Don't know why hadn't reviewed this one, very different for you, but in a good way mate...Track seems to take you on a journey, well it does to myself, mix sounds brilliant, don't know anything about genre at all, but liking what I am hearing here, that's the main thing...has a Indian feel about as in India the country, excellent...Fav'd...Peace friend, hope you and family are well matey...Mosaic...
I had to give this another listen. It still has the same effect on me when I first heard this a few years ago. I still dig that accordion. The spacial feel to the drums is great, you really filled up the entire stereo field.
It's good to go back and listen to some older tracks and be amazed at how great they still sound. Hope all is well!
Read reviews on this, I actually love what you have done with this one, more so is you have put your style on it, which is something I like about your tunes, very much like Spiv does with his tunes, Spiv more so then you mate but you have your own sound, which is good here on site as to many try to sound like the jones next door, you know what I mean, looking forward to see what new stuff you have here over next week or two, again thank you so much for your email and review of my latest track, you are a good friend mate...Thank you with all my heart matey...Peace and much Respect dude...Mosaic...
My pleasure friend! I actually just got done with another remix of an Arkeyetexture track that I'm more happy with - it sounds more "n0mad23-esque" if you know what I mean. Sure am enjoying taking a stab at these Dub Guild remixes! Thanks for the listen and review!
Does dub usually have a kick drum? I think a really solid kick would help give the listener a point of reference to feel the groove. Without it I tend to get a little lost. Still cool vibe though.
I thought it had more to do with bass than a kick - but right you are. The original was posted as "Jungle Dub" and upon reflection, this is more "jungle" than "dub" so I'm relabeling it. Thanks!
Hi. I don't know the original so it's a little bit hard to know quite what you're doing on this one. Probably just putting it through your trademark nomad swirling maelstrom dub filters.
As you said - you're not playing anything on this.
"Raggamuffin Livity through the rekindling of jahknow's Dub Guild."
I don't know what that means. You're splicing together two tracks?
Anyway - I liked it more on the second listen. Has it been speeded up from the original?
Maybe not - maybe just faster swirling drums added to make it more frenetic.
I guess it kind of feels like it should have some vocals somewhere but it would be pretty cool out live at a club. Or as a bit of soundtrack music as it's got some good energy and I could see a busy doing stuff/running montage set to this.
It probably lack for variety for my tastes and the final section after the last breakdown isn't much different from preceding sections.
But it's still good stuff so well done on your cavernous dub remix. I guess I should look up the original!
The Dub Guild is an anarcho-collective group of 12 artists originally brought together by jahknow who was an artist here, who unfortunately passed away in 2011. I've added the link to arkeyetexture's original track here, and those who follow the link will see the track is posted as a Dub Guild collab request. I've stripped three tracks from the original for my remix, and interpreted it with n0mad23 eardrums. There's a version of arkeyetexture up on Soundcloud that uses lyrics as well, so the idea you've presented is indeed a good one. I personally haven't done a lot of remixing of others' work, so this was really rather experimental for me. Cheers.
Hey Sean, good to see you popping in here once in a while again. So glad you posted something new, you always seem to make my mind work overtime when I listen. jahknow's Dub Guild, damn, that brings back some good memories from a few years ago on the loop. I see Arkey once in a while here and we ALL miss jahknow's input and presence here.
Are you still using Ableton? I made the switch just over a year ago, worth it in my opinion. The track has moments of psychedelic flashbacks(make it stop) and lots of cool dubby things happening. Sorry for all the technical terms, lol. I listened in my headphones, nice use of the stereo field. The mix sounds pretty clear, well done to both of you.
Hope the radio station gig works out for you. I've stopped in and listened a few times but I haven't caught your show at all. I will have to make it a point to stop over and chat. Hope everyone is fine at home, take care Sean.
I'll have to share the story of the Dub Guild resurrection sometime - pure cosmic convergence episode. Simmerdown even popped up out of the woodwork feeling the pull one afternoon - so weird, that. We're trying to do what jahknow originally planned, which is a collective of like minded artists sharing resources and making available each other's work for remixing purposes. Some really awesome remixes have come out of this in the last few weeks. I'm still using Live 8 with my APC-40 and Axiom-25 keyboard, and can't imagine really working with any other DAW at this stage. My radio show tends to be Dub themed on most weeks, but I'm also doing "peregrinations" where I spend 2 hours just playing music from Africa or inspired by African musical traditions, as well as Asian peregrinations. I've played your "Lost Caravan" on one such peregrination show all ready (fit great for my stop in North Africa)! I'm on Tuesdays at 2PM EST should you find yourself able to swing by sometime. So glad to see you're still around and making awesome music, Wayne. Still look forward to sitting down with you sometime over dungeness crab and comparing life notes!
Must have forgotten to check this out a couple of years ago when I listened to quite a few of your tracks.
This has a hell of a vibe. Big, swirling cavernous sounds that should be blasted out a soundsystem in a desert. Or really just anywhere outdoors. But maybe not a in a quiet flower garden whilst people meditate.
I guess the bagipes mesh with the deep metallic drums to make something that is a bit like some sort of futuristic (Scottish) clan warfare.
I wouldn't call it dub but I'm sort of struggling to give this a genre name. The best I can come up with is Cavernous Tribal.
"public domain Morocco field recordings from the 1950's"
Maybe I should get some of that sort of stuff as it would probably fit well in some of my music.
