I think the bass stood out because I kept most of the instruments towards the lower end of the spectrum - whenever I added higher tones, it altered the tempo and put a strain on my vocals. I may stick with this approach in future tracks, as I quite like the deeper tone. It feels more relaxed and natural to sing with, makes recording quicker, and even helps reduce the sound carrying through the walls into my neighbour's flat.
