And I'm straight in with a simple 'hello' - no fucking about with elaborate, lengthy intros requiring asterisks for clarification*. 'Tis my new, more minimal approach. Check it out:

hello

So, this is a nice track bro but I have some major restructuring suggestions though I'll understand if you don't implement any of them. They're what S. Nomad would do** and not everyone should always do what S. Nomad does.

Intro is OK though thin and lacking low end (which it certainly gets on 0:22).

But the coolest and most memorable section is the reggae bass grooving one on 0:44. So, start track off with that section ie from 0:44. Then at 1:50 go to section starting 0:22.

Piano is damn classy in this - a real nice touch, especially the low notes. Your reggae section is damn funky. You can indeed groove and don't let any foolish Nomads tell you you can't. Funkiness of this section reminds me of my stuff and is the strongest material here. Somewhat Eastern Toolish riff is more your thing. Also decent, just not as memorable.

You already know what I think of the fadeoutro: not good enough, bro!

I believe you have the wherewithal to improve this.

More later.

Oh, and if you see Jon Bon Jovi when you're out and about, tell him to get out and scape the land. He could start by brushhogging Bill Pitt's land. Or ass.

Nomad, over thinking, over analysing, separating his body from his mind.

An announced unannounced "hello". Nice.

"Intro is OK though thin and lacking low end (which it certainly gets on 0:22)."

I was trying to have the intro more mid-heavy with no real low or high end, then have the drums slowly receive their high-end before the bass hits. I was going for effect. It could be done better, I'm sure.

"You already know what I think of the fadeoutro: not good enough, bro!"

Already been extended but still in the DAW. I've not ended it yet, but I let the now existing fading guitars fade and kept the bass and drums and started piano on top which then goes to some sax. I need to change the feel of the drums in this new section, as it's just the last drums duplicated several times so I could write more from where it ended.

"I believe you have the wherewithal to improve this."

I originally thought "wherewithal" meant mental ability and cleverness. Looked it up and I was a bit off. More about the financial ability, but I believe it is used mostly as "ability".

I saw Bon Jovi. Kidnapped him. Tied him, hanging from the wrists in my garage. I took a razor knife, slit the skin from clavicle to clavicle, and punched a small hole below the slit in the middle of the chest, where I attached a small hook and hung a 5 gallon bucket. I started dripping water into the bucket, adding weight. The weight of the water began pulling the slit and his torso peeled all the way down to the waist. That's when the bucket touched the ground.

He seemed a bit miffed.

Evan, be stoned, he's guilty as the government.

Ok,

This is nice. Good melody and so on. Well played, nice mixed down ..... just relly good stuff for people who are into melodic guitar music.

If you hadn´t it sayed, i wouldn´t never get a differens between the bass guitars befor and after 2:24 ... in fact it sounds like guitar music and not much like bass guitar music. But i bet this is because i am just not a bassman :)

I had done some more "overdrive" to some of the (bass)guitars, to make this track a bit more agressive. For me it is, in this way you made it, a little to soft. But thats only me :)

And like others sayed - this is not to short at all. No need to make it longer. If a song isnt long, then it is just not long. If you make it longer it dosent get better then mostly

But - i really enjoyed the listen

stay tuned

I will give it a go, but I'm not a fan of adding distortion after the fact. We'll see how it sounds!

This is superg cool. That meaty bass is amazing. Now I'm listening to it again, immediately. Love the juxtaposition of twinkling piano with heavy bass, but minute 3 on is my favorite.

Hey, thanks for the listen!

I like the piano going over the bass guitar. I think they go well together. 3 minutes on is where the actual six-strings start, and I like the guitar lines there, as well.

Take care.

I thought you did one heck of a killer job E with this mix ideas. Like the piano and how you approach it in the track. Got this visual surrounding (third eye) kind of feel to it. Like how badass it grows into 2:00 - after. That dist solo at 2:30 section is sickly done I enjoyed it :) Very good instrumental. Goes great for visual themes such as videos and gaming entertainment. Really cool E, thanks for sharing. Peace.

