WOW, when I make loops I don't really ever think beyond the short term (though there is some rough idea). And I think you did a really good job capturing that vague blueprint that was in my head when I made those bass loops. Kinda like, dark atmospheric tribal abstract, ya know? Kinda dig how ya warp this with the smooth alien synth pad-lead stuff. As if to ask, what would a rusty swingset sound like in space?
And I agree with some of the comments (skimmed over em) this could be used in a few ways. I think this would make for an excellent score for the intro to something like an anime or sci-fi horror film. A good name for the movie, hmm- Screams of the Deep? With bold white text over a dark screen that would dissolve off in a liquidy fashion. Too bad I can't D/L this (sad face). Oh well, I can still favorite it. Thanks for sharing mate. Later on!
Every time I hear this track, and hear the way it continues to evolve, it grows ever more mezmerizing. I love the title. I can almost visualize this clash of spiritual entities and natural forces. Like some god like battle between the forces of nature and human kind. Very surrealistic, and hypnotic amongst all the chaos. Just listening to the style, I can see we work along the same lines of creativity. Keep doing this stuff. The world needs this kind of sound exploration!
Thanks for faving it! This is the ultimate form of compliment to me. The bonobo for me is very metaphorical and thought provoking as it appears we're closer cousins than with the common chimp. The cultural difference between these two groups is truly profound, and like the Dutch anthropologist I wish we'd discovered the bonobo first. The image of a bonobo shaking a branch at an electrical storm in defiance is what this is all about. Something about simian defiance against gigantic natural forces to me reveals why we're spiritual or religious by nature. I think it's why you and I are creating these kinds of sonic explorations. Mysteries with capital 'M'.
This really stands out when compared to much of the ambient I've heard. The atmosphere really works with the vocals. This track has a subtle intensity about it. Nice one!
Thanks. I've put it as ambient because of what it seems to do emotionally. Thought I might put it up as Hip Hop, but that seems to be pushing the boundaries of generic definition. The vocals are actually transposed about 3 or 4 notes below the original specifically to tease out that intensity and make it feel like it's compelled. I'd really like to make a long version of this one, but it won't work without the vocals, and uncredited (I've been searching for the source everywhere I can think of) they make me a bit nervous.
Funny it's the French Artiste that gets the title! As ethnography grew out of French surrealism, it should be no surprise I'm following in that tradition. C'est musique pour les Monde, n'est pas? I'm glad you enjoyed it!
damn, this is somethin' somethin' else man, extremely interesting how you've distilled this down to...a...dance single!!...man, vinyl, those were the daze.....need to listen to this again as my brain is kinda fried at the moment lol, but I'm already diggin' it dude :)...i'll be back
Flavors are now really only hints, but it is what it is. I'm pleased. The only other Pop Song I've ever made was a total parody of the genre - a kalimba made from a garden rake mounted on the neckless body of a George Washburn acoustic run through an old MIDI reverse sample, with my spouse playing a collection of sticks arranged on the floor in wind-chime nonpatterns. Our friend played subtle electric guitar stroking silent notes and chords with a glass slide and twisting the volume up with his pinkie. His spouse was stroking fingers and fingernails over the skin of a large frame drum. Recorded on analog 4-track, we titled it, "Pop Song."
This track is an exceptional detour for my day. Mechanical and peaceful simultaneously. The inspiration for this must have come from so many directions. Great work!
Thanks Spivkurl. Really, it started as a personal challenge to see if I could approach "commercial flavors" while maintaining the sonic style(s) I'm exploring right now. I'm not sure about how successful the attempt has been, but it's a groovy tune, in which I've learned a lot in the process of creating. Thanks for the listen and review.
Love this track, wonderful percussion. It sort of gripped me if you know what I mean. I could not stop listening to it until it ended. Hypnotic and wonderful yet again!...C69
This one's on my list as one to remaster and get it into the best sonic form I can. I was looking back at reviews on this one, as I listened to it again. The percussion IS amazing in this one, and what it does to the psyche suggests it deserves to be refined and polished. Thanks for the review!
Besides Jungulation Vicar this will be a key track for you. It might be the defining track so employ all your wonderous talent and make it extra very super special!! Maybe more melody here and there, what about a bridge section where you change the beat radically for a few bars? Use all the tricks. You can do it, blow us all away....C69
So much potential - no pressure, you say? I'm currently using this one as a reward, and get to play with it after completing more pressing things. The next version will be markedly different, to be sure, but recognizable as well. I really don't want it to become some sort of stereotypical World Music track - buy my current/style aesthetic probably indicates this won't be an issue. Yeah, time to go play with it some more! Cheers.
