Cool work here, some really chilled ambient electronic setup it is sounding nice. Goes with your pic as well, for imagination lift off. Inspiring ideas, hoped your friend liked it. Ty for sharing, Peace!
Sure, I really listened. I almost always do - especially if I'm going to write a review.
Yes, I forgot to say that one way to help the track might be to just reduce the length. I don't often suggest this to people, partly because I tend to make long to very long tracks. However, I try to pack them with action throughout.
So, you don't have to reduce the length. Instead, you can inject more variety so that things don't feel so samey (especially the drums). In that way, the track will justify its length. I've done loads of long tracks that could have been quite a bit longer but I've decided to leave some stuff out (sometimes turning that material into a new track) just so that there aren't too many ideas going on, as that can be exhausting for a listener and make it harder to remember how the track goes (information overload).
What I try to do is go through every section and see if I get bored at all while listening. If so, I try hard to add more variation, which doesn't have to be adding new elements - it could be removing some. If that doesn't work then I get rid of reduce the length of that section. I've done this loads of times to various section in a track. Sometimes I find myself getting rid of 10 secs here, 30 secs there and end up with knocking off a couple of mins from the running time.
Have a play around as I'm sure you can improve this.
I love a good shuffle groove though I've hardly ever done it in a dance track. More shuffle blues and jazz and stuff.
This is pretty far out and creative.
Damn solid bassline that enters on 0:13.
0:19 makes me think of very tight guitar. Is it? Perhaps a sample.
Then some nice, dreamy keys. This is like jazz fusion funk stuff but much more electronic.
1:20 may well be out of time with everything else. Unless that's what you're going for. Is it?
By 2.5 mins, I'm feeling that the drums should change a bit more. That hat's been a bit too incessant so maybe switch to ride.
2:55 that's one dirty, distorted, low bit of riffage. Really takes the track somewhere more powerful.
The drums are good - they just feel a bit too incessant. Then again, I like lots of drum variation. Some people will be absolutely fine with these drums and not feel they're overly repetitive.
4:43 aha here's a significant drum change and it's good. I'd get it in earlier. Good, crazy, new sound around 4:44.
Drum track also seems to lack fills and cymbals but, again, maybe that's just what you favour. Too many fills can be annoying.
Thanks Nomad! It may just be the song is too long 7 minutes man.... I may need to edit it down to 4min30sec or 5... Thanks for the tip, I agree, The the front needs to be shaved mostly. At 120 is a 3/4 over 4/4 that creeps thru the whole piece. yeah it is outa time in a sense. Let's call it jazz. :-)
I so appreciate it man. I can tell u really listened. Thanks, again.
smoooooth mix YB...being a guitar player who plays guitar over every damn kind of musical thing going on I have to admire your restraint on the drum mix...really like the bass sailing through that nice progression...I would be a bad source of advice on the genre..but my personal preference would be for a little more meat on the kick drum...maybe something centred down around 80 Hz would live o.k. with the bass...but its sounding good just as it is...enjoyed the listen...cheers...Ed
This song could definitely use some rich female vocals on the chorus. And a very fast, synth lead melody will fit well throughout the song. Great production! Btw you commented on one of my tracks saying you had some beats I could possibly record over. So my email is If you want to send me anything.
Nice sounds going on here in this one, genre wise seems to have a few kicking in there, would prob guess leaving as you have in this genre, maybe Fusion be better fit, whatever the genre, I really am enjoying the different sounds that are coming through out the mix...Fav'd...Peace mosaic....
great musicality and creativity here...kinda jazzy electronic...Static wrote I thought everything about technical questions so I just congratulate for you...unique track...
This is some pretty far out, accomplished stuff. Doesn't sound like someone new to any aspect of music making.
There's an audio pop on the very first piano note so you need to fade that in. Or just export the whole track slightly earlier on the timeline.
Vocal sample that enters with the drums is cool. And then there's funky bass and a good heavy beat, with the low piano still in there, being menacing. The groove is pretty damn tight and there's a lot going on in the stereo spectrum. It's also well mixed because I feel I can hear everything and nothing seems to be interfering with anything else.
1:44 good drop of the bass to give this a change. And then 1:48 a new, powerful synth panned left. 2:08 drum break as you transition to something else. Glockenspiel sort of sound is a bit odd but works OK because it's mixed in with other sounds I prefer.