Nice filtered intro, :48 sort of a reggae like bass line. so that's where the money went? Into that gorgeous piano lick. 1:30 serious strings. I like this new approach. 1:53 is all serious up in da face! 2:24 nice synths, I like this section. Then you faded it out. no this needs to continue on in like a S.Nomad length song. Waaaayyyy tooo shorrrtt! This is a really cool song that you need to keep at my friend, such potential.

Mr. Cru,... how are you?

"so that's where the money went? Into that gorgeous piano lick."

About twenty minutes went into it. I'm trying to play all my virtual instruments with the actual keys on my midi controller, instead in finagling with mouse and piano-roll. It means more to me if I actually play it. I just wind up cleaning up the timing.

"2:24 nice synths"

All guitar distortion. No synths. I really don't like the distortions I have because they are all digital. They all break up the same and that is kind of more buzzy than meaty. I've have guitar called synths several times. They do kind of sound like synth buzz.

I've been working with this and it's getting longer. I'll update sometime soon.

Thanks for the listen, kind words and advice. It will be taken.

Thanks again.

First and foremost I loved "your" percussion work on this particular track. @ 1:45 that high freq guitar chorused sound sits nicely with the acoustic sounds. I think the tonal quality is just fine on this one. I did a simple homage to you and Ed (Tumbleweed) in what I found reminded me of both of "your" styles. I called it Generation Swallowed. But it's working title was called "Irregardless, you're not their there" but I didn't want to make you bleed from the nose and ears before you listened to it..only after you listened to it. (Tongue is now firmly planted in cheek.)

Juggle,....

My boss' first job after getting out of collage was with a road building crew. He was put near the end of a dead-end road and told to direct traffic. He saw two cars that day. His boss, and his mom, who brought him lunch.

Standing there the whole day, with no traffic to control, he picked up three rocks and taught himself to juggle. Right there. He just turned 65 and can still keep it going for a good 10 seconds. One day with spare time and you can pick up a "skill" pretty easy. I did hacky-sack. Destroyed my knees. Fun, but evil.

Goodness gracious great balls of fire

I can't match you for jailbird exes. Mad that you've got at least three. What do they all have in common, apart from The Evanator? "HAIR: BRO", bro. Cynthia's the only one who has no clothes. QuincyAnn looks quite happy.

You could take a little day/weekend trip, visit all three and catch up. Can't see why the wife would mind that. Take her along, for shits and grins (no, hadn't heard that). We say "shits and gigles" though I never have and never will, partly because I dislike the word 'giggle'.

You must do a track about your jailbird exes. Maybe call it Incarcerated Exes. Or Relaxing In An Orange Jumpsuit, a phrase I seem to particularly like. If it's hip hop (as if), definitely go with "Bitches In The Big House".

Fun shit you don't know: in Britain, everyone in jail is, technically, serving "at her Majesty's Pleasure". That bizarre term is old but still in use today. Partly because all court cases are brought in the Queen's name. Armed forces and police also ultimately serve her/the monarch. They should get rid of that phrase as I can't imagine she's really getting much pleasure each time someone's jailed (aslo known as "couldn't give a shit").

Damn the butler and his "thnaks". For that he gets no snacks. And then beatings across the back with thumb tacks.

"Send the old away by way of trebuchet."

Surely one of your greatest phrases. I will make a track probably called Sent Away By Way Of The Trebuchet. If I can get a load of bass g or at least some badassery in there, I will dedicate it to you (2nd time). Give me a couple of years and maybe I'll have enough tracks for a whole album dedicated to you. I could call it All Hail The Evanator (He Ain't No Mothafuckin' Hater) or just Bass Bro.

You're absolutely right about "in hospital" and it's dumb that Americans don't recognise the difference between the state of being hospitalised and being in a specific building. So, in the UK if I'm standing outside a hospital and a friend wanders off, I might ask where he's gone. "The Evanator's gone in the hospital to steal morphine and make out with the elderly cancer patients" might be the answer. We wouldn't say he's "in hospital" to thieve and get it on as he hasn't been admitted as a patient, just walkd into the building. Both subtle and big difference.

I also enjoy our conversations.

Resinous greetings, you utter basstard*

So, I shook-a-took-a listen to this mothafucka and can confirm that it is a Nice Track Bro.

I suspect that may be you shook-a-took-aing. Quite a surprise. You've come up with a new sound again and it starts off like a real dance track. Some tight grooves.

