Bravo! I read your "what you're listening to now" section, and I see we have some common musical interest. I am a huge Weather Report fan, and love Keith Jarred. And like "Zawinule"
I can hear his influence on this track for sure. Unlike alot of artist here on looperman who use the term "Fusion" so loosely, it's refreshing to hear a musician such as yourself who actually knows the true meaning of the term.

Great Job

Very deep and deconstructed feel to this piece, and I love it! Very pleasant to listen to through, and so complex due to the reality of it. I'm so happy to hear songs like this show up on Looperman of all places. Things are changing, albeit slowly. Very cool epiano solo, which sounds so authentic. Great wonderful song! Favorite!

Thank you Friend! I am sorry for responding with such a long delay in time! There is so much energy needing contribution to the actual reality of matters to survive and preserve myself (as a body-mind entity I mean) at this particular moment - a reason for my slow attitude in reacting to what I produced to Looperman. All Toax's sounds are midi based but I used only he's audio stuff here. I played some keyboard licks from sheet https://pl.scribd.com/doc/268519461/1001-Jazz-Licks-pdf This particular lick I used was form 'fusion' labeled instance of this book.
Obviously this is a kind of a 'fantasy' music - my take on Toax's 'Mebenwirkungen' materials transformed anywhere further.

Last Friday I've listened to fine discussion about Human Transgression and similar stuff on polish radio http://www.polskieradio.pl/8,Dwojka It made me think of that kind of concepts perfectly fitting to what actually Toax said about a track: it's an new age afterlife prolongation (in compositional sense) to his production.

I am happy you liked what I did and commented! Thank you once again!

Very pleasing to listen to these two tracks from you! You are really coaxing some great sounds from that casio and the subsequent processing! With your keyboard skill, it is no surprise. When it comes to jazz, my real heart lies with jazz created before electronic instruments were commonplace, but the most appealing thing about jazz is the improvisation in composition and performance, and those are abundant in these tracks. After the minimal outro of the first track, I found the second track to seem quite loud, but after realizing that it was just in comparison, the second listen was not nearly as shocking. Both of these are very enjoyable and disarmingly complex. Second to hearing your awesome tracks, I always find it enjoyable to read your replies to comments. Your ideas and attitudes are inspiring, and are not what I am used to reading on the internet... which is refreshing. Thank you for sharing these pieces. Have a good day! Faves!

I am really glad you enjoyed this one! The very attitude I probably present here is a kind of a searching attitude. Just an example: I decided to spend some time (took me at least 2 hours a day over last 2 weeks) to explore the Harmony. This means I did 'reductions' of some 'written tracks' or 'compositions' by classical composers (mainly Chopin, Wagner, Reger but preferably Shumannn, Mendelssohn and like). The way I did it was still quite primitive: analize and transpose to CM or Am (paralellel minor).

I whish I could be able to contribute more to the 'sound', so to speak - in terms as it is presenting itself to this recording, for example. Definitely this will require some new, probably hardly refreshed attitude and an energy which is mostly desired here (by me).

Have a good day too!

I can't say I am an expert in jazz, to me the best part of jazz is the experimenting. Not sure if you are doing any of that here, combining sounds, feelings and textures with drums and vocal effects or if you are the new Frank Zappa. ;) Either way, keep on keeping on, making music to provoke thought is great.

The second piece is a nice ethereal, dreamy piece. The vocals echoing is a nice effect. Well done Alex!

Hello Alex

To be honest i am not a real fan of Jazz music at all and this one has really a jazzy feeling.
But the track is really well made and sounds real good. All sounds are well chosen and worked out. Also there is a lot of creativity going on and i enjoy things like that a lot. For an improvisation it is very special and well played, but that's nothing special when a track came from your hands :)

I really like the fact that you try out all this different genres and styles. And who knows, maybe the next is in a genre that i prefer more :)

Nice to see you back on looperman with a new track

stay tuned

hello Joe

Thanks a lot for listening and such a kind review! In a way my 'looperman music project' is currently driven by my my want of getting more and more into exploring somewhere deeper all the hardware stuff I have already collected. Same time I am thinking a lot of grabbing more hardware but for the most part my focus in on the classical projects that are currently going on here. I will try to explain it to you as soon as I finish concrete recordings. I will send them to you and will definitely get in touch then.
Basically I am classically trained musician and the 'jazz' factor in my tracks might be just an offshot-result of the music I listened (apart of preffered 'classical' stuff). It's hard to explain until I post the examples of what I do do currently.

