I don't really know the song, but it sounds like you were hitting the key changes (which as I'm sure you know is the hardest on the singer), so as far as singing goes sounds good to me. The whole thing is clean and well put together.
I am curious why you would want to do a cover. I kinda can't stand doing them, and if I'm not already booked at a bar knowing I have to cover 3 hrs (so maybe 20ish songs), I don't bother learning them, and if I do it's a very small amount of time per song (sometimes none at all, I just listen for the "nashville numbers" and call it "leart").
Hope that didn't seem cynical or something, I was just curious if it is practice, fun, both, or part of something that you are already doing anyway.
Like I said, good production, squeaky clean instrumentation.
Funny you should ask. The main reason I did this one is because this song just entered my brain a couple months ago and wouldn't go away. So I thought doing a cover would be the best way to excise it.
Also, on top of writing the more minimal, ambient pieces I've been doing I'm also working on my 'songwriting' specifically. Obviously it helps to reverse engineer songs that I love in order to improve my skills in that department. And truthfully I'm not really feeling confident enough about my own songs to post them here yet.
Anyway hope that answers your question! Thanks for the listen and the comment of course.
Almost went disco house for a few min after the third change. Nice kick tone. The whole mix is a bit muffled, but that's probably by design, a genre stylistic choice (I usually "master" so about -10 LUFS average, this is probably more like -15ish).
Old stuff is good and all... where's the new stuff?
Thanks! The quietness is suitable if we take the original literary work into consideration anyway. I'll do my best to improve my arranging skills in the future!
Good metal track. I see what you mean by the guitar tone. It has a certain "unwanted fatness" that I think you were trying to get with of with passive pickups. I don't use active pickups because I beat the hell out of my Gretsch (on medium strings).
Try using you distortion only as the compressor. Also, you can turn down the volume just a hair and that will act as a false compressor.
Also, post cabinet emulators might be your best friend.
Remember, it's not the gear, it's the ear. A good guitar player can improvise a solo with a piece of wire and a broken bottle, to the delight of an audience.
Obviously faved, metal/rock of this quality is super rare here.
Tnx fro kind words? means a lot. Yeah its never about the gear. At the begging this project was all about blast beats and hardcore brakedowns and all of my needs were overed by Soldano head, decimator stomp and couple OD pedals. But then, when you decided to consume satan little less often and add some nuances to your music it all has begun. Changing Oranges and Marshalls searching for IT, while trying not to buy some BOUTIQUE bullshit head is a stuggle. Thanks again!
Thanks Bod - Got a few those already but lots of stuff I dont know too - I like to experiment with different sounds and instruments and tools but at this stage my results are somewhat still somewhat accidental - never follow a recipe when I cook either - though probably sometimes should ; )
It's free. Almost all the stuff I use is free, with the exception of what comes with FL Studio Pro (which still has more stuff to pay for within it, which is bullshit, post $200).
Thanks Bod - the sax is not a plugin ... thats one of 2 samples along with the vox samples (sorry should have written that more clearly)
I like pendulate too - but vital is amazing
Thanks for listening ... I just posted this afternoons effort but have to go to bed ... big work day tomorrow ... so look forward to listening to your new one (and others )the end after work tomorrow : )
Thx for listening and the feedback…
I guess most of mine would be backing tracks, meant for vocals.
I normally have a song rapped out in my head when doing the music..lol
Hello boD, thank you for the kind words. I wish it was actually professional, but unfortunately I can't afford professional equipment at the moment, so I'm just trying to make the most of what I have. I'm glad you like it.
Always appreciated!
Happy to help. Make sure they are all dry (no post EQ, but "baked in" wet FX are fine, such as guitar pedal FX), and normalized (if possible). Also, I get to wait up to 24 hrs for OneDrive to "unfreeze," so I might be sending you a google drive folder link instead, we will see.
I think I still have a shared folder with you. If you want, I can send a fresh link. Drop your stems in. I will fix your loudness/saturation/muddiness issues, then explain what I did via email.
