It's pretty good. I suggest running it through a limiter, though. You've got some clipping in the kicks and the low ends that could easily be taken care of. Other than that, not too bad, man.
Personally, I like it just the way it is. I think it's interesting that if you leave the vocals how they are, you have 80's pre-wave. But, if you ran them through a bitcrusher and reverb, you'd have early 90's industrial. I think, for it's simplicity, (which is a good thing), it's actually a pretty versatile tune. Brilliant work, good Sir.
Thanks for your support! I ran the vocals through a waveshaper, but definitely didn't go to the point of being a bitcrusher. I really appreciate you listening!
Considering my impressionable years were in the 80's, I have a particular soft spot for anything, (musically, speaking), that has a quality 80's sound to it. This track is one of those. I appreciate how unapologetic it is in it's retro-synthpop. Good work, man.
I don't know if you remember back in early 90's or not. CGI was still pretty new. Everyone jumped on board, and they came out with a ton of DVD's which were also just taking off. One in particular was "The Minds Eye" series. This track sounds like the audio to a segment from one of those DVD's. I like it, man. Kinda takes me back a bit.
Slow breathing. Slow deep breaths with a bit of a delay. If you could slide that into this track, it would be fully hypnotic. But, that's just my opinion. That aside, this is a pretty sweet tune. Good work, man.
Hmmm.. not a bad idea, ill see what I can do, and hopefully you are correct. Im glad you give your oppinion, that was my point in sharing a not finished song haha ;)Thanks for your time, listen and comment!
This is a pretty sweet track. But, If you don't mind me suggesting...try to go back and adjust the EQ on your kick and your snare. They need to "pop" more. Also, try to pan them out a little. It will give your track a larger and fuller asthetic.
Those two were on my to change list so I will definitely look at it, will try to do something with the pan. Maybe a new kick will go into the track instead of this one
You've heard the term, "the artist is his own worst critic."? It's true. Even if the flaws are blatantly obvious, never give the viewer or listener a check list of what YOU think is wrong. Otherwise, that's all they will focus on. If you just present your work as is and let them take it for what it is, 9 times out of 10, no one will think otherwise. You know the kicks and bass need work, but Joey Baggadonuts on the street doesn't. He's going to think you meant for it to be that way and still like it.
Now, as for the track. It's great. The arrangement, chord progression, and vocals are awesome. The beat is great, and you seamlessly built around the vocals. But, like you've said, the bass and the kick do need some minor adjustments. But not much at all. The feel of the song along with the emotion of the vocals make it a little dirtier and gritty. Maybe some minor EQ adjustments to accent the high ends for more pop and a bit of a razors edge. (At least that's what I would do). Other than that...I really like it. If I heard it on the radio, I'd not only look into who it was, but tell my friends to check it out as well.
Yes i've heard this before haha and it is definitely true! Very wise words given here... i will not give the listener a checklist in future! I never thought about it, but you're right. When i listen to other tracks and they give a checklist i definitely listen out for those things. And i guess it's the same as when great musicians make mistakes playing live and carry on and work with it, most ears never notice and think it was intentional. Whereas, if they stop playing completely, people will know it was a mistake.
I think half the credit for this track goes to Katie for the amazing vocal. Thank you for the comments and tips. I worry about the low end so much i forget about the tops! I shall go away and brighten up the tops and fix the kicks.
This is good, man. Really good. This is a piece where if played live, you would be able to see that everyone involved was jazzed about playing it. (no pun intended...unless it was a good one, then it was totally intended). It just has a good, clean feel to it that makes you want to say, "Damn, dude...life ain't that bad." I really liked the way you have the vocals panned all the way to one side. It makes it seem like it's sharing the spotlight with the music instead of stepping in front of it. Awesome work!
Hey ValVedriver! Thanks so much for the comment! I really appreciate your taking the time to stop and and listen. Regarding that "panning" remark, I can't claim any brilliance it is simply the result of me not knowing very much about using DAWs; which is the reason I leave it up to those who know, lol.
The mixing in this is done quite well. That's that part I have the most trouble with. To see someone be able to do it so well is, if nothing else, encouraging. As others have said your transitions are seamless. The only thing I personally would have done differently, was to add one more octave in the vocals as they rose. A fourth set would have, not only felt more natural, but it would have helped build anticipation. But, that's only my opinion. You know what you like, and you went with it. Kudos!
This isn't necessarily my taste in music, however I don't let that get in the way of recognizing the talent here. The arrangement is, for a lack of better terms, classy. I like how the beat stumbles into the pillow-y melodies. Definitely a clean and professional sounding mix.
Many thanks for your perspective. I know how hard it can be to listen to stuff that you would not normally do.
I liked your description. It gave me a new insight into how the track sounds to someone else.