Thank you once again for your very kind words and your appreciation of the music I created.
Best to you,
Alex

Wow, such a lovely piece from you promenade :) Was the guitar also a patch? Sounds pretty good for a keyboard :P The drums sound huge and crispy which I particularly love. The whispers(?) are from Soleix? They really add to the depth of the track overall. I really like this one. An almost-abstract jazzy piece that I thoroughly enjoyed!

thank you for listening and nice comments Brado. It is much appreciated. Yes, beside 2 tracks/instances taken from others that I mentioned in the description I played everything directly on the keyboard on the first track. Guitar is also a Casio sound but with lots of virtual effects on it (reverb and time delay candy and such). The 2nd track was made entirely on Casio as well - it's just an earlier take of the same musical 'project'. I am really looking forward to experiment more with sounds and definitely to get more seriously into hardware in the future. Currently I have some other, classical keyboard music projects running quite surprisingly (in my 'real life') so it seems I will probably invest more into hardware synths later this year hopefully. So far I can't say I am anywhere even close to the point of using creatively the possibilities of the hardware I collected. At least this is how I actually think about my current musical condition - there is so much to explore in terms of going 'inward'.

I am really glad you enjoyed this little piece (or pieces) and some percussive work I did on the keyboard. I didn't quantize timing nor velocities of my playing this time.

Thanks for your very nice review.

hello Traz
thanks for listening and some opinions. Basically I do not care whether my music would be top hit or more commercial sounding - I am rolling this looperman music project because it allows me to experiment and simply trying different things. In this case I am experimenting with the sounds of Casio and as I never liked or used them before it was a fine refreshing dicsovery. There is always something interesting and new when comes to the 'sound' production on the very basic level of playing it from the keyboard. Apart of drum loop and pella there is also a guitar with quartal 'abstract' harmonies and whole tone scale played in a descending manner using the synthesized sax.
I just have changed the genre from 'weird' to 'chillout' (ambient will probably fit nicely too) and added also bonus track based on the same acapella - this music is more conventional I guess.

I am glad you liked the music. Thanks for a nice comment.

Thank you Ed!

I actually blended many percussive 'tracks'. The main loop is http://www.looperman.com/loops/detail/76448/jazz-brushes-drum-loop-120-d-by-saintkuz-free-120bpm-jazz-drum-loop (I pasted wrong link yesterday) and it is a quality one. Everything else is simply myself playing directly on the keyboard (my favorite way of composing:) and this time I used only the Casio keyboard. I was never a huge fan of the sound bank of this particular one as for the main part it is just a digital piano with weighted keys that I am using for practising but now I see it has fine patches as well. So the bass drum and snare drum is just a Casio drumset, many other percussive 'ghosts' drum sounds in the background as well. I used different delays and manipulated the stereo spactrum of the track (all software effects as I do not have any real ones so far). I recorded some parts already wet effects (it is inspiring and positively affecting the character of actual playing sometimes) - some other tracks were moved and manipulated/effected afterwards. It is really hard to explain as I didn't use any strict recipe. As for the mid side processing I think the drum loop and the acapella http://www.looperman.com/acapellas/detail/8431/whisper-3-by-soleilxlune-1bpm-spoken-word-acapella were already somehow processed and very nicely effected: around the middle section of the song I only multitracked the vox and panned one track hard left, the second somewhere to the right side of the stereo 'edge'. Those 2 tracks are placed in different time areas on the composition timeline. That was my way to create even more 'space'. The actual 'wind' quality is only on the acapella but I used also one of the sax sounds of Casio - this one has fine 'breathing' qualities too.

A quickly improvised music this time than a concrete, solid composition. I am glad you liked what I did! Thanks a lot for very nice words and your support! It is much appreciated.

Carbon Textures Indeed! First let me say congrats on a amazing track; I absolutely love songs like this! I think you pegged it correctly by saying it's a ambient / house combination. I really like that sparse-delay on just about everything- feel.
the low synth bass and house kick drum works really well on this track. I also dig the odd-timed snare that kicks in periodically throughout the song. I also like the fact that this is you playing and arranging on this effort.