Hi Ben, that's an awesome offer man. Let me do that, we had the folder for the "guitar battle" right? I'll create some exports over the weekend. You da man!
Good percussion in the beginning and use of delay. Lots of reverb, but I'm sure you weren't going for a dry sound (pun intended, which is also a dry joke, pun intended^2)...
:D
Lead voice cuts the ears a little, but you kinda need that to make it cut through the mix anyway.
So this guy Rhys Chatham influences me. He is a serious music
composer This, tune was a Post Minimalist tune that used 100 guitars. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUKF_K3vNeE
It uses modern rock instruments as its basis.
I like that idea, so I used a few fewer bass guitars than a 100, but quite a few in the end. I wanted it to be a fully enveloping tune in the beginning and then sort itself out by the middle by minimalizing, then building back subtle arrangements to explain the basslines. Double bass drums to break up the simple yet pounding snare. From Fog to Clarity to Function would describe the song in my ears.
I love the blatant producer tag abuse (at least I think I got the joke). Great bass, rumbles the whole time. Nice vox choices, samples or did you have an actual singer?
Seem like a much better mix on this one too, nice and fat in the middle instead of rather mid-scooped like some of your previous tracks have been (my opinion anyway).
It took a while to come together but glad I stuck around. I like all the layer of information happening at about 2:35. Nice change as well in the middle. A "4 on the floor" beat needs a change every 3 min or so.
Nice ideas here, sounds like part of a larger set, an almost DJ feel. Keep it up.
Thanks for stopping by, I was beginning to think
You were back on the road.
I'm still in the lab trying to get the exact sound
I want out of my Synth. I guess this sound is ok for
now.
Thank you for your listen, encouraging comments
and the Fave.
Lots of good writing. You may want to consider soundgoodizer with a little bit of setting A on the subs, so the hit harder.
All the parts are there, and this deserves more faves. The only thing it needs is a significant increase in loudness. I expected it to break my speakers more.
I been in a cover band learning what is essentially a "nostalgia act." It is unfortunate that rock elements have been slowly disappearing from music in general.
Well, I'm sure all the jazz cats felt the same way back in the day, when the Beatles took over.
Anyway, watch out for nostalgia. A respect for the past is healthy; an obsession with it not so much.
Not that any of this applies to you; you don't seem the tyoe to always be looking backwards. I blame my rant on the involuntary emotional response your music caused...
You are correct in that I look forwards to creating modern Avant music and ideas, but I find the past useful as well as tying together something stronger musically sometimes. I really did not indulge in the grunge sound even though I was aware of it at the time. I never actually made a true grunge tune before this one. Rock ain't dead yet. The Europeans are keeping it going albeit with synths, but it´s alive.
¨I blame my rant on the involuntary emotional response your music caused¨ that's the best compliment when your music can hit someone emotionally.
Take care, thanks
You need to watch the VH1 documentary series "Metal Evolution." Make sure to watch the "lost episode."
I love that distorted mono synth solo, pretty much every time you do it.
Metalish is a good title, psychedelic is probably a good categorization. I listen to plenty of heavy music that is not metal. Heavy metal makes me think NWOBHM or 80s spandex (thanks to my country of origin), which this is neither.
You know that I got the idea for that particular Synth/Guitar kind of sound when we did that track together last year.
I was obsessed with finding a wild Lead Guitar sound at that time. Either I find a sound that has the proper attack but crappy body or this style which I think has a cool sounding body but that distorted attack really bugs me and I cant seem to get it just right. I've since given up my search and just settled for a Synth sound that's wild Guitar-ish.
Needs a clear bass line, probably a ride every 8th or quarter note (quietly), to further establish the beat. Probably could use another layer of chords, perhaps piano, but long, minimalist chords. Also you buried that solo, don't hide it.
Message me direct if you want more info, or if you want additional stems, or a look at your mix.

Vital was a game changer for me, along with Pendulate, which is a mono "west coast" synth.

That "sour note" in the bassline that starts at 3:11 is a bit risky, but I think is paid off.
Nice double bass ad 4:07, and more later, totally unexpected.
