The piano loops is definitely beautiful. Same for the synth pads that fill the space behind it. However, the synth arpeggiator(is that the right term?) that comes in at the :30 mark is in the wrong key! :( Shifting it down half a note will fix this problem. There are some clashing notes, yes, but it's not something that can't be fixed!

Cheers,

I'd have to disagree with crucethus on this one. I actually enjoyed the hesitant feel of the piano. It's different. All too often we hear songs that are so structured. This one is not, and I like that difference. The storm sounds were very relaxing. It's been a rough day for me today and this helped to wind me down. Lovely work for your first track, ama. I look forward to hearing more work. If theres one critique I can offer, I'd look more at playing with the delay on your system and try making it stereo to fill the space. Maybe adding a touch of stereo reverb will help silken up the piano as well. Anyhoo, great job on this. Much better than my first attempt! :)

I like the idea a lot! But in my personal opinion I feel that the wind FX are a little tacky. The vocal solo was pretty awesome though. I liked how it added an extra flavor of epicness to the mix. And the strings are lovely. I think the drums could use a little more variation on velocity; they come across as too midi-fied for me. Great starting point, I look forward to hearing the finished product! If you're willing - when you're done I'd like to try my hand at mixing/mastering this one! I love the song. I really do. Like skwish said, it could definitely be behind some intense game industry for COD or Battlefield!

Lovely job,

Wow, right off the bat you had me grooving. Even if you dont consider yourself the best at this stuff, it's not that bad! Sure there are things that can be fixed - for instance, maybe you could pitch-shift the bass line so that it follows the chord progression - but it really is good! I want to hear more!!

Regards,

This really groovy! I love it. Maybe there could be a little less reverb on the drums, but overall, the construction of the song itself is beautiful. Great work on this one.

That fat bass is too overdriven. It's overpowering everything else and you're starting to lose clarity. Might wanna take another look at it. Cheers!

I like the drums, but the snare feels a little panned to the left. I think centering might help the overall sound. Great stuff. And is that a click track blip I hear at 1:04? :P I like the idea very much though! Lovely work Elena!

The bass is a little harsh on coming in on every note change. Cutting the low end of the kick to around 25-35 Hz might help clear it up. Gotta make space for the bassline haha. Right now it's being overridden by the kick.

I'm relistening to your track and one suggestion: I'd add something like a nice airy pad or strings on the segments following the 1:09 mark, to carry the build up of the drums and fill the space; it would allow the momentum to sink into the listener's mind and be absorbed and provide a nice satisfactory "ahhh" feeling to this part and give the song a present but soothing climax.
EtherBlu
EtherBlu replied 17th Mar 2015 - 10 years ago
Thank you for giving it another listen brother! And I think you're right. I should've added something there. The only thing is this time I wanted to avoid using synths & FX, I controlled a lot on technical aspects this time. But yeah, I will definitely try some Airy pad there. And yes, I assure the end will be changed :) sounds little abrupt right? Will definitely do something about it.

Cheers! :)

Wow, I love that synth lead at :30. So dreamy, makes me think about life haha. I think a tad bit more reverb on the piano will help it fit into the mix more easily. And I agree with danke, maybe something a little more busy to help speed up the part at 2:00. But I definitely love the idea. Very relaxing.

you should try try to blend polka and rap together! :P If you can pull this one off so beautifully, I KNOW you have the skills to make it sound good! Haha, and I was indeed referencing the interesting appearance of the sound wave. Very...other-worldly-looking. Almost has the Eagle Nebula shape to it!
StaticNomad
StaticNomad replied 19th Mar 2015 - 10 years ago
Regreetings.

Yes, I probably would blend rap and polka together if I liked polka (it's sort of OK, I guess) and if I had any raps to use.

I only merge genres I like and can just about manage to play. I have many more crazy, half joke ideas for genre mergers though I doubt I'll be doing all of them as I'm not really capable. Or I don't want to.

For instance, one joke genre name I came up with is 'grabba' - a cross between grime and gabba. But I don't like either genre so I won't be the one to do it. But I would like to make 'cuntstep' - a merger of country and, you guessed it, dubstep.

Yes, this is a pretty cool-looking waveform, though I'm not quite sure why. Seems nicely balanced and has a pleasing shape. I don't know if waveform shape has any real relationship to music quality but I can think of one example.

Most tracks I see on here that are horribly loud solid blocks of toothpaste turn out to be shit. Seriously - if I see one of those, these days I tend not to even press play as it's almost always the same unimaginative, histrionic, brickwall-mastered crap.

I did actually look up the Eagle Nebula so now know what it is but can't see how it looks like this waveform. Not to worry.

If you would like to hear perhaps my craziest genre-merging track, check the following adventurous little beast, called Way Beyond Wrong. Here's the track description:

"Probably the greatest banj-metal-hiphop-jazz joint ever. With lead saxophone, house bass, rock and metal guitars, Eastern banjo, jazz and hip hop drums and a tasty dose of drum and bass thrown squarely in your face. You can headbang or throw some body-poppin hippity-hoppity shapes to this mofo, for real. A lot of genres covered in 7 minutes so hopefully the time will fly by. And, yes, there really is acoustic banjo as a lead instrument on top of some crunching and crashing metal guitar and drums. Long live Banj Metal"

Nice to see your likeness here on the Loop again man! Hope all has been well! This one is TOTALLY dog-commercial worthy! I can so hear it behind some national Iams dog ad with the tagline "release the wild in your dog" or something haha. I love the drums! They're awesome. Beautiful exciting, happy buildup and tops off with that neat and simple guitar solo. Keep up the awesome work, Ether! I want MORE!!

DAT SOUNDWAVE DOE. Hey Static. This is truly a beautiful blend of two seemingly incompatible genres. In my opinion, the metal part of the song could have started a little earlier, but it is definitely okay as is. Keep posting this awesome stuff man. Cheers!

StaticNomad
StaticNomad replied 16th Mar 2015 - 10 years ago
Thanks, man.

I don't really know what "DAT SOUNDWAVE DOE" means. Maybe something to do with the slightly interesting-looking waveform. Hard to know. But I do know a doe is a deer. Doe a deer a female deer.

The chill jazz groove stuff that is returned to around 5:50 originally came earlier but I wanted to get the metal in a bit sooner so shifted stuff around, as I always do (I don't really plan my "compositions" out in advance). Still, I agree the metal could arrive earlier as it takes a few mins to get to that heavy shit.

All the same, I like to think the swinging jazz grooves before the metal are interesting enough for real jazz metal fans (who are they anyway?) to be prepared to wait a bit. This ain't pop music so there's no getting to the chorus. Not gonna happen.

I'd like to make some other seemingly incompatible genres work together. No idea if/when I'll manage that. But I've done it before so I like to think I'll do it again.

Thanks again.
