Nice number you have here, liked the feel of this, put me in a good mood. Pretty upbeat for chillout but it's great music to paint to or just having it play around the house in the background. Mix sounds clean, nice job!
Hi Wayne, thanks for your great feedback...your response of it being good for interesting background music is exatly what am attemting to achieve..
Cheers
Steve
Yo. You're really very good at this upbeat chillout thing.
A term I came up with in my teenage years, and one style of music I knew I really wanted to make, was 'upbeat ambient'. I probably also enjoyed the supposed contradiction there.
Here's a wonderful bit of upbeat ambient from a group very influential to me in my teenage years:
Good, held-note pre-intro. Then arpeggiated part is cool and driven along nicely those tasty reverbed, kickless drums (kickless so you can make the track take off when you bring it in).
Tat's a pretty mean and massive kick - sort of takes this more into a harder type of dance than chillout stuff. As does your big bassline on 1:58.
Everything's sitting very nicely - sounds like it could go on for ages. What's that crunch you have at the start of the bar eg 2:27? Sounds like some distortion there.
Very tasty little keyboard fill on 2:34 and pleasant, sparse little solo after that.
3:26 it sounds like a vocal has come it. No, something else - maybe even guitar.
Really banging now.
4:25 and we is gettin funky. But only for 15 secs or so. Gotta get back to main banging theme.
Next couple of minutes are enjoyable returns to previous themes, without doing anything especially new in them. Net awesome thing for me is fill at 6:37.
So, you've done some sort of stutter edit there and then slow down. However, I'd say you haven't got it right yet Needs to be smoother. Sounds a bit too awkward before the slowdown eg on 6:34. Should probably continue for a couple more measures. Sounds too much like and effect gone a bit wrong rather than a cool way that the track moves. I still like it - I just know you can make it better and more natural-sounding.
Not so keen on the fadeout ending but the rest was damn cool. Good length too.
Hi SN, awesome review...this is what makes looperman so valuable!..have made some tweeks (brought the trance chords in the final "bangibg bit"?-simplified the stutter) and replaced the file to see if its a bit better?. Listened to Jumbo,,,very cool...loved the arpeggioed keys mid way...Thanks again.
Steve
it's always a pleasure to listen to your wonderfull synth usage . I have always loved your musical elegance & selected levigated sound . JennY is a very good singer for such msuical styles as U usualy use her pellas . althoughT track was perfect as well too . I really having no guess what are U waiting for to publish a professional stylish album ! take care Steve . best wishes my tallented friend.___Behnam
Hey Steve.
Beautiful piece in CMinor. One of my fav keys to write in. and then the F makes it very interesting and eighties eclectic. I think. I was jamming to this on the keys tonight. nice work. good percussion.
Steve.
Well I'm kind of duty-bound to comment on a track when I'm mentioned in the track description.
I guess it turns out that Sugar Bytes Guitarist is pretty damn good, though I don't have it. I just bought Effectrix and Consequence though was seriously considering buying the whole massive bundle of all their stuff as it was really very cheap.
Lead guitar lines in this sound just fine and the clean tone does sound like a very well recorded guitar - which I suppose it is.
Lots of good bass movement in this and everything sits very nicely. It's maybe a bit country but that's not bad thing.
2:34 what's that little howling wolf sound? It's also there in the intro and first verse.
I'd probably prefer the backing chords to have a bit more grit to them but that's up to you.
That key change at 1:36 really makes me think of a vocal song. Not any particular one - probably a whole load of pop/rock ones.
Hi SN, love guitarist and will need to spend time working out how to program my own chords progressions..I am not good at reading instructions! The lead guitars were different VST's, Morhpine (50's style) and Purity at the end. Anyway thanks for the feedback and heads up on the SB sale!
Cheers
Steve
Oh man....love that guitar and the chord prog you lead this one into..and then that tasty kind of subtle melody lead that says...just relax & keep listening...this is one of those tunes that sticks in your head long after listening....absolutely super job Steve...my kind of music...thanks for the big smile on my face and the download...definite fav......Ed
Sometimes there is no need for sophisticated things to realize a very musical track .... Many passions and feeling, are sufficient ....