On Soundcloud, this and a couple other track I have up as "Ethnic-Dub" which actually makes a lot more sense. I'm actually surprised I haven't been charged with heresy by the Dub Purists yet. I did try to approach this one throughout its development using dub techniques and philosophy - though it's debatable that replacing the mandatory deep bass riddim with bass drums still qualifies. Twas a Beast and a Joy to create.
Took me right to the limits of my skills recording mixes in real time with my APC-40 and the laptop's keyboard MIDI mapped with Ableton Live.
It is big, isn't it? It still surprises me on those rare moments it gets played by me, as it was done on a dual core PC laptop running Windows XP. Digital audio run-time environments have gotten really sophisticated.
Very Nice - similar to some of my cuts but better. Good subtle changes and unique instrumentation. I guess if I were to quibble, and this is a matter of taste, there was not as much contrast and surprise between parts as I would have liked. Loved the drama at the intro and very effective use of contrasting but really complementary aural imagery. -clindsay
In one of the earliest draft versions I did have a lot more contrast with quieter moments between the heavy rhythms, but after the bagpipes began entering the mix it all changed. I wanted it to carry the energy of a riot or rebellion - full on until the end. I've been playing around with remixes of other artists work lately, and you've got me thinking another version of this is probably in order. Thanks for that.
Hey, I got that reply in the end though may well not have seen it if I hadn't got the email notification of the reply. But I never got the reply regarding playing my tracks on your Loop radio show. Send it again if you've still got it.
"I seem to be more geared to doing soundtracks than songs, I'm afraid."
Same here though I haven't tried a lot of song-making as I need vocalists - a constant problem for me. So, I just go with far out instrumental - a lot like yourself.
I'm also "musically illiterate" in terms of music theory but can groove well and feel how sound should move and the various places a track could go (ie genres it could morph into).
"I do bang and pluck on things"
I thought you played a few instruments but maybe it's only hand drums. I can't fully remember. You do a great job if you don't play any instruments. There are a few people like that on this site.
Most of my synth stuff is programmed rather than played. I do play some parts but can do a surprisingly expressive and adventurous job just with drawing in data and constantly modifying it. I have a long, pure electro chillout far out track on here called Tiny Little Pieces that is almost exclusively drawn in using the mouse.
Anyway, your track is a very hypnotic, somewhat alternative take on dub. I'm not surprised people really like it.
Forget to check in here - sorry. Yeah, I play balaika, guitar, spike fiddles, etc. as well as the hand drums. I also do a bit on primitive flutes, but only well enough to add as punctuation or details. Forgot all about the email thing and will rectify that presently. Cheers.
for sure one of the best Dub traX I've ever heared . innovative arrangemenT & considered composition.an smart idea about usage of those background sounds which makes this unique package rememberable & I reallY enjoyed.many thnX for sharing .respects & BesT wishes.___Behnam
Buried deep in the forums here is the abandoned Dub Logbook - much of my approach to the genre has been hugely influenced by the discussions on that thread. Really flattered by your response to it, and have made myself a note to check out your work in way or reciprocation. Glad you enjoyed this!
Thanks clindsay! Actually back when I was thinking about creating this, I had a email discussion with alividlife about sonic narratives, and attempted that with this one. So glad you picked up on it.
This track is wild as hell, has a rea live futuristic band feal to it, i love all the instruments and the progerssion, the wah wah guitar is amazing, everything is amazing, makes me want to ride my car and just zone out and be free. good job!
...and XXL-Thanx fe playing JahKnows track(s) on Loopradio! ...and Maximum Thanks fe your NICE comment on my profile!
...and : I did a song for John Olsen, soon after he passed to the "DUB-Side". I'm not sure, if uploaded it here on LoMa...if you're interested, I send you an mp3 of it on your mail, ok?!
Ok I really wanted to comment, having scrolled down to the bottom of all those posts, and now will be at the top :) Sean, what is creative destruction? contradiction in terms springs to mind but I know about being joyful in a destructive act. Great piece of music however..! and will be playing it on the radio next chance i get ;)
It's metaphor (and words to live by). My take - the virgin parchment gets destroyed with the first kiss of ink as the epic poem begins to be created. Might as well do it with a smile! Glad you like this one. Cheers.
Listening to the first few minutes of this makes me think of a book written in such a way that you can turn to any page and pick up the story. Not sure if that makes any sense but I'm trying to describe the way the track sits and sort of doesn't really move anywhere but there's still lots of stuff going on.
I love that guitar and it seems to always be playing the same thing but doing different things at the same time. This is truly hypnotic music that feels like it could just be played on a loop forever.
I prefer things to change a lot more (and perhaps change things too often in my own music) but this works in its own, special hypnotic way.
Separately, you've got lots of interesting and in-depth comments on this so I guess it's inspired people to write more than just "Hey, nice track" or similar.
I seem to be more geared to doing soundtracks than songs, I'm afraid. Not sure what to make of that, except accept it for what it is. I'm actually both envious of "real musicians" (I do bang and pluck on things but being musically illiterate is a hindrance) and surprised that people seem to enjoy some of my offerings as much as they do.
So sorry for the huge delay in replying to your wonderful review here. I'm trying to ease myself back into this stuff.
This is jammin! I love the ethnic flavour of it! You all seem to really be in the same mindset to record something like this! Fabulous and deep! Faved for sure!
It's one of my favorite recordings, to be sure. Especially as it's a demo, and recorded exactly the same way we played it when doing our gigs at local pubs. Three of us from the Crackers actually were at a party together this summer (the first reunion since 2005) and we jammed live with a couple South African chaps and their marimbas. Even though it'd be 8 years since we'd jammed together, we picked it up like it'd only been a week. Thanks for the review (and welcoming me back here!).
