I'll tell you: While I work on my computer, I always listen to the online radio station out of England called OFFSHORE MUSIC RADIO. [Google it and give it a listen]. They play all oldies from about 1958---1985. Loads of really great songs... Yes, from the pre-Rap era.
While I'm listening, I try to tune in to what the individual musicians are playing, you know, underneath the main melody. Sometimes, I'll hear, let's say, the piano man doing an amazing groove of his own... Or the guitar man. Or the backup girl singers. It's not even the focal point of the song, just a musical part going on in the background. Those are the little riffs I zone in on, and I challenge myself to see if I can replicate them in the MIDI/audio environment. Sometimes I come really close. Other times, there is just some rhythmic subtlety that I have a hard time capturing.
In my case, I'm an old guy now... Modern rap is just not my thing. besidxes, I know there are plenty of musicians here on L'MAN that can provide teh Rap loops. So I go back and try to dig up some tasty riffs from teh past that maybe modern young musicians can use....
