I edit each sound individually being sure to include variances in the panning, as well as the pass filters to separate the sounds from each other. You increase the space you are working with by panning sounds to the sides and using filters to keep them in different, desired frequency ranges so they do not distort each other. :)
No, I don't think it's just you...I also feel that it mixes both moods. I'm very glad you liked it and I'm sure I will be making some more similar stuff here and there in the future. In fact I already did some similar stuff.
