This is an awesome tune. I love the brightness and the detuning is excellent. The percussion is also perfectly placed. Fav'd fer sure. Keep it up. You know I look at music in colours as well. Sort of a very mild synesthesia.
Any how carry on my good man.

Your words mean much to me, since I know that you know your way around a synth (or a studio). I'm guessing it's partly the modular brassy tone which gives the impression of brightness and detuning. I would agree. The low note priority based portamento added a good subtle vibrato sort of effect... while the FM (Both F's) and AM added brightness and interest. I can't lay claim to playing all percussion parts myself (some were carefully sequenced with MIDI), but the ride cymbals and tom/kick rolls were spontaneous non midi stuff. I get what you mean about the colors, I think I experience that condition at times. Part of why I like to use certain colors on my DIY gear. Thank you for checking out the track, and leaving your kind words! Have a good day!

Hi, can I use this on a video for my blog? It's an ESL blog and I've made a video to promote it with fast moving text which this music would complement PERFECTLY. I'll link you to anything you want me to from my blog in the acknowledgments section and give you a shout on social media. I'll also put you in the credits at the end of my podcast. Let me know. Thanks.

Hi Pat

Normaly i take music just like music. Nothing more nothing less. But in this case i take it a bit more from the making music side. It must been a pleasure to listen to while you make this kind of music. It all sounds very intressting and it is in a way alife. I bet that much of cool stuff just happend and found a way into this little song and i am a real big friend of makeing music in a way where you get/found some pearls where you never believed to find some. And also i love sounds and stuff that is just there after a record and you didn't know where it comes from ....

To be honest, i pressed play while my wife was around in my studio and she fleed away from this little track. She realy cant handle sounds like that :) but she often flees from things i played to hear :). so if she says - thats to hard for me to listen to, then it is often something that i can realy enjoy.

Cool one. Great preformance on each instrument.

stay tuned

Thank you joe for the friendly expressive comment! You are right, this song did have more of a focus on making the music rather than other things. I think this is partly due to creating it based on inspiration from an image. There were of course other things happening in my life, and they all feel into the piece. I'm used to people running away from my music, or driving off the road, or hell forbid turning it down...! I really enjoyed the process, and into to work a bit more like this. Thank you again!

hi! this is one enjoyable tune with happy vibe and nice melodies. I do not know why but the bassline, trumpet and other leads sound kind of positive while the organ chords have rather 'minor' mood qualities for me. Birds and sea backgrounds were nice too. I liked the tone of the noisy snare drum from the analog drum maschine. The way how you manage all those hardware electronic instruments is always impressive. I enjoyed listening. I liked visual artwork too. Faved! Alex

Spivkurl replied 28th Nov 2015 - 9 years ago
Hello again! Appreciate you being the first to offer some sort of appraisal here on the loop! Your views on the mood are interesting to me, and also most likely spot on. When I began the composition, I was feeling a glow, like I was in a good dream... then the organ part was the last instrument to be created, at a moment when I began to feel disjointed and frantic. Technically, the only trumpet sort of sound is part of the organ setup, and using that "wow" foot control almost gave me a blister on my toe... need to were socks or shoes next time! I find the modular part to sound rather saxophone-like. There is an unusual feeling throughout partly due to the C# phrygian mode which I chose to represent the color green, with subtle suggestions of A dominant bebop (resulting in a moment of honesty)... The note of A represents green in some other schools of thought, and the scales are enharmonic aside from that G which ties them together in the song. The birds are actually a flock of crows which visits our neighborhood around this time of year, and I captured them out the window of my studio last December... there is also a squirrel barking buried deep in there. The "sea" is actually the sound of the wind from the same recording... our city is one of the windiest areas in the country. The snare drums are not technically analog, though I can't say for sure the source of the sounds on the machine. This was far more involved, hardware/physically, compared to most of my synth stuff. Used foot controllers on four of the instruments to do accents in real time, as well as tweaking the string part in filter and delay domains. The artwork was a big influence on the song, and I can be thankful for that. Wonder why it didn't show me the fave on here? Oh well. Hope you are well! Thank you!

on Valley by Spivkurl
Hello again. I can connect myself to this one. I love the rhythmic fluctuations and the sound exploration you're doing here. That Kawasaki synth sounds really powerful - it's a bit like a sampled guitar metal performance getting heavily processed in a real time according to the drum loop timing. It gives the impression of having some great playability. The ending and the beginning are very similar (apart of the actual length) so I like to think of this track as a conceptual symmetry kind of thing (apart of it's apparent chaotic synth jam quality which is cool).
Amazing work!