I listen with great respect, this that you have produced here .... All my musical wishes, for the new year .... Continue to amaze me.
Very cool track, nice laid back vibe. The guitars sound nice, love the effects on them. That change threw me a bit at first but I gave it a few listens and it grew on me. A wonderful sounding track!
Hi Wayne, thanks for the great feedback. I Have changed it a little by just slightly brightening the chord change by adding an F which I think makes it a nicer transition? Also a few sound affects and made the drumming a little more rock style? Thanks again.
Steve
Upbeat...the kind of music that leaves a smile on your face...it strikes me as a great mix of R&B...maybe a sprinkle on Motown (in the bassline)...and a lot of the best of Chillout...Keyboard players get such a great variety of cool sounds into the music...so talented players like yourself really have a lot of ammo to use with all the new stuff....O.K...I`m hitting the outro...and still smiling...its the kind of music that makes me want to go fire up the music pc and make a noise...but I`d rather listen to this right now....Great job sr.......Ed
Hello. Shortish review from me just to say that this is uplifting, really positive and feelgood stuff.
Great sounds, very smoothly produced, a nice length, nothing in particular to fault. Very professional overall mix and composition.
This isn't one that I suggest you lengthen as it feels just right.
Separately, you mentioned being inspired by my guitar playing and wanting to get some more guitar into your work. You may have seen (eg advertised on this very site) that software company Sugar Bytes are having a 50% off Xmas sale. I'm going to pick up 1 or 2 items from them. I was checking out the Guitarist software of theirs and thought of you. I'd probably like it too though I don't really need it, for obvious reasons.
Nice natural vibrations. It adds well to the view I am seeing. The changing from day to night. I can see the sky a cool blue whispers of the wind passing by sun falling asleep. There is a good vibe this shares, very chill track. What I did like the most is the changing sections that paints one full picture. What was on your mind with this expression. Conversating 5 minutes, seems like it went too fast. Natural is a good way to tag this. Thanks for sharing. Peace.
Ahh this is really nice and smooth. great usage of spacial mixing, love the rhodes like piano, and that style of guitar is one of my favorites (Tumbleweed, Chris Rea, Neal Hubbard etc). ahh an oboe as well. fav'd and d'loaded (Thanks) this is a special song!
Steve
I've primarily listened to Heavy Metal for nearly my entire 40 years on this planet. But, this track almost acts as a siren attempting to lure me into a strange, beautiful new world that is quite possibly the polar opposite of the one, in which I currently live. I'm not resisting. This piece is, for a lack of better terms, lovely. I've added it to my collection. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Hi, that is a huge compliment thank-you. Its very rewarding when someone ventures out of their usual genres and has a good experience. Thanks for taking the time to listen and your great comments.
Hi BB. JJ's vocals insipre good music and its such a shame I cant work with more of her vocals but beggers cant be choosers!! Anyway thanks for the great feedback.
"I have been enjoying your guitar work so much that I am actually looking for more natural guitar sounds in my stuff."
Thanks. Guitar playing is the way I express myself best and feel I have the most control over any musical element. Flowing playing generally comes quite easily to me even though I don't really practise or play that much.
As regards you getting more natural guitar in your stuff: I guess nothing beats real playing, with all its nuances and timing errors and idiosyncracies.
But have you tried any sampled-based guitar instruments as well as guitar VSTs?
I don't use them much (for the reason that I don't really need to) but they can be cool. Though when I do use them, I don't get the timing and feel and expression that I get from my actual guitar playing. It's more that I turn a guitar sound into more of a processed sound that complements all my synth stuff.
But maybe some of these guitar VSTs would suit you. There's one from Sugar Bytes that I haven't tried though they generally make good software.
As regards bands taking years to make one album, have you noticed that in the 60s bands used to knock out at least one album a year? More than one full album a year was not uncommon. These days one every few years is more common. I find the reasons for this quite fascinating. First is that studio time was more expensive then so I guess most albums were done by bands who regularly played live and then just went in the studio for a shortish time and knocked it out, without spending ages on their sound. More sounds available these days so more time spent tweaking!