Hey n0mad the drones are good but the percussion is great. The variations almost give it a played live feel. Really nice work. I think you may have imbibed too much?
Nonsense, if I'm still standing, it's not too much! The live "feel" is a genuine one, and this was recorded "live" with twisting knobs and sliding effect levels as it was recorded into a wav file. I was definitely jacked into the right vib for this one, and it still is one of my personal favs. Glad you enjoyed it, too!
The melody is fantastic in its movement, appropriately melding into itself again to allude to its chorus. This piece is a monster. It has so much proportion. This is truly inspired work. A pleasure to hear again and again until my ears wear out.
My man in Alberta - Thanks for the listen and encouragement! I've got the extended piece "Jungulation Victor" back up on Live and am going for the 6.5 to 7.5 satisfying version next. Won't wear out the replay button so fast this way! Cheers.
Ha,such an original track and title.
Like the way you evoke a scene or place with your music. At some point,I could feel the breath of hippos behind me!
Great track
Bonjour mon ami (it is still morning here)! My first incarnation as an adult was as a graphic artist, so I suppose there's no escaping the influences of the past. I suppose it's why I naturally try to create soundscapes as opposed to 'traditional' song structures, as well. As I remixed this one last night, I was surprised in watching the spectrogram in my master channel that the sound in this actually moves in waves back and forth across the frequencies. Water agitated by the movement of annoyed hippos! Glad you enjoyed it!
Yeah man! I played it for my 40 year old brother-in-law yesterday, and he said it was "the old Depeche Mode" that he loved. Actually I was trying to indirectly channel (via Siouxsie Sioux and Peter Gabriel) the guy that gave Depeche their break - Fad Gadget - aka Frank Tovey. Insurrectionist subversive Pop all the way! Thanks!
LLLOOOVVVVE that sound - tho I was expecting gnomes, and this doesn't sound like gnomes to me. definitely gnome factory, but the gnomes are gone, and little rifts that lead to the future are ripping open in the factory, and digital worker ghosts have taken over the factory and they are building you a studio, my friend. awesome work, fav'ing. like this a lot.
CalifKen - so glad you dig it! I love the image of "digital worker ghosts" from the future building me a sonic studio. I hadn't considered that it was a factory building garden gnomes at all - isn't that weird? The gnome in the title is from my own metaphorical totem reference scheme - a way of keeping track of "those damn things" that pop up across cultures and vary with every cultural lens. My great-grandmother used to tell me stories about the brownies at her grandmother's home and how they fed it burned porridge. My best friend from Niger told me a similar story and I've got my own ideas about the real non-variable in the quantum model - so there you go. My Gnomes are probably closer to your future digital worker ghosts than the ceramic kind. "Gnomes in the Totem schemata of n0mad23". Thanks for faving it!
Lovely tribal sound on this track! You've really built a nice groove with all this diversity of instrumentation! A very uplifting and peaceful track. Great work!
Ahhh..the Diaspora..well this track does have little tributaries shooting off everywhere..though I'm not sure about their religious predilection.......I think with compositions like this(multi timbrel percussive adventures) you have to be careful about changing horses in mid stream...specifically with this track I hear the didgeridoo as the target phrase and the eastern horn/flute as the chorus element..it's very easy to stand back and orchestrate from a distance(lol)..I'd like to hear a bit more space between the instruments..calls and responses..that sort of feel..sounds coming and going...It's great anyway...just my spin on it..cheers Dave
The call/response thing is crucial - you've called it well. I think you're right about "space," too which I hadn't really considered. Spot on. Someone invoked "maximalism" on one of my other tracks and I think it's an unexamined direction I've been heading. This one needs space and a melodic call and response frame. My next attempt(s). Thanks mate!
What I would put into this for danceability - some sort of high freq drum element, be it a snare, or something, to provide bounce points. Cuz I'm sittin here and I want to bounce to it, but I'm not sure when and where to bounce. Does that make sense?
Yes it does - thanks! I bet some of my African friends will grin, because this one actually has some of that rhythmic sensibility behind it. The secret is to follow one rhythm with your hips, one with your shoulders and arms, and the other with your head. When all else fails, close the blinds, remove all clothing, bite your lip and begin to gyrate. I'm going to give a high end beat a try and see if that makes it a bit more accessible. I was thinking maybe a high hat or maybe clacker sticks. Cheers.