Spivkurl replied 1st Dec 2015 - 9 years ago
Hi there! Happy that you listened to this one! The instrument used is actually barely an instrument, and this was it's death rattle. It sat on my bench for years as a mass of wires and plastic. I did a few long sampling sessions while I still had it around. These got chopped to death later, and turned into this. Not exactly playable as an instrument, but as samples sets for sure! I don't know when this instrument disappeared, but there it went... The "valley" idea, and the corresponding experimentation around this time regarding "audio sculpture" were based on FL Studio's pattern block setup, which is no longer supported. I would make an image with the pattern blacks, each of which corresponded to a certain arrangement in the pattern. This was a more simple one, but "foodcrow" is a more complex one with a different instrument. Was a fun piece of history. Thanks for listening!

Thank you for leaving your words! I suppose one could call this long, though it is meant as sort of a chanted conjuration more than a pop track. I'm guessing you are more used to higher tempo and standard time signatures, so it may seem to last longer in that way. I'm glad you liked the different basses. Appreciate you stopping by!

Thank you Orlando for your continued support! In the case of this song, it almost feels as if there is no "original" version. It was one of the first time which I allowed someone to release a song with my vocals before I had released a version of it. Both are equally original and complete, and I'm happy I gave the "go ahead" as Promenade's version seems more universally acceptable (though it could be the timing in relation to the holidays and stuff). Hopefully we will work on more songs together in the future. Thank you for your words and the fave!

Thank you much for the kind words! It is very much a strange combination of instruments and influences, but I find that an odd sound represents me far more realistically than something familiar. Happy that you liked the guitar work, as I practised a lot for it... also reconditioned the classical guitar I played it on. Appreciate the comment and the fave!

Hey Pat!

Your version of the song is amazing! I had a chance to listen to it very briefly this morning but the great amount of new elements you introduced was absolutely impressive to me and of course a little overwhelming by that very first listening. You definitely might reached 100 tracks total limit when working on this version! haha

It is hard to comprehend all this considering how much this piece has evolved and how many changes have been created since 'MasterA'. I love all the subtle details you added whithin the frames of composition! There is still a kind of stylistical openness in the terms of space (which I find very cool) but at the same time there is so much happening along the track (I mean the great amount of patterns, ideas pointing very different directions).

Your vocals are cool - the apparent simplicity/repetitivity (regarding to the message and the way it's delivered) is very attractive to me - it's basically a spoken word only but still very melodic and very linear oriented. I am in love with the very raw sound of instruments and raw sound of human voice.

It is impressive how many new elements you introduced here - those are hypnotic, trancy synth layers! Very cool. Also the mix is so pleasant to listen to. Recently I tend turning all the volume knobs up to the extreme on every gain stage which seems to be a good way to detect 'true dynamics' and the 'distortion' on the audio (with the gentle help of the ears haha). Needless to say that most of looperman music can't stand it!

I believe that so called very 'future' of the music (and the future of the humanity in general) can only be driven/progressed somewhere further only that moment when the actual exploring of inner creative possibilities whithin one's human body-mind is happening (I mean if it's happening in that very 'now' continous space). I believe it is a very moment-by-moment kind of 'consciousness' thing only. That's a kind of a general thought of mine haha but I hope you will agree with me at this point.

I really enjoyed listening to your version of the song a lot. Thank you for giving me such a precious inspiration and inviting me to into such a creative crazy trip!

I will try to write more after taking a closer listening to your mix.

Best to you, Alex

Thank you for always being one of the first to comment on my uploads! I don't know if it just the timing (holidays and all) or what, but your version received a far more spectacular response. With that in mind I'm happy that you released it!

There is a large variety of sounds in here, and that is partly thank to your contributions and influences. I'm particularly happy with the spontaneous additions added with my pss-470 keyboard (just got it). The FM sound of it really adds a different touch, and it is so fun to improvise on despite the mini keys (used to those).

This turned out more lyrically repetitive than my intentions, but by the time I realized it I was fond of the arrangement. I'm glad you like the general rawness... I tried to move things more in that direction with this version. That may be part of why this is not well loved.

