my first thought when I read your title "Kansas City" was "Les Humphries". That's not surprising, though, because Kansas City is basically indissolubly welded to Les Humphries in my mind.
It was a band, a group from the 70s, named after the founder, an Englishman living in Hamburg at that time, which had hit after hit ("Kansas City" was one of the biggest of them) in Germany in those years. You will hardly know Les Humphries, of course, but from my generation, even today, everyone in Germany certainly knows him at once.
the piano and your voice basically fit together well in expression and tempo.
Also the concrete moment of the long-distance relationship - what you feel, think, how you create a connection for yourself (the same moon, the same stars...), you express very comprehensibly for me (I also once had such a relationship for several years) through the vocal "monotony" that temporarily fits this situation.
But please check the volume of your voice again. For my hearing, your voice has too strong peaks when you want to emphasize emotion, which makes sense in principle, but can also quickly no longer be in the right relationship to the basic vocal volume.

Kansas City seems to dynamize... both with Les Humphries and with you! I really enjoyed listening to your version as well.

I did not Mr. Humphries till now, nor his song. When I first think of a KC song it's by Fats Domino, the classic.

You and the character in the song have fond memories of KC!