I like this track , it has a great blend of modern & tribal elements , to me sounds really well played & recorded & mixed ,
great title too , nice work :-)
Everywhere BUT the Northwest Provence - but our nightwatch (a master drum maker) was from Bamenda (Platuce). He was part of the talking drum society, so our news was usually at least 3 days ahead of the "official story." He tried to teach me the Younde variant, but it didn't stick. My favorite professor in college, (Bongasu Tanla Kishani) was from there, and the director of Africatamtam in Phoenix, Arizona was from Balikumba. I've been as far north as Lake Tchad and to the ocean (Kiribi). My track "When Hippos sing with Frogs" was inspired by being chased by a herd on the Benue River! The chase ended with being attacked by a swarm of tse-tse flies! But the best part of being in Cameroun as a kid was THE MUSIC. Glad you like this track - it is really rough still, but I think by the time I'm done it'll be one of my best yet. Merci, mon ami.
Thanks RawHead. I love doing the soundscape stuff, and getting that tribal element's really important as I want my stuff to motivate dancing. Sorry about the response time here; somehow I completely overlooked this review. Now to check out your tracks!
Ah it's been awhile since i've heard something like this, and this is even better. Love it. It's got sort of a futuristic twist on the vibe - awesome work man. Plus it's not often that I see so many favs and replays on a track - excellent work friend!! Nice to hear ya.
Thanks for the encouragement and the fave, my southern Leftcoast brother! I was recently told that my music's evolving in 2 simultaneous directions and I think your "futuristic twist on the vibe" validates this. I'm thinking the favs and replays are a good sign, too! I'm thinking I was tuned in to the right vibes when this one channeled through. Cheers.
Great african feel to this one. The meter and those low end frquencies do indeed convey a kind of weighty loping movement and there is definately a hippo snort in there - great stuff.
And it's the one track that's got no African drums on it! Funny how we can invoke location sonically with the right/rite frequencies and rhythmic patterns. I'm glad you can hear the hippo snort, too (which is how I came to title it), as I thought maybe I was the only one. Glad you dig it!
C69 - I could here the sigh of approval from 8 time zones away! I plugged it into my home stereo and am pleased to report it sounds good this way too! Cheers.
This is definately one for the inner-space voyager or psychonaut. I can feel the Entheogen beginning to take effect. Ayahuasca, Delysid, Psilocybin - the choice is yours...
On a SERIOUS note - this track just gets better with listening - great remix.
JFW knows the lingo! Yeah, I guess it's time to explicate the "frog" totem invoked in the "Hippo" piece. A few years ago there was an entheogenic conference up in Whistler, BC and psilocybin was brought up. One of the organizers called on the Hiada and Kwakiutl elders at the conference and asked why the native Pacific Northwesterners didn't use the mushroom as a tool. The response: "Yeah, we've always known about the mushroom. It's just that it's the domain of Frog, and everybody knows that Frog the Trickster is a pathological liar. You can't trust anything from the realm of Frog." Two personal totems are at work here - the Terror invoked by Hippo and the uncertainty emphasized by Frog. Glad you dig it! Hope my little explanation makes it even more enjoyable!
Nice Nomad! (I feel I must Sterilize!...Sterlize!..Sterlize!.. lol, sorry...reference to Captain Kirk) Good Ambient... but with a slight edge. Exotic. Not what I would call mellow but I like ambient tracks with a twist. This is Cinematic in nature and could be used as background track in some sort of space epic. I can imagine it in Battlestar Galatica in some of those scenes with the Cylon Baseships. Dreamy... but with a slightly sinister edge. Really good!
Yeah I can see this as "cinematic" and I can also see a crowd in a darkened club writhing in slow motion behind this one. I think because of my visual nature (even sonically) I've always had a tendency to do stuff that's inherently cinematic, but hopefully I'm blurring the boundaries a bit in the process as well. I'm really glad you liked your listen. Cheers and thanks for the encouragement!
Hi Nomad,
This is a great track and an excellent arrangement. If they ever remake the Daktari tv series ( anyone here, old enough to remember that!) this would make a good new theme for it.
jfw - Ha! I hadn't considered Daktari, but Johnny Quest has come to mind twice (what 3 or 4 years earlier?). Thanks for the review and "hearing" where it should be used!
