This particular rhythm I derived from listening to a favorite old Brazilian recording called "Quilombo, or El Dorado Negro" by Gilberto Gil. You might look for it on YouTube. Quilombo was a settlement in Northeastern Brazil where escaped African slaves had formed their own free community.
I think this rhythm, and the instruments in it, are very very particular to Brazilian folklore.
