Commented on Tribal Warfare by StaticNomad

For some reason I remembered (or maybe fictitiously remembered) that scene in the film The Right Stuff where one of the astronauts meets an aborigine outside a radio station in Australia. "Oh you guys go there, too?" says the young Aborigine, "Not me. See those old guys there? They know. They been to the Moon and stars. They know."

Don't really feel the "warfare" vibe myself...more of an urban-tribal-flashmob-dancefest I'd say. But that's me.

    Dig it much. Nice work.

Hi. I haven't seen that film so am struggling a little to make sense of the quote from it. Maybe this makes you think of far out, spacey ethnic groove stuff.

It's definitely right up your ethnic and world music street though the only two elements that push it in that direction are the didg and the djembes (perhaps the shaker a little as well). Otherwise, it's one of my few pure electronica tracks. Not sure I played a note on it (all programmed) and certainly didn't record any instruments.

I've still got a bit of a problem with the overall sound though I can't quite explain my problem. It's cool but there's still something slightly lacking.

"Don't really feel the "warfare" vibe myself"

I'm with you on that and did say in the description that I had real problems coming up with a suitable title (as I often do).

I was thinking of going with Sipi Tau - a type of war dance you'll see the Tongan rugby team perform before matches (similar to the New Zealand Haka, the most famous of these pre-match rituals and stirring stuff).

These pre-match, aggressive dances are well coordinated so I thought this track might be a good soundtrack for them. Maybe I'll just call the track Sipi Tau and be done with it.

I'll put this track on my mostly pure electronica album - one of 8 albums I've been composing, mixing and compiling for the last couple of years. Just need artwork and quality mastering and I have a whole load of stuff to release from 14 or so years of home music making.

    Good to hear from you.

You devious Arkeye, you! Got both my attention, and a little comment posting this elsewhere! To my ears, this is the perfect example of a Dub Song - flotsum and jetsum as a cohesive whole floating in a Sea of Subs. Having Elaine's voice is like froasting on a cake. Lovely.

I, for one, am glad to see dubstep moving out to fuse with other musical forms. To me, it's far more interesting. I think you've found and captured the spirit of both here, and done it really well at that. Nice one.

I got a real nostalgia/retro sensibility here. Pre-new wave like the five years before Depeche Mode got their break with Fad Gadget/Frank Tovey. Tumbleweed's invoking Talking Heads works, too. Since I love that particular phase of musical development, I really like this one, too!

I love both the sounds and progressions you use here. It really does feel like a story, right from the wind-chimes and thunder clear through to the end when those sounds return.

I also really love how sparse, and powerful at the same time it is.

Thanks for letting me help you polish it up at the end!

Greetings from one n0mad to another! I've had you on my list to listen to since you reviewed my old Babylon Crackers tune, and am finally getting over to your page.

How brilliant that I did! This is awesome music, and had me totally engaged within 15 seconds. I love how it's grounded in archetypal Blues and bootstrapped into something totally contemporary. It's incredibly emotional and visual simultaneously - the kind of song that can play unobtrusively in the background, or you can put headphones on and get lost behind.

I'd love a copy of this should you ever make it available. Seriously, the single best Blues song I've heard in many a month. Added to favorites. Thanks for that!

Yes, this is a rare piece of music (made about 3 years ago) that I worked so hard on. Result is I think it's almost perfect. Listen closely to that lead, slide resonator guitar and you'll find you can pretty much sing along to everything it does, not that I played it all in one go like that. You can indeed get lost in headphones to this one and I think you never know where it's going because there's no obvious structure or purpose to it - it just keeps moving but never getting boring or too repetitive.

I love the ethereal beds of sounds and the warm, anchoring bass. One and only one synth bass instrument on this track, which is rare for me - I usually use a good few and quite often switch between keyboard bass and (played) bass guitar.

As regards making this available to you or anyone else - that's a tough question I'm mulling over but no plans to just yet. I should probably make up a few albums of the material I have from the last ten years but I'm busy starting new stuff, continuing old stuff so need to find the time.

This track comes from a much larger project, from which I've produced a good few tracks so far (more to come too). They share lots of the same instruments and probably even identical guitar parts. Examples you will find on http://soundcloud.com/endlessrotary/sets are: Deaf To The Metaphor (needs just a little more work, guitar a bit loud and screechy at times) and A Shackle For The Free (major recycling of older parts, some odd bass parts made by 1 octave detune of resonator guitar playing. Also has killer, 3-piece grunge band ending).

