on Time Shift by Gsusfrk
Hi Gsusfrk,

I've recently set up an online podcast playing the best in unsigned 'd'n'b' dubstep house and electro, so if you're an unsigned artist and as long as the track 'time shift' is completely yours 'you made it all and didn't use any loops or samples from anyone else' then i would love to play it on this week's podcast which is going out on Friday,

just reply to me,
Ryn from Noizi Podcast.
Gsusfrk
Gsusfrk replied Unknown
I used loops twice - but they were royalty-free - so technically no. :)
Sorry about the lengthy wait, but college limits me quiet a bit. You still up for the enlistment for your podcast? Email me if you are. :)

Nice touch with the guitar part at the end mate. Though I was sittin there thinkin that for like the last minute or two the track could've used a bit more variation. The track has a really solid groove going with it, but somewhere near the end it kinda fell off and started being a lil flat. Making me think that the track is akin to riding a bike in a long race. Where in the beginning you've got the speed build and gear changes. The rider gets up to a certain speed (or hits a downhill trek) and lays off the pedals (the flat part vibe). Almost as if the rider knows that they've won the race and is just waiting to cross the finish line.
Which I suppose would be cool for 'live mix' purposes because it'd give you the chance to talk it up with the audience. Though from a purely listener stand point, causes lights to blink off, ya know.
So I'm thinkin that if you were to go back n rework this one, ya might wanna think about playing around with the drums more. Mainly what I was imagining is if ya did some start-stops with 'em (drums on button 1- press button 1, let off, press, let off, press, press, press, let off, press). And maybe even have break-away gaps where the drums don't play at all for a few seconds at a time (like 5 seconds here, 3 seconds there, and so on). Anyways, other than that this was a pretty sweet mix. Loved how it made me think of bicycle races (and I'm thinkin that would be sweet to use if ya ever did a music video to this too). Okiess, lemme stow it now. Later on!

lol Thanks for the advice - honestly I won't be remaking any songs as of right now - there'd have to be a lot of requests for that to happen... but hey maybe one day...
About the last drop - yeah I know, it was a bit tedious and I couldn't think of much more to do, but yeah, good on yah for thinking baout the mixing with diff tracks on a live mix. It'd work :D
Thanks again man :)

Hmm, stepping out of yer comfort zone I see. Cool deal mate. I like it when I see people doing that. Oft times it makes their music more interesting/appealing, ya know? I might not be much of a player, but I am an avid enthusiast and I can say that the guitar work on this was rather nicely done. And you were able to pair it well with your genre of choice I thought. The piano bits were cool too, though I would've liked to hear 'em more (or more isolated in parts, I should say). At any rate, nicely done amigo. Keep groovin on ay!? Lates!

Yeah I figured I'd try something new - nothing like testing your own ability - definitely does bring a 3rd person view of where you're at musically! THanks for the words man :)

I love the laid back presence this has (ended up turning up my speakers just a tad so it'd play out with more gusto). No worries mate, I just had 'em turned up about 40% at the start. When I go to max 'em out they really pick up. And the high's even start getting that fuzzy distort sound signaling that they're about to clip (that's just on my system though, so I'm just throwin that out there for you to watch out for on other systems on yer end).
Anyways, the vocal snippets on this were dead-on (and were kinda what I was talking about on one of the earlier reviews I sent ya not that long ago). The 'Listen' & 'Yo' ones were my fave. The drums were quite nicely done too and they gave me an idea which I'll share (for use on here or wherever).
I was thinkin it'd be seriously bad @$$ if someone were to drop out the bass, the hats, and the kicks- to just have the snare workin mad percs for an isolated stretch. Kinda like that vocal isolated break I was talkin about before, but longer and with the drums. And this way you could do an in-out, in-out, 1-2 punch with the drum sequence. EG, start out with just the snared part of drums (2), bring back the whole drum loop (1), swap back to just the snares (2), switch over to whole drums (1), stutter step the kick and start reintroducing other elements of the song...
Or something like that, you know, haha. Anyways, this was pretty sweet stuff here mate. Keep crankin 'em out. Later on!
Gsusfrk
Gsusfrk replied Unknown
Yeah man, you got some serious imagination - you should get on making some DnB :P
Yeah I'm definitely trying to get a higher quality sound going so theres no clipping or distortion! Nohting like a song you can listen to and it be like the wind on a beach with the light tickle of sand sifting between your toes and the large sighs of the ocean. That's how clear I'd like the songs to come out as - maybe not with that atmosphere but with the focus of clarity :)
Thanks for the kind words man!

Play 2 now...

