First off, I like the mix, solid, open. Cool collab, got no complaints or criticisms, thought the lead could have been a bit louder around 2:10 but so minor a suggestion. Dig it man!
Hey Wayne, your wish is my command bro. I checked it out and sure enough that lead was on a lower volume than the others(?) so I leveled it up and yeah you were right, sounds better. So, as always thanks for the feedback, especially when it involves improving the track.
Excellent work! I went and listened to his original. (I'll be listening to more of his work). I can see how you would categorize it as a Tremonti style. It does have kind of a late 90's feel to it. I was never a huge fan of his bands, but I can appreciate the talent.
I know you're a fan of the classic rock, but what about Eddie VanHalen specifically? I can hear a lot of his style in this one. Maybe it's just me. But it reminds me a lot of "1984". Which, is a good thing. I loved that album.
Speaking of collaborations, why have you and Evisma never collaborated? Between your guitars and his bass... I mean, come on man, that's what legends are made of!
I was hoping you would check this out Aaron. Man I would of thought you to be a fan of the alternative/grunge music, especially considering your location. Your right there in the birthplace brother.
Actually I was a huge Eddie VanHalen fan. Still am pretty much. Even though I lost a lot of respect for them when they sold out and went pop. I was an EVH disciple for a while, especially after that first album. Damn, what guitar player wasn't? I spent countless hours trying to learn his techniques and how he created some of those sounds. I posted a track a few years back that was kind of a VanHalen thing. I made the mistake of putting some Dave Lee Roth snippits in it and got some backlash so I took it down.
As far as Evan goes, I mean yeah, hes awesome and I have always admired and respected his talent, for sure. As far as collabs though, I'm really not much into them. I've done a few but they tend to be uncomfortable. Don't get me wrong, I love making music and I love interfacing with other musicians but working together can be difficult. Its why I quit playing in bands. So I don't really approach others for collabs but if someone asks I don't think I've ever said no.
Thanks for your constant support bro, I always appreciate hearing what you have to say in any capacity whatsoever.
Whoa! This thing is killer man! Super nice work with those drums/fills that makes all the difference in making it sound real and professional in my opinion. The guitar work is really good and the mix is very clean! You guys should keep collaborating and be a"virtual band"! :) Thanks for sharing this!
First of all .. the drums are killer. nice collab with the guitar player. I was vibing to this rock track, what the hell is going on. :) The guitar player is working it.
Great sounding clear mix. Nice lead work. Live instruments are so much harder to mix than plugins, but you pretty much nailed it. It is also loud but not compressed (or very little), which is another hard thing to do.
I really liked this track when I first heard it. The drum track really stood out and is a focal point in the mix. I thought to add a bit more polish just to emphasize it even more. Kargalars rhythm track here is super cool also. I guess I would categorize it as Alternative, it reminds me of early Mark Tremonte stuff. I tried a few different approaches for the lead and settled on the intense or more aggressive styling. I thought it worked better dynamically than the slower more melodic stuff I had. I tried to avoid over compression but I think I ended up with a few spots where its a bit muddy. His original track is loud so I had to tweek the eq and make some adjustments where I added the lead.
He actually did more work on the original track and added some nice vocals. He has a pretty slick Video version of it on YouTube. You can check it out from the link in the original in his track list.
Thanks for checking this out and giving me the feedback. I really appreciate it.
Man, I love this tune! really great playing my friend, good job. Pink Floyd-esque intro into a Knopfler style riffing melodic tune. cant be bad! keep up the good work
Do you have a hollow body guitar that you filled with Jim Hendrix's ashes? Sure sounds like it on this track featuring some very tasty playing with a beautiful feel and touch.
It's a bit too chilled out, sensual and relaxing to be a proper Halloween track but I'll let you off. That Thriller one you did a few years ago was much more appropriate for Halloween.
2:10 those runs are my favourite playing in the track. Plus the awesome 2:28 bend.
Jimi sounds like a little child right at the end. I thought his ghost voice would be a lot lower and more humorous.
Do I have a hollow body guitar with Jimi Hendrix's ashes?
That'd be a bit morbid but having his ghost in my guitar would be cool!! I'd just settle for one of his guitars. But hey you made a good point in your thoughts on the ending. So I re-recorded my voice and went in the opposite direction with the pitch. Thanks for the comments bro, you are only one of few that has ever got me to edit my tracks.