2:34 great delay on the drums as they fade away.
Then back in with the heavily layered mix of so many elements plus new (?) dirty synth bass. Very busy mix, perhaps overwhelming but also powerful. Track is a bit dark overall but nothing too freaky.
I'm rarely a fan of fadeout endings but this one was OK. I'd still probably prefer a more definitive ending and conclusion to what's come before but great work all the same.
Thank you Static. I've got like 15 of these started and guess what... they all fade at the end...lol ... I'll come up with something. Yeah I need to to fix that click at the front (bad edit).
I've been around music making for a while :-), but always as a drummer/sideman. I want to thank ya'll for being so kind to listen and provide some pointers. I live in the Lynrrd Skynnrd belt so their aint a lot of people bounce ideas off of. I want be a better composer.
This track is probably the result off listening to too much massive attack and Miles on the same day ;-)
also there are always things that I forgot to say and I should write another comment, the reason that I insist on playing with panning, is that your track is kinda mysterious and confusing type, so it can make it more confusing and attractive if you just play with pannings (in a controlled way), regards .
Thanks so much for the feedback Littlejay. I really appreciate the time you took to be specific with your suggestions. Really usable... and I can definiteley work with panning and chop away at some of the conflicting frequencies you pointed out. Can't beat that kind of criticism. The kind you learn from.
Put me behind a kit and I'm comfortable... Composing and producing music in this way is new to me (9 months)is OUT of my comfort zone, but I am fascinated by the wide palette of choices available. So I'll keep at it.
I'm not into this genres a lot but, lemme give you some feedbacks: first of all I like the start on 0:27 or same 0:28 and the bottom guitar till end. I really feel the lack of roll off, which gave me a headache, you have a lot of additional frequencies that should be deleted, some lines should be limited and compressed, second part of the music is boring a bit, some lead instruments could be added there. I liked the minor chords in 2:25 well, its better to reduce the amount of frequencies which are more than 10000 for your bells, increase the amount of under 150Hz frequencies for your bass (it makes your bass line powerful and will separate it from other lines and reduces some of additional freq and sounds.) and then turn its volume down between 3 and 3.5 decibels
nothing is wrong with your toms, they're really mixed well, that jing jing bells in 0:27 are making a bad additional sounds, my suggest is to roll off freqs betweem 3000 and 8000 and reduce them, then use a stereo shaper to make it stereo (it will separate them and makes the listener to feel that they're more near to the ears) then turn the volume down betweem 2.5 and 3 decibels
the synth which starts at 1:13 is completely panned to the right, it could be better if you make it mono or for example change its panning from right to left then left to right every 3 or 4 or 5 seconds, it would be great
you need a bridge in 2:06 or 2:07, and also in 2:24 or 2:25 or 2:26 ( you can easily use a reversed crash (cymbal) and stick it to a normal cymbal then use it as a bridge for your changing times)
the panning of the female "ah ah" (or whatever :D) sound could be changed every 2 or 3 or etc seconds (your choice).
know this there is always room for improvement, your track is good enough itself and doesn't need to be changed, but thats just a room for improvement. there are more tips for this track but it will be boring if I write more xD so lets save them for the next tracks :D, regards.
I really like this, so much so that I listened to it twice in a row. It does have a slightly unfinished sound, but for me, that is half the charm.
Personally, I would have liked to hear the drums come through a bit more and be more of a driving force, and I'm quite certain if more people listen and comment, then it will be mentioned that the mix needs more work. Luckily, there are plenty of people here that can help you should you so wish.
Great dbut track though, and looking forward to hearing more stuff from you in the future. Keep it up! :)
Thank you Mildperil. U b right.... Mix needs much more. The drums are from another session I played on (orig like 105 bpm). But I kinda liked the feel and energy of that particular groove. I actually brought the drums in 2 track instead of dragging all 8 tracks into the song. Had a hella time warping the Premier Signia kit 2 track into time. Warping 8 tracks of drums may b beyond my level at this time. Any suggestions on making the mix better is super welcome. I'm a drummer and have a long way to go learning audio engineering. Could I get some more help from you more experienced producers? Thanks so much in advance.
Our pet rabbit, who is the animal king is called Bliss, so I had to listen to this song. I love that you used real drums on this, sounds wicked! Me and my band are doing the same, hiphop using real instruments. For me, the only thing missing is guitar but I add guitar to everything. Even to food ;)