I really enjoyed this track and thanks for posting it.

hello and thank you for such a nice review!

Yes, it is very special and quite original music as I really like incorporating ambient spacious kind of elements. I recorded almost everything simply playing on the keyboard but it was challenging to find a good balance and mix everything properly (from start to finish took me 5 hrs in one session - I usually do not work that long).
I also make music using only loops sometimes (it sounds closer to so called mainstream then, I guess) but my current looperman music is mostly about experimantation - also I do a lot of online collaborations.

I am glad you enjoyed this track!

All the best to you,
Alex

promenade2239 replied 14th Apr 2016 - 9 years ago
thanks for your comment! Kick is from Akai Rhythm Wolf - very low tuned kick layered with low Akai bass. I multitracked it adding different effects. Bassline was made on Microbrute but I was going for some pumping effect here only so it will not even sound as a bassline. Just keep going of layering sounds inside the 'kick drum'. Offbeat snare shots is Roland JunoDi 'Jazz Brush kit' - it was quite hard to mix them along the analog warm sounds. Jazzy sounds/backgrounds/atmospheres are all Roland patches which I played from the keyboard. There is one song I like in particular https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HROMVIHGpLE very minimal one and it is a very classy/classic sort of electronic inspiration.
Really wanted to make everything myself entirely from scratch here.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for listening.

Very cool and interesting divergence from what I've come to expect on your profile! I can't say that it is an uninvited divergence though! I like very much your work with gross beat on the vocal parts... that is a very useful manipulator. Synthesis is sounding excellent! All in all a very cool track in a style which I enjoy hearing. Fave! BTW, have been spending time on the drum and bass stems which you sent me a while back, and I hope to have something worth sharing soon! Take care!

Thank you Friend! Indeed very different and (on the stylistical level) inspired by your music as well (especially pumping bassline in octaves sort of thing). I tried to make it a kind of House but the jazzy elements are not that very prominent and probably were lost somewhere in the mix. I am really glad you liked this track and some strangeness on the vocals I introduced! I invested a lot of energy in this one.

I am happy that you found some of the materials I sent useful and inspiring. I am thinking a lot of making some piano recordings at last - quite intense time now and a lot of outdoor work.

Really cool editing you did on that voice. The subtle bassline seems to fade to the background and I really like that haha. Definitely a unique track, puts a great spin on the genre and breaks from the norm. How did you edit the vocals to sound that way (all chopped and sizzly)? I think that's my favorite segment of this track :)

Hi Brado
Thanks for nice comments! Cru is entirely right about this one being rather a Techno one - I used analog synths for making drums and bassline. I sliced the vox and used IL Gross Beat to process it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Z-fQqBFQs8

So I like the minimal drone dance track underneath you bringing in the in your face techno sounds. This is a Berliner Techno tune and not a house tune. Think Tresor 1998 like Cosmic Baby. I love at 3:05 you bring in some drums and a jazz flair and then take it away from us like a giant tease. It's unique for how you presented this to us. You obviously like the fact I bring elements in and out in my songs but you have done it in a way that is different and creative. I get it and love it. The chopping of Joe's vox is also brilliant. fav'd Alex.

Thanks for nice words. I can always grab house loops and make more and more proper house track, no problem with that.
It is 128 BPM but who cares. Everything is mixed inside Joe's vocal and I created that disco-type bassline on Microbrute myself.
I can not remember 1998.

Greetings. This is some very interesting music.

0:31 I really like that pad fading in and the plucked harp(?) sound on top is very elegant and graceful.

Such a small waveform but it sounds fine.

Then the plucked, delayed instrument (a little like a koto as well) does lots of delicate, beautiful stuff.

1:52 nice warm, bassy pad emerge and the groove is still minimal and gentle. Very relaxing, peaceful music. And intelligent as well, which is one of my favourite types.

Around 3:00 I'm really appreciating the wide stereo spectrum. Lots of fun hearing those delays moving between my headphones. Such a graceful, gentle groove that it feels like you could bring any sound in and it might work.

4:20 nice low piano note and then some louder cymbal work (just for variety).

5:05 now some jazzier grooving from keys and bass plus a brush snare on the kit.

5:53-6:08 is some spacey weirdness. OK but nothing special.

And then the vocal returns, so you're sort of ending where you began.