It does sound a bit lamenting. So eggs, I had to think about your comment and if I understand you correctly, your actually suggesting that its not the ghost of the former owner in my guitar, but instead the guitar itself has taken on a life of its own?
Interesting. That theory is not quite as creepy. Wonder if I could sell that to my wife? Ha HA !!
I really could enjoy the listen to this fine slow hand dreamy one. But i could not get the ghost thing :) cause it is much to "friendly and heavenly" but it is also far away from angels.
So it must be just real good deep human stuff.
Really well played!
I guess as far as ghosts are concerned, I'm way more acceptable of the friendly and heavenly sort than the opposite type. So that's the idea with the peaceful and benign vibes I tried to present.
Hey Wayne nice to have you drop in. You know I never really much liked Telecasters. I played a few over the years but since they were always a favorite of the country players I pretty much wouldn't play one. In recent years I come to realize my stupidity. They are great guitars and I especially love the feel of them. It's possible I could have been haunted by the Telecaster all those years and didnt realize it!
Rigor Mortis is one of the bands that really got me into metal. Very sad hearing of his passing but at least he was doing what he loved. We have no control over what becomes of our material possessions when we go. As guitarist oud guitars mean the world to us, to others they just be a hunk of wood and metal. In my time away from here I've become very involved in homemade/handmade instruments and accessories like picks and slide and handwound pickups and have to say they definitely have more mojo than factory made/production items. Your title is right on :D Some do play themselves, were just the medium that makes it happen.
My wife is Asian (Vietnamese) and had to endure some horrific things as a child and survivor of the war in Vietnam. She has told me of things she witnessed that made my skin crawl. She very much believes in ghosts. She also has a strong belief that certain peoples personal possessions can become their link to this world when they die. She wont let me buy items from a pawn shop any more.
Cool story. Rigor Mortis guitarist Mike Scaccia died on stage while playing his guitar, maybe it's his! Steve doesn't believe ghosts are real, he should come to work with me LOL! :D Bear nailed it, nice clean soulful playing, always a pleasure Neo. Thanks for getting the annual Haloween thread going, coming up quick! I was trying to play with the Boneshaker yesterday when I got called into work...
OMG I remember that Burt ! I had seen him with Ministry at Lollapalooza and had been to the Rail Club in Fort Worth many times but not the night he died. Yeah I remember hearing he collapsed on stage and died shortly after. I doubt that one of his guitars would be at a Pawn shop, but you never know! I think Steve is just goofing on us with a play on words. Of course ghosts aren't real. Reality is term associated with life. They are un-real.
Glad you like the slow hand and good to see your comment cru. I was trying a couple of things in a totally different direction and wasn't liking it. So I decided to slow things down and dropped out most of the rhythm and the slow hand emerged. Its funny how these things happen sometimes. Oh and ghosts aren't real only to those who haven't yet seen one. Ha ha, Happy Halloween bro !
Ah, Neo, as usual your work on this one is a master's class in playing, composing, and production. Seriously brother, it's like listening to Mayer or maybe Jonny Lang or one of the other greats. They always say the tones in the hands and in this case, they are so right. Beautifully performed. Thanks for sharing. I hope all is well.
Wow that's quite a compliment Bear, I certainly appreciate the kind words man. Tone is always that Holy Grail we are constantly striving for. I was purposely thinned it out a bit more than I normally use in this, to give some what of a twang. But still wanted it to sound good. I actually use two distinct guitar tracks in this with entirely different set ups.
I initially wanted a slow blues 8 bar rhythm progression but it was too full, didn't sound empty or eerie enough. So I basically dropped most of the rhythm guitar and just played some notes and flavored them up with various effects and some string techniques - slides, bends, pinches, pull-offs etc. I actually tried working in some rockabilly styling ala- Brian Setzer in here. Hes another great guitarist I admire a lot. I guess it does have a slight jazzy feel to it in spots though. Thanks for the comment man, much appreciated.
Hey vinny, thanks for jumping in on this. I do enjoy getting creative on the descriptions of certain tracks. I cant take the credit on this one though. Its actually something a salesman at a local Pawn shop told me a few months ago.