I messed around with FL back around 2001 briefly, and came away from it pretty prejudiced.

Your artistry has totally changed my perception. All DAWs are simply tools, and their limitations can be overcome. You create stuff that's totally organic, and live, and if I didn't know what you were using I'd never guess.

Outstanding work here brudda. Sending you an email request for the higher rez version.

Sir Sean! My friend, first off let me apologize for replying so late. I've been tied down in a crazy job in a completely strange city, strange enough that I don't know where to go to buy cigarettes! No jokes.

Thanks alot for your listen and review, I really appreciate the time you took. As for the limitations of the DAW, I know I've got little room to speak, being a noob meself, but I'll still say this: If one takes the time to experiment and play around, one usually finds out everything one needs to know. And then there are websites like this that offer the kind of knowledge and tips only friends can.

Eventually, I suppose it's looperman I have to thank. I remember coming here back in the day, first joining up. It seemed unreal to me the way people gave tips and other nuggets of knowledge to those who were new. I was one of the new crowd.

Dub and dubstep was the thing back in that day. I came, I saw, listenend, and finally produced. The response to my first track is why I stuck around. And you remind me of that first ever good review, how I felt like I'd done it right.

So thanks, and I really appreciate you dropping by. If theres anyone who gets me high with a good review, it's the oldschool "REAL music" types like yourself. And because of you, I'll keep innovating. Thank you for that tangent, it's why I do what I do. Cheers n0mad, I cant thank you enough.

Was out surfing and looking up info on the Hallmark Entertainment film we watched recently, "Dreamkeeper." Found out that Iktome (Spider the Trickster) was played by Gary Farmer, who of course was Philbert Bono in "Powwow Highway." Yes indeed, Philbert and his War Pony (remember my early critiques/comments?) - Gary also played the character Nobody in "Dead Man" with Johnny Depp.

He's also got his own Blues band called Gary Farmer and the Troublemakers (he's the founder) and plays harmonica. I'm trying to find contact info, because I want to send him this track of yours. I think he'd dig it tremendously.

BTW - Coyote (in Dreamkeeper) is played by John Trudell and is another character of interest we should probably get a copy of this to.

I do so dig Transit Pow Wow. See what it continues to do?

Nice! I've really been looking forward to hearing Nabil's `pella used again, and in something contemporary. I love hearing a kind of `80's or early `90's Alternative sound behind this one.

A great fusion of the New and the Old - a kind of Modern-Traditional.

I've thought for a long time that Celtic music could be bootstrapped into something fresh and current. You've done that, and done it well!

(I used the `pella, too in my track "Moorlough Mischief and Ire")

Sheep skipping on the Astral Plane?

I wish I hadn't read the name of the piece, because I'm dying to know if it's fluffy because you've planted that idea, or if as I suspect you've truly found "fluff" in sonic form.

We've been watching "Dreamkeeper" the last few nights (a bit at a time), and there are scenes of Coyote and Spider, the Tricksters, in their own plane of existence (the fuzzy boundary). Even on the third listen to this, I keep seeing sheep and what the archetype of soft-wool would be like in that Spirit Realm. I'm positive it would look just as this track sounds.

That is very, very cool indeed!

Doing this kind of music, I'm going to suggest when you have the time to pull up The Ambient Logbook thread here and spend some time browsing it. I think you'll find some really good ideas to draw from as you continue to explore "Floaty, spacey, weird" music! You do it so well.

Someone once described my sound as like "being wrapped in a marshmallow" lol, headphone mastering maybe?

I will definitely pull that thread up and read over it, pure Ambient has always been a bit of a challenge for me because I tend to rely on strong drumbeats to drive my tracks.

The inspiration I get from this community is like no other, it motivates me to branch out into unexplored territory, lol.

    How it is in 2011.

I'll bet you anything this is more "dated" in your ears than anyone else's. The last time I listened to anything I recorded 2 years ago, I nearly cringed - lol. Really it's not so bad, but I think like in writing, you can't help but think "I'd do that so differently if I was doing it now." Good sign really as it means continual growth.

I actually tend to use 8 tracks or less, even with the options now at hand simply because I like to do it live, and unlike Shiva or Vishnu, I've only got two hands.

But listening to this attempt, I'm left with the sense that the minimal approach is a good one. I really love how you've fused Trance and Dubstep here, and upon listening I'm sure that this is something that's up and coming. Good on you, you young pioneer! I really encourage you to go back and extend this one when you're ready - it's most certainly good enough to have a satisfying length before calling it "done."
