I haven't been technically trained, I just try to find something via piano roll that to me sounds good enough. How would you approach setting something in the right key digitally?
I always put stuff in higher octaves so that I can hear if it's in key or not. Sub basses, for example, are difficult to tell if they're in key or not at lower octaves. But putting it up at anything between C6 or C7 is usually the best way for me to hear the exact tone that's being played. Once I have it in the key of the song (I usually just use the base note of the starting chord or melody) I set it back down to it's original octave.