I'm really digging how ya started and ended this with the same sounds (allows the song to be played seemlessly, back-to-back on repeat). Though I'm thinking the outro might be a little too long (as is, seems kinda empty when compared to the beginning). Yet, in relation to mix sessions I'm thinkin that it may be better that way. Allowing the DJ to do more stuff at the transition point between songs.
Outta (lazy) curiousity, where's the original mate? Am thinkin it'd be interesting to listen to.
Really diggin that one crazy bit of synth ya got on here for the leads. And the part when ya fade out those leads really reminds me of one of the Need For Speed tracks (can't remember which one or even which game it was on, opps, my bad, haha). Anyways, sweet stuff here mate.

PS. to anyone else who listens-
this should be played with
sub-woofers for the full effect.
Gsusfrk
Gsusfrk replied Unknown
lol the subs are a must on this for sure!
The remake was liked but not by me... so i figured I'd go with I like not with what people liked, just a reaction I wanted :)

Yeah, I can see what yer saying about the Matrix/Reggae thing, because its makin me think of certain parts of the AniMatrix (Kid's Story, mostly, like the scene where he's typing on his PC or when he's on his skateboard trying to escape the agents). And the subtle Trumpets gave it a nice electric/gritty air vibe I'm thinkin. Anyways, sweet mix mate. Later on!

on We Like It Heavy by Gsusfrk
Play 2 now...

The parts between about 3:37 & 4:18 were nice & classic (exactly what I think when I hear about drum&bass). Had an idea for it if you'll entertain me. I'm thinkin that somewhere right before the pads (?) kick in you could have it completely drop out, have a moment where you throw on some vocal sample (somethin like a guy's voice sayin- "Yeah, that's the way we like it..."), and then bring the beat back with possibly a stuttered kick (or just super chopped section of the main drum loop, like if its 8 seconds play 2 or 1.5 seconds of it with the kick and little spaces in between), and maybe finish up the vox with the same person saying- "Hard and heavy!".
Diggin the intro on this too and paired with the end the track reminds me of the dynamics of a bullet's flight as it explodes forth from the muzzle and gradually decelerates and curves up at a distance. Super groove here mate. Later on!

Play 2 now...

The lil drum iso'd break part that came in at about 1:54 is prolly my favorite part of the song. Real minimal, but still powerful and moving, ya know? The bass part sounded nice n grimey, but for some odd reason I felt that they went against the flow of the soft keys. As if they went against the grain of the rest of the song. I dunno, maybe I'm just being an odd bird, but that's what I'm thinkin. I do lurve the tennis ball bouncing-like sound effect ya placed on 'em though. Interesting mix mate. Later on!

Play 2 now...

Right off the bat, I'm gonna say that this has got me groovin. It def has a killer vibe to it. And the diminishing piano key outro was sweet.

I dunno what it is, but for some odd reason I could see this being turned into an amazing dub/dubstep remix by someone like Jahknow or Ultrabase (haven't been around to see/learn the new good names of that genre here lately). Like the whole first part of this song lends itself to some Jamaican lyrics me thinks. And I'm also thinkin that the paino bits would tie in sweetly with some low key/subdued steel drums... Maybe (scratches head). I'd love to hear an evolution of this track, perhaps a part two someday? Excellent mix mate. Later on!

Play 2 now...

In the beginning I didn't know what to expect, but after the main kick kicks in I was able to wrap my head around where it was going. The percs were pretty sweet, but I think my fave part of the song was the synths and bass. Kinda made me think of cascading water being sprayed out of a faucet at slow speed (with bits of it looking a little like the blobs in a lava lamp). Great sense of depth in this track. Later on!

SN76 must've been listening to this on headphones or something because when I turn up the volume on my sub the low hum of the bassline carries over well. Though on second thought I do get what he's sayin, drumwise I'm thinkin that the kick could be a lil more pronounced. Although... I just had an idea (that would mesh well with the low hum of the bass), add some bass kick drops (aka bass drops) here and there. Ooh, wait, even better. Some occasional gong hits (just slightly dropped down in pitch= 1@ neg 2.5, 2@ neg 5, 3@ neg 7.5... maybe make it go 1-2-3-2... 1-2-2-3... 1-3-2-3... etc). And given it's name have you thought about maybe adding some sounds of a ticking clock (say for the beginning, before the bass kicks in, maybe again at the end)? Man that would sound so sweet. Anyways, lemme stop formulating over here. Really groovin track mate. Lates!
Gsusfrk
Gsusfrk replied Unknown
for the ticking clocks they're around the 3:00 mark they're hard to hear cause they've been cut, delayed with reverb and distortion.
