Hey Todd, you are right saying that technical know how is important. I agree completely. But what I want to say is: watch out because over trying to get the perfect sound the creativity might easily take the back seat. Both is important, but my point is that you can reach somebody with a good song that has a bad sound rather than with a bad song that has a flawless sound. But that's only my opinion. Stay creative ...
My regards,
Michael
Thanks man! I absolutely agree! I think the priority has to be your idea and creativity and the production plays a supporting role to that. Although good production can certainly help get your idea or message across and make it potentially more enjoyable for the listener. So yes, both are important, but the creative side to me is top dog in the process. I sometimes have to remember to try and not "fiddle" with knobs etc. too much with each instrument as it is added in regards to sound quality, but rather make sure the new instrument added is "right" sound for what I want. And maybe even trying to not do any production work until the song is completely flushed out in its bare bones form.
What an interesting array of a muzical smorgasboard. :-)
I know what you mean about change, you look back and realize how far you've come and hadn't even noticed. But that's what makes it fun!
I don't see the original, but I'm sure it sounds terrible!!!!
Haha...JUST KIDDING! :-)
Hi Patricia. Thank you for listening and commenting.
Sometimes when I think I am stuck or feeling down about any progress, I find it helpful to back to where you started just to see/hear the improvements you have made and feel good about that.
Ironically though, I think sometimes it's better not knowing you are bad because it takes the judgement out of it and perhaps you are actually more free to play explore and make mistakes. Judgement is where joy goes to die! :)
Anyway, I couldn't post the link in the original post because Looperman won't allow it. So here is the link to the original I put out about a year ago.... https://soundcloud.com/toddlove/mysterious-power
From a mixing stand point this feels very flat and dull. No EQ or compression, I didn't do any panning, and some other things as well. I know I have SO much more to learn and I could probably come back and remix this track in another year and hopefully do an even better job. But, it's the journey not the destination. Trying to enjoy the process. Besides, this is only the production side of things, it's more important to have something to say with the music itself, even if it sounds not technically perfect.
I've gone on WAY too long, sorry. :) Thanks again!
Nice job man once again you did it, I agree with PatriciaEdwards it's in the right key and everything blends well, sonically sounds nice, I like it man NICE!!!
Yo homie very nice, I like the low end on this track as well, the over all mix is nice I think everything is setting in its place nothing fighting for space, I dig this man!
Thank you for listening and commenting. I think you are right about the warmth. I tried to address that and also added some bass/lower end to the track as well. If interested, here is a link to the revision.
Whoa! This is great! Used to listen to a reggae radio show every day home from work. They played all offshoot genres of reggae with tracks similar to this. Great vocal track, great production on the track on all levels. Very cool!
Thank you so much! I never really listened to this type of music before, but of course was aware of it and thought it was interesting. I listen to more straight up Reggae on occasion though. If you are interested, the updated version is on Soundcloud. (link in one of the comments below). Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment, I appreciate it.
Thanks again. This is the super helpful type of insight I was hoping to get here, so thanks for that. Let me know if you ever need another set of ears on anything.
I think you asked if I was English. I'm 50% British, although I was born and raised in the Sates, my mother is originally from England and has since moved back. I've been many ties and really enjoy the Lake District...and all those great sweets, and Marmite too! :)
to me 0.19 to 0.26 the phenomenal bit is a little late to my ears. i don't know what daw do you use but with cubase (which i use) each track got that a delay fonction and you can fix the timing of the track.
Thank you so much for the feedback. I think you were right. I tried to fix it but I may have wound up making more of a mess. I need to take a break at this point, but here is the most current version if you have time, see if this is any better. Thanks mate!
Cool track mate
i listened from A to Z but if you allow me I am a little annoyed by some voice placement that I find a little too laaaaiiddddback which gives me impression that it is a little too behind the beat
But that may just me or my opinion
Thanks for listening and for the feedback. I think I spent more time focused on the instrumentation than I did on the vocals. So it's highly possible you are hearing some behind the beat stuff. I'm wondering if you could specify just one point in the track so I can hear exactly what you mean though? Thanks again!
Ok! It's jammin. Mannnn I would say upload the instrumental to this by itself too!
Cuz although I "heard" his voice, I was too busy moving to the muzic. Haha
Great work. That drum work, them drum rolls.
Sorry! It kind of sets me in the mood of Soul to Soul vibes or a sweet marching band.
Great job working around the vocals!!
Hi Patricia. Thank you for listening and commenting. I'm so glad you enjoyed that track, even if it was more for the instrumentation. :) I'm glad the drums stood out to you. I'm also a drummer so I always try to make sure they sound good.
I forgot about Soul to Soul...so I just watched their Back To Life video, ha!
Thanks again, much appreciate your time, and I'm also a fan of your vocals, you have a very sweet voice!
Hip Hop Funk vibes!
Good job with Pollaso's vocals, everyone can't do a job like this!
I'm not real handy with the technical aspect of things but it's in the right key, tempo, is blended well and didn't make me cringe! :-) Enjoyed!
Haha! I'll take that comment every day of the week! I'm not a "real" composer/producer yet so maybe I'm, excuse the pun, on the right track. :) Thank you for taking the time to listen and to comment, I appreciate you for that.
Thanks for having a listen and for commenting, again, much appreciated. I'm almost 50 so yeah I guess late 90's was big audio time in my life ha! Also, I found this link with every genre of music with an example. It's really cool. http://everynoise.com/engenremap.html

I also tried to warm up the track a little overall as well. Hopefully these were both moves in the right direction.
I uploaded the revised track to my Soundcloud page if anyone wants to hear the difference. Thanks again!!!