0:26 the piano's back and pretty funky.

0:42 strings join in nicely. Nice, full sound here. Almost a bit of an African feel from the percussive grooves. Sort of Afrobeat. Certainly a happy, sunny vibe.

1:14 badass guitar. Great timing on that highish riffage. Meshing nicely with the bass g underneath.

2:02 good new notes. Pretty damn melodic.

Not sure if this is too layered. Doesn't seem too busy or crowded a mix. Definite fusion music that's hard to categorise.

Seems like quite a short track but the end fade is indeed skilfully done. You're perfecting the fadeout here though last few secs should hang on just a bit more. They can be improved!

Might want to get rid of the track's initial mouth opening as it goes into the first "shook".

Overall: this shook me all night long, even though I listened to it in the morning.

Does the the title have a meaning? Probably.

Later, moon landing video faker.

*Could also be someone who's a total retard on bass so not you.

Word up, guit picker.

"I suspect that may be you shook-a-took-aing"

Indeed. Shit's hard to say more than 6 or 8 times. The mouth winds up locking, then you can't get it out even once. "Shooka-Tooka-Tooka" took a few tries to get right and have something usable.

"Seems like quite a short track but the end fade is indeed skilfully done. You're perfecting the fadeout here though last few secs should hang on just a bit more. They can be improved!"

The "expertly faded" is sarcasm, because I know you see it as a lazy way out when used all the time. I did take your advice and lengthened the fadeout. It was a bit abrupt.

"the track's initial mouth opening"

Done. Hadn't noticed it. I read that you should mix at lower volumes, so I never heard it. You must listen to stuff a bit louder.

Later, track fade and reverse cymbal hater.

hello Evan

I really like this one a lot, your productions are always very enjoyable to listen. The vocal-drum loop from the start is interesting and makes
me want to hear some similar elements later along the track. There are fine bass riffs in here and overall I like how you envisioned the entire composition
also different guitar upper parts somewhere in the middle are fine too.
The time was divided strictly into 16ths but it is not really a funk territory (no need to be funk of course). I think you might always consider playing with dynamic of the track even more (for example by taking off instruments at parts) or create more rythmic variety - some of the passages from this track may sound overplayed and overlayered, even too busy sometimes (at least to me). Introducing different phrasing from the standard and usual 2x4 bars long 'question and answear' type of melodic work could be a nice change as well... so I am only trying to say something useful here.

I have downloaded some of your bass loops and tried to construct a new composition based on 'dark-flow-bassline-palm-mute'. It is not finished,
maybe I will sit with it again today later and eventually upload here.

Best to you,
Alex

Evisma replied 7th Sep 2015 - 10 years ago
Hello, Mr. Alex.

"makes me want to hear some similar elements later along the track"

I put it on the outro but it never sounded right. I make find more meaningless stuff to add at other points in the track.

"The time was divided strictly into 16ths"

I've never been a very groovy bassist. I struggle against the urge to lock into 8ths and 16ths. I need to work on my grooviness.

"playing with dynamic of the track"

I've also always been bad at leaving open air in tracks. I make dense shit to hide my lack of good tone and playing.

I appreciate the listen and the feedback. I did try the vocal idea. Thanks!

No fuckin' way - Tally Pruit is in jail!

You sure did answer my query about what she's up to - relaxing in an orange jumpsuit* - but I really didn't expect to see an online record of that. I wonder if we have the same thing here. Seems weird you can just see and download someone's mugshot/criminal record. I didn't download hers as you have to pay. And she ain't my ex-skank.

Did you know she was in jail or just happen to look her up? Congrats on your bullet dodge.

Her ethnicity is 'W'. White, I presume. Is that really a proper ethnicity? Maybe another is TNW (The N Word).

I seem to derive a lot of humour from that annoying term 'The N Word'.

Thnaks for the minor Moby D spoilers. You sure do have some weird track titles so Queequeg on the Pequod will successfully continue that tradition. I think you should give it a very engaging first couple of mins, then have at least 10 mins of dragging, procedural bass twiddling, then end on some furious whale-slaying badassery (ocean metal). The track will then still be a classic in 200 years. Getting through those dull 10 mins will be a musical rite of passage.

