening to this at 5:00am and haven't had my morning java...the vocals sounds on point to me...I like that the backing vocal is not lining up exactly with the main vocal...gives it a different feel. Love the guitar work too.
Hey BaoBou, Wow! This is a really nice track, love the arrangement and musicianship. Your vocals and the storytelling is really engaging. I enjoyed this track very much, great job!
BaoBou. The opening hit me with solemn and reflective contemplation. The piano chords and phrasing told as much of the story as you did with the vocals. Really a nice arrangement. Heartfelt and honest. A respectful work my friend. I will definitely check you out on ITunes. Peace.
That's awesome Mark! Here's a page with some links to streaming platforms (it's actually available on 25 but these are some of the more common): https://baobousmusic.hearnow.com/step-by-step
Thanks a lot for the listen and the gentle feedback. The next one will be more funky again ;)
Lovely track despite some of the sadder lyrics! The vocals are cool, I like the tone and timbre of his voice. The git lead was cool, nice tone! Totally enjoyed this!
Thanks Wayne! To clarify, the vocals are mine, as is the rest - it's just not based on something that happened to me.
The guitar tone is nice, yes - this is a temp setup but I actually like how it turned out.
Dit is inderdaad een heel mooi nummer.
De tekst raakt zeker wel en ik denk dat velen hem voelen want bijna iedereen heeft wel iets meegemaakt op dat gebied.
Muziek is ook heel mooi.
Heel goed gedaan baobou!!
Going to sound a little weird wasn't to me at the moment but I was just in my thoughts and I accidentally hit play as I was scrolling not knowing who or what song this was and I was like this is so relaxing I was trying to find a word that I press play and I see oh okay no wonder excellent work my friend keep forgetting about you and your voice I really like this so relaxing
Thanks so much buddy, I guess that's sort of the best way, if you don't know what you're listening to and suddenly you sit up and think "hey, I like this!"
Thanks buddy!!
This is a very wholesome & heartfelt track. The lyrics & music fit hand in glove, nice arrangement of the song also.
I like that near the ending you took your vocal tone up a notch which simply added to the intensity of emotion felt throughout the song. All in All nice work on this indeed! & I agree we can be touched by something not necessarily that we ourselves are going through but empathy allows us to identify or understand what others are going through. Life is the greatest teacher & everyone has a story to be written about. Kudos!
Thank you so much Angelus, that means a lot to me! The words are straight from the heart, and I hope that comes across - I get emotional listening to the song myself :D

The quicker and simpler the song comes together, the better the song, that's what I find happens.
What did you do with the new setup?

I always try to write lyrics in such a way that many people will recognise something... I guess that worked here :)
Thanks for listening and commenting!!

This one when I started with the drum beat, I could already hear the chords and when I played the chords I already started singing.
If only creating was always this easy... :D
