Yeah. I kind of play by ear as well. I usually do know what key I'm in, but with complex chord progressions I just do what sounds right and I have no idea of what the chords are. Unfortunately, I'm now finding it hard to play the kind of stuff that you can do. I sold my 76 key Korg and got a little 37 key Virus Polar. The Virus sounds fantastic, but the keyboard is really too small to play good fat chords and melody lines with two hands. Your Yamaha would be much more suitable. I think I took a wrong turn, at least for some types of music.
Hey, Ronabo. I'm back, taking a break from working on my latest track. Am working through all yours and liking what I'm hearing a whole lot. I agree with many of the comments posted already on this one. First of all, this one, like your other tracks is crying out for R&B vocals. I love the chord progression in the middle section. I'd cut back on the arpeggios and keep them for the middle section, but it kind of depends on how things fit with a vocal. If I could sing, I'd be working up something on this one for sure, but I can tell from your tracks that you have a better sense than I do about how to craft a soulful melody line. I expect to learn from your examples. I think the drums need tightening, both in terms of applying some quantizing and also compression. I'm not sure if you've shifted kick and snare timing, but I'd play around with that to get the groove more locked in. Might want to drop the drums levels down in the mix, particularly the snare. Bass line is great. OK. That's my 2 cents worth. I'm off to listen to your next track!
I play by ear so I do not know really what key I am playing or what chord progression I am using. I appreciate the comments though and the constructive feedback. Thanks again.
Whoa! How did I miss this one? Great feel. This is the kind of music I love. Well, I like a lot of different kinds of music, but this kind of R&B/Jazz thing really hits home with me. I love it, but I must admit I don't know how to get that kind of sound and groove. Very jealous! :)
Glad that listened and enjoyed it. I love neo soul, rnb, jazz and kindof mix them up to get different feels. On this track I delayed the kick drum and snare but kept everything else on a 1 beat. Then I added a little swing to it. Sounds like we like the same sound. I would love to hear your other tracks.
thanks for the comment again. Love this! Smooth as butta my friend! Me being from Philly and a 70's baby :) I can definitely appreciated some Soul.. Any kinda soul.
Glad you put another mix out there for us to enjoy! You got me vibin' for sure! Just inspired me to produce a Neo Soul type track.
Thanks for you comments and I am glad that you liked it. I hear that a lot about my tracks .... that I need more low freqs. I will pay attention to that going forward. Thanks.
Very good tune!
Like the epiano: simple but builds the right carpet for the vocals (really looking forward to hearing it completed).
I like the drums, but maybe the snare could be a bit more "dry", not sure though... and since this is your song I'll let you decide :-)
I also second the idea of Ed: let the listener wait for the arpeggio 'til the first chorus. Maybe you could just serve smaller chops of it as appetizer in the intro.
The track is also well mixed.
Good job!

Mrwol14, Thanks a lot for these great comments. I really like the idea of chopping up the arp and giving the listener just a taste of it in the intro. I am definitely going to try that. I am glad you think that the track is mixed well... I try but that is my weakness.
Oh yeah....Danke is good musical company for sure...I can hear a nice R&B vocal on this one ronabo...but gotta say its just good listening even as it is...I think I might consider taking the arps out of the intro..and bringing them in for the chorus parts as you did...kind of gives the show away right off the start rather than letting it build a bit...just an idea...and certainly not a criticism..enjoyed it...dm good job....keep on...Ed
Thanks. You should check out the rest of my tracks and comment. :)
I listened to your track that you posted years ago. I like it a lot even though i didnt understand the language. The vibe was cool. When are you creating more tracks?
I really like it, Ronabo. You've got a good start and am looking forward to the completed product. Very arpeggio work. That's something I need to look into more.
Hahh...brilliant track...so special, made for vocs and that's cool...really have space for it, I imagined a good RnB voice for it...May I suggest stg? Thank you! :-) That sharp synth tone is a bit strange in this song...If this is want to be a vocal theme, that's ok, but if not, would you please find another tone for it? Just an idea...
There ya go...It's happnin' now! Thanks for keeping the bass at a reasonable level. Whoever started the styles of music where the bass is so damn loud you can't hear anything else, should be shot! I want EVERYTHING to be heard in my mixes.
I'm really digging this..This is really up my alley. I'm big on Neo-Soul. Would really like to collab with you soon! I think we can do some great stuff. I'm gonna fav this one!
I like this one ronabo...has a nice jazzy vibe...the bass is right on and you`ve got some great keyboard skills going on here...that little part where you drop the backing & tinkle the keys around 1;25 is really effective...smoooooth listening...like it the way it is...if I were to try & think of anything to change it would just be something along the lines of maybe adding a tad more variation....maybe throwing in a little bridge part way through to step it into some different/complimentary chprd progs......enjoyed the listen....well done.....Ed
Thanks Tumbleweed.. Glad that you liked it and I appreciate your feedback. This is a work in progress track so i just might add another part to enhance the track. Good idea about the bridge part.
Still smooth and still flowing, an improvment on the last mix. Maybe the lead is a little overpowering from 0.22?? thats my only thought?? Otherwise so smooooth and laid back. The keys from around 1.26 are amazing!!
