We are artists. Did Madonna really feel like a virgin? Did Paul Simon really have diamonds on the soles of his feet? Did Freddy Mercury really kill a man?Maybe, maybe not, but they are emotions we recognise. We write and sing stuff others can relate to.
Did I really sing "you give me hope" for someone? Do you care?
I think you don't, as long as you recognise it and it touches you.
All this rant is just to say: don't worry too much about being banal/insincere. It's in our singing that we make it come true for the listener, and that's all that counts :)