I think the mix turned out pretty nice considering how many things are going on within. I've been trying to err on the side of quietude and dynamics lately. I'm just getting so fatigued by all the heavily layered brickwalled modern underground. It's hard for me to close my ears, you know what I mean.

I do agree about your "consciousness" comment. I was just speaking about a similar thing with a friend... my actions, not just in music, are often about changing and teaching by using the moment where energy and matter combine. I believe there are some parallels with what you were speaking about. A continuous stream of moments with decidedly and subtly life changing happenings.

I'm happy we were able to create a couple of songs together, and I think that it won't be the last time! Appreciate your words my friend!

BASS FROM SPIV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like warble you've got on it. Automation? Took a second to realize it's a bass guitar. I also like the tremmed vocals. The higher ones are pretty neat. The ending would make a great intro for the next track. Cut this track when the music ends, and make the last bit of vocals be an intro to the next track, which would have to be some hardcore Speed Waltz, naturally.
Spivkurl
Spivkurl replied 29th Oct 2015 - 10 years ago
Hey Evan, thanks for leaving a comment on this! I'm pretty sure there wasn't any automation on the bass, though it was several years ago. I'm thinking it was a combination of a Boss flanger and time stretching which arrived at that sort of tone. The high vocals are me as well, obviously manipulated! The next song on the album was actually fairly high tempo drum and bass, so I guess speed waltz is close (aside from the time signature from what I remember). I'm thinking about getting a new bass soon, but mostly for my wife to play, as she's getting back into it. I'd like to play more as well, I just think I'm far better at guitar (6 or 12 string). Thanks again for the listen!

Hey man, thanks for checking this one out! Definitely one of my best cover tracks. Skinny Puppy is definitely worth giving time to. Alas, this will be the second year in a row that I will miss their Minneapolis show. Last year they stopped plowing the highway, and this year we are just too broke to risk it. I really dig Ohgr's solo stuff though, every album has been excellent. I find that this version resembles some of the live versions of this song. For a synth based rhythm guitar section, I think this turned out pretty good... I'm proud that it wasn't just a guitar rompler. Thanks much for leaving your words!

Spivkurl replied 28th Aug 2015 - 10 years ago
Thank you very much for listening TV! As I've mentioned elsewhere in the comments, I didn't have anything in mind relating to vehicles when creating this song, in fact I could count on one hand the number of times I have actually driven a car. It's more along the lines of someone making a conscious choice to move aside, and allow someone to speed down the highway of life... an idea/action which seems to be becoming part of the past. The "trying to avoid a traffic jam" sample at the end was recorded from a real person in real life, so that makes it comforting to realize that is not a non-existent idea yet. Very happy to hear from you on this track, and to read your words!

Hey Dan, thank you for listening again! I do have a soft spot for intensity of almost any kind... And "advanced" is a nice compliment! I would be disappointed in myself if my music wasn't somewhat advanced after this long. I actually find the composition pretty simple usually, but the supporting technology is advanced, which helps. I can only claim a little bit of credit for that part. It's always good to hear from you! Here's hoping you've uploaded something new!

Cool that it brought you back to the nineties! I actually did not know what jungle was in the nineties.... I was completely out of touch with media of any kind. Hey there madscape, thank you for listening and leaving a nice comment! I do appreciate cleverness of course! I don't know about the reference to "drones," as I don't remember inserting anything like that... I could be wrong. I totally dig the *idea* of Frank Zappa, though I have little experience actually listening to his work... just a bit of time spent on "Mothers Of Invention." Thank you for noticing the time put into this... when I think about the real time put into my recent works, it's a bit overwhelming. For example if you consider what went into modifying the HotKeyz which was the driving force in composing the track - I had that toy on the chopping block for almost ten years! I totally appreciate your kind words!

I'm so out of my depth making any useful contribution here but I always like the challenge of listening to music that isn't in my comfort zone. Hey Richie, it's always good to hear from you! No need to feel pressure to give critique, as honestly I rarely go back and change things after uploading any more. I'm happy with the reactions to this song, as hardcore electronic is not a very common listening preference, and yet most people who normally listen to my track are showing up to the party any way. I was having a hypnotic time in life in many ways, and it shows through in my work recently. That "uh oh" was from a field recording, and I should really find that kid to thank them... It adds a lot to the effect of the track. I appreciate you listening and leaving a comment my friend!