Thanks for letting me know about the US "practise/practice" thing. I stand corrected. If I'm in the US and happen to write anything, I will try to remember. Or just be a rebel and write my usual English English.

I've no problem with car bonnets and hoods. Related words in terms of headgear so no big deal each country opts for one over the other. I just don't get why Americans reject the useful and specific 'queue'. Like if you always could only say "I'm taking you into custody" rather than "You're under arrest".

Nomad, currently drawn beyond the lines of reason

*Don't know if that's true or just a TV stereotype

Tally mutha-fuckin Pruit, Yo.

Glad you liked the mugshot. Cracks me up.

"Did you know she was in jail or just happen to look her up?"

It's a site I check every few days. Don't know if you looked around the site or not, but it has the updated arrests from the last few hours on it's main page.

I went there to try to find my mugshots from '99 and 2000, (17 & 18). It was too long ago and I've never been able to find them. One should have my long, black/green hair from the Antichrist Superstar period. I've never paid for my background/criminal record. It may be there, may not.

What's funny is that Tally is only one of three of my ex's with mugshots on that site.

This was my Elementary School girlfriend.
http://springfieldmugshots.com/mug/quincyann-bruce

And I must make a correction. Tally Pruit was from Junior High, not High School.

This one was from High School.
http://springfieldmugshots.com/mug/cynthia-d-lewis

"Thnaks for the minor Moby D spoilers"

Thnaks is the sound of a dick hitting bubblewrap at a high speed. I predict lashings for the butler. Might be time to get a new one. They do wear out. Send the old away by way of trebuchet.

I felt since the book had a chapter named that, it wouldn't give much away. I always read the index and whatnot.

"humour"

Humor? (hehe) We don't have the "u". Well, we have it, but we don't add it just for humor's sake, or "for shits and grins". Not sure if you've heard that one. I like it. "For shits and grins" gets used a lot.

""I'm taking you into custody" rather than "You're under arrest"."

We say "In the hospital", and I've heard your fellows say "In hospital". Our version I guess is stating more of a location, where as yours is more a state of being.

I really enjoy our conversations. Next to my wife, I speak to you more than anyone else. I appreciate that you usually instigate them, as I'm kind of a quiet person and never really strike up conversations. There is usually only one Evisma comment on your tracks, and several Sta-mads on mine. I never think I have much interesting to say. I feel like I'd probably ramble about the minutia of my day, and that really doesn't belong all over your track comments. So, I appreciate that you've started nearly all of our "comment conversations". I don't mind it on my tracks at all.

Tally Pruit*, bass bro.

If it is the evening for you. Otherwise, try not to run that ship aground, Captain Ehab**.

"Marriam-Webster never put out a new addition..."

True but Merriam-Webster do. You're missing an 'e', Mr E.

I'm still thinking about Tally Pruit, wondering what she's up to (hopefully reading this), whether she ever got rid of the nits and if she's still emotionally scarred from being thoroughly Evanated on the bus.

Ha, I'd forgotten about FourObesePussies. I do like that. One obese pussy would be quite enough to deal with but imagine being crushed/suffocated by four of them. Still, there are worse ways to go.

Went kayaking with a friend the other day who I hadn't seen in 2 years. She remembers all sorts of bizarre and amusing things I've said over the years. Probably passing jokes that I quickly forgot. She says I was quite fond of saying (to her?) "Salut, salope", which is my French translation of "Yo, bitch". I have no idea if the French ever say that. Translating "word up" in to French wouldn't work. I still don't know what it really means/where it comes from in English, despite quite often using it ironically as a greeting.

She also says that I once said it was a shame that T-shirts never have logos/designs printed on the armpits and that there should be more of that about. I have no memory of it but that's got to be a joke.

Please start using the noun and verb 'queue'. See if anyone tells you to "stop talking British".

I get the Lobos-Tesseradecade thing now and so may MrWolf14 (having heard Tesseradecade). Technically it works but it's not aesthetically pleasing.

Nomad, stepping into the shadow, forty six and two just ahead of him.

* See - there are an infinite number of possible greetings - even old girlfriends' bizarre names.

Tally Pruit, Kayaking kanoodler.