Congratulations on some intelligent, spacious chillout music.

Hi

Thank you for listening in details!

Regarding to the first section (till 4:30); for layering given midi files I used plugins: 'MrRay22' (epiano) and 'Wavestation' (plucked instrument) as well as 'Il Drum Synth' (some lighter ghost drumming in the background on the first section - till 4:30). All the rest is myself playing/recording everything from Roland's keyboard but also adjusting manually all recorded audio sequencies carefully a lot. So, in this case I came up with ideas by tweaking different synth sounds - I had no concrete vision or ideas what to do with midi's and audio stems at first because Toax's style is very different. Basically chord progressions and some melodies were already programmed so I had to build entire arrangement around it. Dminor-Aminor on the first section, DMajor7 on the jazzy section when keys are busy (5:04).
There is a plugin called 'Groove Delay' in Studio One that can 'animate' nicely plucked instruments and I used it here. Also a lot of delay used but always played 'live', not applying it afterwards - this just doesn't work for me. I didn't use Koto instrument actually - I think it might be low register of Harp or some other layer that has similar tone. Some of the sounds are layered so they may already contain Koto sound, I do not know. I used Basson (at 4:08) and many other instruments: synthesized pads and some single percussive weird shots along with huge reverb.
0:00 - 4:30 was my first take on given midi - then vox and bass were added. I had no idea what to do with it and how to manage the structure of the piece so yes, the music is just weird at some sections. I wish I could develop more funky section with jazzy keys more but there are many limitations regarding to CPU and human energy as well. Toax is making really fine music, we will probably continue our collab action in the near future (which is nice). Basically online collabs are challenging and might be a strange experience sometimes even but I do it a lot anyway.

Thanks a lot for very appreciative comments on this one. I did a lot to get the best sound as possible.
Im glad you enjoyed the results.

Thank you Joe! I appreciate your nice comments.

The original 'Nebenwirkungen' song is 120 BPM and it is a kind of blues https://soundcloud.com/toax/toax_run_12_nebenwirkungen
I did it at 86BPM and it is overall a chillout style with use of few plucked instruments (airy harps and like) and soft synthesized string pads as well as gentle epianos. I made entire arrangement directly on Roland synth by using it's presets and soundbank sounds. JunoDi has also attached software editor and I can actually create my own patches - so far I have spent about 2 hrs with the editor in overall but it has great possibilities - it will probably take me few months until I will find enough time and energy to open it again. Programming is quite complex and time consuming at first - soon or later I will be focusing on creating and using my own original sounds more (I hope).

I am glad you liked the peaceful nature of the track - thanks also for your appreciation on the production matters. It is probably the more complex composition I ever made. I couldn't even play it back inside the DAW properly and had to mixdown few sections many times to record the keys and other stuff but it was rewarding.

Till next time, Alex

I am glad you liked it! This one is a collage and a result of working with some materials we discussed online quickly. It is good to know that I managed to make a coherent and listenable track. The surreal vocal was the idea by Toax - it is just a single phrase from his song stretched and processed. I created instrumental and developed some of his midi sequences - we intend to make more collabs in near future so maybe we will come up with something that would be much closer to proper instrumental music or proper songs.
Thanks a lot for listening and your nice comments!

the first thing that attracted me to this track is that the waveform display showed a great deal of dynamic range. And, generally not flatlining at the max. In other words, indicates that this might just be something different. I was right. Crucethus and Orlando are absolutely right. I truly special piece of music. Imaginative. Never predictable. A really good mix with everything having its place in the spectrum. From a music and a technical point of view, really nice work, Alex.

Hello Eric

Thank you for listening and nice comment! Yes, it is different and the waveform representation is quite small but also this track is very complex regarding to instrumentation. Basically my intention was to keep the 'natural' dynamic range and to get the best sound quality from the instruments as possible. Most of the layers were made on Roland hardware synth - I also compressed and somehow 'expanded' the sound of many single tracks so they have enough power at the start already, regardless of the low gain levels of the final mix. That section with keys and clavinet, for example, was added later but I think I found a good balance inbetween different areas of the track. I mastered it only very slightly, it is barely noticable. Just wanted to get the good quality sound that would be also pleasant to the ears, most of my tracks are not mastered to the standards.
I am glad you liked what I did.
