The melody to the verse parts kinda sound like some early 90s westcoast, Souls of Mischief stuff. I'm digging that and your drums hit hard, gritty like you said. Didn't really feel the sound of the hook, it just didn't seem to blend well (although it did a bit better the second time when you had a bridge after it). I wish I could offer a suggestion instead of just saying I didn't like that certain part but I can't.