"I'm still thinking about Tally Pruit, wondering what she's up to"

http://springfieldmugshots.com/mug/tally-marie-kocher

Looks like she's cooking and selling methamphetamine, as of two years ago. Dodged that bullet. Someone took her. He probably was on a different bus route.

"Moby Dick, which I still haven't read."

I've been in the middle of that bastard for nearly a year. Very engaging to start off. Once they leave the harbor and meet Ahab, it drags like a wet sack of hammers. Just checked my bookmark and I'm at page 250, which is a VERY lengthy chapter about whaling line. The size of the hemp rope, how it's coated, the difference in the barrel setup between American whaling boats and other. The barrels hold the line on the smaller boats so there is less tangling. One big barrel vs two smaller ones. It's my version of a sleeping pill. I've heard it gets VERY good again once the white whale is finally spotted and the chase begins. As for the last 150 pages,..... all fluff and irrelevant backstory, side story and plain old marine biology. Queequeg is a very interesting character, and I know there is a chapter titled "Queequeg in his coffin", so I guess he dies. Too bad. I've planned to do a track about the book once I'm finished called "Queequeg on the Pequod".

I'll start calling lines "queues" if you call car bonnets "hoods".

Oh, I checked the "practise/practice" thing. Practise is just on your side of the pond. My spell-check flags it as well. It is defined as only being your variation. We, I guess, rejected the idea and it is not a proper word here. It is NOT taught over here. Still good to know. I will not forget it, but I also cannot utilize it without being technically wrong.

Evan, as below, so above and beyond.

Skanktastic regreetings, Genital Rolling Pinner.

How goes the Grammar Naziing? I think you should give up on that.

I have returned because I have been thinking about Tally Pruit. What a bizarre name and what a fun little story. Certainly not The Evanator's finest moment. What a heartless bastard he was back in the day.

Tally Pruit doesn't even sound like someone's name but more like it might mean something like "Good evening" in Finnish.

I guess you no longer date any skanks. Wives tend not to approve of that. But, if she's a nice, clean, polite girl, I find that wives are totally OK with it. You can take that marital advice and bank it.

No, you've never mentioned being into Melissa Etheridge. Not sure I've even heard one of her songs.

Congratulations on educating me regarding pavement. I guess in the UK we would just say, collectively, 'paved surfaces'. Pavement here is just your sidewalk.

Also, do you Yank chaps ever use the word 'queue'? Why always this 'standing in line' business? There's a perfect, concise word for what you're taking three words to say and it's 'queue'. Still never heard an American use it.

"Lobos-Tesseradecade"

Is that supposed to mean 'a group of 14 wolves'?

Another time, Optimus Prime.

Yo, bro. Whatcha know?

"How goes the Grammar Naziing? I think you should give up on that. "

I never thought it would be a contentious subject, or any kind of "battle" as it's been called. Marriam-Webster never put out a new addition and had it seen as a declaration of war. It's just a collection of defined words.

I appreciate accurate critiques. I like to be corrected so I can learn from mistakes. I do not (typically) become indignant when being told I'm incorrect about something. Certainly not when I see a list of definitions.

My only regret on that thread was singling out an individual offender. Everything else has been cracking me up. Good stuff.

"Tally Pruit doesn't even sound like someone's name but more like it might mean something like "Good evening" in Finnish."

This cracked me up as well. I could instantly hear it said as a greeting, or in place of "Land ho!" or "Thar she blows!"

"do you Yank chaps ever use the word 'queue'? "

It's High School vocabulary. We don't learn it till we're in our teens. I say "in line", but never queue. No clue what the aversion is all about, but we do seem to resist using and teaching it.

You should hear what we're taught about our interactions with the Native Americans when we came from your side of the pond. All love and welcoming. Never a mention of small-pox or genocide. Just a big, nice meal with cornucopias and beautifully prepared turkey. We're really not taught any of the obscene, disgusting and all around horrible things we've done to others, till college.

"Is that supposed to mean 'a group of 14 wolves'? "

Clumsily, but yes. His 14, and your last track name went together. It's nowhere near as classy as FourObesePussies, I know. I'll try harder.

Evan, within.

Very good track.
One of your best works (IMHO).
Distinctive Evisma-Sound. Well thought "interactions" between guitars tracks.
And a nice melodic touch (guitar or synth?)
Ciao, Domenico

PS: the "cymbal-fade-in" in the ending is a thing of beauty.

