Gave this a few full listens, all the way through. The patient opening is what got me: a music-box melody behind a low-pass for over a minute while the hats tick in and the sub swells underneath. Most drum and bass rushes that part. You let it earn the drop, and when the breakbeat lands it hits harder because of the wait.
That plucked melody is the spine. It keeps returning after the filter opens, still clear over the rolling sub and the stuttering vocal chop. The full section holds its energy to the last second.
One honest note: the ending. Everything is at full force and then it stops, hard cut, no tail. After an intro that patient, the door slams. If this is meant to stand alone, mirror the intro at the end: pull back to the bare pluck for a few bars, or let the final beat ring out on a reverb tail.
cheers mate i havent finished it i just put up to see if people like and im on the right page. will use the techniques mentioned above. ill probably make it worse lol
Listened twice, all the way through. It opens at full force from the very first second, no warm-up, which suits the style. That distorted kick never lets up, and the acid-tinged stabs underneath keep the groove mean even in the big moments. The breakdown around 1:30 pulls almost everything out, so the return near 2:50 lands twice as hard, and putting those euphoric pads over the brutal drums in the second half is a strong contrast. The one thing I kept noticing was the ending: in the last half minute it strips down to the bare kick and then just stops at 5:03, no fade, no tail. For a competition edit that is honest, but if this ever gets played out, give it one final hit with a long tail or a short fade so the room knows it finished. Strong work. Good luck in the competition.
Listened to this a few times, all the way through. The bones are strong: that swung boom-bap pocket sits really well, and the tape-warm Rhodes with the vinyl crackle under it gives the whole thing a nice lo-fi glow. I like the brief spoken voice near the top, it works as a riser even though it never comes back. The arrangement breathes too, that thin passage around 1:45 to 2:00 drops out at the right moment so the return lands harder. What I kept wanting was something new on top by the second half, a counter-melody or a new harmony color where the voice steps back. It would give the second half somewhere new to go. The fade is clean and it ends on real silence, which more tracks should do. Nice work.