I appreciate it very much, Domenico.

Guitars are all real, but there is synth in here in the verses. Thanks for the listen and your thoughts.

Take care.

Dear MrEvisma,
I listened already twice to your nice song: I like it!
It has a strong "medieval" appeal in certain sections...I will not say that it reminds me of Jethro Tull, but actually it does :-)

Good guitar sound (it seems the "guitar version" of your bass sound... liked it).

Not so fond of the bass sound in the first part (~0:24) but it works perfectly in this context (will I ever find the courage to record a distorted bass in one of my songs? I strongly doubt it...)

Tons of good riffs. The interaction between bass/guitar seems very "well studied". (Crimson-ish I dare say). Good .

The song is not too long but very dense.

I don't like the marimba (...and who cares? could you answer)
I like the "synth sound" (with such a cool name...)

Overall: I liked this song a lot.

Lobos-Tesseradecade.

"the "guitar version" of your bass sound"

I do not have any guitar effects or anything like that. I have my Line6 Bass PodXT Live and that's it. That may explain the tones, but yeah, It's still my playing and I pretty much just to layered lead lines.

"I don't like the marimba"

Understood. I like the way they bring a happy vibe to whatever I put them in. I see how people would not agree though.

Thanks for the listen and the kind words.

Tidings of comfort and joy

Comfort and joy

I don't actually mind a bit of The Jove, as painful as that may be for you to read. I'm sure I used to listen to the Slippery When Wet album many years ago. It can be catchy stuff but I understand why they annoy people. I will endeavour to keep that douche and his side-douches (bandmates) out of future conversations. I'm pretty sure I saw his keyboard side-douche outside a bar in Beale Street in Memphis in 2013.

You may also be disappointed/baffled to hear I'm a big fan of Enya and have been listening to her a lot for the last few months. Good solo kayaking music.

"We too have pavement."

I thought you Yank chaps always called it 'sidewalk'. And so my American education continues...

I did actually Google 'seacrest' but finding there is a human being called Ryan Seacrest did not help explain your signoff phrase. Now I get it and find it quite horrendous. I'm tempted to find a video clip of him saying that excruciating phrase.

Now is a perfect time to mention of one of my favourite obscure words: illeism. It's only obscure (still never heard anyone say/write it)because it has a very specific meaning and it's exactly what the soulless Seacrest is doing: 'reference to oneself in the third person'. Other examples:

"2014 was a great year for Tom Cruise", said Tom Cruise.
"Ladies just love Evan Wantland", said Evan Wantland.

Yes, Jools Holland is OK and has a certain quirky charm. He's an actual musician (one obsessed with playing boogie woogie piano, that's what the style is called) rather than just some dick presenter.

I had an OK Tuesday though considered emailing you for a well wishing top-up but didn't, somehow managing to make it all the way to Wednesday.

Later, skank dater

Seacrest sends his love.

"I'm a big fan of Enya"

Enya is fine. ABBA is not. ABBA and Bjork are right out.

I may have mentioned before, I was really into Melissa Etheridge growing up. Manly? No, but even from her first album she was a great songwriter and really pulled at something inside of me. Very open and honest, and her guitar playing is rather impressive. Expressed loneliness very well.

"I thought you Yank chaps always called it 'sidewalk'."

It is a sidewalk, but we Yanks call every hard surface Pavement, not just the sidewalk. Be it asphalt, concrete, cement or true pavers.

""Ladies just love Evan Wantland", said Evan Wantland."

It's usually "Evan Wantland requires his daily rolling-pin genital abuse", said Evan Wantland. Yeah, that sounds more like something I would say.

"Later, skank dater"

I dated one skank in high school. Tally Pruit. Dumped her when I discovered she and her sister had head-lice. Dirty home situation. Shit freaks me right the fuck out! She confronted me, yelling, on the bus ride home as to why I was breaking up with her. She'd gotten wind.(I told one friend who ran their mouth) I was not intending to make it known to anyone, opting to do that over the phone, but the bitch asked for it, so I openly divulged her grossness to the whole, very attentive bus crowd. "How could you?" is what I got, and then she sat down and cried. NOT my best moment.

Evisma, through.
